Back in November, Kate Graham (who you may remember from episode 40) interviewed me as part of her Oracle Mountain Chats - a series of conversations with the speakers and visionaries of the first ever OracleFest. I really enjoyed our conversation and thought I'd share it with you all here. You'll hear us chat about:  titles and roles like “oracle” or “shaman” in modern times; why I think the practice of animist kinship might have kept our ancestors from experiencing burnout; how our disdain for our pre-industrial ancestors might keep us disconnected from wisdom and possibility; the call of these times to reclaim our humanity and what practices might bring us there; what forces are shaping us and how they leave us feeling broken and flawed; our purpose individually and as humans; the one practice I'd like to suggest or invite people into in these times; some more of my own “healing journey” …and more OracleFest Online will be happening Jan 31-Feb 2, 2025. "You cannot solve your problems with the same thinking you used to create them." Meet Kate Graham, shamanic oracle Highly Claircognizant Clairsentient Oracle | Business Guide | Shamanic Artist | Speaker Hi, my name is Kate and I am a shamanic oracle, which I know sounds really fancy and intimidating but what I do is combine traditional shamanism with my intuitive skills to provide all my clients an opportunity to deeply heal, transform suffering from the root, and support that change being long-lasting. No quick fixes here, but rapid deep everlasting transformation? Yes. Shamanism, if you do not know, is the application of ancient healing practices, pre-colonization and pro-connection to nature. I came into Shamanism through my own spiritual journey having seizures during my preteen years, and have completed a variety of modality training and certifications that have allowed me to feel confident claiming that title. The folk who come to me for assistance tend to be business owners and high performers who feel overwhelmed, disconnected and spiritually curious. Through my work I help them develop their own mental, physical rest and spiritual development practices and rituals to help them manage their emotions, increase their creativity, enhance productivity and relieve stress. Ep 40. How Ancestral Practices and Laughter Help Us Navigate Being Human (w/ Kate Graham)

If we held up a laugh-meter (like the one from Monsters, Inc) what would our laugh levels be? and Why do we just feel drawn to certain places? and Do our ancestors matter? and Is it possible to befriend crows while being a nomad? These are the types of questions (serious and silly) you'll hear around today's fire where I'm joined by the ever-optimistic, comedy-loving Kate Graham -  a shamanic oracle and creator of the Empath Energetics intuition development and archetypal healing program. With training in hypnotherapy, yin and restorative yoga, thai yoga massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and shamanism, Kate uses her experiences to teach people how to trust their own bodies and hearts. She has also worked on an alpaca farm, lived nomadically in a van, and moved to manage a retreat in the Scottish Highlands, all in the name of intuition. So for those of you familiar with my story (goatherd turned organic farmer turned yoga teacher turned shamanic practitioner turned nomad… etc) you can imagine that we have a lot of shared conversation topics… and they will wander through territory deep, wise, irreverent, visionary, and most likely sort of meaningless, too. Topics like: tuning into the energy of lands and locations; how we might be selling our long-ago ancestors short; the beauty of it taking all kinds; why did we put structures which hold us in place into place?; moving from hopelessness to optimism; what remembering ancestral ways of meaning-making, healing, celebrating, and integrating have meant for us personally; the balance of light and dark; the role of tricksters, crows, and comedians in society; the difference between healers who put things back together and healers who walk the edges with you; why healing work can feel so hard and exhausting sometimes and some shifts in approach which might make it easier; how love and abolition are teaching us right now… and more. This is a longer conversation because we just kept riffing off each other. But watching it back as I was preparing these notes, I kept finding myself laughing and wondering about things all over again.  Join us around the fire? You're most welcome here. May we each find the gift of our part in things and the places, people, and rituals to nurture those sparks. May we laugh more than we think we should and be free to flow where our medicine is most useful and our hearts feel most alive. May we have the courage and trust to come undone and rediscover something of even greater beauty. May we love our boundaries and therefore be able to love everyone. May we befriend the crows. You can find Kate G: Heartsfrontier.com YouTube @heartsfrontier Instagram @shamanicoraclekate And if you've come for Kate G, I hope you'll stick around for more conversations to access, repair, inspire, and evolve our humanity and serve the wild, tender aliveness of our personal and collective hearts. One of the best things about 2022 is that face-to-face events are back. It's been a pleasure to connect with people in person again for the first time in a long time, and great to see such enthusiasm for face-to-face conferences and events after everything that has been happening in the last few years. Last week I was at UNLEASH World in Paris, and as well as hosting some fantastic speakers on the Talent and Recruiting stage, I did a lot of podcast recording. Thank you to Kate Graham, Marc Coleman and Jon Kennard at UNLEASH for organising a dedicated podcasting booth, which Recruiting Future shared with The Chad & Cheese Show and the Tech Talks podcast. I recorded long-form interviews with three speakers; Lisa Scales from Nestle, Charu Malhotra from PA Consulting and Samantha Ramsay from Ernst & Young. I'll be publishing these over the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, I wanted to give you a taste of the event, so here are four short interviews to provide a flavour of the topics that are top of mind in the industry at the moment. First up, you'll hear me sharing my thoughts on the event in a recording made for The Chad and Cheese Show. Next is a conversation with my co-author and collaborator, Mervyn Dinnen, followed by fellow podcaster David Savage from Tech Talks. Finally, as a bit of a bonus, I've got a quick-fire discussion with Bas van de Hatred about the recently published 2022 edition of his annual research into the state of corporate careers sites.

