Berlin-based avant-guitarist Jules Reidy is known for creating elaborate, beautiful textures with their instrument, often in large washes of disorienting sound. As evidenced in several collaborations with previous guest of the show Oren Ambarchi, Reidy's heavily-layered and highly-spiritual work–particularly on their newest release, Ghost/Spirit, which is out soon on Thrill Jockey–is also transfixing, particularly upon close and repeated listens. In this episode, they talk about how compositions by Catherine Lamb, Talk Talk, and Dean Roberts shaped their creative sensibilities. Reidy will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN in March of 2025. Join our Patreon to support the show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm not exactly sure how this mix started. I think I was listening to the track, Outlook Remains Untouched, by  |||||||||||||||||||| , yes that's the actual name the artist goes by. |||||||||||||||||||| on bandcamp   I like the jazzy vibe the tune has. It reminded me of similar tracks from the heyday of glitch and idm that also had a jazz feel to them. Sort of Jazz-ish.   So I grabbed some older tracks from 2001, 2002, 2006, and mixed them with new tunes to come up with this electronic mix that isn't really jazz...more like Jazz-ish. Together, they explore the perfect tracks to ease the pain, from ambient soundscapes to feel-good ska, and discuss how to nurse a hangover in style. From nostalgic memories to surprising musical connections, this episode covers all the bases in a delightful, soothing, and occasionally raucous way. **Key Highlights:** - **Riff of the Week:** Ollie kicks things off with Need New Body's “Hot Shot,” an avant-garde tune full of cartoonish fun. On today's episode, I talk to musician Oren Ambarchi. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Oren began playing free jazz as a drummer in the late '80s, eventually moving from there to New York, where he became integrated in the experimental and jazz scene. Oren's collaborations and albums are too numerous to mention here, but he's played with everyone from Sunn 0)) to John Zorn to Jim O'Rourke to Phill Niblock, and released albums on labels like Kranky, Tzadik and his own, Black Truffle. Oren now lives in Berlin, and his most recent album is Shebang, which was released on Drag City last year, and it is incredible! This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more.     I usually listen to jazz at work while doing some computer maintenance or slogging through emails. I don't keep as close track of standout albums like I do with ambient and indie. So this is a collection of tracks that I happened to enjoy this year and of course they had to fit with the vibe of the whole mix. My top 5 jazz albums are: Charles Lloyd - Trio Of Trios Makaya McCraven - In These Times Vega Trails - Tremors in the Static Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola - Open Oren Ambarchi - Shebang  &  Oren Ambarchi - Ghosted I cheated on number 5 and included two Oren Ambarchi albums, both of which aren't exactly jazz but I don't really know what genre they are so they get plopped into jazz. I absolutely love both albums and it's my list so I can do whatever I want. Number 4 on the list may not be jazz either as I had it in my top 10 for ambient albums. It's the perfect melding of the two genres. Makaya McCraven - In These Times has gotten a lot of mainstream attention and has shown up on a lot of year-end lists and it deserves it. The album by Vega Trails is essentially bass & wind instruments so it's nice and sparse which why I love it. Charles Lloyd - Trio of Trios is the most straightforward jazz and it's fantastic. This is the last mix of 2022. Here's to another good musical year in 2023. Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Omri Ziegele, Where's Africa - Sunflowerpower (That Hat) 05:02    Makaya McCraven - High Fives (In These Times) 08:40    Vega Trails - Train To Kyoto (Tremors In The Static) 11:28    Charles Lloyd - Ay Amor(Live) (Trio Of Trios) 18:38    Jakob Bro & Joe Lovano - Pause (Once Around the Room: A Tribute to Paul Motian) 24:17    Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola - Brevity (Open) 28:31    Dexter Story - Kalimba, Then Space (Feel Recordings Volume 1) 30:55    The Arteries of New York City - The Arteries of New York City (The Arteries of New York City) 33:50    Akusmi - Fleeting Future (Fleeting Future) 38:28    Oren Ambarchi - II (Shebang) 48:50    Carlos Nino - Youwillgetthroughthis, I promise (Extra Presence) 55:15    Ralph Heidel - SOII (Modern Life) 59:10    Bill Frisell - Dear Old Friend(for Alan Woodard) (Four) 61:34    end

