Dog breeding can be a highly controversial topic. Why bring more puppies into the world when there are still dogs needing homes in shelters? In today's episode, we explore that perception with some thoughtful input from two of our expert guests. A lot goes into the process of becoming a responsible dog breeder: What costs are involved? How do you actually “breed” dogs? What breed should you choose? How do you even get started? We hear from one breeder in Canada who went all the way to Brazil to find exactly what she was looking for to start her line of dogs. And did you know that some dogs require artificial insemination? Do you know how much that COSTS? Once mom is through labor and the so cute pups arrive, the intensive labor for humans is just beginning. Raising them is a hands-on endeavor, and then playing lifelong matchmaker for the little darlings is not as easy as you might thing. Everyone wants a cute puppy, but who will be a great match, and who will give up on your sweet little ball of fluff and send them back to your loving arms? If you're thinking it's all worth it because they make a lot of money, you might be sobered by the financial reality check our guests share. To lighten the mood, we end with a jolly tale of a Christmas birth. Did you know Therapy Dog organizations have Junior Handlers and that their requirements differ from adults? In this 25th episode of Therapy Dog Talk, I sat down with Katelyn to hear about her experience as Junior Handler for Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD). She recently turned 18 so she also let us in on what it takes to transition from Junior Handler to Handler and how that will open up different volunteer opportunities for her and her pup Ace.Katelyn found about Therapy Dogs through her local American Kennel Club (AKC) friends who volunteer with their toy spaniels. She recognized that Ace would enjoy therapy work and began training him. After two year of volunteering, Katelyn has quite a bit to share about their experiences as a Therapy Dog team and what she and Ace enjoy the most.In 2020, Katelyn also took on breeding beginning with a litter of Skye Terriers. Her experiences with Therapy Dog work have impacted how she raises her puppies and led to the development of what she calls "Puppy Culture".If you're ready to get to hear about Katelyn and Ace's journey as a Junior Handler Therapy Dog team, let's dive in:In this episode, we discuss …What it's like to be a Junior Handler and how Katelyn's opportunities will change when she can volunteer on her own.Ace's extreme love of people and how that has impacted the way that she raises her new puppies.Katelyn's history of competing with Ace and how it connects to her work as a Therapy Dog team and breeder.Give it a listen and let me know which part you found the most helpful, then follow their journey at @skyward_farms.•Interested in getting started as a Therapy Dog but don't know where to begin? In this episode of K9 Conservationists, Kayla talks to Laura Holder of Conservation Dogs Collective. They chat all about puppies! Episode suggestion: Stay curious by being more “dog”! For 90 seconds a day, find joy in little things and slow down! Call to action: Update your Amazon Smile to benefit K9 Conservationists. What are the pros and cons of getting a conservation dog as a puppy? Pros: Having a dog from a puppy gives you more control over their learning and getting them started on detection-related development early Cons: It is a huge time and monetary investment. There is also no guarantee they will end up working as a conversation dog. What are you looking for when looking for a breeder? It is a good idea to interview breeders Look for physical health, how the dogs are kept, titles, bred for related work (service work, police dogs, hunting, etc.) How to pick a puppy from a litter? If the breeder doesn't pick for you, it would be best to see some video of the litters, see if the breeder knows about Puppy Culture, etc. You can do an obstacle course, puzzles, etc. If your breeder is selecting, ensure they know what they are looking for. Be cautious about shelter puppies, as there are so many perks to working with a reputable breeder What are some games would you play with puppies to get them started on the conservation detection line of work? Basic puppy socialization is important! Sprinkle in a little bit of nosework such as food scatters and snuffle mats! Keep things easy to start, they are just puppies! What about games for a pre-teen puppy? They have a higher attention span, so you can increase the difficulty of your nose games Barrier challenges are good to start at this age What games can we play with teenage detection dogs? They are still young, so it's important to know they will still have “difficult” days You can increase the difficulty even more and introduce physical aspects to the challenges How do you manage your goals and expectations for your puppy? Your puppy will never be perfect, neither will you. Mistakes will happen and that's okay! Working with a professional will help set you up for