Meet Anamarie Johnson! She was one of my first hires at School For The Dogs nearly a decade ago. She recently got her PhD, and she'd coming on to join me as a co-host! Me= Annie Grossman, dog trainer, business owner, human. I started this podcast in 2018. I had to take a little time off, mostly because... I was working on a book! It comes out next week! Learn more at SchoolForTheDogs.com/book. It's called How To Train Your Dog With Love + Science and much of it stems from conversations that started on this podcast. In this episode, we talked about some of the crazy drama that's been going on, most of it having to do with positive-reinforcement pros and those trainers are positive-reinforcement adjacent going at each other online. Characters include Michael Shikashio, Zak George, Ivan Balabanov, Behavior Vets, Eileen Anderson, and Jo-Rosie Haffenden, among others. Anamarie and I come to the conclusion that a lot of the pros don't know how to interpret science, and are basically just talking to each other since the majority of dog owners have no idea that dog training has anything to do with science to begin with. I recently renamed the podcast to match the book's title: How To Train Your Dog With Love + Science. I think it is fitting for the new format because Anamarie can be the science and I can be... the love? Or something. Along with the new title came an amazing new theme song, by Sam Swinnerton, who recently KILLED IT on The Tonight Show! See here. Also: I'm hosting a mini-conference on Sept. 7 at School For The Dogs in NYC (and also online). Registration closes Sept. 4. Learn more at ShoolForTheDogs.com/event. See you next week! x Annie

Training Without Conflict® Podcast Episode Fourteen: Michael ShikashioRecently, Ivan invited Michael Shikashio to the TWC podcast. Michael and Ivan may hold at times different opinions on dog training. However, they had a great, respectful conversation that explored these views and ideas. Is it possible to bring the dog training communities together, rather than increase the polarization? Both Ivan and Michael recognize that there are those on the far extremes of the dog training spectrum who are immovable in their ideologies, but they also are certain that there are the trainers in the middle who have the most to gain from such conversations. We hope that this podcast will encourage dog trainers on both sides to continue to talk with each other. Sharing knowledge and experience is how we advance – not by looking down on each other, and certainly not through legislations or bans. Here are some links to videos discussed in the podcast:https://youtu.be/9B-gt0aEtYwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki74sxKfXYMMichael Shikashio, CDBC, is the founder of AggressiveDog.com and focuses on teaching other professionals from around the world on how to successfully work aggression cases. If you're on social media, or just have an interest in dog training and behavior in general, you might have seen the controversy surrounding a research article that was published around the end of April, so just a couple months before the release of this podcast episode. The paper is titled "Ancestry Inclusive Dog Genomics Challenges Popular Breed Stereotypes". It's a bit of a mouthful, but the short summary of controversy is that many in the mainstream media or on social media were saying that "breed totally matters, while others were staying, see, breed doesn't matter at all." So the first thing that came to my mind was, let's get one of the authors of the paper onto the podcast. And the next thing that came to my mind was, let's get Kim Brophey to be my guest host on this episode, as she is someone that has talked so much about breed and behavior tendencies in her past appearances as a guest on this show. And so I brought Jessica Hekman, who is one of the authors and Kim Brophey together, and and let's just say, these two brilliant minds do not disappoint in this episode, as we take a deep dive into not only dispelling some of the misunderstandings from the research, but also into genetics and aggression in general.  For additional resources on helping dogs with aggression, visit:https://aggressivedog.comIf you want to take your knowledge and skills for helping dogs with aggression to the next level, check out the Aggression in Dogs Master Course and get a FREE preview here:https://aggressivedog.thinkific.com/courses/aggression-in-dogsDon't miss out on the third annual Aggression in Dogs Conference  9/30-10/2/22:https://aggressivedog.com/conference/About Jessica:Jessica Hekman, DVM, PhD, is a behavioral geneticist. The other day, a member of the Pooch Parenting Society sent me a Facebook post from a dog rescue organization about neurodivergent families and asked for my opinion. She has two special needs kids and had some pretty big feelings about it...and wanted to see if I felt the same. I do.The Facebook post that was shared with me was written by the founder of a dog rescue organization and explained the reason behind her policy not to adopt dogs to families who have autistic children. Yes. you heard me right. She has labeled a group of people as a red flag and considers neurodivergent families inappropriate to live with dogs. (I can only imagine what Temple Grandin would have to say about this...)Dog Rescue OrganizationsBefore anyone gets too heated, I want to remind everyone that the majority of people who go into the animal welfare field LOVE animals and want what's best for them. I worked at our local animal shelter as a volunteer for many years and was even on staff in the behavior department for awhile. I see the heart that goes into the work at shelters. But loving dogs is not an excuse for bigotry. This podcast episode (and article) are intended to offer support and ideas so that neurodivergent families can be successful with dogs.Family Frustrations in Dog AdoptionAs a dog and child specialist, I work with lots of families who