Germany in 1978 and 1979. Bass, Electronics, Norm Peach; Choir, Craig Wuest, Joan N., Marla T., Phil N.; Electric Guitar, Treated Guitar, Electronics (Tonewall), Dennis Rea; Flute, Woodwind, Tim Finnegan; French Horn, Flute, Marla Thomson; Producers, Craig Wuest, Klaus Schulze; Moog Modular System Programming, Technical Advice, Klaus Schulze; Sitar, Dirk Schmalenbach, Synthesizer, Sequencer, Mellotron, Biotron, Piano, Sitar, Harp, Effects, Voice, Vocoder, Bells , Percussion, Tape loops, Electronic Treatments, Craig Wuest; Violin, Phil Novak; Violin, Viola, Electronics, Louis Deponté; Violin, Electronics, Daryl Trivieri. (06:18) Edgar Froese, “PA 701” from Macula Transfer (1976 Brain). The material was composed during different flights during '75 and '76 while on tour with Tangerine Dream. Instruments, Composed By, Produced by, Edgar Froese. I'm not certain, but all of the tracks are named after airline flight numbers. I think this one was on Pan American. Recorded in June 1976 at Amber Studio, Berlin. (07:33) Beaver and Krause, “Gandharva” and “By Your Grace,” from Gandharva (1971 Warner Brothers). The Moog Modular is played by Bernie Krause, the pipe organ by Paul Beaver. Baritone Saxophone, Gerry Mulligan. Recorded at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, February 10-11, 1971. This recording came at the height of the Moog craze (for which Beaver and Krause were largely responsible) and this music took a decidedly thoughtful turn with its jazz guests and spacious live sound recorded in a church. Having the Moog Modular in a live performance was a challenge and its presence is only apparent in the opening and several moments on this side of the album. But the organ and baritone saxophone alone provide a beautiful sonic experience. Inoyama Land is Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue. Roland Jupiter 8, System-100M, MC-4, Makoto Inoue. Recorded at Private Studio, Kichijōgi & Yugawara from Jan '82 to '83. This track was made by Inoue which he described as him “playing with repetitive octave, machine-like signal sounds.” (02:31) Arp, “Nzuku” from Ensemble—Live! (2019 Mexican Summer). Arp is Alexis Georgopoulos, an American electronic musician, composer, and music producer based in New York. Includes music from his LP, Zebra, as well as four original tracks. Zebra saw the diverse, New York-based artist exploring Fourth World, Japanese avant-garde, minimalism, kosmische, dub, cosmic jazz and more. This album was recorded live in the studio. Limited edition of 500 copies. (06:36) Ariel Kalma, “Reternelle” from Ariel Kalma (1975 Astral Muse). A spacey work for dual saxophones and tape echo, played by Kalma. (12:08) Masuko Shinji, “Woven Music for Silver Ocean” from Woven Music (2011 Jagjaguwar). Japanese singer and guitarist. Some soothing guitar electronics bordering on noise. Let your thoughts wander. Inoyama Land is Yasushi Yamashita and Makoto Inoue. Roland Jupiter 8, System-100M, MC-4, Makoto Inoue. Recorded at Private Studio, Kichijōgi & Yugawara from Jan '82 to '83. This track by Inoue came about by his “synchronizing the Jupiter 8 auto arpeggio with the System100M analogue sequencer with the sequencer VC (voltage control), which generates a curious phrase automatically.” (05:57) White Gourd, “La Lune” from Hermit / La Lune (2013 Psychic Sounds). “White Gourd is the solo work of Suzanne Stone. In addition to being a visual artist, herbalist, teacher, master gardener, and beekeeper, she is well known for involvement as vocalist & saxophonist in the experimental ensemble Million Brazilians.” This recording illustrates the dreamy nature of Stone's sound material used in her live performances; found objects, gongs, 78 player, piano and audio cassette loops. (18:10) Somei Satoh, “Echoes” from Emerald Tablet / Echoes (2020 WRWTFWW). Echoes taken from Somei Satoh's Echoes, Edition Omega Point (2003). It was composed for the "Mist, Sound, and Light Festival", held on May 20-19, 1981 at Kawaji, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Composed and performed by Somei Satoh. For this event, Satoh composed music for the 10-day event organized by the hot spring tourist association of Kawaji. The work was played at the Kawaji hot spring's Ojika river valley using 8 gigantic loudspeakers set-up on hills surrounding the stream, with music played through an 8-channel-tape system. The echoes created by the work were accentuated as they reverberated through the outdoor location. (30:27) Less Bells, “Bird in Hand” and “Forest Ghosts” from Solifuge (2018 Kranky). Less Bells is Julie Carpenter. All Songs by, Violin, Cello, Synthesizers, Fender Rhodes Electric Piano, Omnichord, Julie Carpenter; Optigan Electric Organ, Buchla Music Box, Moog Modular Synthesizer, Dain Luscombe; Synthesizer, mixed by, Kenneth James Gibson; Vocals, Leah Harmon. Violinist/composer Julie Carpenter “. . . weaves orchestral and electronic textures to inhabit that boundary between storm and sun.” Can you say happy astral tripping? (08:39) Opening background music: Ariel Kalma and Richard Tinti, “Forest Ballad” from Osmose(1978 SFP). Organ, Flute, Ariel Kalma; sound effects, Richard Tinti. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. Brace yourself for one of the wildest musician stories you've ever heard. Amarillo, Texas' Hayden Pedigo makes gorgeous fingerstyle guitar music inspired by the likes of Will Ackerman and John Fahey. But Hayden has broken every mold imaginable when it comes to his career in music. The son of a truck stop preacher, Hayden worked at local Amarillo banks, recording music after-hours and aggressively reaching out to his music heroes to see if they wanted to collaborate (they often did). He finally ditched the life of a bank teller, got signed to indie label Mexican Summer, and - thanks to a quirky internet video - found himself running for Amarillo city council (he came in second). As if that wasn't unique enough, at some point, Gucci spotted him and recruited him to be in a fashion show. Stranger still, here's a working musician with a guitar and string endorsement deal (Yamaha and D'Addario) and an NPR Tiny Desk concert under his belt whose only touring to date has been opening for big indie acts like Jenny Lewis and Devendra Banhardt. We talk about growing up in Amarillo, his Opus acoustic guitar, his recent signing to Yamaha, and so much more. You'll love it and you'll love Hayden's unique approach towards his art. Growing up outside of