We Didn't Kill Him! in Shoftim by Rabbi Daniel Kalish
We Didn't Start The Fire [It was always burning] We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk You know the song? By Billy Joel. Here's a YouTube link in case you'd like to have a listen –> www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g It's different, isn't it? Both to Joel's other songs and, well, most songs. He wrote it in 1989. In response to a conversation with a young Julian Lennon and a friend. They'd told him how hard they felt it was turning 21 in the late 80s and how he'd have had it easier growing up in the 50s and 60s. According to Wikipedia, the conversation went: “It's a terrible time to be 21!” Joel replied to him “Yeah, I remember when I was 21 – I thought it was an awful time and we had Vietnam, and y'know, drug problems, and civil rights problems and everything seemed to be awful.” The friend replied, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, but it's different for you. You were a kid in the fifties and everybody knows that nothing happened in the fifties”. Joel retorted, “Wait a minute, didn't you hear of the Korean War or the Suez Canal Crisis?” The song is, essentially, a mini history lesson, covering the year Billy Joel was born up to the (then) present day. 117 important people, situations, conflicts and historical events. With the intention of showing that the world has always been full of problems, chaos and challenges. “We didn't start the fire. It was always burning, since the worlds been turning” Something that's worth remembering now, as much as at any point in history. If you read many people's social media, the world has never been worse. “Stop the world, I want to get off” (worth noting as the title of a play from 1961). “World's gone mad”. “Gone to the dogs”. Every generation telling the next that things were better “in my day”. Sure, there are specific challenges at the moment. But there have always been specific challenges. There's never not been. It doesn't mean we dismiss the current challenges, of course. But we can put them in context. Realise that the “fire” will always be “burning”. It's how we respond to it that's key. We can either live our life in the way we want to, in line with our values – despite what's going on in the world. Or we can let those fires derail us. Much love, Jon ‘Piano Man' Hall P.S. Over the remainder of this week I'm going to try and cover some parallels from the events mentioned in this song. Hopefully it will be a 7 day song. Might be 5. Could be 2. I've only got one in mind and the point of writing this. Stick with me
In the mid 80s, Billy Joel penned the lyric “After 1986 what else could be new?” If you were to judge that based on his 1989 hit “We Didn't Start The Fire,” you'd think he meant it. But a closer look at that video and the others from the Storm Front album suggest otherwise. For this episode we're looking at Eye Of The Storm. Released in 1990, it's a home video collection of the videos from the multi-platinum album Storm Front. While that album contained many songs about personal relationships and Billy's life, the videos focus much more on the world at large at the end of the 1980s. We'll dig deep into the five music videos. And, we'll take a look at a soundcheck and radio broadcast recording from early in the Storm Front tour. There were some fireworks in today's crossword (especially in the top-left and bottom-right corners), with tricky clues like 3D, Strengthen, as an embankment, REVET (!), and 6D, Verdi opera set during the fifth century, ATTILA (!!). Jean labored mightily in this corner, while meanwhile, in the bottom right, Mike was inventing answers out of whole cloth, such as 52A, Metal oxide in dental crowns, ZIRCONIA (not ZINCONIA), and 48A, McCarthyite called out in Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire", ROYCOHN (not MARILYN). A tough Saturday, we give it a 4.5 squares on the JAMCR scale.

