Episode 162 Chapter 23, Radiophonic Music in the United Kingdom. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  This episode of the podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 23, Radiophonic Music in the United Kingdom from my book Electronic and Experimental music.   Playlist: RADIOPHONIC MUSIC IN THE UNITED KINGDOM   Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:36 00:00 1.     Daphne Oram, “Introduction to Oramics” (1960). We're back in our regular format just in time for spooky season and for one of Nick's favourite horror films. A tale of ambiguity, repression, and corruption: it's Jack Clayton's THE INNOCENTS from 1961!CW: due to the nature of this movie's story, child sexual abuse is discussed in general terms. It's a real Freudian time on the podcast this week as we discuss Truman Capote's "skull beneath the skin" gothic concepts, Deborah Kerr's masterful portrayal of psychosexual ambiguity, why you shouldn't use flashbacks, creepy kids, and candelabras (candelabrae?). We're asking the question, how do you adapt a purposefully ambiguous tale? Fittingly, there's no exact answer!Plus, we're talking about how this was a huge leap forward for the horror genre in its cinematography and sound design, and it's a perfect opportunity to discuss electronic music pioneer Daphne Oram.Next time on the pod we visit a core text of the Gartbage crew: SHAUN OF THE DEAD!

Daphne Oram (1925-2003) was one of Britain's first electronic musicians. She co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, a leading sound effects unit known for experimental work in sound, and developed her own “drawn-sound” technique known as Oramics, which involved drawing on film strips to produce sound.  For Further Reading: Daphne Oram: Portrait of an electronic music pioneer The woman who could ‘draw' music An Individual Note of Music Sound and Electronics This month, we're talking about Women of Sound. These women dominated the airwaves: innovating, documenting, and creating the audio landscape we live in today. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Lisa Bella Donna, Johanna M. Beyer, Else Marie Pade, Delia Derbyshire, Pauline Oliveros, Wendy Carlos, Éliane Radigue, Pril Smiley, Suzanne Ciani, Daphne Oram, Constance Demby, Laurie Spiegel, Laurie Anderson, Pauline Anna Strom, Doris Norton, Elsa Stansfield. Episode 98 Women in Synthesis, Part 1: Managing their Musical Identities Playlist Daphne Oram, “Four Aspects” from Oramics (2007 Paradigm Discs). This piece was composed in 1960 after Oram left the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and was running her own start-up. Four Aspects uses the Oramics instrument that she invented. It demonstrated her interest in creating works that were longer than the short snippets of music that she had produced for radio and television themes. The piece was patiently crafted and is strikingly harmonic, exploring a rich tone field that lacked the herky-jerky nature of other tape music of the time. You will hear the development of musical chords and harmonic fields from monophonic tone generators that she combined during mixing, developing gradually shifting texture employing filtering and loops. 8:06 Daphne Oram, “Pulse Persephone” (1965) from Oramics (2007 Paradigm Discs). Composed, realized, and produced by Daphne Oram. This was produced for the Treasures of the Commonwealth exhibition at the Royal Academy of the Arts. 4:03 Daphne Oram, “Costain Suite” (1965) from Oramics (2007 Paradigm Discs). Composed, realized, and produced by Daphne Oram. Music for a film production, circa 1970. 13:17 Teresa Rampazzi, “Immagini Per Diana Baylon” side a (1972), from Immagini Per Diana Baylon (2016 Die Schachtel). Music realized using analogue equipment, Teresa Rampazzi. One of her three known soundtracks for art installations. The analog work she completed at her Nuove Proposte Sonore (NPS) studio had striking parallels to the work of Daphne Oram in the UK. This piece was intended to be looped for 180 minutes while visitors perused an exhibit of abstract sculptures by Diana Baylon. 16:15 Teresa Rampazzi, “With the Light Pen” (1976) from Musica Endoscopica (2008 Die Schachtel). Composed and realized by Teresa Rampazzi at the Centro di Calcolo di Ateneo, Università di Padova. This was the first work realized with the Interactive Computer Music System (ICMS), in real-time. “The timbre, made by additive synthesis, adding frequencies in algebraic sequence, was sometimes acoustically harsh. On the other hand train pulses with regular rhythms were sweetened by long harmonic, dissolving tails.” (Rampazzi). 