Dallas, TX, Williamson was heavily influenced by her late grandmother. Someone Williamson says has not only inspired her music, but has acted as a muse to help express herself throughtout her carreer. Having a deep love and admiration for the late Jimmy Buffett at an early age, Williamson knew she wanted to be involved in music somehow. She began writting reviews and interviewing bands before she herself would soon be interviewed and written about in later years. Having moved to New York in her early 20s for a brief stint, it was there she felt something was changing within her. She later self-released her first two albums, "Native State" and "Heart Song", on her very own label before meeting back up in New York a few years later with the Mexican Summer folks and starting what would eventually become the journey of her life. Her new album "Time Ain't Accidental" is nominated for a grammy and Williamson couldn't be more excited and blessed for all the hard work shes put in over the years and how its finally paying off. Enjoy!

In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives. West Texas born artist Hayden Pedigo wields a broad defining axe in the world of music, art and human expression. Having been home-schooled and raised in a rather religious enviroment in his youth, Pedigo not only had to search high and low for his passions and interests, but bridge a tremendous gap that would eventually connect him to the outside world of music and like minded people. The fifth episode of The Vineyard Podcast W/ Miles Michaud (Allah-Las) "“A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for” the saying goes. But suppose the proverbial harbor is Los Angeles — a place not particularly known for being the origin of adventures. From the Spanish Conquistadors to the countless starry-eyed nobodies hoping to make it big, LA is usually the destination. So it's no wonder the Allah Las became fascinated with both the carefree spirit and glitter-in-the-gutter lifestyle of their hometown. After three records mining its lore and lure (from the desert to the sea) they have become global ambassadors of not just a place but a location. Having taken their compact California on the road across the world (making stops in North, Central, and South America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Russia, East Asia and beyond), they couldn't help but peek through the other end of the telescope. On their fourth LP, drummer Matt Correia, bassist Spencer Dunham, and guitarists Miles Michaud and Pedrum Siadatian turn their collective gaze outward and toward the horizon. Simply titled LAHS (a reference to a common misspelling of the band's name), their forthcoming release on Mexican Summer finds the band turning in their most cohesive and ambitious work yet." Today on Transmissions: Cate Le Bon, who, for the last decade plus, has made some of our favorite modern records, as well as producing great work for other artists, like Deerhunter and John Grant, who joined us last year on the podcast to talk about their collaboration The Boy From Michigan. Her new album is called Pompeii, an art pop gem out this week on Mexican Summer records. "I think the underlying theme of the record is we will forever be connected to everything," she says, joining host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss the album's genesis, the religious quality of the album's art, wood working, and much more.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Ramona Gonzalez AKA NIte Jewel. Born in Oakland and raised in Berkeley, Ramona studied philosophy at Occidental College. She remained involved in music throughout her studies, playing in a series of rock bands with her then husband, and eventually starting her solo career as Nite Jewel. After a self-released six-song CD-R titled My CD, which caught the ear of New York's taste-making Other Records, Nite Jewel issued the full-length Good Evening through Human Ear Music. Since then, Ramona has released over a dozen albums, EPs and singles on record labels like Mexican Summer and Secretly Canadian, and her most recent album No Sun was released just last week on her own label Gloriette, and it's great! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

L'Rain - "Two Face" from the 2021 album Fatigue on Mexican Summer. Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist L'Rain (real name: Taja Cheek) follows her powerful 2017 self-titled debut with Fatigue, a new album that infuses soul, gospel, jazz, and other styles into her experimental sound. Today's Song of the Day finds her reflecting on a failed friendship. As she states on her Bandcamp: This is a song about a falling out with a friend. The friend was a gemini, hence the title ‘Two Face.' The song is a disjointed imaginary conversation between us. The ‘spooky' parts of the song have the most optimistic lyrics, and the ‘sunny' parts have the bleakest lyrics. The song is mostly a reflection on regret, because the dissolution of our friendship was absolutely my fault and it still haunts me. For over fifteen years Steve Moore has worked to create expansive, synthesizer driven music which challenges the limitations and preconceptions of the machinery itself and the sounds created. He has released numerous records on the likes of L.I.E.S, Mexican Summer, Future Times and Be With Records. Many of these releases have explored variable themes, some have included club ready material whilst others have been strictly focussed on ambience and experimental styles. It is not the case that Steve Moore is a jack of all trades, more so that he produces and creates the music which he wants, when he wants. Where and how it is received is beyond his actualisation, if it makes people dance then great, if it doesn't then that's great too. Most recently he has released new material on Kompakt, the longstanding German label founded by Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape. It might be described as 'techno' but in reality it's as much a cinematic, synth driven, ethereal collection of music which might sound as perfect on a dark and lonely late night drive as it would in any nightclub. In keeping with this theme, we asked Steve to create a mix which reflects his love of ambience, soundtracks and tonality. He does so with delicate precision, showcasing music by the likes of Dopplereffekt, Steve Miller Band, Ennio Morricone and more. There's even an unofficial Steve Moore version of Al Stewart's 'Year of the Cat'.

