70: Antioxidants to Consider for Horses with Poor Eye Health

Healing Horses with Elisha

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2025 22:16

This week, we continue where we left off last week, exploring equine eye conditions through a holistic lens.A holistic approach focuses primarily on optimizing the diet and lifestyle of horses, providing everything they need to support their overall health and maintain healthy eyes.Long-Term Health Issues Often Begin with DeficienciesChronic deficiencies, prolonged stress, and toxin exposure are often the root causes of long-term health issues in horses. Those problems develop slowly, sometimes taking years to show symptoms. Even though genetics may be an underlying factor, nutrition is crucial in determining health outcomes.Protecting the Eyes of Prey AnimalsEyesight is critical for horses to feel safe. Vision loss increases their anxiety and vulnerability. Keeping blind or visually impaired horses calm, secure, and well-supported within a herd can help to reduce their stress and improve their quality of life.Antioxidants Play a Crucial Role in PreventionAntioxidants help reduce oxidative stress, support immune function and detox systems, and protect the sensitive eye tissues. Even without eye symptoms, improved nutrition supports clearer and healthier eyes. A targeted supplement plan should always match the specific needs of each horse.Selenium: An Underrated PowerhouseSelenium deficiency is common in horses, affecting their coat, muscles, metabolism, and more. Selenium indirectly supports the eyes by boosting antioxidant defenses, especially when paired with vitamin E. While it is not an eye-specific nutrient, selenium does contribute to overall equine resilience.Vitamin E is Essential and Often DeficientVitamin E is often lacking in hay-fed horses. Vitamin E protects the tissues from oxidative damage and plays a key role in eye health and detox support. High doses may be required to correct deficiencies in horses, especially for performance or aging horses. The Right Dosage and Timing MatterToo many antioxidants at once can overwhelm the body. Start with one or two at low doses and monitor progress over several weeks. Horses with autoimmune issues, like uveitis, need especially careful and gradual supplementation.Zinc: The Surprise Ally for Eye HealthZinc supports metabolism, thyroid function, liver health, and immunity. It also helps with weepy eyes and visual clarity, likely due to its high concentration in ocular tissue and role in processing light. Zinc works well with vitamin A to support vision.Be Cautious and Responsive with ZincNot all horses need zinc. Try using low doses of about 150 mg elemental zinc in an organic form and observe. If there is no visible improvement within 6–8 weeks, zinc might not be the right solution. Beta Carotene: A Natural Source of Eye SupportBeta carotene, found in fresh forage and colorful foods like carrots, supports vision and immune health. It converts to vitamin A, which helps with light processing. Forage-based diets naturally provide more beta carotene than hay.Support Through Food Whenever PossibleWhole foods and high-quality forage offer the best long-term nutritional support. While supplements are valuable, a varied, nutrient-dense diet reduces dependence on pills and powders and supports holistic, sustainable health.Links and resources:Connect with Elisha Edwards on her website Join my email list to be notified about new podcast releases and upcoming webinars.Free Webinar Masterclass:

Was Anti-Aging-Cremes gegen Falten ausrichten können

Ratgeber

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2025 5:06

(1:00) However, this year he decided to focus more on strength training. It doesn't mean he's slacking on cardio. He's prepping for another climb up Mt. Whitney in the upcoming months. They discuss “periodization" training. Vinnie switches to a recent consultation he had with a couple. (16:00) He realizes he needs to discuss the subject of vitamins more frequently. Full disclosure: Vinnie owns  Pure Vitamin Club. (20:00) Today's lifestyles and stressors deplete the body of vitamins, so it's good to supplement where possible. (20:20) Vitamin B-12 is essential and involved in developing red blood cells, brain health, and DNA. There are different forms of B-12 vitamins: methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Stay away from cyanocobalamin. It is a synthetic form and contains a cyanide molecule. Vitamin C is absorbed better when hooked to a fat molecule (meaning liposomal). (28:00) The reason Vinnie created a vitamin company is to help people be better. (28:30) When he was cured of cancer in 2007, he analyzed everything in his lifestyle, including the vitamins he was taking. He realized that even the high-end vitamins he had been using had crap ingredients. (31:00) Vitamin E is great to take, but take one made with tocotrienol, a better form of vitamin E. (40:15) Vitamins often work better when they are blended with the proper molecules. For example, Vitamin D3 is absorbed better when attached to Vitamin K. Two recent studies show that vitamin D can be an effective way to slow multiple sclerosis. (44:45) A specific strain of spirulina is apparently a usable form of B-12 for vegans. (47:45) Pure Vitamin Club's B-12 is sublingual, so you let it dissolve under your tongue. Follow Vinnie on X @vinnietortorich. He has been increasing content, including videos. Nutrient Requirements of Pre-Weaning Calves with Dr. Jim Drackley, Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Dr. Rick Lundquist, Nutrition Professionals Inc.; Dr. Tom Overton, Cornell University