…So Much Trouble in the World… It isn't just one of the greatest Bob Marley songs, it's the truth. We live in a wild place during a crazy time. But, it helps to remember that ‘We Didn't Start the Fire'…things have by and large been ‘burning since the world's been turning.' Only now, we have the added benefit of social media, a decentralized media landscape, echo chambers, clickbait, hardcore polarization, the 8-second attention span, Q, Wokeism, endless conflicts abound (especially in the Middle East) and it just seems like the thing's starting to spin out of control – so much so that it's kind of hard to make sense of it all. This week's guest, Seth Frantzman, gets up each and every day and tries to do just that – to make sense of the chaos and explain it to the world with proper context, nuance, and care – all with the perfect modicum of outrage, sensibility, and perspective. Seth J. Frantzman is a Middle East affairs analyst based in Jerusalem. He is the author of After ISIS: America, Israel and the Struggle for the Middle East and 'Drone Wars: Pioneers, Artificial Intelligence, Killing Machines and the Battle for the Future, and executive director of the Middle East Center for Reporting and Analysis. He runs the Israel Gulf Report, which follows developments between Israel and the Gulf countries, and has reported extensively from and conducted research in Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Israel, and the UAE. A former lecturer at Al-Quds University on US foreign policy, he has a Ph.D. from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he writes on Middle East Affairs for The Jerusalem Post and contributes to Defense News and other publications and media. Our time with Seth on the show was just as interesting and thought-provoking as his articles. Together, we jumped right into some amazing topics such as modern warfare (Seth's newest book, Drone Wars: Pioneers, Killing Machines, Artificial Intelligence, and the Battle for the Future comes out next week!), contextualizing Israel's predicament in Gaza, the prevalence of atrocities and Western European resistance to the Nazis, western thought supremacy, the arrogance of some western approaches to Israel and the Palestinians and positive attributes of western culture such as human rights, freedom, and democracy, the cause celebre of turning Israel into a pariah state, progressive politics and false narratives of Israel as a white supremacist, settler-colonialist enterprise, the media's deliberate omission of Hamas from its coverage of the conflict, the peace industry = war industry, the frequent disingenuity of the Israeli right's approach to Palestinian national aspirations, Mansour Abbas and Raam, whetherIsrael's adversaries (Iran & Turkey) will test the new Israeli government, and much much more. The end is near! It’s eschatology and R.E.M. in part one of this two-part almost-the-end-of-the-season mega-episode. After discussing some of the greatest apocalyptic tunes in the history of rock and roll, your intrepid cohosts settle on a 1987 hit from R.E.M., “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine).” Along the way, Garrick tries to convince everyone that “The Final Countdown” by Europe is a song about the end of time, but of course it isn’t and Garrick probably already knows that. Timothy reminisces about the films that terrorized him in his fundamentalist childhood before defining “eschatology” and discussing different views of the end of time. What Garrick and Timothy discover as they take a look at the end of time is that, in the late modern era, eschatologies shifted from looking forward to looking inward. In many contexts, the result has been a failure to talk about the end of time at all. And yet, an avoidance of this topic is no less harmful than an over-emphasis on it. The episode ends with a cliffhanger as the dynamic duo begins to list four essential truths about the end of time but then stops after the first one. To discover the rest of these essential truths, be sure to listen to part two of this episode. This episode’s Toybox Hero Tournament is the most ridiculous encounter yet in a season that has been a veritable fountain of ridiculousness. Garrick puts on a bomber jacket and plays a song on his daughter’s ukulele, hoping to save himself from certain destruction by calming the wrath of an Amazonian superheroine. The superheroine is unimpressed and, now, there is one less ukulele in the world. Also, “Ukulele Wonder Women” would be the perfect name for an all-girl acoustic punk band. The new cover art for this season was created by Dani Wallace (daniwallace.myportfolio.com). In Today's Episode Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, and Christian History Made Easy. Follow Dr. Jones at @DrTimothyPJones. Today we have a special treat for you - we got Henry from FireStarters to read Grace Metalious' Peyton Place with us and let me tell you... it's a real Peyton Place in there. I honestly can't even describe the plot of this book so let me just give you the trigger warnings, I guess? So this book is trying really hard to shock you, which shouldn't shock you - the stuff that isn't intentional in it, therefore, is... more shocking? So on that front look out for rampant 1950's racism that thinks it's progressive including whoa n-word count and awful depictions of mental illness, including a character who dies by suicide. The stuff you're here for, though - the Peyton Place stuff - includes but probably is not limited to because my god: incestuous rape and abuse, secret illegal abortion(s), an industrial carnival accident, a cat strangled in absolutely bizarre circumstances (I mean seriously usually I'm the one freaked out by animal cruelty but the dead cat barely registers it's like that), suicide by hanging, a hard ravishing, and oh yeah a murder. FireStarters is a podcast dedicated to discussing all the cultural references in Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire", and therefore they already did an episode on Peyton Place - but they only watched the movie! Henry had no idea what he was in for.

On this week’s episode of Grease the Wheels, we talk about the bus! The bus we are referring to in this case is the metaphysical bus of the blame game, often between irate customers and uncaring management. We’ve all been hit with it in our careers as mechanics or just people who fix things for a living, and more often than not it is undeserved. When auto repairs do not go as planned or customers have nefarious motives, the first person in the crosshairs to blame is always going to be the mechanic. After being a mechanic for some time, you will be able to see them coming and be able to better sidestep the incoming blame for recurring issues by better documenting your repairs and making sure to thoroughly diagnose the issue. Folks, there’s really no two ways about it: when customers car’s don't work the way they are supposed to, they go looking for someone to blame when in most cases they can accomplish this by looking in a mirror. “I didn’t hit anything!” “Yea, I just got a new ______ it can't be that!” These simple statements are often rendered completely null by the bent rims and split water pump impellers that we then see. Additionally, we go over some of the key words and phrases to look out for when looking for a used BMW. This is a jam packed episode, let us know what you think with a review over on iTunes! Also Uncle Jimmy does his own version of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” except with stuff that is his fault culminating in the incredibly awesome destruction of a Volkswagen Beetle. This episode is distributed by The Wrenching Network. Whether you're a technician, a mechanic, or someone who just loves the car scene, The Wrenching Network is a place that you have to check out. They have all sorts of great content, gear, and snacks to keep you turning wrenches in whatever capacity you do it. Also if you see us over there, make sure you say hi and leave a comment with what you think about the episode!
You know, you grow a little closer to an artist when you have something in common. That happened for me with Justin Moore when I found out his favorite line in his new song "We Didn't Have Much" is my favorite line too.

Hello and welcome to the 41st episode of Diversity Hire. Today we talked to Joshua Hunt, a globe-trotting freelance reporter, who originally hails from Petersburg, Alaska. We talked about Josh’s winding path to journalism, the consequences of the personal essay economy, writing from an Indigenous perspective, how and why first-person experience can affect reporting, ageism, hype beasts and sneakerheads, why you shouldn’t wear Nike, and a lot more. This was a really fun conversation and a bit different from our previous ones, so hope you stick around to the end. On this time we have a screaming shadow. Yep, you read that right, and it is terrifying. Also, we have a brand new Johnny Is It True and a tale that is a real mind-bender titled An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension. We end the show with a listener request from Alex Greer that is one of my favorite short stories. It is tiled We Didn’t Do anything Wrong, Hardly. So press that play button and let’s get started. Featured Story - An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension Our featured story for this week is a real mind-bender. It is not so much the story itself, but how it is told. It comes from Weird Tales Magazine, October of 1923. The story is titled An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension and just might be the most sophisticated science fiction story we have ever had. Stories Include: Pattern Of Guilt, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Night Screams, Johnny Is It True - Strange But True, An Adventure In The Fourth Dimension, and We didn’t Do anything Wrong, Hardly.
