Rockshow episode 205 Can and FaustCan and Faust are two pioneering bands from the Krautrock movement, a genre that emerged in West Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Krautrock is known for blending rock, electronic music, and avant-garde experimentation, influencing many subsequent genres, including post-punk, new wave, and electronic music. Can:• Origin: Cologne, West Germany (1968) • Members: The classic lineup consisted of Holger Czukay (bass), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Damo Suzuki (vocals from 1970 to 1973). • Style: Can's sound is a fusion of psychedelic rock, avant-garde, jazz, and funk with a strong emphasis on improvisation and minimalist rhythms. They often used repetitive grooves and layered textures, creating a hypnotic effect. Their music could range from delicate, ambient passages to wild, chaotic experimentation. • Notable Albums: • Tago Mago (1971): A landmark album known for its experimental sound, long instrumental jams, and Suzuki's unpredictable vocals. • Ege Bamyasi (1972): Featuring more concise and rhythmic songs, with hits like “Vitamin C” and “Spoon.” • Future Days (1973): A more ambient, ethereal record, often seen as a peak of the band's explorative nature. • Influence: Can was highly influential in shaping the experimental rock and electronic scenes, inspiring artists ranging from David Bowie to Radiohead.Faust: • Origin: Wümme, West Germany (1971) • Members: The core lineup included Werner “Zappi” Diermaier (drums), Jean-Hervé Péron (bass), Rudolf Sosna (guitar, keyboards), Arnulf Meifert (drums), and Hans Joachim Irmler (keyboards). • Style: Faust's music is more avant-garde and noise-oriented than Can's. They mixed rock with musique concrète, tape experiments, electronic soundscapes, and dissonant, atonal elements. Their sound often had an anarchic, confrontational edge, pushing the boundaries of what rock music could be. • Notable Albums: • Faust (1971): Their debut, an experimental and highly eclectic album, blending found sounds, noise, and fragmented song structures. • Faust IV (1973): A more accessible but still experimental album, with a mix of rock, ambient soundscapes, and odd time signatures. • The Faust Tapes (1973): Originally sold for a low price, this album was a collage of improvisations, studio experiments, and sound cut-ups. • Influence: Faust is seen as one of the most avant-garde bands of the Krautrock scene, influencing later experimental and industrial music, as well as bands in the post-punk and art-rock genres. Both bands were central to Krautrock's ethos of breaking free from traditional rock structures, emphasizing improvisation, and pushing boundaries with studio technology. While Can leaned more into groove-oriented, hypnotic rhythms, Faust embraced a more radical approach to sound experimentation. For Can:#CanBand #Krautrock #ExperimentalRock #TagoMago #EgeBamyasi #DamoSuzuki #HolgerCzukay #IrminSchmidt #JakiLiebezeit #MichaelKaroli #PsychedelicRock #AvantGarde #MinimalistRock #PostPunkInfluence #FutureDays #GermanRockFor Faust:#FaustBand #Krautrock #AvantGardeRock #ExperimentalMusic #FaustIV #TheFaustTapes #ZappiDiermaier #JeanHervePeron #HansJoachimIrmler #MusiqueConcrete #NoiseRock #GermanUnderground #ArtRock #IndustrialMusicInfluence #FaustExperimentation

The story of Can continues this week diving into the magical combination of drummer Jaki Liebezeit & bassist / producer Holger Czukay, the origins of Sampling, and the recording of the group's breakthrough experimental record Tago Mago.
Formed in 1968, the German group Can's founding members included Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay who had both studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen. Joined by jazz drummer Jaki Liebezeit, guitarist Michael Karoli and Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki for the group's 'classic' line-up that recorded Tago Mago (1971) and Ege Bamyasi (1972), their fourth album - Future Days - saw them exploring a more ambient, blissed-out sound, in contrast to their previous releases. Matthew Sweet is joined by musicians Jah Wobble and Gwenno, novelist Alan Warner and cultural historian Mererid Puw Davies to take a deep dive into the album and explore the blend of influences that made Can such a unique musical proposition.Producer: Torquil MacLeodAn expanded edition of Jah Wobble's autobiography Dark Luminosity: Memoirs of a Geezer is out on 7th March.