have tried and failed to adopt dogs because of their rules not to adopt to families with children under the age of 10. While I may not agree with that policy, it's a clear policy. It's a result of a lack of resources to vet parenting and management skills. In my line of work, I see dogs who are uncomfortable living with children WAY more often than children who mistreat dogs. Children are unpredictable and can cause dogs lots of stress, which if not prevented can lead to inappropriate interactions.High Stakes Between Kids and DogsChildren are vulnerable and can be harmed easily by an excited dog, even just in play. And even the tiniest of bites could cause tremendous damage to a youngster. In previous episodes of this podcast, I have shared stories of babies who were killed by the family dog. And in the Master Course in Aggression course that I took from Michael Shikashio, he shared a story of a dog who nipped a child who ultimately died because the dog happened to nick an artery with its tooth. This was a horrible tragedy, but was an accident. The average pet family does not have a lot of experience truly understanding dog behavior and how they use their bodies to communicate. As a result, it can be difficult to keep everyone safe. The stakes with kids and dogs are high, which is why it's a field I chose to focus on. Parents need specialized support and resources, which can easily be included in the adoption process with any rescue, shelter or even breeder.Continue reading on www.poochparenting.net/episode52

The Family Pupz Podcast

Today's Topic: The process of getting and raising a new dog seems pretty straightforward, right?  You look for and choose the dog with that "special something", you take him/her home, and if your dog has any behavioral issues, you'll look for resources to help your dog adjust their behavior to live safely and happily in your world, right?  But what if I told you that too often we're choosing our dogs in a way that's akin to choosing our partners purely based on the fact that they have a nice smile.  The fact is, the type of breed your dog is has a SIGNIFICANT effect not only on his/her innate instincts, behaviors and tendencies, but perhaps more importantly, on whether he/she will be compatible (or incompatible) with your personality and lifestyle. That's why we've invited applied ethologist, dog trainer, the owner of The Dog Door Behavior Center, and the author of the book, Meet Your Dog: The Game-Changing Guide to Understanding Your Dog's Behavior, Kim Brophy, to the pod, to discuss the optimal dog breeds for various different human personalities and lifestyles, why she believes that "dog training" is a misnomer, how her understanding of human-dog compatibility affected how she views human relationships, and much much more.Guest Bio: Kim Brophey, CDBC, CPDT-KA, FDM, is an applied ethologist and owner of The Dog Door Behavior Center in Asheville, NC. Kim's commitment to Family Dog Mediation® has been recognized internationally, awarded the APDT Outstanding Trainer of the Year in 2009 and the Best Dog Trainer of WNC seven years in a row. She is a member of the International Society for Applied Ethology and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and a certified member and past board member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. Kim Brophey's Dog L.E.G.S.® model of comprehensive canine science has been endorsed by prominent canine scientists such as Raymond Coppinger and embraced by reputable dog trainers worldwide. Her groundbreaking book, Meet Your Dog: The Game-Changing Guide to Understanding Your Dog's Behavior, TED talk, and Beyond The Operant (BTO) collaborative have made profound waves and become favorites among both dog professionals and the public. Today's Topic: Having a dog who displays aggressive behaviors, whether it's directed towards other dogs, people, or things in the environment, can be difficult enough to manage and live with when your dog's triggers are known and reliably trigger your dog.  But it can be made more difficult to deal with when the aggression is significantly more random in nature. It can have profound effects, for example, on where you feel you can go, who you feel you can be with, and who you're comfortable leaving your dog with (if ever), for fear that an incident involving your dog will result in physical and/or financial harm.  That's why we invited the world-renowned expert on aggression in dogs, and the founder of AggressiveDog.com, Michael Shikashio, CDBC, to the pod, to discuss the difference between reactivity and aggression, the common signs we miss, how to turn unpredictability into predictability, and whether he thinks that all aggression in dog cases can be addressed using positive training techniques (HINT: YES, YES, YES!)Guest Bio: Michael Shikashio, CDBC, is the founder of AggressiveDog.com and focuses on teaching other professionals from around the world on how to successfully work aggression cases. In the world of dog training, there are some who have opted to do the really hard work – focusing entirely on the dogs that everyone else rejects. For many dogs, these dedicated individuals are the last house on the block. If their work doesn't “take” these are the dogs that end up being euthanized. Going in to this work is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it requires a kind of heart and empathy that goes above and beyond just regular dog education. Enter Michael Shikashio – who came to dog training almost by accident after spending time fostering dogs. Through that volunteer work, he began to see dogs with deep behavioral issues. Dogs that had little chance of finding permanent homes without substantial help. So he decided that he'd do something about it. In this episode Michael talks about his “why” and how a dog named Sarge got him on this path without his even realizing it. What motivates people? Why do they do what they do? What does leadership actually mean in today's world? Good questions, right? That's what Cathy Brooks, thought. Who is the most famous dog in the world?  