We discuss Elon Musk on SNL, Trippie Redd & Playboi Carti's "Miss The Rage", new singles from J Cole & Isaiah Rashad, and a controversial tweet from Donald Glover which leads to another discussion about EDP445, because of course it does. Everything leads back to EDP. Madison McFerrin - "Hindsight," a 2020 single on Mexican Summer. Brooklyn-based artist Madison McFerrin says she wrote today's Song of the Day as “a love letter to Bernie Sanders.” She explained the inspiration for the track toAfropunk.com: It was back in May when it was clear that both A) this pandemic wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and B) Bernie Sanders, the only Democratic Presidential candidate advocating for Medicare for All (something that seems beyond important in the middle of a global pandemic), had officially dropped out of the race. I was feeling like the possibility for true progress had, once again, slipped through our fingers. That’s what’s behind the refrain of “coulda said we went for it.” Regardless, we have to move on and move forward with conviction. The single was released as part of Mexican Summer’sLooking Glass series, a project they launched as a response to the pandemic where all proceeds from the digital singles on Bandcamp are given straight back to the artist or the charity of their choice. The year 2021 did not start the way we expected as we observed from afar the storming of the United States Capitol, resulting in 5 deaths. Shortly after, music news sites started exposing American musicians who were involved in the riot. One of them being Ariel Pink, who was unsurprisingly dropped by his record label Mexican Summer due to the event. This poses a question when an artist has opposing political views, are we as fans, able to separate the artist from their craft? IMAGE SOURCE: Christian Bertrand / SHUTTERSTOCK

Like a lot of people, I haven't left my house much for the last seven months. I've spent a lot of time with headphones on, trying to find the dreamiest music possible to escape into and pass the time. EPISODE #88 is crammed full of distorted guitars, piercing synths, vocal histrionics, and meditations on lives both small and large. In this hour, you will hear classics from Lone Justice, The Soup Dragons, and Beverly, brand new jams from White Poppy, Maria Minerva, and The Lemon Twigs, plus a whole lot more. It jumps from country-rock to soul to garage pop to deep dance beats to progressive peacoat rock to trance-folk to throwback Britpop to real-deal Britpop. It's best experienced after spinning around for a few seconds and collapsing on the floor. Enjoy!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts or RSS. 🔴 #Fitz12 .

Wow what a year it's been already, huh?! If you're looking for some low-stakes joy and relief from dealing with life here on Earth in 2020 AD, you've come to the right place. EPISODE #81 of Random Old Records Podcast is stacked with good music and escapism, so slam that download button right now!I've been in a deep country phase ever since watching the Ken Burns documentary last year, so this episode starts off with some classics from Dottie West and Mike Nesmith, plus honky tonk rarities from Johnny David and Joyce Cobb. My other obsession lately has been Various Artists box sets from the Cherry Red group, so I also highlighted some jams by The Tremoloes and Byzantium from the incredible Getting It Together In The Country collection of UK country rock. As if the theme wasn't crystal clear, the interstitial sounds in this episode come from the 1967 stock cars n' moonshine epic Hell On Wheels, starring country legend Marty Robbins! You'll also hear recent jams from Holly Golightly, Paint, Parsnip, En Attendant Ana, and a whole lot more. Dearest Talkhousers! As we near the end of an incredible year at the Talkhouse Podcast, we wanted to re-air one of our fan fave episodes: Cate Le Bon in conversation with Ariel Pink. Make sure to tune in next week for the Talkhouse Podcast Best of 2019 all-star bonanza show! Sending posi-core choose-your-own-holiday vibez, Elia ******* To celebrate Mexican Summer’s ten year anniversary, we paired two of the fantastic record label’s most fascinating artists: Ariel Pink and Cate Le Bon. Backstage at A Decade Deeper: Mexican Summer’s 10 Year Anniversary party at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works arts space, Cate and Ariel—fans of each other’s work who'd never met irl—sat down for a talk before their sets. The two really hit it off, and their wide-ranging conversation takes in a lot: the deep flaws they see in the way music press works; Ariel not always working well with others; and the difficult genesis of Cate’s upcoming LP. Ariel also talks about his favorite site on the internet, and Cate divulges the, um, very weird act she was asked to perform for a shoot. Check it out. Subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. —Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today’s episode was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. Big thanks to Justin Frye and Pioneer Works for hosting this taping. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
