Can you name the health and wellness retailer that generates between four to five times more revenue selling categorical products online than the combined efforts of GNC and The Vitamin Shoppe? And here's a hint for you…it's not Amazon! Since the bulk of my audience is located within the United States, I'm going to assume that iHerb probably wasn't the first health and wellness online retailer that popped into your head. So, despite its massive multibillion-dollar success…iHerb isn't widely known in the U.S. market, mostly because the vast majority of its commercial activity happens internationally. But before blooming into a global powerhouse, iHerb began almost three decades ago as a Yahoo store selling St. John's Wort supplements online. And after the founder forgot to disable the international orders feature when the website launched, iHerb started getting orders from countries like South Korea. But rather than turning off the feature, iHerb decided to start fulfilling them. As sales started to grow, iHerb opened its first fulfillment center in 2002…marking the beginning of a strategic expansion that will soon include nine state-of-the-art logistics operations across the United States, Asia, and the Middle East. And because of its relentless focus on revolutionizing logistics solutions, iHerb can serve the health and wellness needs of customers located in 180 countries…maintaining an average global shipping time of less than five days and offering free shipping in 80 countries. Moreover, iHerb strives to create a localized shopping experience by translating its shopping platform into 22 languages and accepting more than 80 different currencies. Furthermore, iHerb has expanded its online marketplaces presence…reaching more consumers worldwide through 25 digital stores on platforms like Amazon, Tmall, Rakuten, and Coupang. But after a 22-year long journey, from selling a single supplement product to becoming a global leader in the health and wellness industry…iHerb surpassed $1 billion in annual sales. And while that was an enormous accomplishment, it only took iHerb six more years to reach $2 billion in annual sales. In fact, iHerb exceeded $2.4 billion in net sales last year…reflecting a YoY growth of 14.5%. And then for the final portion of my latest first principles thinking content, I'll briefly share my professional experience with iHerb, but more importantly provide a helpful geographical expansion strategic framework (that includes how to best leverage iHerb) for all my brand operators within the intersecting CPG categories of functional foods, functional beverages, and nutritional supplements.

Dr. Paul expands on the impact of diet, supplements, and exercise tailored to genetic makeup, citing his holistic approach versus extreme gene-editing biohacking. The conversation touches on vitamin D's role in health, the misconception about sun exposure, and the relationship between genetics and skin health. Nutrigenomics is explored, illustrating how genetic testing can influence dietary and lifestyle choices, while also covering genetic predispositions related to mood, sodium, and sugar sensitivity. Let's be real, most supplements are just expensive hype. The fitness industry is a billion-dollar machine built on flashy marketing, half-truths, and straight-up BS claims. So how do you know what actually works and what's just draining your wallet? In today's episode, I'm breaking it all down, the supplements that are a complete waste of money, the only two I actually stand by, and how to stop falling for influencer hype. Spoiler: fat burners won't burn fat, BCAAs are useless if you eat enough protein, and detox teas? They're just overpriced laxatives. Instead of throwing your money at gimmicks, I'll tell you exactly where to invest for real results. We'll talk about why protein powder and creatine are the only two supplements that actually move the needle when it comes to muscle growth, recovery, and performance. Plus, how to figure out if you actually need a supplement in the first place, or if it's just another marketing ploy. And before you buy anything, there's one key question you need to ask yourself (trust me, it'll save you a ton of money). If you're tired of supplement confusion and want to simplify your approach while still getting the best results possible, this episode is for you.I Also Discuss:(00:00) The Truth About Supplements: What Works & What's a Waste(07:32) Fat Burners, BCAAs & Detox Teas: Why They're a Scam(13:50) Protein Powder & Creatine: The Only Two That Matter(27:09) Do You Actually Need That Supplement?Find more from Tara: Website: https://www.taralaferrara.com/Instagram: @taralaferrara @thetaratalk @broads.appYoutube: Tara LaFerrara Thank you to our sponsors:Broads: Visit Broads.app and enter code PODCAST for 20% off your first month.Cronometer: Visit cronometer.com for 15% off the Premium subscription.

To protect public health, the FDA's Pesticide Residue Monitoring Program tests FDA-regulated foods shipped in interstate commerce to determine whether they comply with pesticide tolerances, or maximum residue levels, set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If the FDA finds that the amount of pesticide residue on a food is over the tolerance, or when a pesticide is found and there is no tolerance established, the FDA can take action. Sara McGrath, PhD, is a chemist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Human Foods Program. She is in the Office of Food Chemical Safety, Dietary Supplements, and Innovation where she focuses on monitoring chemical contaminants in foods broadly, with a focus on pesticides. Longevity has become a cultural phenomenon…and that should be making functional CPG entrepreneurs salivate more than all those customers providing samples for DNA test kits. Did you know that more than half of Americans say it's their goal to live to 100? But becoming a centenarian wasn't always a goal sought by most Americans…partly because of what I've dubbed the “Mrs. Fletcher Effect.” You might be too young to remember these famous early-90s "I've fallen and I can't get up" TV commercials, but the frailty of Mrs. Fletcher certainly didn't help public perception of aging populations. Alternatively, when you see “Mrs. Fletcher” typecast in today's connected TV digital ads…she would be shown playing chess, running a marathon, starting a new business, or traveling extensively with family. But it's that simple (but massive) paradigm shift, around the image of growing older, which created many second-order effects. Because even if almost everyone accepts that “Father Time” will remain undefeated, more people are realizing they can have some control over the pace and trajectory of functional decline. This behavioral change arguably gained importance in the last decade, as more individuals began viewing themselves as consumers in the healthcare market compared to solely being patients. Because of that, consumer healthcare has begun evolving from a reactive, one-size-fits-all approach to a distinctively proactive, personalized, and integrative approach. But as you'd imagine…that marketplace evolution has created immense opportunities, with American consumers spending billions annually seeking to improve their “health span,” a popular term defined the period of your life that's spent healthy, rather than simply how long you will physically be alive. A key aspect of this massive opportunity centers around the fact that Millennials and Baby Boomers have increasingly mirrored one another in adopting healthy lifestyle habits. And while it doesn't happen often, duality can be an extremely powerful force when considering the potential impact of a CPG industry trend. But with consumers of all ages (not just the older ones) looking for ways to extend the number of years they spend free from chronic disease…as well as the physical, cognitive, and emotional decline that can accompany aging, its certainly great news for CPG brands positioned within the emerging and intersecting categories of functional foods, functional beverages, and dietary supplements. And to help entrepreneurs in that pursuit of discovering attractive commercial opportunities, my latest first principles thinking content will cover the top need states (and key functional ingredient trends) within longevity and healthy aging, which includes cognitive health, mobility, muscle health (and strength), cellular health, and better appearance. Finally, I'll quickly run through an often-overlooked consumer insight and marketing strategy that's key to unlocking the booming business of longevity. He gives an overview of the technology behind DNA testing for specific products, the role of HPTLC testing, commonly adulterated ingredients and the importance of challenging the healthcare and health science industries.
