Hello Poz Vibers, This week we're learning all about the world of puppy play.OUR GUESTS:Dan, known on his scene as Pup Rolo, is a Rubber and Puppy Player known for his advocacy of the Irish kink community. He held the title of Mr Rubber Ireland 2021 and placed second at Mr International Rubber in Chicago in 2023. He is a founder and secretary of Pups and Handlers of Ireland who recently celebrated their tenth birthday as a community group. He produces the Puppy Ireland title hosted during Dublin Leather Weekend which will take place in Pantibar on Saturday 23rd January 2027. Alongside his roles in the pup play space Dan is an active volunteer for both Leathermen of Ireland and Out in Kink, and most recently has established Ireland's newest iteration of Rubber socials under the banner "Shine Ireland" Pup Blondie is a Dublin based kinkster, living and loving life with their partner Rolo. This over caffeinated canine lends a supporting role as the go to volunteer for whatever endeavour the Pups & Handlers of Ireland have in their doggy bowl. Tasks may include lifting heavy things, decorating events and acting as a doggy/dodgy DJ during the Puppy Ireland election. Blondie has attended fetish events from Folsom Berlin to Fort Lauderdale Florida, Manchester to Antwerp and is excited to attend many more in the future. For him, fetish is a link between many communities that create bonds of familiarity and acceptance, love and openness. The ideals of this community are to tear down the stigmas of shame and encourage pride and self care. From one night at a club to a national pup institution — this week, Hide and Seek goes back to where the Australian Pup and Handler Competition began. Jon and Joenas are joined by Pup Tycho, founder of the Australian Pup and Handler Competition, researcher, community organiser and one of the people who helped shape Australia's modern pup and handler scene. Ahead of APHC's return to Boorloo/Perth, Tycho takes us back to the beginning: discovering pup play, stepping into community leadership and creating a national competition with little more than one leather contest, one book about IML and a determination to do things differently. We unpack the ideas that became central to APHC — transparency, accessibility, affordability, safety and the belief that inclusion has to be something you do, not something you simply claim. Tycho reflects on wheelchair access, sensory spaces, keeping events financially accessible and why taking APHC around the country matters. Then we follow the competition through its evolution: the frantic first year, its first interstate outing at Gear'd, Tycho receiving the inaugural Nipper Award from International Puppy and Handler Weekend, the uncertainty of the lockdown years, APHC's post-pandemic return and the growth of an increasingly diverse Australian pup community. Outdoor News: Alligator Attack and Close Shark Encounter Florida alligator attack leaves woman without right arm A 58-year-old Florida woman, Dina Rae Spann, lost her right arm in an alligator attack on the Silver River in Marion County on August 8, 2026. Spann was swimming with a group when the alligator grabbed her. She fought to keep it away from her legs and eventually escaped, but suffered severe injuries to her right arm and left hand. Boater John Gamache and his father heard calls for help and rushed over. The approaching boat appeared to scare the alligator away. Gamache then used rope from his boat as a makeshift tourniquet to slow Spann's bleeding while they got her to first responders. Spann's family says she was back home and in good spirits the next day. Wildlife officials temporarily closed the river and later removed a 9-foot-8-inch alligator from the area. The river has since reopened. Gamache said the incident was unlike anything he had seen during his years visiting the Silver Springs area. Reference: https://www.foxnews.com/travel/boater-scared-off-alligator-used-rope-stop-bleeding-florida-woman-lost-arm Mississippi fisherman escapes close encounter with large shark A Mississippi fisherman had a frightening encounter with an estimated 8-foot shark while wade-fishing for spotted seatrout near Biloxi on August 15. Eric McNally was standing on a shallow sandbar when he felt something tugging on the floating bag holding his fish. He looked down and saw a large brown shark biting the bag. The shark rolled, briefly becoming tangled in it, with its tail coming out of the water just inches from McNally's face. A fishing buddy captured the encounter on video. McNally considered kicking the shark away, but it eventually freed itself and swam off. He then backed toward his friend while watching for the shark and stomping his feet, which he says can help discourage sharks from approaching wading anglers. McNally says sharks are common in the area, especially during the warmer months when baitfish are plentiful. He believes schools of bluefish and ladyfish feeding near the surface can create commotion that attracts larger sharks. The fishermen continued taking precautions, including using nets to remove fish from hooks rather than reaching into the water with their hands. McNally says summer wade-fishing can be especially risky because large sharks are more abundant — and help may be far away if someone is injured Helping Young Horses Adjust to New Surroundings The same principle of gradual exposure applies when working with young colts and horses. A horse's reaction to something unfamiliar is often driven by instinct. A barking dog, a new building, a tarp, farm equipment, or an unfamiliar noise can appear threatening to a horse that has never encountered it before. Desensitizing a horse isn't about forcing it to accept something frightening. The goal is to introduce new experiences gradually while allowing the horse to remain calm and learn that the unfamiliar object or situation does not pose a threat. Start With a Calm Environment Begin training in a familiar, controlled location. Work with the horse when it is relaxed and when you have enough time to proceed without rushing. Introduce one new stimulus at a time. For example, if you want a colt to become comfortable around dogs, don't begin with a barking dog running toward the horse. Start with a calm dog at a safe distance. Allow the Horse to Observe Give the horse an opportunity to look at the unfamiliar object. Horses often need time to process something new. Avoid