Upgrading your business is more than a buzzword — it's a strategic mindset. In this episode of the Building Better Developers podcast, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche explore what it really means to upgrade your business in today's fast-moving, tech-driven world. From tools and processes to training and hiring decisions, they offer practical advice for business owners ready to make smarter, more efficient moves. What Upgrading Your Business Really Means Upgrading your business means taking a proactive approach to making it more efficient, productive, and resilient. It's not just about buying new hardware or using trendy software — it's about improving the way your business operates at every level. Rob Broadhead explains how boutique consulting — like the kind offered by Developer Nation — goes beyond just staffing and focuses on solving the right problems. By identifying a business's unique strengths and removing friction in daily operations, upgrading becomes a strategic investment in growth. “We're not here to throw hours at a project. We help you solve real problems with focused solutions.” – Rob Broadhead Upgrading Your Business Tools: Are You Falling Behind? One of the easiest ways to start upgrading your business is by evaluating the tools your team uses every day. Rob reflects on the days when a computer could take five minutes to boot up — a daily delay that adds up over time. Whether it's modern laptops, cloud platforms, or extra monitors, the right tools can unlock better productivity. And while Michael loves open-source solutions, he emphasizes that businesses need to weigh the cost of learning against the speed of implementation. “Are you spending more time learning the tool than using it? That's the key question.” – Michael Meloche Upgrade Your Team: Train or Hire? Another area where upgrading your business pays off is in your people. Rob and Michael tackle the classic dilemma: should you train your current team or hire experienced professionals? Rob favors investing upfront in talent that can hit the ground running. Michael agrees — but says strategic training also works when you have committed long-term staff. Either way, upgrading your workforce ensures you don't waste time on preventable errors and inefficiencies. “Hiring cheap cost us more in the long run. Upfront investment saved us months.” – Rob Broadhead Don't Forget Security, Compliance & Maintenance Upgrading your business also means protecting it. Michael stresses the importance of staying compliant with software licenses and keeping systems secure and updated — especially in industries like healthcare, banking, or legal services. “You can't afford to overlook compliance and security in today's business climate.” – Michael Meloche Watch for Time Wasters The hosts encourage listeners to pay attention to how time is being used (or wasted). Whether it's slow software, outdated equipment, or inefficient workflows, these “thieves of time” are often overlooked but easy to fix with the right upgrades. “Upgrading your business might mean replacing an old monitor — or rethinking how your team spends its day.” – Rob Broadhead This Week's Challenge: Start Upgrading Your Business This week, spend time auditing your business. Watch how employees work, where delays happen, and what causes frustration. Then make a short list of the easiest wins: faster internet, clearer processes, better equipment. Even a small improvement today can save hours next month. Stay Connected with Developer Nation Liked the episode? Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform or catch the video version on YouTube. In episode 693, Megan chats to Morgan Peaceman about building strong systems that support both content creation and content maintenance for food bloggers. Morgan Peaceman has been blogging for the last 6 years, but only really went all in as of 2023. Her approach to food blogging and recipe development comes from her love of quick and easy family friendly recipes, with fresh, simple ingredients that makes all her recipes accessible for the most novice of cooks. In this episode, you'll learn how to create sustainable systems for updating and publishing blog content while avoiding burnout and staying organized as a food blogger. Key points discussed include: - Build systems that support sustainability: Morgan shares how she structured her blog workflow to stay consistent without burning out, including tracking and updating older content regularly. - Use tools that align with your needs: From KeySearch and RankIQ to the lesser-known but powerful Thruuu, Morgan walks us through her preferred keyword research and optimization tools. - Track updates in a color-coded system: A clear Google Sheets setup using red, yellow, and green helps Morgan manage what's been updated, what's