Steven Del Duca will become the next leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. But at this weekend's convention, the unassigned delegates shouldn't go too easy on him. Less a surprise and more a yawning "oh really?", Ontario Liberals are choosing their new leader this weekend, Saturday March 7th, in one of the last delegated convention leadership races in Canadian politics. Over 2000 delegates, mostly selected a month prior by Liberals in meetings held by each riding association, will gather at the International Centre in Mississauga. According to the party, 1171 of 2084 elected delegates or about 56% are pledged to Del Duca. Another 350 or so "Super Delegates" - current and former Liberal MPPs, MPs and such - are free to vote however they want. So, why not deny Del Duca the easy first ballot win?First off, if this convention were any more predictable it would have happened already. Any hope of newsworthiness is basically lost, UNLESS there was a surprise on the first ballot. Secondly, look at the alternate candidates, and what they've brought to the table. People like Kate Graham and Brenda Hollingsworth have shown themselves to be smart, engaged and interesting potential leaders. Graham particularly has mounted a last minute rally to gather in any stray votes out there, showing a real spark and attracting the one card-carrying Sudbury Politics host. Broadly, the whole concept of the delegated convention and how leaders should be chosen is under scrutiny (that's a discussion for another day) and stifling the voices of newer Liberal activists seems counter-productive. In the end, the Ontario Liberals will make the safe choice. But the party's establishment doesn't have to serve the leadership to Steven Del Duca on a silver platter. Send it to a second ballot. Watch the freed delegates congregate, perhaps around the front runner, or perhaps to send a message to Liberals they can take to the bank in 2022. - Jeff MacIntyre- Rachel Adriaans- Richard Eberhardt

This week on Open Sources Guelph, Christmas comes early. At least it does if you want to hear sound bites from the six contenders that want to be the future leader of the Liberal Party of Ontario. They were all in Guelph last weekend, and we got them all on the record. Speaking of Ontario matters, we're also going to talk about the current situation with the teachers, and then we'll look to the other side of the pond and their current electoral situation. This Thursday, December 12, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Boris' Day. As we go to air, the people in the United Kingdom will be going to the polls, and if you thought Russian interference in an election was a purely American phenomenon, well Reddit users have got some news for you! Redditors discovered that a leak of supposed trade documents is linked to Russian disinformation, which makes an even more difficult election ever more difficult. So what's going to happen when the votes are counted? Does Boris bounce back, or does Corbyn come with the upset? Wrought for Teacher. If you thought last week's one-day strike by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation was the end of the labour strife with Ontario's teachers, think again. The OSSTF is looking again to a hold another one-day strike and they have submitted a list of demands to the Province in the hopes of diverting it. Meanwhile, the elementary teachers have escalated their job action with the second phase of a work-to-rule campaign, and the Catholic school teachers are planning job action of their own. How much longer can schools operate with this labour disruption? Liberal Media. This past weekend, the Ontario Liberal Leadership campaign really got underway with the first debate between the six hopefuls, and it happened right here in Guelph. That debate was over two hours long, but afterward, we got the chance to spend a few minutes with all six of the candidates - Kate Graham, Mitzie Hunter, Michael Coteau, Steven Del Duca, Brenda Hollingsworth, and Alvin Tedjo - and chat with them about their odds of winning, and what the Liberals need to do to make a comeback in 2022. The concept of “learning in-the-flow of work”, coined by Josh Bersin, is a simple notion; learners can access learning at their point of need in the workplace. See Bersin’s article “A New Paradigm For Corporate Training: Learning In The Flow of Work” (Bersin, 2018) available at: https://joshbersin.com/2018/06/a-new-paradigm-for-corporate-training-learning-in-the-flow-of-work/. He cites the 2018 LinkedIn Learning survey of over 4000 L&D leaders and business professionals that highlighted the biggest barrier to learning is that employees simply don’t have enough time for learning; respondents want to learn at their own pace (58%) and in-the-flow of work (49%) (LinkedIn, 2018). This is further supported by Towards Maturity’s “Learner Voice” research (Towards Maturity, 2016) which found that 91% of learners want to learn at their own pace. See https://towardsmaturity.org/2016/11/03/learner-voice-part-3/. However, learning in-the-flow of work requires learning practitioners to design and facilitate learning close to the workface and that requires new thinking and tactics. We can no longer rely on “the course”. Andy Lancaster, Head of Learning at CIPD, David James, Chief Learning Officer at Looop Learning, and Kate Graham, Head Of Content at Fosway Group discuss this and more.

