On this week's podcast, we hear all about the fascinating world of dulcimers with Joellen Lapidus, the builder behind the dulcimer used on Joni Mitchell's Blue album. Joellen has also sold instruments to David Crosby, Garth Hudson, Jackson Browne, and even Harry Styles. https://www.lapidusmusic.com/home During our chat, we hear about how an entire generation of 1960s dulcimer makers based their design on a Richard Farina album cover as their blueprint (and how varied the results were); the early days of California's Esalen Institute and its influence on Joellen; the evolution of the instrument (from cardboard construction to high-end); and so much more. It's a revelatory conversation about a distinctly American instrument. As Joellen puts it, “The dulcimer is an untamed animal.” This week's show is sponsored by: Stringjoy Strings: https://stringjoy.com (Use the code FRETBOARD to save 10% off your first order) Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar: https://mmguitarbar.com Peghead Nation: https://www.pegheadnation.com (Get your first month free or $20 off any annual subscription with the promo code FRETBOARD at checkout). https://fretboardsummit.org/ https://www.fretboardjournal.com
Today, we're opening the vaults to share a rare and remarkable recording from Esalen's rich historical archive: a 1967 lecture and live demonstration by none other than Dr. Ida Rolf, the pioneering founder of Structural Integration—more commonly known today as Rolfing. But what is Rolfing? Often described as intense (and sometimes even painful), Rolfing is a powerful form of bodywork that focuses on the manipulation and realignment of connective tissue—fascia—to promote structural balance and physical freedom. Ida Rolf believed that by methodically reorganizing the body's structure in gravity, not only could chronic pain and postural issues be resolved, but profound emotional and psychological healing could also occur. This archival gem features Dr. Rolf in her element—lecturing with intellectual precision, delivering her insights with wit and candor, and guiding a live demo with such vivid specificity that, even without visuals, you feel transported into the room beside her. It's a masterclass in both bodywork and presence. A little backstory: Ida Rolf first came to Esalen in the 1960s at the invitation of famed Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, who would become one of her earliest champions. According to The Upstart Spring, Rolf worked on Perls daily for a week. On the seventh day, during a neck session, he passed out—briefly. When he came to, he recounted a deeply buried trauma: a therapist twisting his neck under anesthesia decades earlier. The memory, and its accompanying tension, had haunted him for years. He credited Rolf's work with helping to release it. After that, Perls became an ardent supporter of Rolfing, and Ida returned to Esalen again and again. Esalen Institute would become the West Coast hub for her method, just as it had for Gestalt therapy. This episode is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Rolf in her own voice, offering not just a window into the origins of Rolfing, but a taste of the charisma, intellect, and force of will that helped her change the way we think about the body, healing, and human potential.

Today's disagreement is on The Telepathy Tapes, Autism, and the Paranormal. If you're not familiar, The Telepathy Tapes is a cultural phenomenon and podcast that launched in Fall 2024. By early January, it was the number one podcast in the country. Today, it's still in the top ten. Its core thesis is quite provocative: that there are non-verbal autistic young people who possess telepathic powers and are able to read the minds of their parents and teachers. In this episode, we use The Telepathy Tapes as a springboard to ask some big questions about science, skepticism, and the nature of truth. Is telepathy real? How should we evaluate the claims in the podcast? Do these claims adversely affect–even harm–the autistic young people being celebrated? To have this conversation, we've brought together a journalist and a religious scholar with very different approaches to understanding the truth.Zaid Jilani is a journalist whose work has appeared in The Intercept, News Nation and Alternet. He writes about politics and culture on his Substack The American Saga.Jeffrey Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University and the Associate Director of the Center for Theory and Research at the Esalen Institute. Jeffrey is also the author of thirteen books, including most recently: How to Think Impossibly. Before we get started, a note. In The Telepathy Tapes, the nonverbal autistic young people use a controversial method to communicate with the outside world. It's called “facilitated communication.” There is an adult that helps to facilitate the young person's communication—usually through some form of touch and holding a letterboard that the young person point to. We get into this in-depth on the podcast.Questions or comments about this episode? Email us at podcast@thedisagreement.com or find us on X and Instagram @thedisagreementhq. What does it meant to create a new world? Would you like to escape limited ways of thinking and find your power? Our guests today are executive coach Jim Selman and psychiatrist Dr. Srini Pillay. Together they invite us to create a new mind, so we can create a new world. Jim Selman talks about futuristic thinking and who we have to be as we navigate a changing world. He is the founder of Executive Coaching and author of many books. Dr. Srini Pillay is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who works within the corporate, technology, and government sectors. He is also author of several books. Jim and Srini believe this is the greatest possible time to live. Many of the ways we've been taught to live may not stand up to old beliefs. Why are the problems of the world continuing? How can we shift how we relate? We live in a world of uncertainty and there's been a long tradition of “how” to do things, especially in the self-help world. When you ask “How?” it doesn't give you ways to work in the future. We have had pandemics, wars, and a history of conflict. Jim and Srini decided to study the ways in which successful people don't follow a particular formula. We are being asked to shift our mindsets to come up with different results. Jim moved