in progress, and what needs attention. - Lean on your community: Morgan emphasizes how finding a group of fellow creators, even through DMs, has been a game changer for support and motivation. - Invest intentionally in your business: Every year, Morgan makes one significant investment in her business—whether that's a branding shoot, SEO conference, or hiring help for social media. - Make your blog user-friendly: She reminds us how crucial it is to optimize recipe cards and surface key details at the top of posts to align with real user behavior. - Give yourself permission to rest: True rest is essential for longevity, and Morgan stresses how ignoring rest leads to burnout and illness. - Adapt your investments to what you need most right now: Prioritize what feels most urgent for your growth this year and allow your next steps to evolve accordingly. “Creating the escape room becomes the escape room.” New York City is REPOD co-host David Spira's home market. Whenever he's recommending escape rooms to guests and visitors, his favorite go-to is MyssTic Escape Rooms in Brooklyn, NY. Two of their escape rooms have won Golden Lock awards: Ghost Light, and their newest game, The Bird. Gara Roda and Moritz Marti, the co-founders of MyssTic Rooms, join us today on REPOD to talk about the challenges of building a world class escape room in bustling New York City, especially when they are far from their home countries. There are many reasons it's challenging to build escape rooms in NYC. Real estate is expensive, the hurdles of navigating the city's fire codes are many, and square footage is at a premium. An affordable place for their business meant a basement location which came with its own set of complications. A near catastrophic flood in the early days led to some pretty impressive flood mitigation. Shortly after they first opened, a tragic fire occurred in an escape room in Poland, which led to a crackdown by fire inspectors all over the world, but with especially tight restrictions in New York. Gara and Moritz persevered, despite all the setbacks, and it was inspiring to hear them talk about how all the different constraints led to more creativity. As David points out, even though their games are small in comparison to other escape rooms, "every single nook and cranny had an abundance of detail." These two escape room creators have endured seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and yet have recently just been honored with another Golden Lock award for their newest game, The Bird. They mention at the end of the episode that eventually they are looking to move back to Europe and are open to finding a partner or even possibly a buyer. So hit 'em up if this sounds interesting to you. "Hiding interesting objects in plain sight is a hallmark of Great Gotham Challenge." In New York, everyone's got a story. A gimmick. A hustle. The city's crawling with characters. Some are just colorful. Others... well, others are part of something bigger. A secret. A puzzle. That hot dog vendor on the corner? A whispered password might just grant you access to a secret underground lair. You never really know if someone's just being New York... or if you're already inside the game. Capturing this elusive feeling of a magical underground is what drives Jon Seale and Ryan Patch. They run the Great Gotham Challenge, a massive city-wide puzzle adventure that weaves through the bones of New York City. They describe it as part puzzle hunt, part Amazing Race, and part immersive theater. I really enjoyed hearing about all the custom props they create for the Great Gotham Challenge that look like ordinary New York objects, but are actually part of the game. There is something magical about an item hidden in plain sight that players will overlook until they're clued to take a deeper look. Much of their game is designed to encourage players to explore stories of New York's oddities and its secret histories. They also talk about working on Compass, formerly known as "Midnight Madness." Hi Mamas, Feeling tired, stretched thin, or stuck in routines that just don't feel good anymore? This episode is your permission slip to let go… of old habits, outdated expectations, and the mental load that's no longer serving you. We're walking through five steps to help you gently (and powerfully) release the things weighing you down… and make space for the peace, presence, and alignment you deserve. ✨ In this episode: • How to recognize what feels forced or heavy • Giving yourself permission to change… even when it's hard • Why letting go doesn't have to be dramatic • What you're actually making room for (and why that matters so much) • Real talk about guilt, judgment, and people-pleasing • Personal stories that'll make you feel seen and encouraged And if you're ready to declutter your home too?
