The Christians Hour on Oneplace.com

Through-out the month of September our messages have centered on how, in all of our lives sometimes, life's struggles are very real! Our speaker this week follows up on that series with a reminder that dealing with life's struggles for the long term, requires living a life that does not follow the norm. Today's speaker, now retired, Tim Harlow, was the lead minister of Parkview Christian Church, located in the Chicago, IL area. In today's message Tim challenges the concept of 'normalcy,' using his own unique style of humor and personal examples to illustrate how societal norms might not lead to long-term fulfillment. In fact, Tim implores us to be "Abby-Normal" by prioritizing values over immediate desires. So, not sure how the term Abby-Normal plays out? Here's Tim with the low down on how Abby-Normal, the narrow road, and the Bible's account of the lives of brothers, Jacob and Esau, can help us live for the long haul To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/326/29

There's a phrase from the back of a book that is worth noting. It says, “How we hold and carry our memories – good and bad – is a part of what forms us spiritually.” Memory is universal, we all have memories that form us, shape us and influence us and often in ways that we don't even notice. But what happens when we turn our attention and intention at our memories? What happens when we turn remembering into a spiritual practice? In today's episode Doable Discipleship host and Saddleback Church pastor Jason Wieland is joined by Casey Tygrett, theologian in residence at Parkview Christian Church in Illinois, spiritual director at SoulCare, host of the Restlessness Is a Gift podcast, and author of The Practice of Remembering – the book where the quote from earlier is from. Casey and Jason talk about how focusing on memory has impacted his ministry, how we see the call to remember so often in Scripture, what a practice of remembering can look like, specifically when thinking about past hurt or grief, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by the Saddleback Spiritual Growth Team. It premiered in 2017 and now offers more than 350 episodes. Episodes release every Tuesday on your favorite podcast app and on the Saddleback Church YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/saddleback). Doable Discipleship is a proud part of the Saddleback Family of Podcasts.