8:43 Teresa Rampazzi, “Atmen Noch”(1980) from Musica Endoscopica (2008 Die Schachtel). Stereophonic version (quadraphonic original) realized at the CSC (Centro di Sonologia Computazionale dell'Università di Padova). Composed in 1980 at the CSC Computer Music Center in Padova. Winner of the second prize at the VIII Concours International de Musique Électroacoustique, Bourges. Based on the mathematical analysis of “intersection sets, the elements of which were timbres. It was preceded by five months of research on timbres that were obtained from multitudinous ratios between the carrier and the modulating signals and inverted relationships with the ICMS program by Graziato Tisato.” (Rampazzi). This work will not immediately strike you as computer music, which is part of its beauty and uniqueness for all time. 15:16 Ruth White, “Wings Clipped (Too Many External Involvements / Flight Stopped” from 7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards And Pinions (1969 Limelight). Produced and realized by Ruth White. Clavichord, Harpsichord, Organ, Piano, Moog Modular Synthesizer, tape operations, Ruth White. 6:04 Ruth White, “Wanting Wings (Limited Capacity / No Flight Possible” from 7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards And Pinions (1969 Limelight). Produced and realized by Ruth White. Clavichord, Harpsichord, Organ, Piano, Moog Modular Synthesizer, tape operations, Ruth White. 3:42 Ruth White, “Love Gives Wings (With Wings)” from 7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards And Pinions (1969 Limelight). Produced and realized by Ruth White. Clavichord, Harpsichord, Organ, Piano, Moog Modular Synthesizer, tape operations, Ruth White. 8:48 Opening background music: Daphe Oram, “Introduction” and “Power Tools” from Oramics (2007 Paradigm Discs). Voice and electronic realization, Daphne Oram. Ruth White, “The Litanies Of Satan” from Flowers of Evil (1969 Limelight). Ruth White, all instruments including the Moog Modular Synthesizer. Realized by Ruth White. 6:56 Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. His latest is called Strange Dance, and it's out now on Bella Union. It's a sweeping and textural listen, envisioned by its creator as something like a "Carole King record meets Daphne Oram." We caught up with Phil to dig in. Along the way, we discuss his songwriting approach, explore why he decided to not play drums on this new outing, the side project arrangements enjoyed by Radiohead, the band's relationship to peers like Portishead, Wilco, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the 20th anniversary of Hail to the Thief, and much more.  Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. I also recorded on tape the sound from the real-time map of lightning occurring across the globe and the sound of the magnetosphere from HereGOES satellite, broadcast live via the installation at Wave Farm. The voices feature passages from two books, An Individual Note by Daphne Oram and Água Viva by Clarice Lispector. O roteiro foi adaptado por William Archibald e Truman Capote. O enredo acompanha a Srta. In 1949 a 23-year old composer named Daphne Oram wrote a pioneering new work for two orchestras, live electronics and turntables that was subsequently lost for decades. Only vague references survived until composer and archivist James Bulley rediscovered the complete score in 2015. He enlisted composer and turntable artist Shiva Feshareki to help him realize the electronics using the technology that would have been available to Oram. In 2018 the work was finally premiered at the BBC Proms. It was the first work of its kind and it is a masterpiece.

While the history of electronic music includes many notable men whose stories have been frequently celebrated, the genre has also provided a space for a wide range of extraordinary women to create a musical room of their own. Working with machines meant being able to sidestep many of the hurdles that stood in the way of women aspiring to a musical career, such as access to orchestras, commissions and concert halls, and an over-riding failure to be taken seriously by the male musical gate-keepers. Elizabeth Alker examines the connections between early pioneers such as Eliane Radigue and Daphne Oram (who gained access to studios thanks to the second world war), those musicians who followed in their immediate wake such as Suzanne Ciani and Laurie Spiegel, and today's generation of female composers. Anna Meredith, Holly Herndon, Afrodeutsche and JLin all speak with Elizabeth about their own work and the debt they owe their predecessors. Central to the story is the composer and academic Pauline Oliveros, who founded the San Francisco Tape Music Centre, and whose theories around deep-listening as a feminist act shape so much of the texture of the music created by the women and men who followed her. This is music, Elizabeth argues, which has an emphasis on tone and texture. This lends it a particular quality making it both distinct from its male equivalent and also profoundly beautiful and rich. Discover the unsung female pioneers of electronic music in our Sisters With Transistors special. This one’s a real treat for your ears! First up, Anna is joined by collaborators on the doc: writer-director Lisa Rovner and pioneer Suzanne Ciani. Lisa explains the process of finding archive footage and constructing the ‘herstory’. From Buchla concerts to making music for the movies, Suzanne recalls her experience of being a female composer in the 70s