Today, I interview Catherine G. Lucas who opens up about losing her voice in the midst of a painful breakdown. In her late teens she was already standing on stage for public speaking competitions, but by the time her parents divorced during her university years, the weight of family wounds caught up with her. Instead of enjoying summer with friends, she found herself in an acute psychiatric ward, her world shattered and her voice silenced. Her breakthrough came much later, when she discovered that what had been called a breakdown could also be seen as an awakening. It took years of reframing and deep inner work to see her experience not as illness, but as a turning point with the potential for healing.Through mindfulness, patient advocacy, and writing her first book, In Case of Spiritual Emergency, Catherine began to speak from her whole self rather than hide in shame. Today she helps others step into their deeper calling, showing that finding your voice is not about perfection but about expressing the truth of who you are in a way that heals and uplifts.__________________Catherine G. Lucas is the author of four books on how to move successfully through crisis and harness the transformational power it holds. A former university professor, Catherine left her academic career behind to step into her soul's deeper calling, following a profound crisis of awakening. She went on to set up a UK charity and now helps people step into their deeper calling. Her media appearances include BBC Radio 4 and TimeWarner TV, and she regularly speaks internationally. More recently, Catherine has convened the highly acclaimed Birth the New Earth summit.__________________Find Catherine here:https://www.youtube.com/user/CatherineGLucashttps://www.catherine-g-lucas.com/https://www.co-creatingourfuture.world/https://www.co-creatingourfuture.world/free-gift-download/Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. Manifestation isn't broken, you just need better tools. In this episode, Mia Magik joins me to flip the script on everything you think you know about creating the life you want. Forget the vision boards for a second. Mia's approach is rooted in healing, not just hoping. She explains why manifesting love starts with examining where you're being unloving, and why calling in abundance means looking at your scarcity patterns. We discuss the physical toll of consuming true crime and drama-filled content, the proven science of water holding intention, and simple kitchen rituals that turn your daily routine into a manifestation practice. Mia also opens up about her own journey through relationship struggles, self-betrayal, and finding her way back to her power through some seriously uncomfortable inner work. This conversation touches on the Sacred Rage Ritual, why women's anger is revolutionary, and Mia's current explorations with Tantra as a tool for understanding power, surrender, and healing. Whether you're new to manifestation or your practice has gone stale, this episode offers practical wisdom you can use today.Connect with Mia: https://miamagik.com/Mia on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/miamagik/Link to sign up for Mia's Retreats: https://miamagik.com/2025retreatrooms/Link to purchase Mia's book: IntuWitchinConnect with Sabrina:https://www.instagram.com/Sabrina_Soto/www.SabrinaSoto.com

In this teaching, Samuel emphasizes the importance of anchoring prayer in biblical understanding and practice, using the upper room as a strong imagery. He discusses the significance of waiting upon the Lord and praying according to God's will, rather than personal desires. Samuel highlights the transformative power of waiting and prayer, which refine and prepare individuals for the fulfillment of God's promises. He draws parallels between the disciples' experience in the upper room and the process of spiritual growth, stressing the need for obedience, submission, and alignment with the Holy Spirit. Davon Eldemire grew up in the hood in Bridgeport, Connecticut with no father in the picture, raised by his mom and sisters as the only boy in the house. He had a passion for basketball but eventually got consumed by the street life, giving up his dream. That path led to a robbery where he shot someone and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. In this interview, Davon opens up about what it was like growing up without a father, how the streets pulled him in, and the moment that changed everything and landed him in prison. He shares what the years behind bars taught him about life, the mindset shift that turned his sentence into an opportunity, and how he is now using his experience to mentor the youth and keep them from going down the same path. #RaisedInTheHood #PrisonStories #LockedInPodcast #StreetLife #TrueCrimePodcast #PrisonLife #RedemptionStory #lifeafterprison Thank you to BLUECHEW & PRIZEPICKS for sponsoring this episode: BlueChew: Visit https://bluechew.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout to get your first month of BlueChew FREE & pay five bucks for shipping. Are we living in and collectively participating in a planetary nervous system? Are we all creative participants guiding Earth's destiny? Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Leadership Beyond the Checklist: How “Being” Leaders Create Value and Navigate ComplexityWhat does it really mean to become better—not just at what we do, but in who we are?In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Ryan Gottfredson, a best-selling author and leadership professor whose work has transformed the way we think about growth. Ryan explains why most leadership training focuses too much on “doing” and not enough on “being”—and how that shift makes all the difference in navigating complexity, creating value, and leading others in meaningful ways.We talk about the difference between dependent, independent, and interdependent thinking, why constructive criticism is such a powerful test of our growth, and how true leadership is less about checking boxes and more about becoming someone others genuinely want to follow. If you've ever wondered how to elevate your mindset, strengthen your leadership, or simply become a better version of yourself, this conversation is packed with insights you won't want to miss.