Did anybody see this snowman, standing in the wind alone? Damo did ... and Holger, Irmin, Jaki, and Michael, too.Today we're talking about Can — and specifically, their 1971 double LP, Tago Mago. John Cale, "I Am the Walrus," and Aleister Crowley get their due, but in this end this is all about the mad genius of five men jamming in a castle. We are all mushroomheads.

Welcome to the Field Musicast - where Peter and David from Field Music wang on about musical stuff. He will dive and discover with us and himself into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. In this podcast Schlich reflects on his talk guests, answering listener questions and all other thoughts around this podcast. Schlich talked and philosophized with him about Senger´s first encounter with the concept of music, his life in and around Cologne, Hamburg, Amsterdam, first instruments, bands, influence and more.Dominik von Senger is a german musician best known as the guitar player of Dunkelziffer and the Phantom Band. He uses to be a bandmember of Jango Edwards & Friends Roadshow before he became active in Cologne's Krautrock scene in the early '80s. Von Senger was then a member of the quasi post-punk-new wave groups Dunkelziffer and Phantom Band, both of which also included Can's Jaki Liebezeit, Damo Suzuki and Rosko Gee. Von Senger took the Can type of sound and remoulded it into a kind of slick fusion. Dunkelziffer was a German rock band that stylistically combined African rhythms and reggae with influences of the 80s sound like the New German Wave, which had just emerged at the time. Dunkelziffer has been described as a "German mystic group, playing percussive space reggae". The band was founded in 1981 by Cologne musicians from the Stollwerck scene. The group was designed in such a way that there should be no rigid structures, but each member could be a composer and everyone could contribute their creativity and spontaneity equally at any point in time.More Band projects:Damo Suzuki Band, Wolfgang Niedecken & Complizen and the Ya-Ya's, known for their famous life sessions at the YaÝa Club, located @ the Cafe Kalkutta, Kunsthaus Rhenania in Cologne.Schlich is Visual Artist, Film Maker and Ritual Designer, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. ArTEEtude. West Cork´s first Art, Fashion & Design Podcast by Detlef Schlich.
*ArTEEtude is West Cork´s first art, fashion and design podcast created and produced by* Detlef Schlich. H *e will dive and discover with us and the german music philosopher Dominik von Senger into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. In this podcast, Senger and Schlich talk about Senger´s first encounter with the concept of music, his life in and around Cologne, Hamburg, Amsterdam, first instruments, bands, influence and more.* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Dominik von Senger is a german musician best known as the guitar player of Dunkelziffer and the Phantom Band. He uses to be a bandmember of Jango Edwards & Friends Roadshow before he became active in Cologne's Krautrock scene in the early '80s. Von Senger was than a member of the quasi post-punk-new wave groups Dunkelziffer and Phantom Band, both of which also included Can's Jaki Liebezeit, Damo Suzuki and Rosko Gee. Von Senger took the Can type sound and remoulded it into a kind of slick fusion.* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Dunkelziffer was a German rock band that stylistically combined African rhythms and reggae with influences of the 80s sound like the New German Wave, which had just emerged at the time. Dunkelziffer has been described as a "German mystic group, playing percussive space reggae". The band was founded in 1981 by Cologne musicians from the Stollwerck scene. The group was designed in such a way that there should be no rigid structures, but each member could be a composer and everyone could contribute their creativity and spontaneity equally at any point in time.* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *More Band projects:* --------------------- *Damo Suzuki Band, Wolfgang Niedecken & Complizen and the Ya-Ya's, known for their famous life sessions at the YaÝa Club, located @ the Cafe Kalkutta, Kunsthaus Rhenania in Cologne.* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Schlich is Visual Artist, Film Maker and Ritual Designer, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He is mainly w *orking in the field of performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. Damo Suzuki left Japan in his late teens and busked around Europe, attracting the attention of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of the band Can. Suzuki became their lead vocalist from 1970 to 1973, writing and singing on the band’s most enduring albums. In 1983, he returned to music-making to front Damo Suzuki’s Network, traveling the world to improvise and record with local bands. Here, he discusses his philosophy on “instant composing,” spirituality in making music and more.