and 80s. She remembers being one of the first women to solo score a Hollywood movie, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, in 1981. Keep listening for Suzanne’s discovery of a female film composer working in the 40s! And stay tuned for advice if you're keen to follow in her footsteps. Next, Anna chats to contemporary electronic composers Shiva Feshareki and Elizabeth Bernholz (aka Gazelle Twin). They recount their careers so far and talk about the unexpected positives of working in a male-dominated industry. Shiva explains how she got involved with Sisters With Transistors, and Elizabeth describes her powerful emotions when watching it. Together, they discuss the pioneers they look up to and those they have discovered through the doc. In 'Come Fly the World', journalist Julia Cooke explores the history and legacy of Pan Am, one of the world’s most iconic airlines. Julia focuses on the adventurous lives and careers of the international jet-age stewardesses of Pan Am – a job which no longer exists - who were expected to fit a specific physical profile, speak multiple languages and demonstrate diplomacy. As the women worked to maintain the glamourous image of Pan Am, they interacted with international politicians and helped to transport American soldiers to and from war zones, during the Vietnam War. The stewardesses witnessed global history and world events, playing a crucial role in major wartime missions including the evacuation of children during the fall of Saigon. Throughout the pandemic, pregnant women have been asked to make their own judgements on the risk of vaccination versus the risks of COVID-19. With very little real-world data available, that decision has been no easy task however two new large scale studies may now help prospective parents feel more confident in balancing the costs and benefits. One study of over 35,000 pregnant women given the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines showed no evidence of them being unsafe. The second study looked at what happens to pregnant women if they do catch COVID-19. Aris Papageorghiou, a Professor of Fetal Medicine at the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute, talks to Anita about the results of this global study. He also explains why we should consider allowing pregnant women to be vaccinated sooner, rather than making them wait for their age-related invite to arrive in the post. Hair removal is a rite of passage for a lot of women and apparently some influencers are encouraging shaving your face! Apparently facial hair removal is nothing new - Queen Elizabeth I started the trend by shaving her facial hair, and women even shaved their eyebrows off. So how popular is it with women today? Beauty therapist and make up artist Naveeda discusses. A new film called 'Sisters With Transistors' about the unsung female pioneers of electronic music, is released today. Featuring women like Clara Rockmore, Suzanne Ciani and Delia Derbyshire, of Dr Who theme fame, the film is narrated by Laurie Anderson and celebrates the achievements of women whose male counterparts took centre stage in historical narratives around ground-breaking electronic composition. The director Lisa Rovner joins Anita as does Bishi, the singer, composer and artistic director and co-founder of WITCiH, The Women in Technology Creative Industries Hub, a platform to increase the visibility women at the intersection of music, creative technology and STEM. In this conversation with Helen Leigh, we learn about her upbringing in Wales, how she first learned about electronics at a makerspace in London, why she objects to call herself "self-taught" and her new lab in Portland Oregon. She came from a family that consumed lots of music and her early musical experiences were singing choral music in church in Wales. Her work today still bears the influences of sounds of the high church of her childhood. We talk about why harpsichords went of out fashion and how electronic music got started with pioneers such as Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire. We talk about technology from reel-to-reel tape recorders to synthesizers and to making electronic music with Makey-Makey and the Bela board. Shock World Service 081: Trigger Points by Sunken Foal 22/10/18 Dublin, Ireland 1. Daphne Oram - Melodic Group Shapes Simple, primitive synthesis and effects, and all the better for it. Daphne Oram had a unique method of drawing shapes on 35mm film and covering it to sound. I'm not sure if his is an example of the method though. 2. Raymond Scott - Sleepy Time Some of the tracks of this ‘Soothing sounds for Baby' album are perhaps a little harsh and piercing for today's infant but I think this one has a comporting warm tone. I love how you can hear the difference between each voice of the synth sequence. 