2019 is nearly over, and I don't feel like doing a best of the year playlist, so I figured the next best thing to do would be to go back in time! EPISODE #78 is the annual 5/10/15/20 episode of Random Old Records, which surveys the best or most interesting music from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago.1999 features emo and pop punk from Saves The Day, American Football, and the Get Up Kids, while 2004 brings indie anthems from Aloha and Panthers. Going back 10 years to 2009, you'll hear classic garage pop from Grass Widow, Strange Boys, and King Automatic, and 2014 finishes things up with dreamy psych by The Paperhead and the Allah-Las. 2020 will bring more brand new jams to Random Old Records, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy the retro ride!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. Hey folks I'm back! EPISODE #76 of Random Old Records is a soundtrack for this strange and unsettling summer. It doesn't make a lot of sense but there's plenty of good stuff to keep you entertained and keep you thinking, at least I hope so!The show kicks off with a mix of modern soul from Durand Jones and the Indications and Kelly Finnigan, plus recently reissued heat from the Nat Turner Rebellion and a classic from the Dramatics. It flows into a lot of new stuff from all over the place, including tracks by Purple Mountains (RIP David Berman), Nicole Yun, Cate Le Bon, Juan Wauters, Pleasure Leftists, and a whole bunch more. It's hot and tense sometimes, and fresh and easygoing in other places. Enjoy!!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. Filmmaker Chris Gentile, owner of Pilgrim Surf & Supply, discusses his upcoming project, "Self Discovery for Social Survival.” The film was a joint venture with music label Mexican Summer and paired musicians with surfers as they explored Mexico, the Maldives and Iceland. Surfers include 7x World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, Creed McTaggart, Ryan Burch and more. The musicians and pro-surfers embark on a journey that combines a symbiotic relationship between music and the waves, the environment, and local culture. Chris dives into the meaning of the title and the work and inspiration behind this unique surf film. "Self Discovery for Social Survival" is touring now. The soundtrack is available in both vinyl and digital. Go to https://www.sdssfilm.com to find out more when it will screen in your neck of the woods.
In 2011, Tyler sat down with Jamie Brisick, writer, former editor of Surfing Magazine, former pro surfer and one of surfing's great storytellers. We recorded in front of a live audience at the legendary Anthology Film Archives in the East Village, NYC. The conversation was led by images from Jamie's past that represent pivotal moments in his life up until then. From being bright eyed and optimistic as a pro surfer to the realization that he needed to transition into his next phase, which eventually became writing. Jamie delivers classic tales and folklore of surfing's rich history. This is not the definitive Brisick story. Just a glimpse into a fascinating life. Jamie's words and surfing will be featured in the forthcoming Pilgrim x Mexican Summer film "Self Discovery for Social Survival". His latest book is "Becoming Westerly" and has garnered rave reviews and praise. We hope you enjoy another episode from the "Swell Season Surf Archive." http://jamiebrisick.com/archives Artist: Silver Jews Song: Random Rule Album: American Water 1998

If you have not heard Erica Rhodes's comedy, you have the perfect excuse to dive in on June 18, when her new album, Sad Lemon, comes out. Rhodes has been performing in some fashion since she was a kid, modeling at five and playing the voice of Garrison Keillor's conscience on Prairie Home Companion at ten. She was a dancer as a child, then dedicated herself to playing cello before discovering acting and attending the Atlantic Theater Conservatory. That's where she got some advice from David Mamet, that she needed to fix her voice if she was ever going to have a career, an experience that wound up as the subject of a joke on the new album. Turns out, she says, he was right. If Rhodes' voice, high-pitched and friendly-sounding, was a liability in acting, it's an asset in comedy. It allows her to speak honestly about subjects like aging, living alone, and revising your life's expectations and keep the mood light. There's a natural buoyancy in her stand-up. And she writes smart stuff. When you're thirty, you start talking about how you're old, she says. Then when you're forty and realize you really are old, you realize you could have been young for an extra ten years. Her mother is relieved that she never had to face abuse by Harvey Weinstein. “She's like, ‘I know you weren't ‘cause I told your father, if she had been, she'd be a lot more successful.'” Sad Lemon is Rhodes' first comedy album, but it is the work of a seasoned performer. The jokes are tight, the performance is loose, and you get to know some of who Rhodes is through her material. And she has only been doing stand-up comedy for roughly six-and-a-half years. Rhodes says she is not afraid to fail, a hallmark of any artist who wants to improve in their craft, and that has allowed her an accelerated growth rate as a comedian. She also loves language – as illustrated by her grammar material on the album – and that doesn't hurt either. We covered her beginnings in show business, acting in horror movies, and he dedication to her true craft, stand-up comedy. Look for her Sad Lemon on June 18. You can find out more about her on her website are ericarhodescomedy.com, or on Twitter under @ericarhodes. Our featured track this week is “Daylight Matters” from the new Cate Le Bon album Reward, which is out as of May 24 on the Mexican Summer label. When I first listened to this, to me, it had a kind of breezy, summer song vibe. If you're listening casually, responding to the laidback groove and Le Bon's airy vocals as she sings, “I love you, I love you, I love,” you might be forgiven for thinking this is a nice feel good track. If you're listening a little closer, you hear Le Bon is singing, “I love you, but you're gone/If I'm never going to see it again/It's too late now/Your money's lent/Dreams I've had and never shared/Sacrificed/The daylight matters.” There's a wistfulness that tugs at your heart. Take a look at the video, as well, which opens on a concrete building on what looks like a snow-laden field. A few shots later, you find out that it's a barren beach at low tide. Le Bon wanders around in a bright red hoodie, the brown grass turning momentarily green as she passes. It's a groovy, playful lament. Le Bon is heading out on tour in support of the album in June, and you can find the dates on her website at catelebon.com, and follow her on Twitter under @catelebon.