Hi Mamas, Letting go isn't failure… it's strength. In today's episode, I'm breaking down this powerful quote from Eckhart Tolle: "Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on." When life gets busy, messy, or overwhelming, it's easy to believe we have to hold onto everything… every responsibility, every commitment, every expectation. But real growth happens when we learn to gently release what no longer fits the season we're in. And that act of letting go? That's true strength. In this episode, you'll learn: ✨ Why releasing is a form of courage, not quitting ✨ How to recognize what's no longer serving you ✨ A simple challenge to start letting go with more peace and confidence
AI is everywhere. It's an undeniably powerful tool, it's evolving fast, and it's not going away. But even with all that momentum, there are still some things it can't do and some things you should absolutely let it handle for you. It also provokes a lot of different reactions. For some, fear is the first response. Others feel overwhelmed or confused. Maybe you're just tired of the noise! All anyone has talked about for the last two years has been AI, and honestly? I get it. Every one of those reactions is valid. Join The Co-op - The Membership for Online Businesses Connect with Abagail Instagram All the Links! " Am I really playing with Neil Patrick Harris?" In keeping with the theme of Box Two, Neil Patrick Harris is back for his second appearance on our podcast. And not only that, he also brought a friend. Jonathan Bayme, CEO of theory11, is a longtime collaborator and Neil's bestie. They first met at a magic show Jonathan created for the Nomad Hotel in New York. Neil and Jonathan quickly bonded over a shared passion for elevating the art of magic, a deep appreciation for fine craftsmanship, and creating experiences full of wonder and joy. Jonathan created his company, theory11, with the goal of crafting magic tricks and playing cards that not only worked flawlessly, but were also beautiful to look at. Jonathan worked with Neil to produce Box Two, which was created with a very similar aesthetic and vibe. They very candidly explained the thought process behind design decisions such as relying on an online chat interface, and how they achieved certain magical effects. Box Two is gorgeous, with hefty props that felt good and looked good. I especially enjoyed hearing about the playtesting and mechanical process behind producing such a complicated boxed game. Jonathan also shares his secret to networking. Whether it's about tracking down JJ Abrams, or writing weekly emails at twelve years old to David Copperfield's longtime executive producer, I really enjoyed his stories of perseverance when it comes to making connections. Training Principles for Lifters 30+: Build Strength, Save Time, Stay Consistent Training can feel overwhelming, especially with so many conflicting voices in the fitness world. In this episode, we break down the key principles of effective, time-efficient strength training to help you build physical freedom, longevity, and resilience—without wasting hours in the gym. Many lifters struggle to balance fitness with the demands of real life. Whether you're in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond, training smart is essential to staying strong, capable, and injury-free. This episode lays out the fundamental principles of resistance training, how to maximize results with minimal time, and why strength is about more than just muscle—it's about building a body that supports your long-term health and daily life. If you're looking to train efficiently while maintaining consistency, this episode is for you. The Key to Sustainable Strength Training One of the biggest factors in a successful fitness routine is sustainability. Many people create unrealistic training schedules that don't fit their lifestyle, leading to burnout or inconsistency. Instead of aiming for an unsustainable six-day-per-week program, consider what is truly realistic for your life. For most middle-aged lifters, two to three resistance training sessions per week—totaling around 90 minutes—can be incredibly effective. Aiming for 8,000-10,000 daily steps further supports overall fitness without adding excessive strain. Remember, consistency over time matters more than short bursts of intense training. By focusing on a realistic, sustainable plan, you set yourself up for long-term success rather than short-lived motivation that fades away. The Most Efficient Exercises for Strength & Longevity Not all exercises are created equal. To get the biggest bang for your buck in the gym, prioritize movements that work multiple muscle groups and joints simultaneously. These include: Squats (engage legs, core, and balance) Deadlifts (train posterior chain, grip strength, and overall power) Pressing Motions (like bench press or overhead press for upper body strength) These compound movements build muscle, strengthen connective tissues, and reinforce natural movement patterns essential for daily activities. If time is limited, focusing on these fundamental lifts ensures you're making the most of your gym sessions. Additionally, barbells are a powerful tool due to their scalability, availability, and ability to progressively overload—allowing you to steadily build strength over time. While machines have their place, free-weight movements generally offer more functional benefits for long-term fitness. Making Strength Training a Lifestyle, Not a Burden One of the biggest barriers to consistent training is the feeling that it's a burden. Instead of treating workouts as a chore, approach them as an investment in your future self. Think of training like cooking—just as a good meal balances salt, fat, acid, and heat, an effective program balances strength, mobility, and endurance. It's also important to trust the process. Results don't happen overnight, and progress requires faith in the system. Strength training is about more than aesthetics—it's about preserving function, preventing injuries, and feeling like a beast well into your later years. By establishing core training principles and sticking to them, you can cut through the noise of the fitness world and focus on what truly works for long-term health and physical freedom.