from management and consulting to executive coaching. He continuously asked why it was so possible to come up with answers, but so challenging to implement them. There is a belief that it's hard to change. This led Jim into the idea of transformation in the 1970s, when he worked with Esalen Institute. He determined that managers tried to control the result, yet in the worlds of art and sports, coaches do not try to control the performance. They don't control the behavior of others. This opened the world of coaching to him, so he learned to work with others to offer results without control. This was an alternative to management, especially in the corporate world. Srini teaches that you don't need to follow the herd. We can look inside for the answers. He talks about the definition of leadership and how it involves “becoming yourself.” A lot of people think there's a way they are “supposed” to be. This involves competence, autonomy, and social relatedness, yet in order to have a sense of purpose, we must be and become ourselves. Jim and Srini explain about their idea of “Existential Confidence” as a way for people to transform. Joining philosophy with neuroscience and psychology can help you to access yourself. Successful people are not mimicking others. They are expressing from the self. Who do we need to be to create change? They talk about confidence, commitment, and possibilities. Ordinary confidence is based on our experience. We've either done it or seen examples of it. We accept that the world is changing at an extraordinary rate. Our grounding and realities are breaking down. Common sense is not so common or reliable. We need to reinvent our relationship to what's going on. We don't have maps to get there. This is Existential Confidence. It's a confidence that rises within us, that is absolute self-trust. People may tell us it's impossible, but we know we can undertake what needs to be done. It's the kind of confidence that allows you to enjoy the journey and not constantly question. It's what you need if you are going to create or co-create the future. If it's truly going to be a future that works for most all of us, it's going to require that level of Existential Confidence. It encompasses the wholeness of who we are as human beings. It's our relationship to the future. Jim and Srini deeply discuss that is possible to pivot and create possibilities. You can change your identify from being a follower to being a creative leader. You no longer copy others. You develop your own way. We can create the reality we want to see. We can create the future. This interview was originally taped in August of 2020, and we air this show in honor of Jim Selman who passed away recently. Jim was an executive coach and pioneer in the field of personal and organizational transformation. He is the author of numerous books including “Leadership” and “Living in a Real-Time World: 6 Capabilities to Prepare Us for an Unimaginable Future.” Info: jimselman.com and drsrinipillay.com.

Do you often have conflicts with your partner? Would you like to learn to be happier in your relationships? Lisa continues the conversation today with author and relationship expert Linda Bloom, L.C.S.W., who is a psychotherapist and marriage counselor. Linda explains how there's an “art” to fighting and even in the greatest, happiest relationships, arguments can arise. Yet, she believes most challenges and problems can be worked out. You can use your relationship for the highest growth. From what Linda and her husband, Charlie Bloom, also a therapist and marriage counselor have reported, only about 10% of partnerships are in “Super Marriages.” This is an equal relationship which involves being compassionate and passionate, utilizing each other's strengths, and compensating for one another's weaknesses. Individually people have done the work to uplevel themselves and their understanding, thereby upleveling the relationship itself. Linda explains that it takes passion and commitment to be a highly emotionally intelligent person. By enrolling their partner, this leads to an immensely successful relationship. She and her husband decided to interview more than 50 very happy couples. The main trait they had in common was communication. They have “Super Marriages” because they are “Super Communicators.” They are in touch with their feelings and brave enough to express them. They learn how to be together, while keeping their individuality. They have so many clients who did not have good relationship role models. Luckily this is something that can be learned. Every couple can have their own experience, based on their own set of ethics and values. Between the demands of dual careers, raising children, and helping aging parents, you must make your relationship your priority. Linda suggests having date nights, checking in with yourself and partner every day, and scheduling romantic getaways at various times of the year, not just for birthdays and anniversaries. Prioritize the well-being of your relationship, and you can become a stronger working team, better able to handle life's stressors. Linda also discusses relationships with family members who may have differing opinions, politically and otherwise. Linda suggests setting boundaries and letting them know you do not care to discuss the subject if you know it will lead to an argument. If they are a bit more open, then you listen and show respect to their point of view. Maybe they will reciprocate and show interest. It is possible that understanding can be forged, even if you do not agree with one another. Curiosity and wonder allow for differences to peacefully co-exist. It needs to be learned from the ground up. If you can create loving, trusting behavior in your own family, you can inspire those around you and thereby accelerate healing with powerful impact. Linda and Charlie Bloom are co-authors of several widely acclaimed books including, “101 Things I Wish I Knew When I Got Married: Simple Lessons to Make Love Last,” which has sold more than 100,000 copies, and “Secrets of Great Marriages: Real Truths from Real Couples About Lasting Love, Happily Ever After and Thirty-nine Other Myths about Love,” She offers educational and counseling services to individuals, couples, and organizations. Do you often fight with your partner? Do you find it hard to speak your truth in relationships? Today's guest is author and relationship expert