We’ve all heard the term “epigenetics.” But what does it actually mean? #Epigenetics is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. It is somewhat of a catch-all term and does not apply to any one type of change or any one methodology for measuring these changes.

How can you prevent disease and extend your healthspan? Dr. Tom Stubbs of Chronomics shares how you can achieve this through epigenetics. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.   Topics Discussed in this Episode: What is epigenetics Why people are becoming interested in epigenetics What they do at Chronomics How your environment and lifestyle affects your DNA The epigenetic indicators How epigenetics fits in with genetic testing The shift towards disease prevention and what the future looks like for Chronomics Whole-genome sequencing vs epigenetic testing   Key Takeaways: Epigenetics is responsible for controlling your DNA. These control mechanisms are influenced by your environment and lifestyle. Epigenetic information is used to provide people with early warning signs for how different components of their environment and lifestyle are impacting their health today and their future likelihood for disease. Chromonics' objective measures of health are influenced by a host of different environment and lifestyle factors that we can measure and provide people with information that they can then take to improve their health moving forward. What we see today around the world, with the rise of aging populations, is there's a massive ballooning of chronic conditions such as type II diabetes and heart disease, and a huge proportion of the risk for those conditions is driven by the environment and lifestyle. With epigenetics, what you can do is provide people with access to an objective measure of health even before the first symptoms and signs of the diseases emerge to enable people to take action to avoid ill health. If you choose to go on a diet and you're choosing to make changes for the long term to reduce your health risk, the epigenetic changes will align to that much more than they will with the fluctuations in yoyo dieting. Your biological age is not a measure of how old you are but how healthy you are. Epigenetics is the gold standard in biological age measurement and essentially provides you with an overall understanding of your age-related disease risk and what you can do globally to improve your health. Health is not just the absence of disease but the complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing of a person.   Action Steps: Personalise your health and wellbeing with epigenetics.   Tom said: "From a Chronomics perspective, the key driver behind the company is to improve health by making what previously people were unable to see at a molecular level to make it visible and actionable."   "One of the really exciting things about epigenetics and epigenetic data is that yes, it's capturing a snapshot in time, but it's capturing the impact that your life choices and your environment [have] had over a prolonged window in your life."   If you're interested in finding out what your health IQ is, take the Health IQ test to find out, and get a free 39-page report built around our six signals, which are sleep, mental health, energy, body composition, digestion, and fitness.   If you've enjoyed what you've heard on this episode and it's added value to you, share the episode with someone you think could benefit from it. Epigenetics is the science of how DNA is controlled and how it's affected by the environment and the lifestyles we choose; sleep hygiene, chronic stress, and diet are just a few examples of lifestyle factors that can directly affect the expression of our genes. This may sound scary at first, but the silver lining is that epigenetics is dynamic, which means that unlike the genetic information that is fixed from birth, epigenetic changes can be identified and changed before causing health problems. This means your epigenetic profile, when understood properly, can be used as an immensely powerful tool in redirecting the course of your genetic fate. Tom Stubbs is the CEO of Chronomics, a company that's not only giving people access to their epigenetic information, but providing them with an analysis of what it all means for their health and future, and connecting them with a team of coaches who will help them to meet their desired goals—or rather, to redirect the course of their genetic fate. Stubbs joins the podcast to discuss exactly how the product works, as well as the science behind epigenetics and various forms of DNA modification. Dr. Tom Stubbs joins the Decoding Superhuman podcast to speak about methylation testing, biological age, and how to use epigenetics for high performance.   Epigenetics is the only measure of biological age that, independent of the tissue or the sample that you take... whether it be saliva, a liver sample, a urine sample, a blood sample, you get age prediction. Now, if you take telomere length, for instance, you only actually get a weak positive correlation with age in blood. Dr. Tom Stubbs   Who is Dr. Tom Stubbs?   Tom obtained a First-Class Honours degree in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from Magdalen College, Oxford. Tom subsequently undertook a PhD in epigenetics at the University of Cambridge, which was broadly on the development and implementation of novel wet-lab and computational methods aimed at improving the understanding of epigenetics (specifically DNA methylation).   Over the last four years, Tom has been working at the forefront of epigenetic research and has authored a number of high impact scientific publications and patented two models. An epigenetics test enables individuals to predict the effects of environmental and lifestyle factors on their biological age. Tom realized that access to information about a person’s epigenetic clock would be incredibly useful from both personal and public health perspectives. Tom co-founded Chronomics, helping individuals to understand how previously unseen factors might have lasting effects on their health ahead of time.   Tom worked alongside Dani and Toby to define the first models, bringing Charles into the team to communicate the science behind Chronomics to the public. The company is unique in its field, providing people with proactive, personalized and consumer-centric health management.   Key Highlights of the Frontier Epigenetics Podcast?   [4:25] What is epigenetics?
