One of the myths that surround “negative” emotions is that if we look at them, they become real and they become bigger but if ignore them they eventually go away. As if we can just forget them by denying their existence. That could not be further from the truth. The symptom may temporarily alleviate but the feelings always lurk around waiting to return at the soonest circumstance that will grant them access to return. By facing the emotion, however, we give it a voice and offer it a chance to be known, serve its purpose and be able to safely discharge. In this way, we do not let it fester and grow and do sneaky self-sabotage attacks. Instead, we make room, invite it in and allow it to be known and be reconciled with our psyche. When we stop searching for these missing parts of us because we gave them permission to return to us, we no longer chase the addiction as the addiction itself was just a means of avoidance. We stop the avoidance, the addiction voluntarily relinquishes. We hear a lot about the importance of being more present, almost to the point of it becoming a cliché. But when we stop to actually think about what it means to be in the present moment, it’s kind of laughable that we don’t seem to be naturally oriented to be there, because the present moment is where life is. All the striving and creating and collecting and cleaning is all for the purpose of having this thing called “my life.” And yet, how often am I actually “in” my life?   Guest Bio Raphael Cushnir is a leading voice in the world of emotional intelligence and present moment awareness. Feelings, what really are they? What triggers them and why are we so keen to avoid feeling the ones we don’t like? Raphael Cushnir is one of the foremost leaders in the field of emotional connection and present moment awareness. His unique approach to connecting to our emotions, that he calls ‘surfing’, requires us to dive deep into our feelings and consciously pay close attention to our felt experience, without labelling or analyzing it. Using this approach and paying subtle attention to our feelings, emotions become messengers that lead us to a greater understanding of who we are and what we want to achieve. The more attuned we grow to our emotions, the wiser and more discerning we become, and the more success and peace we can find in our lives.