When God Spoke to Me: A Journey of Personal Transformation Have you ever wondered what it feels like when God speaks to you? It's a profound experience that can lead to a Personal Transformation. Imagine walking down the street and suddenly feeling a sense of clarity and purpose. It's as if God spoke to me through a stranger, offering insights I never expected. What if I told you that God spoke to me in my head during moments of doubt? These experiences have shaped my life in ways I couldn't have imagined. It's not just about hearing a voice; it's about understanding the message and embracing the change it brings. The Power of Unexpected Encounters Sometimes, God spoke to me through another person, and it was in these moments that I found the guidance I needed. These encounters often come when we least expect them, offering a new perspective on our journey. It's amazing how a simple conversation can lead to a Personal Transformation. Listening to the Inner Voice There are times when God spoke to me in my head, providing comfort and direction. This inner voice can be a powerful tool for change, helping us navigate life's challenges. By tuning in, we can discover a path to Personal Transformation that aligns with our true purpose. Embracing Change and Growth Every time God spoke to me through a stranger, it was a reminder that growth often comes from unexpected places. For Ken Miller, God spoke to him as he started his third jail sentence. These moments of connection can inspire us to embrace change and pursue a life of meaning and fulfilment. It's about recognising the signs and taking action towards a Personal Transformation. In conclusion, the journey of Personal Transformation is deeply personal and unique to each individual. Whether God spoke to me through another person or God spoke to me in my head, these experiences have been pivotal in shaping my path. Embrace these moments, and let them guide you towards a life of purpose and fulfilment. In this episode I sit down with Andrew and Kara Root to talk about their new book, A Pilgrimage Into Letting Go. Written out of their journey walking St. Cuthbert's Way with their children, the book reflects on parenting, pastoring, and the hard but necessary work of releasing control. Together we explore why modern life pushes us to manage every detail, how uncontrollability can actually be a gift, and what it looks like to see parenting as a pilgrimage. Along the way, we talk about prayer as listening, the difference between being a tourist and a pilgrim, and the ways God encounters us when we surrender to presence. This is a conversation about trust, family, and faith that invites us to walk with open hands and open hearts.Andrew Root is the Carrie Olson Baalson Professor of Youth and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary, USA. He writes and researches in areas of theology, ministry, culture and younger generations. His most recent books are Evangelism in an Age of Despair (Baker, 2025), The Church in an Age of Secular Mysticisms (Baker, 2023), Churches and the Crisis of Decline (Baker, 2022), The Congregation in a Secular Age (Baker, 2021), and The Pastor in a Secular Age: Ministry to People Who No Longer Need God (Baker, 2019). In addition, he serves as theologian in residence for Youthfront. Rev. Kara K. Root is the author of The Deepest Belonging (2021) and Receiving This Life: (2023). Pastor of Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN, a Christian community that shapes its life around worship, hospitality and Sabbath rest, she is a trained Spiritual Director and Certified Educator in the PCUSA. Being mom to two intriguing teenagers (and a sweet dog), and wife and proofreader to a wily theologian, spices up her vocational calling and keeps her fully immersed in life. She has written for Sparkhouse, Working Preacher, Christian Century, Christianity Today, Faith and Leadership, Patheos and more. Kara leads retreats and workshops on sabbath rest, prayer practices, and church leadership and transformation. In this deeply reflective episode, hosts Mike and Mark unpack Joseph Nguyen's powerful insights from Don't Believe Everything You Think. Together, they explore how our relationship with thought directly shapes our inner peace, emotions, and even our identity. With a carefully curated set of clips and commentary, this episode invites listeners to step outside their minds and reconnect with who they truly are beneath all the noise.Key Concepts & Insights:Thoughts are not reality – They only have power when we believe them.Intention drives emotion – What you seek emotionally is a mirror of what you believe you need.High-stakes pragmatism – When the pressure's on, we need tools to pause, not react.Your true self is always present – The world nudges us gently (or forcefully) back to now.Episode Clip Guide:INTRO: "Thoughts Are Harmless Until You Believe Them" (30s)Joseph Nguyen opens the show with a grounding insight: thoughts themselves are neutral, but the moment we take them as truth, they begin to shape our emotional and mental state. Mike and Mark reflect on how this concept redefines our inner critic—not as an enemy to be fought, but as a voice to be observed.