Musician Cate grew up in rural Carmarthenshire, Wales and she sings in both Welsh and English. After an early tour with Gruff Rhys Of Super Furry Animals and a collaborative role in his Neon Neon project, she went on to release a series of inimitable records as a solo artist. Staking out a sound that's as much influenced by folk and prog as it is by psych and krautrock, she neatly sidesteps the hackneyed sound of most modern indie while still making timeless pop. She recently spent some time in the Lake District, where she divided her time between songwriting and learning how to make solid wood furniture. The music eventually became her new album Reward which is released later this month by Mexican Summer records.
It's a couple weeks later than I wanted, but Random Old Records is finally back! EPISODE #74 is a little bit messy. It's silly and sad, loud and soft, joyous and tense, goofy and awkward. Some of the transitions are a bit rough. There's some stuff here that sounds a little out-of-place if you're expecting hard-edged garage punk. Don't let all of that scare you off though, it's still loaded with jams!#74 kicks off with a set of classic Britpop, finishing up a with fresh track from Lush/Elastica/Moose supergroup Piroshka, then careens from electronic pop by Yumi Zouma to long-awaited new music from Australian punks UV Race, to blistering rage from Control Top, to sweet piano pop from Girl Ray, to old-school Random Old Records favorites like People's Temple and Teledrime, to a whole bunch more new and old rock n' roll. It's one of the most frantic and emotional episodes I've ever done, so enjoy the ride!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. "Album Sandwich with Birthday Bread."This episode has a theme of acceptance and understanding. We play outsider’s anthems and talk about perceptions and ideas place on people, the guilt and shame that accompany them, and the ultimate acceptance of who a person really is. We share our personal struggles with accepting ourselves and wrestling with guilt. It’s also our nerdiest episode as we talk about lots of TV shows including Game of Thrones, Ramy, PEN15, and Community and video games like Zelda and God of War. Luke plays a song from earlier in the year in a new edition of Slippin’ Through Our Cracks. We talk about how tall we are, mythology, and killer clowns. On today's episode I talk to Michael Collins AKA Drugdealer. Originally from Boston, Michael much more identifies an an artist rather than a musician, even though his music is quite wonderful. He moved to Los Angeles in 2013 and began making music under different drug pun monikers including Run DMT and Salvia Plath, and eventually formed Drugdealer, which he thinks of as more of a collective than a band and includes folks like Ariel Pink and members of Weyes Blood. Their first album The End of Comedy was released in 2016, and his latest Raw Honey will be released by Mexican Summer on April 19th. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
To celebrate Mexican Summer’s ten year anniversary, we paired two of the fantastic record label’s most fascinating artists: Ariel Pink and Cate Le Bon. PART TIME Faded Rose (Shattered Love) Burger Records / Tough Love Records LP/CD/CS out November 2, 2018 WATCH THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNSppwKkZzs Taken from the album, Spell #6, released on 2nd November via Tough Love (Europe) and Burger (R.O.W.). The European pressing is available on limited edition green vinyl (500 copies). Pre-order here - smarturl.it/PartTimeSpell6 Follow Part Time Facebook - www.facebook.com/parttime623/ Nearing a decade old and with a discography reaching deep into double figures across several different labels (Mexican Summer, Burger, Plastic Response Records) David Loca’s work under the Part Time moniker really shouldn’t require any introduction. Nonetheless, the release of what is officially his sixth album, fittingly titled Spell #6, does signal something of a re-birth and provides a compelling entry point for anyone new to Loca’s prolific output. Whereas previous albums were notable for a charming lo-fi production, Spell #6 takes Part Time uptown. "I describe this album as 'my studio album', because it was entirely re-recorded at my drummer Walter Byer's studio, unlike most of my past releases being bedroom experimental pop recordings." Loca produced the record himself, impressively appropriating a classic 80s pop sound that recalls some of the more grand productions of that era - think Stephen Street’s expressive production on ‘Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me’, Crowded House and The Church’s widescreen interpolation of Paisley Underground jangle, and there's even traces Gerard McMann’s grandiose ‘Cry Little Sister’. In that sense, the record stands as an outlier in Loca’s catalogue, and in doing so sheds the sometimes limiting trappings of bedroom recording Though it is Loca’s project, Spell #6 sees him joined by a consistent supporting cast of fellow writers and performers who add a poise and deftness to his vision, most notably Ariel Pink, who makes a guest appearance on lead single, ‘I Can Treat You Better’. A lead single for its obvious earworm qualities, it also functions as an ideal snapshot of the lyrical themes that run through the entire record: romantic gestures and unrequited love, bad decisions on hot nights/hot decisions on bad nights, and unpinning it all, LA. For this is evidently a West Coast record, like a 2018 take on To Live and Die in LA: expansive, grand, and not a little crazy (in love) from the heat.

