A surefire provider of deep, complex weapons for the dance floor and beyond, French-born, Berlin-based artist Kangding Ray has been minting some of the most strikingly unique techno records in recent memory. His body of work for some of the most reputed record labels out there, including Raster Noton, Stroboscopic Artefacts and his own outlet, ara, cuts an introspective path, halfway modular-leaning escapology and beat-driven abstraction. From his background in architecture, his musical approach retains that fondness for structure and the creation, or re-creation of space, both as an actual object and a mental projection. Immerse yourself into KR's minutely designed headspace with this two-hour deep and intimate audio dive.
Order and disorder, a freeform haze of garbage guitars, shorted electronics, found detritus, collage, linear songs, sounds from strange lands. This album is listed as one of his special projects consisting of diary sketches in sound. Described as “an ambient oriented compilation of Sakamoto's music journal from 2001 after eye-witnessing 9/11 from his home NYC.” This one of his most moving essays in sound, consisting of his piano sketches treated with electronics. English: @dasha-rush is a Russian-born artist who spends her time traveling the world while building a fairly wide variety of music-related art projects. Engaging in releases on labels like Sonic Groove and Raster Noton and collaborations with a few others, still most of his work is released on his own Fullpanda Records imprint and the more experimental Hunger to Create sub-label. Dasha sees gender as a starting point, not a destination. Presenting a mix of rather rare electronic experimentation more akin to the brief underground music movement, whose roots partially go back to the early 20th century and rise to major art movements to this day. Geige and co-founder of the prestigious Raster-Noton label. He lives as a musician, video artist and producer in Berlin. He had this to say about his mix; "The mix is to promote the SICHTEN 1 album I had the honor to compile, so it contains mainly the music of the artists represented there on. But instead to just repeat the tracks from SICHTEN, I thought to chose new, partly unreleased material as far as available: the title track of Zavoloka’s brand new PROMENI album, new material by Benjamin Brunn, two tracks from Warnecke’s 2016 album COMPUTERMUSIK EINS (FÜR DIE OHREN), and some collaborative work by Retina.It. The mix includes as well two tracks by raster label mates Island People, resp. AtomTM (in its ’94 incarnation Lassigue Bendthaus), plus some music I enjoyed recently. Hope you enjoy too." In Hour 2 it's Graham Van Pelt who recently released 'Time Travel', his first record in the four years since he moved from Montreal to Toronto, and he’s no longer Miracle Fortress, or Inside Touch, or any of the aliases he’s used to record over the years. He’s just Graham Van Pelt. He told us; "This mix includes some of the tracks I turned to for inspiration while I getting my new record ready, as well as some other vibes I've been feeling more recently. Larry Heard and Ben Cenac(Dream 2 Science) are the producers I've been most inspired by while working on tracks over the past couple years, while labels like Sounds Of Beaubien West, Rush Hour and ASL Singles Club have been keeping things fresh and fun in my world. I think this mix spans a lot of my tastes both old and new and gives a good sense of my moody headspace of late." Hour 1 - Frank Bretschneider: Framework 12 - Mads Emil Nielsen Love Control feat. Draw the Line Radio Show is presented by jacki-e and features the best music from female DJs and producers. The first hour consists of a mix of tracks written and produced by women. This week it features the LP 'If Only - A State of Peace' by Nur Jaber, and the EPs 'Razor' by ANNA and 'NAF 97' by Camea. Helping me Draw the Line with the guest mix in the second hour is Ly Sas who comes from Prague, Czech Republic. She used to be a guitarist and songwriter for various rock and metal bands. Influenced by electronic music records coming from Detroit and Berlin she started to make and perform her own beats. Her music draws upon underground and industrial techno but also pulls ambient and dark textures into its orbit. Her debut EP, a collaboration with Nick Elia, is to be released on Variance later this summer and she’s currently spending lots of time in the studio developing her craft and preparing new tracks. There are few musicians who manage to explore the convergence between techno and experimental as successfully as David Letellier. Known as Kangding Ray, he has been producing for almost a decade, releasing his music exclusively on Raster-Noton and Stroboscopic Artefacts. The aesthetic domains of these two labels epitomizes Kangding Ray's complex sound—it's an aesthetic that tests boundaries, evolving tirelessly in its exploration of texture, rhythm, and sound design. Letellier's foundations in rock and musique concrete give his music a vitality and uniqueness that has won fans the world over, from discerning avant-garde–electronica listeners, all the way to devoted clubbers. This set is a partial recording of a DJ set KR made last year in a club. Kangding Ray has long been a favorite at The Bunker and we're looking forward to having him join us at The Bunker at Good Room here in Brooklyn on April 28, 2018. A collaboration mix with Headphone Commute's Mike Lazarev, in which we take five minutes for each turn without knowing the others tracklist. The result: Bipolar! --- originally published on Ambientblog --- We had no clear concept for this mix when we started, other than 'each turn takes 5 minutes, we'll stop at 60, and we'll see where it gets us'. We were unaware of each other's tracklist (apart from what our ears told us). The result is a thrilling ride, where each part is a reaction to the previous section. Not exactly what we'd call an 'ambient' mix, because it's extremely dynamic. Sections may range from deep sleep sections to exuberant enthusiasm - hence 'Bipolar'.It's like a full life's story comprised in one hour. Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro is known for her work as a minimalistic explorer of experimental and ambient territories. Here she has made a mix featuring Japanese and Scandinavian music for acoustic string instruments, rhythmic electronic music, and two works for organ composed by her colleagues and dear friends Isak Edberg and Kali Malone. In her own words: "This is music that inspires me, music that brings clarity to mind. Arranged in this particular order, this collection of music reveals some of the ways in which seemingly distinct kinds of music are ultimately non-different. “ Tracklist: Isak Edberg - Lamé [Composed for the Dübenorgan in Stockholm in 2010] Yoshi Wada - Off The Wall I [Off The Wall, FMP 1985] Gabor Lazar - Crisis of Representation #4 [Crisis Of Representation, Shelter Press 2017] Kim Myhr - Sleep Nothing, Eat Nothing [All Your Limbs Singing, Sofa 2014] Mark Fell - Multistability 3 [Multistability, Raster-Noton 2010] Henry Flynt - Celestial Power [You Are My Everlovin / Celestial Power, Edition Hundertmark 1986] Kim Myhr - Harbor me [All Your Limbs Singing, Sofa 2014] Mamoru Fujieda - The Third Collection, Pattern IX [Patterns of Plant, Tzadik 1997] David Stackenäs - Morioka [Bricks, Clean Feed 2017] Kali Malone - Glory Canon III [Organ Dirges 2016-2017]
CLOT Magazine got the chance to talk to musician Robert Lippok and video artist and live performer Lillevan during 2016 edition of Unsound Festival: Dislocation (Kraków, Poland) where they were presenting Gletschermusik together with musician Askat Jetigen from Kirzystan. Robert Lippok is an avant-garde German musician and visual artist and composer which has been an influential player in Berlin’s thriving experimental music scene from a very early age, with bands like To Rococo Rot for which he is best known, while his solo work has been featured in the renowned label Raster-Noton. Lillevan an animation, video, and media artist, was a founding member of the visual and music group Rechenzentrum (1997-2008) and has performed and collaborated with many artists like Christian Fenesz and Vladislav delay Gletschermusik is a dislocated audio-visual performance that blends art, science, and folklore. It uses the sounds and images of Central Asia’s melting glaciers as a source of inspiration to promote a dialogue and raise awareness of the deterioration of the planet, climate change, and environmental problems. Retreating glaciers, rising sea levels, and shrinking lakes are some of the consequences of rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns. This is particularly important for the people of Central Asia, whose water supplies depend on the region’s glaciers. The rising temperatures, global warming and the hole in ozone layer (which luckily is beginning to close according to dr Ryan Neely, Lecturer in Observational Atmospheric Science at Leeds and will be “healed” by 2050) are the three main agents taking part in the melting of the glaciers. We talked to Robert Lippok and Lillevan over one hour about the inspiration behind Gletschermusik, how the expedition was, their experiences during the project, new ideas about what dislocation is, isolation, solitude, and loneliness. Hoping our conversations makes you reflect on the problematic issues we are facing in these challenging times and how artists can question our perception on such important matters. This podcast was produced by CLOT Magazine editorial team and Stephen Mclaughlin for Unsound Festival in Collaboration with OFF Radio Krakow. Music from Gletschermusik and An Trinse kindly provided by the artists

For this mix I aimed to create a dreamlike and timeless atmosphere - dark (but not too dark). It is calm, yet there are many shifting scenes, many passing landscapes and some conflicting emotions... Following the slow and deep brew of the last episode, our 60th mix comes as an ever-cerebral and purely sonic adventure by one of the most celebrated duos in techno today , WOO YORK. The next hour is the recording from when they performed live at NextSound Festival (an all-live acts and advanced music/arts festival) alongside Byetone from Raster-Noton, held at the underground Closer Club in their hometown of Kiev, Ukraine, last month. This live performance was one of its kind as it explores live sound arrangement and manipulation (100% improvised), which is the concept and setup they specialize at the moment, aspiring to take it even further. We are truly humbled by the opportunity of hosting these amazing and very talented guys on this special occasion and releasing this extremely organic and experimental live session. Production-wise, their Grad EP released mid-last year was received exceptionally well, which included superb remixes by Jeroen Search, Deepbass, and Ness (all past guests in this series). For this year, they already have a slew of 12" planned across Soma (first one coming out this month), Audio Assault, and Fullpanda. Aside from keeping themselves busy in the studio, they plan to continue performing their refined live-act while creating new sounds and textures. With this said, we hope you enjoy the following 55 minutes of mind-blowing, abstract, futuristic music as much as we do. Zack Hemsey starts off in an Hollywood