success Be your puppy's advocate Be humble, don't wear rose coloured glasses “Everything is a phase; whether it's good, whether it's bad, whether you're thrilled with what you're seeing or devastated.” Know when to really dig into something or when to just let them ride it out It is absolutely okay if raising a puppy is not your thing. Patreon Question: How can I be productive in developing a conservation or good scent detection puppy while dealing with puppy brain and waiting for maturity to hit? Are there certain signs that you can see early on a potential conservation prospect puppy? Try as best as possible to expose and positively influence the puppies experience out in the world. You've got time! Signs to look for are dogs that are motivated to engage with the environment with and without human-induced reinforcers
Today we're talking about one of our favorite topics: puppies! Elissa recently had a litter of rat terrier puppies, and now that they've headed home, we're reflecting on the process and experience that she had. As a first time breeder, Elissa isn't an expert breeder - but she can certainly share what her experience was like. We discussed many topics, resources, and just for fun items, so check out these resources below: Some inspiration for producing a healthy of puppies came in part from the Functional Dog Collaborative: Supporting the ethical breeding of healthy, behaviorally sound dogs. Health testing information: The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) was founded as a private, not-for-profit foundation in 1966 by John M. Olin, a well-known inventor, industrialist, philanthropist, conservationist, and sportsman. OFA maintains a database for a variety of health testing of dogs and Tilly had her hips, elbows, patella's, eyes and heart tested and logged through OFA before she was bred. Our cover photo was provided by Nina Sage Photography! Her skills in puppy photography were so appreciated by Elissa and her new puppy owners. There are many resources for good breeding information, including Avidog and Puppy Culture. We highly recommend utilizing these resources if you're thinking about your own litter. Elissa utilized the help of Dr. Lopate at Reproductive Revolutions in Wilsonville, Oregon. We hope you enjoy this episode. Give it a listen and if you like it, please be sure to rate, review, subscribe and share with your friends!

These puppies were bred by Hope Service Dogs, Inc. Many will go on to become service dogs to help people with disabilities. The parents (Seth & Lucy) are both fully health tested. These puppies will be raised in NePoPo®, along with Puppy Culture, Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction. At 49 days, they will be temperament tested so they are matched with the right person/family. To find out more, or make a donation, check out HopeServiceDogs.org.
While there are many innate temperament traits (nature), we can't discount how a puppy is raised (nurture). 3/4 of the puppy raising job belongs to the breeder and 1/4 of this job belongs to us, the puppy owners. The first 12 weeks of a puppy's life make a lasting impact. It is the critical socialization period that can support a dog toward being a well adjusted and resilient doggy citizen or lead them to be fearful or a bully of a dog. Because it's a team effort, choosing a responsible breeder is crucial and at least as important as understanding what to do once puppy comes home. Our guest, Jane Killion, is a breeder of bull terriers and creator of Puppy Culture: an educational film and program on exactly how to raise puppies during their first 12 weeks. In today's episode you will learn: Why early socialization is so important. What kind of experiences a young puppy need to do well in the world. How many positive contacts with a new experience is necessary for a puppy to form a lifetime of positive association. What to do if a puppy accidentally has a bad experience so you can change their formed association. Why it's important to skip any kind of exposure that you're not confident will go well. Why play dates with one other safe dog are better than big play groups. Why you should be cautious about big puppy playdates. Jane's perspective on the best age for breeders to send puppies home. All about "manding" -- the concept of teaching puppies how to politely ask for what they want and why it's important. The importance of giving your dog a voice early on. And more! Special Guest: Jane Killion.
In this week's episode, we get to talk to Jane Messineo Lindquist about Puppy Culture. We discuss why she created Puppy Culture, why it is beneficial, and how to work through some common puppy issues. Enjoy!
Jane Killion is a woman with many titles: author, breeder, fancier, trainer, educator and advocate for working with and teaching humans and their dogs on a variety of levels. We talk about her initiative “Puppy Culture” and what drives her to continue creating programs for breeders and anyone interested in or working with puppies. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dogknowledge/support