I tried coming up with some kind of theme to EPISODE #65 of Random Old Records, but had the hardest time. 18 out of the 20 tracks included here feature a female vocalist, but it's not any kind of feminist statement. It jumps across genres. There's punk and reggae but not at the same time. There's great love songs, great rage songs, and a couple where I have no idea what they are about. It's music for singing and swaying and dancing. The early-going is dominated by British music from the late 80s, thanks to the incredible recent C87 and C88 box sets from Cherry Red that document those years in UK indie history. There's been so many great CD-only releases lately that I have started buying them regularly again. You'll also hear new tracks from second-generation reggae rocker Hollie Cook, NYC poppers The Shacks, and Canadian no-wave dynamos Ruby Karinto. Their self-titled debut LP on HoZac is an early frontrunner for album of the year!Loveland, Ohio's own Colemine Records is also highlighted, via a track from their February reissue of Gloria Barnes' rare deep-soul classic Uptown, and a recent moody soul cut from The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, NY. The episode then finishes up with some new and old post-punk bashers from Aquarium, Grass Widow, Pill, the World, and so much more!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. In what is now a yearly tradition, EPISODE #61 of Random Old Records is a special 5/10/15/20 edition. For a little over an hour, I jump into the time machine and travel back to 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 to take a look around and sample the top jams of those particular years! This time, I start off in 1997 with the stone-cold classic title track from Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out LP. Then, you'll hear a selection of 97's finest pop-punk and emo from the Get Up Kids and Promise Ring. Zipping right along to 2002, there's ripping punk from the Buff Medways and Idlewild, then a jump into 2007 for some rough and raw garage rock from The Ponys, Willowz, and Blitzen Trapper, before ending up in 2012 with Best Coast and Gentleman Jesse. Has it really been five years already since the last Gentleman Jesse record? That's too long, for sure.Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard’s recurring Transmissions podcast. Today, we continue our mini-series in collaboration with the folks at Mexican Summer. In March, AD’s Jason P. Woodbury headed out to Marfa Texas to attend Mexican Summer’s Marfa Myths Festival, a four-day, multi-disciplinary celebration of art and music in West Texas, which resulted in his essay, “There’s No Such Thing As Nowhere.” For this episode, he sat down with Natalie Mering, who records as Weyes Blood. We’ve long been fans of her sounds — our own Chad Depasquale said her most recent record, Front Row Seat to Earth, “evokes an atmosphere reminiscent of private press psych-folk and progressive exploration.” This talk dives deep into her religious upbringing and explores the apocalyptic tone that pervades much of her songs.
Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard’s recurring Transmissions podcast. Today, we’re launching a new mini-series in collaboration with the folks at Mexican Summer. Last month, we sent AD’s Jason P. For this episode, he sat down with the Los Angeles-based four-piece the Allah-Las, to discuss the group’s record store roots, sound, and Reverberation Radio, their long-running online radio series.
While Rachel trekked through San Juan, the Freaks invited Mexican Summer's graphic designer, the incomparable Bailey E, to paint with her ears for a while.
While Rachel and Max escaped Brooklyn for warmer climes, the Freaks enlisted Mexican Summer comrade Colin to join Jake for a mix to remember.
Last year Sonosphere visited Marfa, Texas for the Marfa Myths music festival created by Mexican Summer and Ballroom Marfa. Now in its fourth year, Marfa Myths has grown to a three day fest with hundreds of individuals from around the country in attendance. This year's festival is upon us, so let's travel back in time to Marfa Myths 2016 during a two-day wind storm, where I talk with sound artist Maria Chavez about her performance informed by the wind and chards of vinyl; where harpist Mary Lattimore shares insight into last year's album, At the Dam, informed by road trips out west. Head over this year, March 9-12 to Marfa Myths 2017 and you won't regret it. Tickets at mexicansummer.com
This week on Snacky Tunes we feature an interview with the minds behind The Store, plus a live in-studio performance by Light Asylum.
The season premiere of Snacky Tunes features Chef Luis Navarro and a live in-studio performance by the band PILL. Chef Luis Navarro has dedicated his career to learning and traveling through all of Mexico’s enchanting regions, from Veracruz, Mexico City, Yucatan, Baja California, and Oaxaca studying the craft of the local cuisine, and indigenous ingredients. He is currently the head chef of Lola's Mexican Cuisine in Long Beach, CA. PILL will be touring in Europe throughout the month of October. Their debut album Convenience is out now on the Mexican Summer label.
Allah-Las came through Freak Terrains territory for a two hour set of sunshiny vinyl to prep us for Calico Review, their new record out 9/9 on Mexican Summer.
Katie & Jake join Max in the studio for the first in a new Freak Terrains series: Mex Mix, selections from deep in the heart of the Mexican Summer office.
Weyes Blood fills us in on the inspiration and process behind her new EP Cardamom Times, Baltimore producer Co La phones in to talk No No on its release day, and more Mexican Summer goodness.
A look back at Mexican Summer's sonic offerings of 2015.

