Davon Eldemire grew up in the hood in Bridgeport, Connecticut with no father in the picture, raised by his mom and sisters as the only boy in the house. He had a passion for basketball but eventually got consumed by the street life, giving up his dream. That path led to a robbery where he shot someone and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. In this interview, Davon opens up about what it was like growing up without a father, how the streets pulled him in, and the moment that changed everything and landed him in prison. He shares what the years behind bars taught him about life, the mindset shift that turned his sentence into an opportunity, and how he is now using his experience to mentor the youth and keep them from going down the same path. #RaisedInTheHood #PrisonStories #LockedInPodcast #StreetLife #TrueCrimePodcast #PrisonLife #RedemptionStory #lifeafterprison Thank you to BLUECHEW & PRIZEPICKS for sponsoring this episode: BlueChew: Visit https://bluechew.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout to get your first month of BlueChew FREE & pay five bucks for shipping. In this episode I sit down with Andrew and Kara Root to talk about their new book, A Pilgrimage Into Letting Go. Written out of their journey walking St. Cuthbert's Way with their children, the book reflects on parenting, pastoring, and the hard but necessary work of releasing control. Together we explore why modern life pushes us to manage every detail, how uncontrollability can actually be a gift, and what it looks like to see parenting as a pilgrimage. Along the way, we talk about prayer as listening, the difference between being a tourist and a pilgrim, and the ways God encounters us when we surrender to presence. This is a conversation about trust, family, and faith that invites us to walk with open hands and open hearts.Andrew Root is the Carrie Olson Baalson Professor of Youth and Family Ministry at Luther Seminary, USA. He writes and researches in areas of theology, ministry, culture and younger generations. His most recent books are Evangelism in an Age of Despair (Baker, 2025), The Church in an Age of Secular Mysticisms (Baker, 2023), Churches and the Crisis of Decline (Baker, 2022), The Congregation in a Secular Age (Baker, 2021), and The Pastor in a Secular Age: Ministry to People Who No Longer Need God (Baker, 2019). In addition, he serves as theologian in residence for Youthfront. Rev. Kara K. Root is the author of The Deepest Belonging (2021) and Receiving This Life: (2023). Pastor of Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN, a Christian community that shapes its life around worship, hospitality and Sabbath rest, she is a trained Spiritual Director and Certified Educator in the PCUSA. Being mom to two intriguing teenagers (and a sweet dog), and wife and proofreader to a wily theologian, spices up her vocational calling and keeps her fully immersed in life. She has written for Sparkhouse, Working Preacher, Christian Century, Christianity Today, Faith and Leadership, Patheos and more. Kara leads retreats and workshops on sabbath rest, prayer practices, and church leadership and transformation. In this deeply reflective episode, hosts Mike and Mark unpack Joseph Nguyen's powerful insights from Don't Believe Everything You Think. Together, they explore how our relationship with thought directly shapes our inner peace, emotions, and even our identity. With a carefully curated set of clips and commentary, this episode invites listeners to step outside their minds and reconnect with who they truly are beneath all the noise.Key Concepts & Insights:Thoughts are not reality – They only have power when we believe them.Intention drives emotion – What you seek emotionally is a mirror of what you believe you need.High-stakes pragmatism – When the pressure's on, we need tools to pause, not react.Your true self is always present – The world nudges us gently (or forcefully) back to now.Episode Clip Guide:INTRO: "Thoughts Are Harmless Until You Believe Them" (30s)Joseph Nguyen opens the show with a grounding insight: thoughts themselves are neutral, but the moment we take them as truth, they begin to shape our emotional and mental state. Mike and Mark reflect on how this concept redefines our inner critic—not as an enemy to be fought, but as a voice to be observed.