In this episode, I sit down with acclaimed writer and poet Kathleen Norris to talk about her deeply personal new book, Rebecca Sue. The book tells the story of her sister Becky - born with brain damage at birth - whose life was marked by both difficulty and transformation, humor and resilience. Kathleen shares what it was like to grow up alongside Becky, how storytelling became a way of honoring her full humanity, and why persistence was necessary to bring this book into the world. Along the way, she reflects on grief, community, the role of faith, and the ways we learn to see people not through labels or limitations, but in the fullness of who they are. This is a conversation about love, loss, and the surprising grace that emerges when we pay attention to every story - even the ones we're tempted to overlook.Kathleen Norris is the award-winning poet, writer, and author of the New York Times bestselling books The Cloister Walk, Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life, Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, The Virgin of Bennington, and several volumes of poetry. Exploring the spiritual life, her work is at once intimate and historical, rich in poetry and meditations, brimming with exasperation and reverence, deeply grounded in both nature and spirit, sometimes funny, and often provocative.Widowed in 2003, Kathleen Norris now divides her time between South Dakota and Honolulu, Hawaii, where she is a member of an Episcopal church. She travels to the mainland regularly to speak to students, medical professionals, social workers, and chaplains at colleges and universities, as well as churches and teaching hospitals. For many years she was the poetry editor of Spirituality & Health magazine. She serves as an editorial advisor for the monthly Give Us This Day from Liturgical Press, and writes for a weekly e-newsletter, Soul Telegram: Movies & Meaning with her friend Irish storyteller Gareth Higgins.Kathleen's Book:Rebecca SueSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Send us a textWhat if the patterns keeping you stuck aren't even yours to begin with? From our earliest moments, our minds absorb everything around us like wet cement—every word, every glance, every reaction forming the foundation of how we see ourselves and the world. The most profound revelation in understanding our patterns is recognizing that many weren't chosen but inherited. Your parents passed down what they knew, having received the same from their parents, creating an unbroken chain stretching back generations. Nobody consciously hands down their wounds, yet we find ourselves living out scripts written long before we could write our names. These invisible patterns show up everywhere—in relationships that keep ending the same way, in money behaviors that sabotage stability, in the masks we wear believing they're our true identity.Breaking free begins with awareness. That relationship dynamic that feels so familiar? It's mirroring what you learned about love as a child. That self-sabotage that keeps happening? It's an old protection strategy that's outlived its usefulness. The transformation happens when you turn toward what you've been avoiding—your shadows, your inner child, your authentic self beneath the programming. Through reparenting, you can give yourself what you always needed but never received. And the miracle is that when you heal yourself, you don't just change your life—you break patterns that might otherwise continue for generations.Ready to pick up the pen and rewrite your story? Listen now to discover how to recognize the patterns running your life and finally break free. Subscribe for weekly insights that will transform how you see yourself and your potential. It responds only to who you decide you are in this moment. And that decision - that single, powerful, reality-bending decision - requires no one's approval but your own.