3. Monoton - Jsca I became aware of Konrad Becker's early 80's synthetic soundscapes some years ago and I've been a huge fan since. Mono Tone / Monotonous: however you want to take it is fine by me. 4. Bernard Parmegiani - Jeux de Configurations Parmegiani is kind of a Daddy for me. By simply deviating from conventions in art you can pretty easily come up with something considered Avante-Garde. I find that sometimes the emperor is wearing no clothes. But making that work compelling, absorbing or transcending is another matter. I listened Parmegiani's ‘La Création Du Monde' in college in a pitch black room played back on a big set of Genelec mid field monitors and it spoke to me in volumes. Hope it speaks to other people just as much. 5. Arnold Dreyblatt - Luftmenschen IMinimalist composer Arnold Dreyblatt explores the psychoacoustic properties of prolonged stringed instrument techniques on his ‘Second Selction' LP. Well worth lying down for. 6. Rashad Becker - Dances V This is kind of ‘The New Music' for me. Really descriptive synth work-outs with little or no spacial affectation. Lots of dynamics and energy. The absence of regular rhythm and melody is so welcome. 7. Duane Pitre - Section IV Big lovely acoustic drones. Exploring layers of harmonics with washing movements. This is from 2012's ‘Feel Free' and is totally worth a listen. 8. Meyers - Inhaler II Another artist I kinda think of as ‘The New Music' ; ). Apparently, Meyers was struck down with a bad illness and relegated to a small computer/contact mic set up and set about making a bit of a masterpiece in his ‘Negative Space (1981–2014)' LP. 9. Roly Porter - Birth Roly Porter's ‘Life Cycle of a Massive Star' is a massive, massive album. Originally a member of Planet-Mu's Dub Step visionaries Vex'd along with Jamie Kuedo. Kinda does what is said on the tin. 10. Lasry / Baschet - Quatuor Pour Trois The opening titles to early 80's children's television show ‘Music Box' are forever inscribed on my brain. A few years ago I found out the music was by Jacques Lasry and played on the Cristal Baschet (invented by the Bashet Brothers), the creepy sounding glass & metal rodded instrument. So unique sounding and beautifully composed to get the maximum ‘odd' but memorable recordings. This track is from ‘Les Structures Sonores' album and is well worth checking out. 11. Autechre - Mirrage Taken from Ae's latest ‘NTS Session (part 4)' LP. People have been crying out for Autechre to make more legato music since their ‘Vletrmx' opus in 1995. We got a couple of hours of it this year and it's deep to say the least. This is probably my favourite track from the eight hour album put out this year (2018). 12. Kate NV - BUG Really charming, free sounding compositions from Kate NV. Beautifully illustrated postcards to go along with all the tracks from her для FOR LP. 13. Brian Eno - Innocenti Eno seemed to have really codified his ambient approach by 1992's ‘The Shutov Assembly' LP. So much patience and space and still so slick. I go back to this LP a lot. Neither happy or sad, just right ; ) Read notes on all 52 tracks at at http://www.shockworldservice.com/081/

Our next episode is yet again a unique, one-off installment showcasing a veteran of the New York techno scene and a man who during the early 90s pioneered and helped push the sound of this city out to the world, STEVE STOLL. This exclusive mix is a brief overview of his label, Proper NYC, in order to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Steve wanted to dedicate this journey to his friend and producer, Vincent Capuano (V1NZ), who is no longer with us, as well as the artwork featured here to Pete Namlook, which was taken from his latest album, Zero Point Crossings, on Fax Records. This a one-of-a-kind contribution, trailing the old-school, the minimal, and the raw, pure techno sound coming out of Proper NYC during the 90s. We are very grateful to be able to showcase this and we thank Steve for taking time out of parenthood and the American Midwest (where he and his family reside currently), to bring us this piece of frozen time. At last, we strongly suggest you check his latest album, Praxis, released this past January on Psychonavigation, which is a superlative ambient composition spanning 16 tracks and dedicated to the work of the following 3 electronic pioneers – Daphne Oram, Delia Derbyshire, and Laurie Spiegel. This is Steve Stoll live (recorded in one take exclusively for Erratic) celebrating 20 Years of Proper NYC. Enjoy! TRACKLIST 01. Steve Stoll - Praxis - Psychonavigation 02. Exactly a year ago, Thomas Pujols released his fifth full-length as Nebulo. The album’s launch was celebrated with an exclusive mix, Cardiac Mixtape on Headphone Commute. Today we seem to replicate this past. Once again, the beloved Hymen Records releases Nebulo’s next full-length, Castles. And once again, we compliment the album with this mix. This mix is made of old tracks (1951 for the incantation for tapes / 1960 for Daphne Oram / 1991 for Sean Booth), very recent ones (like the Dopplereffekt EP released just this month ) and 3 tracks taken from my new album out on October 29th on Hymen. The idea was to play with analog synthesis, (post)-techno beats and sonic experiments. For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com
