Serena Williams is widely regarded as one of the best athletes of all time. But far too often her passion on the tennis court has been criticized as aggression. So why do Black sports women seem to attract more scrutiny than other athletes? Letisha Engracio Cardoso Brown says it’s because the same commonly-held stereotypes for Black women in society frequently get repurposed into sport. And: The USA men’s basketball team boasted a perfect Olympic record of 63-0. But Russia had developed a scrappy, up and coming team of their own. So, when the two basketball teams collided at the 1972 Olympics - it was bound to be a showdown of epic proportions. Christopher Elzey calls this game the greatest WTF moment in sports history and explains how it opens a window into Cold War animosity. Later in the show: From Stone Cold Steve Austin to The Undertaker, the 1990’s were one of professional wrestling's most popular eras. Marc Ouellette says this golden age of wrestling reflected a perceived decline in masculinity throughout society. Plus: Many elite athletes, including Eliud Klipchoge - the famous Kenyan who ran the fastest marathon in 2019 - have endorsed hydrogel technology. But does the stuff actually work? Dan Baur says it's inconclusive at best.
How does God speak to us today? And what do we make of those who say that Sola Scriptura may be too confining? I'll talk it over with Don Green, founding pastor of Truth Community Church in Cincinnati. Plus: Many people today think of Jesus Christ as a mild-mannered savior who never got angry. But what does the Bible say? Tim Harlow, senior pastor of Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park, Ill., joins me to talk about it and his book, "What Made Jesus Mad?" That's next time on Friday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.

SHR # 2571 :: How Gut Microbes Affect Mood and Cognition plus Radiation in Pediatric Cancers Lifelong Health Impact - Matt Gallant - Over the past decade we've discussed the link between the gut and the brain. This is especially true when it comes to cognition and mood. Overgrowth of the wrong microbes lead to morning brain fog, impaired memory, depression, anxiety and more. These links have been identified conclusively through several research papers. The microbes that inhabit your gut eat your food. They also excrete chemicals as an end product of digesting your food. We know that when they overproduce d-lactic acid it leads to impaired cognition, depression and what is generally called brain-fog. . If the wrong bacteria can produce these unwanted effects on the brain, the opposite is true as well. If you have higher populations of -good- microbes they eat your food and produce chemicals that improve brain function, support mood and mental acuity. How do you improve the presence of these beneficial microbes in your gut? Listen and learn. PLUS Many cancers treated with ionizing radiation tend to cause unwanted tissue damage in neighboring organs. A recent study look at the long-term effects of treating pediatric cancers with radiation and the later-in-life outcomes and found some very disturbing news.

The first year of college can be stressful and disorienting, especially for shy students. But Madelynn Shell (UVA Wise) says shy freshmen who have at least one good friend report more life satisfaction and better emotional wellbeing. Plus: While many students on the rural Eastern Shore of Virginia can’t wait to get out, one of their teachers couldn’t wait to come back. Christina Duffman (Eastern Shore Community College) grew up in poverty and now shares her inspiring life story with students who feel hopeless there. Later in the show: Leslie Whiteman (Virginia State University) and her colleagues created a program called STAR (Successful Transition to the Academic Realm) to help minority students overcome science class challenges and pursue STEM careers. Plus: Many teachers see cell phones in the classroom as a real problem, but Helen Crompton (Old Dominion University) loves bringing handheld technology into student learning. SHR # 2446 :: BEST OF: Hormonal Contraceptive And Multiple Sclerosis Susceptibility PLUS Effects Of HRT On Cerebral Function In Postmenopausal Women At Risk Of Dementia PLUS Genetic Dysbiosis: The Role Of Microbial Insults In Chronic Inflammation - Guest: Dr. Annette Langer-Gould - Dr. Natalie Rasgon - Dr. Luigi Nibali - This show originally aired in April of 2014. Multiple Sclerosis is on the rise in women. Dr. Langer-Gould's group looked at the linkage between hormonal contraceptives and the prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis. PLUS Dr. Rasgon's group looked at brain function, metabolism and cognition in a group of postmenopausal women who are genetically predisposed to dementia. They compared those who are currently on HRT and those who were on and stopped. They also corrected for those using beta-estradiol, beta-estradiol and progesterone combined and compared to those using Conjugated Equine Estrogen as well as synthetic estrogen and progestins. The results was astounding and explains why the Women's Health Initiative study was a complete failure and ultimately hurt a lot of women. PLUS Many of us are aware of the importance of the microbiome in our body. But what if you can't influence it through the introduction of beneficial microbes? What if your genetics predispose you to specific phyla of microbes and not others. And THIS is the real "genetic predisposition" to developing diseases like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cancer and more. Dr. Nibali's group may have discovered that its your genes that allow your body to adopt some microbes while not others.