immediately pulling the horse toward the object. Instead, maintain a safe position and allow the horse to investigate at its own pace. When the horse relaxes, quietly reward the calm behavior. And lastly, end on a High Note. Even if it was only 15 minutes of time together, a success is a success. Introduce Dogs Carefully Dogs can be particularly challenging because they move unpredictably and make sudden noises. If introducing a horse to a dog: Keep the dog under reliable control. Begin with plenty of distance between the animals. Keep the dog calm and prevent chasing or barking at the horse. Allow the horse to observe the dog without pressure. Gradually decrease the distance only while both animals remain calm. End the session before either animal becomes overwhelmed. A young horse that learns to remain calm around a stationary dog may still react when that same dog suddenly runs or barks. Those situations should therefore be introduced separately and gradually. Most importantly, prior to introducing your dog to new horses, you must have very good control (or a handle) on the dog.  Build Confidence, Not Fear Good desensitization teaches a horse that unfamiliar things can be investigated without panic. Repetition matters, but so does timing. Short, successful sessions are generally more useful than pushing a horse until it becomes frightened or exhausted. Handlers should also remember that safety comes first. A frightened horse can move suddenly, kick, rear, or bolt. Anyone working with an inexperienced horse should maintain an appropriate escape route and avoid putting themselves between the horse and something it perceives as threatening. Ohio's Incarcerated Youth Ohio's juvenile justice system is supposed to be a safe place to reform troubled youth, so they can enter the world of adulthood as productive citizens. But years of reporting and firsthand accounts from both staff and former incarcerated youth find that the system is broken. Instead, there is violence against other youth and staff, understaffing, and neglect. And sometimes, formerly incarcerated youth credit their time in juvenile prison as a big reason why they are locked up as an adult. A 2023 study that followed formerly incarcerated kids in Ohio found they are six times more likely to die violent deaths in the seven years after their release than kids who hadn't been locked up. C.P. Handler is a social worker and youth advocate who worked for years in Ohio's state and county juvenile detention centers. She has written about her experiences in a new book called, "The Light Within the Walls," and she joins us for Monday's "Sound of Ideas," hosted by Drew Maziasz, in for Stephanie Haney. Tuesday night there is a book launch and panel discussion happening at JFX in University Heights, which stands for Jewish Family Experience, featuring people who have touched the juvenile justice system. We've also invited some of those panelists to join in this conversation. We reached out to the Ohio Department of Youth Services to comment on some of the claims from the book. It is being featured at the 2026 Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival on Saturday night, as part of their "Stories of Resistance" program. In information systems, we saw the rise of qualitative scholarship in the 1990s. In the 2000s, we saw the rise of analytics in research, fueled by the emergence of big data. In the 2010s, we saw the rise of econometric methods, diff-in-diff designs, and field experiments. What is next? Autonomous scholarship, fueled by AI agents that get infused into research processes. We are the cusp of this new era and are beginning to experiment and trial how research might look like going forward. We discuss a few options for what autonomous scholarship could look like: will AI be a surrogate for humans? Will AI augment humans and lead to new forms of collaborative research? Will AI merely scale research processes? And how would we validate the autonomous components of research processes? It's collaborating with this whole process and working together to save our water."In this second half of their conversation, our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, talk with Lolita Shaffer to move past the why of water leak detection dogs and into the how.A Cherokee Nation–funded study sent two golden retrievers across 30 miles of pipe in five days, flagging areas where acoustic crews later confirmed a leak 100% of the time, totaling roughly 4 million gallons lost. A dog "hitting" an odor pool isn't a pin on a map. Rather, it's a dome of scent that has to be read, triangulated, and cross-checked. This is the same skill Robin brings from human-remains work, where handlers report behavior, not conclusions.That craft of analyzing that dome of scent, Lolita insists, has to be built and licensed like any trade.Handlers calibrate dogs to a district's specific chemical signature, as chlorine and fluorine sit close enough on the periodic table to complicate a reading. They drill leash discipline, since losing a leash near traffic means losing a thousand-pound risk. And they finish an Operational Readiness Training Evaluation, which is a week embedded with water operators, capped by a double-blind test over a live leak field.There are some pretty big stakes to justify this rigor. Digging up a suspected leak can run $3,000 an hour, so a utility needs confidence and not just “educated guesses”.With up to half the water workforce retiring within five years, and dogs now being asked about lead-pipe detection, it's clearly a crucial, credentialed profession. A family in Colorado is facing $300,000 in medical debt, more than two years after a K-9 officer living next door climbed the fence and attacked a two-year-old girl and her father. Recently, the K-9 handler was found 'not guilty' in the incident because he has immunity as a member of law enforcement doing his official duties -- in this case, he was cleaning the K-9 officer's cage. During her career, Julie has received numerous awards competing with her dogs all around the world. Throughout the years, Julie has placed 1st overall dozens of times and won many categories with her dogs at International Annual Police Working Dog K9 Olympics. She is also recognized as a leader and an expert within the dog training industry; training provider for Police and Special Forces; she often teaches at local and national courses and seminars.