And now for something completely different: Attention: this DJ-Mix contains no Techno or House music. Just Krautrock from 1970 to 2019, from Germany, England, Japan…. But why? This music had a huge influence on my musical upbringing. Before German New Wave (NDW) there was German music that was totally unique. I tried to play Michael Rother's shining guitar melodies on my acoustic guitar, clapped on my knees to the stoic beats of Jaki Liebezeit and wished I had a synthesizer. On June 13th 2019 I took the opportunity to play only Krautrock during a Liquid Sky Berlin event that I hosted with my friend 10cars at Maze Club in Kreuzberg. I played all those upbeat German Krautrock tracks from the 70s and added some new Kraut by bands like Camera, Minami Deutsch / 南ドイツ, Verstärker, Stereolab and so on. I guess many of you might discover something new! Hope you enjoy the experience!

New Music Worldwide is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian. This week's New Music Worldwide mix comes from Munk. Munk aka Mathias Modica, is a Berlin based producer, DJ and the creative mind behind the labels Gomma, Toy Tonics and Kryptox. Munk has released 3 albums and produced music with James Murphy and Peaches amongst many other big names. In 2018, he will release a neo-jazz album which features the last appearance of CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit.
Steven Drozd joined The Flaming Lips in 1991. His one of a kind drumming style fuses Bonhamesque bombast with a clever compositional sense reminiscent of Can’s Jaki Liebezeit; but his contributions to the band aren’t limited to drumming. Drozd plays most of the instruments on The Flaming Lips' recordings and co-writes their songs. He tells Joe about playing in his father’s band at age eleven; having his mind blown by The Jesus Lizard and The Melvins; his role in The Flaming Lips; creative confidence; and embracing joy in the wake of considerable tragedy. This is one of our favorite episodes.
A bank holiday special of material from our recent Japanese Playback event held at Spiritland in London, featuring the one and only Clive Bell. http://www.clivebell.co.uk/ --- CLIVE BELL is a musician, composer and writer with a specialist interest in the shakuhachi, khene and other Far Eastern wind instruments. He has travelled extensively in Japan (where he studied the shakuhachi or Japanese flute with the master Kohachiro Miyata), Thailand, Laos and Bali, researching music and meeting local practitioners. In 2011 he played with Jah Wobble at Ronnie Scott’s and the Glastonbury Festival, and toured the UK with Mugenkyo Taiko drummers (contemporary Japanese drumming). Clive is the shakuhachi player on Karl Jenkins’s album Requiem on EMI Classics, and the final two Harry Potter movies. His shakuhachi playing was featured in a live solo session on Radio 3’s Late Junction, and in 2013 on Radio 3’s In Tune. A musician who regularly joins David Ross, Sylvia Hallett and Peter Cusack in improvisation duos and trios, Clive Bell has a substantial recording history as both a solo artist (his solo album, Shakuhachi: The Japanese Flute was reissued in 2005 by ARC Records) and as a composer for film, TV and theatrical productions (Complicite, IOU, Whalley Range Allstars). Kazuko Hohki, Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit, Harry Beckett, Robert Lippok, David Sylvian, David Toop, Jochen Irmler of Faust, Paul Schütze and Bill Laswell number among Clive Bell’s collaborators. As a record producer, his latest release is Taeko Kunishima’s Late Autumn on 33Jazz (2011). Based in London, he writes regularly for the music monthly The Wire.
Drummer Colin Ryan (Lowlight, Roadside Graves) joins Brian and Bill to discuss avant-garde German rockers CAN and their landmark album Future Days (1973, United Artists). Colin talks about how his former bandmates convinced him that listening to CAN was a good idea, forever influencing his own playing. Bill, Brian, and Colin discuss how Jaki Liebezeit's drums and Irman Schmidt's keys hold the sound of the band together, Damo Sazuki's unique vocal style, Bill makes up a story about an android while listening to these songs, the band's strange method of songwriting and the philosophy behind it, and much more as we make our way through the album track by track!