It may surprise you to know, he isn't even real yet he says words that we, human beings would often like to say.  In today's creature feature I'll share some fun facts about this character that most children know and love, and many adults still fondly remember.   Continuing my conversation with dog aggression expert, Michael Shikashio, CDBC, (aggressivedog.com) we talk about what to do if you are out walking your dog and suddenly one or more dogs becomes aggressive and start attacking your dog – how to ward off the dogs, and stay safe yourself. We also cover why other dogs may join in when only one originally attacked. Does your cat seem to have a preoccupation with open doors – making mad dashes to go through them?  It can be hard to catch the cat if it gets outside or they can run off, become lost and never return. Door dashing can be a real problem for many people. In this episode, I explain some ways to make the door unpleasant so the feline will want to stay away from it.     See the companion blogs for the podcast episodes at www.raisingyourpaws.com.   Additional Resources  Source for the story about Snoopy – “Dog's Best Friend” by Simon Garfield. Do you wonder exactly why cats get hairballs and if there is anything you can do to reduce the amount that form in your cat's stomach and then get thrown up exactly when and where you most don't want them? I'll explain how hairballs are a good thing for your feline, what to do to lessen their existence and the symptoms to watch for that might indicate an excessively large hairball may be causing health problems. There have been two different types of highly upsetting dog biting incidents recently in my town, one involving a child that got bit after asking if she could pet the dog, the other where two dogs broke loose and attacked two separate dogs being walked by their owners. The circumstances of these incidents, convince me we need to keep talking about what we can do to prevent traumatic bites and attacks.  About preventing children from getting bit when wanting to pet a dog, there are two things that we must be mindful of that greatly affect the outcome. In this episode, my guest, Michael Shikashio, a Certified Animal Behavior Consultant, the founder of the Aggression in Dogs Master course and host of the podcast, “The Bitey End of the Dog” explains those two critical things. If you are of a certain age, then you'll remember when Fido was the quintessential name given for any generic dog. Some real dogs actually had this name, President Abraham Lincoln named his dog Fido, but the most famous was an Italian dog that came to public attention in 1943 because of his demonstration of unwavering loyalty to his dead master. Fido was written about in many Italian and international magazines and newspapers, appeared in newsreels throughout Italy, and was bestowed several honors, including a public statue erected in his honor. Today's creature feature is his story.  Additional Resources for the Show.  Michael Shikashio's website: Aggressive dog.com. In this episode of K9 Conservationists, Kayla and Michael Shikashio from The Bitey End of the Dog discuss muzzling. They cover why conservation detection dogs might need muzzles and the best way to acclimate your dog to wearing one. Why is a muzzle a good idea for a CDD based on their work? Muzzles aren’t just for biting, they can also protect the dog from ingesting things they shouldn’t. Types of muzzles and what sort is best for a working dog wearing it long-term Three things to look for are comfort, safety (biting, ingesting things, etc.), and function of the dog’s normal behavior Materials are important to consider Leather Biothane Hard/soft plastic Metal Vinyl Rubber Consider the construction of the muzzle Does it have a safety strap? Brands to consider are: Baskerville Jafco Dean & Tyler Bumas (custom fit biothane) Trust Your Dog Introducing the muzzle/Acclimating a dog to muzzle for long term wear Create positive associations Take your time Go at the dog’s pace Use positive reinforcers with your muzzle to create positive associations Gradually increase the time Careful with dogs that resource guard Break down the steps slowly with the straps Once the muzzle is on, start moving and reinforce Slow and steady wins the race After acclimation, always work with your dog in a level they can tolerate Set your dog up for success, especially while wearing the muzzle Links Mentioned in the Episode: Muzzle Up Project Pre-muzzling handling prep Muzzle training 101 How to feed a dog through a muzzle Where to find Michael Shikashio: Website The Bitey End of the Dog You can support the K9 Conservationists Podcast by joining our Patreon at patreon.com/k9conservationists. Behavior deteriorates under stress. That simple statement has been in most of my presentations, regardless of whether I’m talking about dogs or people. It’s a key idea that we need to keep in mind for reducing behavior we don’t like and creating better responses. Michael Shikashio is well known for his work with aggressive dogs. To shake things up a bit, I invited him to join me in a conversation about aggressive behavior … in people. The human brain is more sophisticated than the canine brain. People often point to our bigger brains as evidence that we are more evolved, more rational, and more thoughtful about our behavior. It’s a nice story, but the vast majority of our behavior springs from the limbic system, the center of our emotions. Aggression is closely tied to emotion. And it can be a powerful tool for getting what we want—in the short term, it works! But the risks of aggression outweigh the rewards. Aggressive behavior breaks down trust and communication. It destroys rapport. We’re a social species; we need good relationships with others before we can truly thrive. https://colleenpelar.com/83