I've written dozens of these little blog posts hyping my latest podcast, so what more can I say at this point? RANDOM OLD RECORDS #47 has got the jams, an hour of them to be exact. It's got classics by Nada Surf, The Posies, and Teenage Fanclub. It's got brand new ones by Morgan Delt, Tony Molina, and California X. There's some of the most vital punk rock going these days from Life Stinks and Cheap Time. There's fuzzy, giddy powerpoppunkrock from First Base and Backseat Virgins. There's sleek synth jams from Minks and Gap Dream. There's some downright offensive commercials from 70s TV. There's also MUCH, MUCH MORE!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Random Old Records Podcast is back from its summer vacation! Not gonna try to make up any crazy excuses, the truth is that I was running low on inspiration after 3+ years of blogging and doing a monthly podcast, and decided to put it to rest for awhile instead of cranking 'em out just to keep the streak going.Considering that it was four months in the making, EPISODE #43 of Random Old Records is a one hour MONSTER of fresh rock n' roll for your ears. It starts out with some ugly, noisy jams from Puffy Areolas and the K-Holes and crucial new punk rock from White Lung and Dikes Of Holland, hits the best tracks from the latest releases by The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and highlights some psych pop newcomers like The Marble Vanity and Jacco Gardner. This edition hits all the bases from the noisiest free-form freakouts to tight power pop and everything in between. It's simply a collection of the best shit I've heard all year, and I hope you all have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together. Let's all have fun together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! So yeah, after over three years and 41 monthly episodes, I needed a little break from Random Old Records Podcast. When I started thinking about EPISODE #42 back in March, there was just too much shit going on, and the inspiration wasn't there, so I figured it was best to take a break (my first!) and stack up tracks for awhile. I never imagined that I would actually get e-mails from people asking when the next episode would be out. Well, it was only two, but still! You guys rule, and I can't thank you enough for listening to Random Old Records and patronizing this blog, even though I haven't posted a goddamn thing for months.Anyway, Random Old Records #42 is out, and I'm super proud of this one. This episode functions as a sort of "BEST OF 2012 SO FAR"-type playlist, featuring new tracks from Wax Idols, Natural Child, Gentleman Jesse, Nobunny, Heavy Cream, and Sugar Stems, a bunch of new releases on Trouble In Mind from The Resonars, The Paperhead, Hollows, and Estrogen Highs, Record Store Day Exclusives from Nobunny and The Black Angels, and so much MORE! Hope y'all dig it, check out the playlist below, and be on the lookout for #43 soon!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! More classic episodes from the past ten years are being added to the feed as well, so check those out as well. You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. On the horizon is the yearly 5/10/15/20 episode featuring classic tracks from the past, along with an episode of fresh recent punk and garage rock. The new 12 inch on Mexican Summer, which sold out in a matter of days and is pretty much long gone from distros (try the Nominal shop), is a nice slice of dreamy pop from the sister duo. The A side features the two "hits", while the much more preferable B-Side is two smeared and haunted daydream lullabies that resonate the loudest, at least with me. Three seven inches are forthcoming (PPM, Big Love and Gloriette) and a 12 inch on Art Fag, hopefully in the coming months.LA Vampires, who recently sprung up out of nowhere, drop one of the more innarestin' tracks on the already explodin' with ideas comp, My Estrogeneration. LA Vampires, which is in fact a moniker for this mysterious sole female project, trudges the same warped reggae/dub path already worn by labelmate (and future collaborator!) Sun Araw, albeit in a more chopped 'n screwed way. New split 12 inch with Psychic Reality just unleashed on NNF, more on that soon. Also, keep an ear out for an upcoming collab with Zola Jesus.Despite reams of acclaim from Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, AMG, LA Record, The Stranger, BBC Music, and even Rolling Stone, I somehow completely missed one of 2009's most exciting LPs, namely Double Dagger's More on Thrill Jockey. While jammin' some records over at a friends place, More was eventually put on with a smirk and no mention of the band name. Holy shit! Is this an Unwound rarity I've never heard? Did ...Trail of the Dead ditch the pomp and circumstance and go back to the white-fisted anger of Madonna? Dude, seriously, what the hell is this? The record apparently hadn't even hit the shelves of any decent record store in town, but it was ordered in through the local grocer and I've been immersed in this monster ever since. Only drums, bass and vocals, but what a dense racket these three fellas make. The above mentioned bands are obvious starting points, so fans of those post-hardcore aggressors are urged to seek this one out. Highest recommendation. Thanks to the always quick work of Art For Spastics, I got to the Rotting Chapel site just in time to order one of the last 150 copies of a new Goslings double cassette release. Fans of the Goslings already know what they're getting into, namely, an overdriven-sludge pummeling that's recorded well beyond the red. There really isn't anyone out there making this much of a unique and, yet, highly listenable racket on the planet right now. Archive just re-issued the classic Grandeur Of Hair CD (check that out here) and their collab with Warmth. Archive, with their handmade and silkscreened CD packages, are about the only label out there worth buying a CD from. So go do that, please.Topping Bottoms are a new-ish band that fall in step with the long line of overblown psych bands that have emerged from Japan over the last 25 years or so. High Rise, Acid Mothers Temple, Suishou No Fune, and Mainliner (all of which owe a massive debt to the mighty Les Rallizes Denudes) are the forbearers of the sound, and Topping Bottoms are there to keep the amps smoking. Eye-popping silkscreened inserts with artwork by band member Ryo, who also did the artwork on the recent Blank Realm LP and cassette release.