Dr. Drackley begins with an overview of his presentation at the 2025 Florida Ruminant Nutrition Symposium, focusing on the NASEM requirements for pre-weaned calves. He mentions some differences in energy and protein requirement calculations compared to the NRC system, as well as increased vitamin E recommendations and a more biologically based factorial approach to calculating mineral requirements. (5:59)Dr. Overton notes that milk replacements can be formulated differently to account for changes in mineral or vitamin requirements. In herds that feed whole milk, is there any reason to think about supplementing those calves? Dr. Drackley suggests that Mother Nature may have been smarter than us all along, as the composition of whole milk matches very well with the nutrient requirements of calves. (9:43)Dr. Lundquist asked what the impetus was for the increase in vitamin E requirements. Dr. Drackley refers to a series of studies examining the role of vitamin E in immune function that have shown the previous requirements were too low to achieve optimum health outcomes. Many dairies give a vitamin injection after birth to help boost young calves. (11:45)The panel discusses improved colostrum feeding efforts and the variation in successful passive immunity that still exists in the industry. (13:51)Scott asks Dr. Overton what gaps he sees in calf nutrition from his Extension specialist perspective, and he suggests that best management for weaning is still a big topic. Dr. Drackley agrees this is an area that needs some attention. He feels the industry is doing better on the baby calf side by feeding more milk, but then that almost makes weaning more difficult because people are not changing their mindset about how to step calves down from milk or what age to wean calves. (16:39)For people feeding more milk than the traditional 1.25 lbs of solids, Dr. Drackley recommends extending weaning time to eight instead of six weeks. He also recommends at least one step down in the amount of milk, which could be a week of feeding just once a day. Calf starter formulation and quality are also critical. Research shows that providing a small amount of forage, preferably grass hay or straw, before weaning is beneficial for buffering and rumination. (18:47)Dr. Overton asks about the research gap in our understanding of transition cow management and how that impacts the calf in utero and after birth. The panel discusses heat stress and season of birth impacts on calf growth and first lactation performance. (26:08)The panel wraps up with their take-home messages. Discussion includes pelleted versus texturized starters, sugars in a starter to promote rumen development, the value of increasing the quality and quantity of calf nutrition, the thermoneutral zone in baby calves, and outsourcing calf raising.  (33:10)Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to invite more people to join us at the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table.  If you want one of our Real Science Exchange t-shirts, screenshot your rating, review, or subscription, and email a picture to anh.marketing@balchem.com. Vitamin E Deficiency in Horses

Send us a textCould your horse be vitamin E deficient without you knowing it? New research suggests this vital nutrient deficiency might be far more common than we realize, even in horses with access to fresh pasture.Drs. Amy Johnson and Megan Palmisano join Veterinary Vertex to discuss their groundbreaking study examining vitamin E concentrations in hospitalized horses. They share a stunning revelation: approximately 17% of adult horses and 5% of foals arrived at their hospital already deficient in vitamin E, despite coming from the nutrient-rich mid-Atlantic region. Most surprising, these deficiencies occurred across different management styles, suggesting this problem transcends typical risk factors. As Dr. Johnson explains, vitamin E deficiency has serious implications, particularly for neurological health. Her work as a neurologist revealed connections between vitamin E deficiency and devastating conditions like equine motor neuron disease, equine neuroaxonal dystrophy, and equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy. The researchers initially hypothesized that hospitalization might worsen vitamin E status by restricting access to green forage, though their findings suggest short hospital stays don't significantly impact levels. The conversation delves into practical aspects every horse owner should know: the importance of testing individual horses rather than assuming herd status, proper handling techniques for blood samples to prevent false readings, and recommendations for seasonal testing schedules. Perhaps most critically, they emphasize that horses at the same farm eating identical diets can have dramatically different vitamin E statuses. For veterinarians and owners alike, this episode offers vital perspective on an often-overlooked aspect of equine nutrition that could prevent serious neurological disease. Understanding your horse's vitamin E status through regular testing and appropriate supplementation when needed provides a simple but potentially life-changing intervention for their long-term health.Listen, share, and leave us a review to help more horse owners discover this essential information about equine vitamin E requirements!Open access JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.24.09.0590INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? Story at-a-glance Vitamin E supports a healthy pregnancy — Vitamin E intake during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of food allergies in newborns by stabilizing immune responses and lowering histamine levels Vitamin E alters histamine production — Researchers found that α-tocopherol, a specific form of vitamin E, prevented severe allergic reactions by reducing the release of histamine, the chemical responsible for swelling, itching and anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) Infants get the benefits of vitamin E immediately — Babies with genetic skin barrier weaknesses, such as those linked to eczema, are more likely to develop food allergies, but vitamin E helps reinforce immune regulation and reduce their risk Vitamin E doesn't interfere with your body's natural processes — Vitamin E supplementation during pregnancy influenced newborn immune responses without suppressing other necessary immune functions, meaning it helps prevent allergies without weakening overall immunity Simple dietary changes have big impact — Eating more pasture-raised eggs, grass fed beef liver, avocados, and wild-caught fish will provide the necessary levels of vitamin E to support immune balance in both mother and baby

In this episode, I dive deep into the critical role of vitamin E in cellular membrane repair and mineral balance—a connection our ancestors understood intuitively through seasonal eating patterns.Discover how modern processed oils and year-round food availability have disconnected us from the complete vitamin E complex our bodies need for proper cellular function. As we transition into spring, I share my personal approach to adjusting supplements and foods based on HTMA results, a cornerstone of my rewilded wellness philosophy.Learn why low tissue sodium and potassium levels on HTMA tests reveal cellular energy failure and membrane damage—and why it can take up to two years to truly repair these systems by eliminating damaged fats and restoring proper nutrient intake. This episode explores:• The relationship between damaged cell membranes and mineral imbalance• How vitamin E complex protects cellular integrity beyond simple antioxidant effects• The critical connection between fat quality and your body's ability to maintain mineral balance• Seasonal strategies for incorporating complete vitamin E foods this spring• Why ancestral eating patterns naturally supported cellular repair cyclesI break down the often-overlooked connection between seasonal eating and cellular health, offering practical guidance for incorporating these principles into your own healing journey—whether you're just beginning or already on the path.Remember, true healing requires slowing down and creating space for restoration.