Kate Graham opened the day with introductory remarks, followed by a keynote speech from former Premier of Alberta, Rachel Notley. Notley spoke about the known, universal barriers that stand in the way of women's leadership in politics, the importance of building alliances across party lines, and a new troubling development that will likely prevent women from entering the ring at all.

It appears that women are under-represented at a senior level in L&D. What's going on to address this and what do we all need to be doing? David and Kate explore these points - and more - within this important conversation.    KEY TAKEAWAYS  How would you describe Fosways role in L&D and your role within the company? We are an independent analyst and our role within the industry is to look at trends and the progression across technology and talent. Our role is to help corporate organisations make better decisions, We also liaise closely with vendors to ensure we have a pragmatic picture. My role involves working across the teams and all content comes through me providing me with an overview of all that is going on.  What is the current conversation around women in learning? The statistics are not great for women progressing into senior management.  I have been involved in the conversation across social media platforms and the engagement was far and above what I was expecting, it has captured people's imaginations and is continuing to grow as people join the debate. Research based on the worldwide learning and skills group and used job titles as an indicator; in support roles the split was 33% men to 67% women,  in practitioner roles 53% men to  47% women, mid-level 49% men to 51% women, senior roles 69% men to 31% women this makes clear there is a barrier and this is a conversation we need to have. Its opened people's eyes to an issue that we didn't know was there previously.  What are you hoping to achieve from this conversation? It's about changing the statistics, ultimately women should be in those senior roles if they want to be and how as an industry can we support that through mentors etc. Mentoring is a great place to start and we are now looking at the practical steps we can implement to move forward. It isn't just about women it's about the steps anyone needs to take to move forward.  How does this conversation relate to the modernisation that is required in L&D? The important thing for this debate is that it doesn't lose sight of the link to our profession. We are and should be open-minded to the possibilities, we can challenge our own thinking and desire for flexibility and learning. Faced with this challenge, the statistics, and this ongoing conversation about women in learning that we should hold ourselves accountable for our own development in this area and continue the conversation.    BEST MOMENTS  ‘That's real life and to understand that is empowering; we can share stories about ourselves'  ‘It should be about lifting everyone up L&D is a great industry to be in because it's such a positive place to be'  ‘There were more people named David on the panel than women'  ‘It's about how the vision is executed within the company'     VALUABLE RESOURCES  Fosway Group website  Kate Graham Twitter  #womeninlearning twitter  Kate Graham LinkedIn  ABOUT THE HOST  David James    David has been a People Development professional for more than 20 years, most notably as Director of Talent, Learning & OD for The Walt Disney Company across Europe, the Middle East & Africa.  As well as being the Chief Learning Strategist at Looop, David is a prominent writer and speaker on topics around modern and digital L&D as well as an active member of the CIPD L&D Advisory Board.     CONTACT METHOD  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/davidinlearning?lang=en  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidjameslinkedin/   Website: https://www.looop.co/   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