Looking out the window at a grey sky and pissing rain, I tried to invoke a few last rays of sunshine as the summer officially grinds to a halt. New tracks by Washed Out, who has been absolutely exploding across blogs, Pearl Harbour (following suit?), and Real Estate have been doing their damndest at squeezing the last dying breath out the summer. I kinda wonder if all this beach-y dream pop stuff that has been popping up like dandelions can keep coasting through until next year. Seems doubtful, though looking at the Mexican Summer release list for the next few months, which includes all 3 of the above mentioned artists, they're obviously hedging their bets that way. If it doesn't work out for 'em, at least '09 will be the year that summer crept into the 4 tracks of every bedroom savant in the land and spread rays of cheer across the blogosphere and into tape decks.Haven't checked 'em out yet, but this new-ish Vancouver band Indian Wars have been steadily getting some coverage, but outside of our own city, of course. Great stuff, I have to say. Nothing too new, but jangly, fuzzy, reverb laden garage pop with massive hooks will always perk up these ears. Coupla' shows coming up here in Vancouver, including a show on the 18th of September at some venue called The Enchanted Forest. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of this place should drop a comment below.Though some of his earlier work has left me wanting a little more, the new 2LP Dan Melchior Und Das Menace on S-S is jaw droppingly good. It's also pretty biting, with the most bite left over for a track dedicated to Williamsburg, NYC and the locust-like hipster invasion the NYC suburb has been dealing with lately. Anyways, this monster should satisfy those who loved last year's solid skewed garage-rock album Christmas For Crows.Played it on the show already, but once I heard Woven Bones has a new 12" coming in via Zoo Music, I had to play the excellent b-side off the already excellent Janie 7" from Needless Records. The Austin Texas native is on a flawless run right now, having released 3 dynamite 7"s on some of the best garage labels going right now (ie. Sweet Rot, Hozac and Needless). The 12", so I've been told, should be ready for the first week of October. You'll hear all about it here when it does drop.Speaking of having a flawless year, San Francisco's Fresh and Only's drop LP number 2 this week and it's easily as good, if not better, than their Castleface debut LP from earlier this year. The mp3's were sent my way a few weeks back, courtesy of Color Magazine, and though I don't listen to much music off my computer, this album has burned a hole in my hard drive. I'm not entirely sure how the group is able to peel off so many impossibly infectious songs (so far, the group have released 2 cassettes, 2 seven inches, 2 LPs and there is another LP on In The Red due year's end, aaaand another couple 7"s due by year's end as well. Oh, and don't forget about that Tim Cohen solo LP) but here's hoping they can keep running with it.Vancouver's Defektors are back in the city and they have a new cassettes available, featuring some covers and demos from the forthcoming LP due on Nominal sometime soon. Pretty limited run, so grab while you can...Thee Expressway has definitely shared the love for Belgium's Sloow Tapes here before, but now I've done it live on the air. Excerpts from the kraut-riddled Von Himmel, space-drone of Chicago's Drmwpn (featuring Steve Krakow of Plastic Crimewave/Galactic Zoo fame), and the ethereal forest-folk-psych of Im Jarhtal all got some airplay this week. Most of these cassettes play through as a whole, so only excerpts could be played. But, hopefully, it was enough to turn some people on to one of the best cassette outfits going.More local action: Ahna and Solars have just released a split 7", and, man, have these two put a lot of time into this package. Linocut sleeves and labels, spraypainted inner sleeves and an insert! Limited to 300 copies. Essential Vancouver power-drone/psych release. Any Canadian listeners/readers outside of Vancouver will have a ton of chances to catch Ahna as they embark on a lengthy cross-Canadian tour. Check below for those dates. The fine people at Vancouver's Ketchup Cavern passed along the test pressing for a forthcoming Robedoor 7", which should see the light of day in the next few weeks. Robedoor have been pretty quiet for most of 2009, but this new 7" see's the group stretching out a bit and amping things up. Their doom-drone vibe rooms intact but the group have added a pulse to it and come off with a bit of an Om vibe. Easily the most interesting stuff I've heard from the group (now a trio) in ages. You'll hear more about this one when it's finally ready to launch.Ketchup Cavern also has a brand new one-sided LP by Hamilton, Ontario's Fossils. Haven't had much time to sink my teeth into this one, but it should be ready for airplay for the next show.KC also have a new Sissy Spacek 7" due and two, count 'em TWO, full lengths by Aidan Baker. Keep 'em coming. In other Aidan Baker news, Nadja will be playing the Rickshaw Theatre on Saturday, October 3rd. Ahna and Empty Love both support. That one there is being presented by the skyrocketing Twee Death label and promotion group. Also in the works is a Blues Control show at Little Mountain on November 3rd, Wooden Shjips at the Anza club on Sunday, September 27, and Sic Alps with Magik Markers on Friday December 18th. All those bands will be playing Vancouver for the first time! Thanks for livening up this city a touch, Twee Death. Finally, ending the show in a typically noisy fashion, we have the brand new LP by Vancouver's The RITA, just recently released on RRR. I played the skate side, and rather than go into any details, I'll let the youtube video below do the 'splainin...Limited run on this one that, like all other RITA releases, this one will not last long.