Porous Borders: Experimental Music in the Southern Hemisphere

Hello and welcome back to Porous Borders. This is episode 5, the first episode of 2020, and today on the show is an interview with Will Guthrie. If you're not familiar with Will Guthrie's work, he's an Australian percussionist who started out in Melbourne and is based in Nantes in France and he has a lot going on. He's released a huge number of solo percussion and musique concrete recordings and many more collaborations with people like Richard Dawson, Oren Ambarchi, Keith Rowe, Ava Mendoza, and Mark Fell. In 2019 Will released a bunch of great records, a solo tape called Some Nasty on the Indonesian label Hasana Editions, as well as a collaboration with Sam Shalabi, Mark Fell, and Oren Ambarchi called "Oglon Day", and a duo record with Oren Ambarchi called 'Knotting'. In 2018 he also released a split tape with my friend and future podcast guest Gendes on the Noise Bombing label. You'll hear more about that label on next week's episode, which will be out on Tuesday the 7th.Recently, Will has been travelling to Southeast Asia, which is where we met and recorded this interview. Just a quick technical note, you'll hear a bit of popping on Will's mic, which is 100% my bad microphone placement, and not Will's fault at all. I've tried to EQ out the worst of it, but you'll definitely notice it. I really enjoyed this conversation; Will is an incredible musician and a really nice person. Based in Sydney, Australia, Oren Ambarchi is a gifted composer, multi-instrumentalist and improviser who has been traveling the world, crafting a most singular musical vision for the past twenty five years. He's also an enthusiastic listener and avid record collector, a gourmand and happens to be one of my favorite musicians around. On a quick visit to New York for performances with Alvin Lucier and Loren Connors, Oren dropped by for a candid conversation about his early days as an Hasidic student in NYC, record collecting, learning to play guitar, running his own record label and a whole lot more. I love Oren's music deeply and am delighted conversation got to happen. After our talk, Oren and I headed over to Russ & Daughters Cafe and gorged on smoked fish and chopped liver.

Abdul Aziz Muhamat and Michael Green on Manus Island — (Photo: Behrouz Boochani) 'Freedom is not free. You have to pay for it. And we pay; now we are paying for our freedoms.' Abdul Aziz Muhamat Just before Christmas of 2016, Aziz is transferred to Port Moresby for knee surgery. With better phone reception, Michael and Aziz share a long phone call in which they reflect on the year that's ending, the holiday season and the months since they met face to face on Manus Island. The change in Aziz's circumstances is only temporary, but it's still a change – and the call feels like a rare break in the clouds. But just two days later – on Christmas Day – Michael hears news that Aziz's friend and fellow Sudanese detainee, Faysal Ishak Ahmed, has died. ‘I have got energy, so … why can't I just keep in touch with the outside world?' Aziz Photo: Michael Green Even though Aziz is in detention, far away from both his home and from the country whose government is holding him, he's on his phone all day. He's sending messages to Michael, or he's on Facebook with friends and activists, or he's following the latest news in Australia. He's hyperconnected. But his connection to the outside world is complicated and, despite their constant communication, Michael and Aziz never really get to have a regular, real-time conversation. In this episode, Aziz observes his third Ramadan inside detention. Fasting during the day, he sends Michael messages late into the night. And, along with many of the men on Manus, the Australian federal election campaign raises Aziz's hopes. On election night, Aziz and his fellow detainees follow the news forensically to try to make sense of the result and what, if anything, it means for the future of the detention centre. Meanwhile, Michael investigates the possibility of travelling to Manus Island. Could they really meet face to face? Transcript A transcript of this episode is available here (Adobe PDF format). A major ruling by the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court offers hope for Aziz – but, amidst the promise, the men receive devastating news from Nauru. Meanwhile, they're encouraged to accept the option to resettle in PNG. So why doesn't Aziz take it? Aziz, with his smuggled phone 'We don't know what next, but this is really one of the first good news that we ever heard.' Aziz When Aziz learns of Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court ruling that detention on Manus Island is illegal, he sends Michael messages describing his joy and excitement. But his elation soon turns to confusion as he and the other men understand they're anything but free. Meanwhile, news of two separate self-immolations in Nauru's centre reaches Manus – and hits Aziz hard. Aziz and the men are always being reminded of two options to end their detention: go home or resettle in PNG. We've already heard why he can't go home. Aziz describes the sometimes hostile relations with local Manusians – including the violent confrontation resulting in the widely-reported murder of his fellow detainee, Reza Berati – as well as some of the things detainees had been told about PNG in order to dissuade them from escaping. Aziz explains why he firmly believes that starting a new life there is neither safe nor possible … and reveals the other fundamentally important reason why he won't accept the offer to live in Papua New Guinea. Aziz's life has been a story of chance – and choice. As Michael pieces together Aziz's journey from Sudan to Manus, he realises Aziz has been searching for a safe place for about eight years. So what gives him the ability, and the energy, to speak out? How has Aziz fought for so long, and what makes him want to be ‘the messenger'? ‘I'm pretending like I'm really happy, and laugh, and you know, smiling on the phones and doing stuff like that – so they feel like, “Oh, my son is really living in a good environment”. So they think like that, but the opposite is the truth.' Aziz Aziz tells Michael, ‘I have got some people ...waiting for me. They love me, they want me to be with them.' Haltingly, and sometimes with great difficulty, Aziz starts to share stories about his home, the family that he longs to see, and why he fled. Looking to find out more, Michael speaks to Sudan expert Anne Bartlett about the current situation there. As Aziz shares snapshots from his past, Anne talks Michael through the conflict in Sudan, which, despite leaving the headlines long ago, continues to unfold. Michael worries that he's adding to Aziz's trauma by digging up painful memories – ever aware of how hard it is to have these kinds of conversations in short, overlapping messages, without the benefit of reading someone's signals face to face. Meanwhile, Aziz weighs up how much to tell his family about Manus, and explains to Michael why he's sometimes tortured by regret.