blockbuster mood before Ninja and Yolandi drop the epicness with Enter The Ninja. Doomtree and Emancipator get heavy with big beats and rhymes. We do a throwback to the Bricolage era with Tobin's Easy Muffin before we slow things down with a little JJ. After the break things really slow down with Eleh's epic bass rumble of an Homage To The Pointed Waveform (proper stereo listening experience recommended). We enter the new year with some dark atmosphere courtesy of Vancouver local Beesaur. After that we start getting groovy with a classic from the Orb and a wicked head nodder by Evan Marc and Steve Hillage. Orb collaborator Thomas Fehlmann shakes our booties and slams the beats from his live set at MUTEK a few years back before a new one by The Orb full of tripped-out dirty beats. Byetone drops some dirty hiphop Raster Noton style and then our man Reso closes us out in style. Tracklist: Beesaur – Red Beesaur – Eve The Orb – Close Encounters Even Marc & Steve Hillage – Theta Phase Thomas Fehlmann – MUTEK Live Daft Punk – End Of The Line The Orb – Go Down Evil Byetone – Golden Elegy Reso – Coronuim
Big, hard beats from Byetone and Modeselektor are dropped as we get this show underway. Modeselektor's Kill Bill Vol.4 gives way to some old school rave style with a Fatboy Slim remix that somehow slips into techno producer supergroup the Hoxton Whores remixing Cream before we drop the bongo funk of Tim “Love” Lee. After the break we get into contemporary dub with Rhythm & Sound showing us the way and we finish off with the Moody Boyz (pre-KLF Jimmy Cauty no less!) getting real slow and heavy. This one's tasty. Squarepusher! We open with Squarepusher's epic organ heavy, squelsh-laden Tundra4, one of his best compositions ever, and follow that up with the jungle madness of Venus No.17 with its choice and perpfectly peppered MC drops before laying down one of DJ Food's finest mixes: Squarepusher slowed into Mike Ink from '96. Then it's nothing but chilling out with the likes of Murcof and a surprising entry by NiN before we nearly fall asleep with the lush sounds of Biosphere (and the giant from Twin Peaks). We end where we start with some Squarepusher drone action. Tracklist: Squarepusher – Tundra4 Squarepusher – Venus No.17 (Acid Mix) Squarepusher – Problem Child Mike Ink – Paroles Murcof – Camino Nine Inch Nails – Ghost I, track 2 Byetone – Heart Biosphere – The Things I Tell You Squarepusher – Last Ap Proach
Today we are honored to share with you a special mix from Richard Chatier. With numerous releases on his very own LINE, as well as 12k, Raster-Noton, Room40, Spekk, Die Stadt and many other experimental labels, Chartier is a highly regarded sound artist, manipulator and sculptor of ambient, minimal, and reductionist electronic music. I could continue spewing praise, but will opt for 'less is more' aesthetic, letting music speak for itself, in honor of the master. Fans of clicks and glitch rejoice! Raster-Noton is in the house! This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. Signal is the Raster Noton supergroup trio of Alva Noto, Byetone, and Frank Bretschneider. It is a very rare treat to have them perform live, and we were honored to present them at The Bunker. Part 4 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.
This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. Byetone stepped out of his role as administrator and graphic designer of Raster Noton to deliver an amazing album last year, "The Death of a Typographer". This set features a lot of the heavy industrial material from that album. Part 3 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.
This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. Frank Bretschneder, also known as Komet, delivers a mind-bending set features material from one of our favorite recent albums, 2007's "Rhythm". Unfortunately Frank's stunning visuals are not a part of the recording, but the music really does speak for itself. Part 2 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.
This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. While Carsten Nikolai is very well known in the art world, he has also made quite a name for himself in the music world with his many releases as Alva Noto. Here he presents a set that features material from his "Unitxt" album. Part 1 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.
Overcoming the segregation of forms of sensory perception. A portrait of artist Carsten Nicolai.
With her porcelain figures, the artist Shary Boyle uses delicate ornamentation in the representation of contradiction and hybridity. A view into the manufactory of the fragile.

The RF podcast has hit the quarter century mark — woot! In honor of this quasi-auspicious occasion, I bust out not one but two new tracks by COH (including a cracking semi-rarity), as well as not one but two tracks from Pedro Carneiro’s Improbable Transgressions 2CD (which I inexplicably misidentify on mic as Impossible Transgressions — whoops). There’s also fresh music from Giuseppe Ielasi, White Williams, Frank Bretschneider, and Jessica Rylan (yes, I mispronounce the name of her song, “Phantasia,” just to make things extra special — whoops again). There are also some golden oldies in the mix for your listening pleasure, so enjoy! Rare Frequency Podcast 25: Supremely RF (opening music: Raymond Scott, “Portofino,” Manhattan Research, Inc. There is a lot of scratchy vinyl and much to enjoy on this latest program, which is the first non-special edition podcast in quite some time. Enjoy! Note: In the podcast, I neglect to mention that "Sunny-Side Up" is a duo between Christian Marclay and Gunter Muller. Very bad form. Consider yourself fully informed now.