In this episode, I sit down with acclaimed writer and poet Kathleen Norris to talk about her deeply personal new book, Rebecca Sue. The book tells the story of her sister Becky - born with brain damage at birth - whose life was marked by both difficulty and transformation, humor and resilience. Kathleen shares what it was like to grow up alongside Becky, how storytelling became a way of honoring her full humanity, and why persistence was necessary to bring this book into the world. Along the way, she reflects on grief, community, the role of faith, and the ways we learn to see people not through labels or limitations, but in the fullness of who they are. This is a conversation about love, loss, and the surprising grace that emerges when we pay attention to every story - even the ones we're tempted to overlook.Kathleen Norris is the award-winning poet, writer, and author of the New York Times bestselling books The Cloister Walk, Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life, Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, The Virgin of Bennington, and several volumes of poetry. Exploring the spiritual life, her work is at once intimate and historical, rich in poetry and meditations, brimming with exasperation and reverence, deeply grounded in both nature and spirit, sometimes funny, and often provocative.Widowed in 2003, Kathleen Norris now divides her time between South Dakota and Honolulu, Hawaii, where she is a member of an Episcopal church. She travels to the mainland regularly to speak to students, medical professionals, social workers, and chaplains at colleges and universities, as well as churches and teaching hospitals. For many years she was the poetry editor of Spirituality & Health magazine. She serves as an editorial advisor for the monthly Give Us This Day from Liturgical Press, and writes for a weekly e-newsletter, Soul Telegram: Movies & Meaning with her friend Irish storyteller Gareth Higgins.Kathleen's Book:Rebecca SueSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Send us a textWhat if the patterns keeping you stuck aren't even yours to begin with? From our earliest moments, our minds absorb everything around us like wet cement—every word, every glance, every reaction forming the foundation of how we see ourselves and the world. The most profound revelation in understanding our patterns is recognizing that many weren't chosen but inherited. Your parents passed down what they knew, having received the same from their parents, creating an unbroken chain stretching back generations. Nobody consciously hands down their wounds, yet we find ourselves living out scripts written long before we could write our names. These invisible patterns show up everywhere—in relationships that keep ending the same way, in money behaviors that sabotage stability, in the masks we wear believing they're our true identity.Breaking free begins with awareness. That relationship dynamic that feels so familiar? It's mirroring what you learned about love as a child. That self-sabotage that keeps happening? It's an old protection strategy that's outlived its usefulness. The transformation happens when you turn toward what you've been avoiding—your shadows, your inner child, your authentic self beneath the programming. Through reparenting, you can give yourself what you always needed but never received. And the miracle is that when you heal yourself, you don't just change your life—you break patterns that might otherwise continue for generations.Ready to pick up the pen and rewrite your story? Listen now to discover how to recognize the patterns running your life and finally break free. Subscribe for weekly insights that will transform how you see yourself and your potential. In this episode, Cindy Esliger talks about the invisible barrier of our own thinking that can be in the way of progressing in our careers. Our brains are wired for self-preservation, not bold career leaps, so even though we say we want impact or recognition, we are likely being steered away from risk and discomfort by our thoughts. So what do we do? How do we identify this kind of thinking and challenge those patterns? Cindy describes what the self-preservation thinking looks like, how to develop our self-awareness, and ways to start to take risks in our careers. When we understand that our brains are primarily wired for survival, we can we can start to see how staying safe can often also mean staying stuck. Safe avoids discomfort, keeps us playing small, and does not like making others uncomfortable. Our self-preservation can show up as roadblocks like perfectionism or overthinking. Cindy urges us to get honest about both our strengths and struggles so we can begin dismantling the barriers unconsciously holding us back. Once we identify what we're struggling with, Cindy offers the follow-up question of, “What's standing in the way of us working on them?” Self-awareness is not self-blame. We aren't responsible for every roadblock in our way. But self-awareness lets us take back control so we can empower ourselves by working with both our brilliance and blind spots. Cindy shares some steps to take. Describe ourselves with five words. Then ask what five words would friends or family choose for us. This outside perspective is key to a balanced view of ourselves. When we can identify where we're holding back, we learn to let discomfort shape us into something greater. We can step out of the safe thinking and into something challenging. The person you were five minutes ago is already gone. Dead. Replaced ten billion times over by new cells, new thoughts, new electrical impulses firing through your neural pathways. Yet here you are, still playing the same character, still wearing the same invisible costume of limitation you put on this morning when you remembered who you're supposed to be.But supposed to be according to who? Every genius, every leader, every revolutionary who ever changed the world started exactly where you are - as potential wearing a disguise. Einstein was a patent clerk. Oprah was born into poverty. Tesla was dismissed as crazy. They weren't special. They just stopped asking permission to become who they really were. Your potential isn't hiding. It's not waiting for you to find it. It's screaming at you through every desire, every dream, every moment of dissatisfaction with the role you're playing. That restlessness you feel? That's not failure. That's your unlimited self rattling the cage of who you've settled for being. The universe doesn't care about your resume. It doesn't check your credentials. It responds only to who you decide you are in this moment. And that decision - that single, powerful, reality-bending decision - requires no one's approval but your own.
What if the final stages of yoga aren't about flexibility—but inner mastery? In this episode, I dive deep into Book 3 of the Yoga Sutras, where Patanjali explores the advanced limbs of yoga—Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi—and how their fusion, called Samyama, unlocks not just insight, but mystical abilities (siddhis). There's something about music that cuts deeper than words alone. A single lyric, a familiar melody, or even the rhythm of a beat can stir memories we thought were long forgotten and awaken parts of ourselves we may have buried. It reminds us of who we were before the chaos, before the pain, before substances clouded our vision. Pursuing our favorite hobbies before substance use can be a lifeline back to our core, a way of reclaiming the truest version of ourselves. Listen in as our guest this week shares how he turned his lifelong passion into purpose and found a way back home to himself. Skyler Ray was born on November 28, 1990, in San Jose, California. He grew up in foster homes and spent multiple years homeless—going from being locked up to sleeping on the sidewalks of downtown Portland. His music is deeply rooted in his life experiences, including addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. He is a firm believer in spreading hope and giving back to the community he once helped destroy. Since being released from prison on November 30, 2018, Skyler has refocused on his music and is determined to share his message with the world. He continues to live in Portland, Oregon, and remains clean and sober. In this conversation, Jamie Demeris and Skyler Ray discuss what it really takes to rebuild a life after addiction. Together, they explore the mindset shifts that turn relapse into resilience, why consistency and small steps matter more than giant leaps, and how reconnecting with your passions can anchor you in sobriety. Skyler shares how music became both his therapy and his message, and why vulnerability and self-respect are the foundation of lasting recovery. Whether you're in recovery, supporting a loved one, or just searching for hope, this conversation will remind you that transformation is always possible. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on a question that landed in my DMs: How do I plan to incorporate my shamanic training into my hypnosis work in the future? The short answer: I already do. The deeper answer? That's what this episode is all about. Many people think of the subconscious as just a storage bin for beliefs and programs. But this mindset is limited. The subconscious is far more—it's a convergence zone where identity, neuroscience, and consciousness meet. And when you bring shamanic principles into ethical, client-led hypnosis, you're no longer just clearing blocks... you're helping someone remember who they truly are.

Send us a textWhat are you truly hungry for? That's the question that drives this deeply introspective exploration of how our brains become trapped in cycles of avoidance and momentary pleasure. Your brain doesn't distinguish between sources of dopamine—whether from sugar, alcohol, or avoiding difficult sales conversations. The glass of wine wasn't about the taste; it was about not feeling lonely. The second plate wasn't about hunger; it was about silencing shame. Avoiding asking for the sale wasn't about the client; it was about protecting yourself from rejection. When you name what you're truly avoiding, these cravings begin to lose their power.Comfort feels safe, but functions like a barbed wire cage. It promises protection while imprisoning you in patterns that steal your future happiness. The late-night cupcake gives thirty seconds of pleasure but hours of regret. The "one more drink" becomes a cycle that robs you of clarity. The avoidance of asking for the sale feels temporarily safe, but it deprives you of results. These small choices you avoid today become your regrets tomorrow.Breaking free requires recognizing that pain isn't punishment—it's a doorway to growth. The discomfort of withdrawals, whether from substances or the anxiety of asking for a sale, signals transformation. Structure becomes your lifeline, providing the framework for sustainable change. Whether through recovery meetings or following sales processes, freedom isn't found in chaos but built through consistent structure. Every morning presents a choice: numb or grow, drink or recover, hide or ask for the sale. If you can survive addiction, you can survive discomfort. If you can survive discomfort, you can win the sale. And if you can win the sale, you can build the life you've been starving for. When that craving comes, don't feed the fear—feed your freedom.Ready to break free from your dopamine traps? Every single person walking this earth carries within them infinite potential - a boundless capacity for growth, achievement, and transformation that knows no limits. Your brain contains approximately 86 billion neurons, each capable of forming thousands of connections with other neurons. The number of possible neural pathways in your mind exceeds the number of atoms in the observable universe. You carry within your head more potential combinations and possibilities than exist in all of space. Where you came from, what happened to you, or what you've failed at before doesn't determine what you're capable of achieving. Your potential exists independent of your history. Very choice you make branches into multiple possibilities. Every skill you develop opens new doors. Every person you meet could be a connection to opportunities you never imagined. Every experience you have adds to your unique perspective and capabilities.
I'm sharing a deeply personal decision today! I'm going gray and stepping away from coloring my hair after 15+ years.