Linda Bloom, L.C.S.W., who is a psychotherapist and marriage counselor. Linda talks about how there's an “art” to fighting. Even in the greatest, happiest relationships, conflict can arise. Most challenges and problems can be worked out. If we are vulnerable, we see that underneath the anger and resentment, there's usually disconnection and fear. We can feel misunderstood and lonely but if we open up and express our vulnerability, it invites connection. Linda discusses how to set boundaries and take responsibility for our feelings. She talks about how opposites can attract as each brings different traits to the table. We all have golden light, but dark shadows as well. We can learn from each other and embrace one another's strengths. She also talks about how people search for the “perfect partner.” This can actually be a way to protect oneself, as no one is perfect, but we can look at the good in others. We can practice our skills, and even if relationships don't last, we can still move forward by taking a risk on someone and looking for kindness. Sometimes people absolutely won't agree on certain important aspects. Perhaps there are fights involving one who spends money and one who saves money. If you listen to each other patiently, and with curiosity and wonder, much can be learned and resolved. It's a matter of finding common ground. It doesn't have to be a dealbreaker. Addictions may be a dealbreaker. It's not the addiction itself; it's if the person doesn't want to find help. If people really listen to each other with understanding and respect, needs can be met. Linda also talks about how infidelity doesn't always have to be a dealbreaker. It may be a one-time mistake, and the person may have learned a lesson. It IS possible to forgive. Fears will come up and it will take time. It's a matter of trust and it may be possible to work it out. Being in a relationship takes a lot of work. It's about being conscious. Linda discusses modern families and how there may be completely unequal levels of income. It's important to talk about and get to the roots underneath the discomfort. If couples lean into the challenge, it can be a very fruitful conversation of balance. This is especially prevalent in the United States where people are so focused on money. It is possible to be a contribution, even if finances are unequal. The biggest fights occur when people don't feel the depth of love. Success in the US is defined by money, status, and finances. Linda's definition of success includes how many loving relationships we have in our lives. If you make it the priority, you won't suffer by feeling like you are lacking love. When you get triggered, and you are angry, it's important to take a few breaths. Take a break when you are in a fight. Breath and settle down. Think about what's hurting you and scaring you. That's a helpful, connecting conversation. By doing this, you can feel heard. That's loving behavior. Having a safe word also helps. When you take a “time out,” do not stomp off and slam the door. That's a message saying your partner is impossible. It's important to both agree ahead of time that this is the best way to calm down and compose yourself. Come back with the intention to learn and understand. This respectful attitude builds back the trust. Linda and her husband, Charlie Bloom, are co-authors of several widely acclaimed books including, “101 Things I Wish I Knew When I Got Married: Simple Lessons to Make Love Last,” which has sold more than 100,000 copies, and “Secrets of Great Marriages: Real Truths from Real Couples About Lasting Love, Happily Ever After and Thirty-nine Other Myths about Love,” She offers educational and counseling services to individuals, couples, and organizations. A new paradigm for embodied healing in a unique, experiential, therapeutic process in which expressive movement, guided imagery, ritual, music, and creative expression work together. In Embody, Toni Bergins, the founder and creator of JourneyDance, an internationally renowned dance movement program, shares with readers a powerful way to address trauma mindfully so people can confront it, heal, and grow to love themselves unconditionally, just as they are. Embody is a dynamic, conscious practice that can help people release what no longer serves them and shows them how to stop stuffing/numbing the pain and start feeling, stop over-thinking/limiting, and get moving! Embodiment is the new buzzword in personal transformation, but, most often, it is connected to static practices like breathwork and meditation. For Toni Bergins, embodiment is best achieved through active movement, and has created a practice where people literally get out of their heads and into their bodies! Her program is a trauma-informed one that offers a new promise: leading readers through deep, personal work but making it feel like play. In this book, she turns the heaviness of processing pain and past trauma into an expressive art aligned with the most recent research. Specifically, trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk, writes in his bestselling The Body Keeps the Score, “In order to overcome trauma, people need to feel safe enough to open up their hearts and minds to others and become engaged with new possibilities. This can be done if trauma survivors are helped to confront and confess the reality of what has happened and are helped to feel safe again. In many cultures this involves communal rhythmical activities, such as dancing…” And that is Toni Bergins' mission and method: to help readers move into a new story for their lives. Embody features Toni's prescription for a comprehensive healing journey, comprised of five core elements: · Music, to open the doorways of impulse, imagination, creativity and healing to change mood and awareness; · Movement, to enhance presence and confidence, and release old patterns and traumas; · Mystical Inquiry, where imagery and creative visualization exercises are used to guide readers into an alchemic and shamanic state to investigate past hurts, and learn to trust their instincts; · Prayers and Invocations, to raise energetic vibrations to a positive place with powerful affirmations; and · Journaling, with writing prompts to process inner self-awareness learned on the dance floor or through any of the other Embody elements. In this enlightening episode we connect with Ariel Giarretto, an internationally known body-oriented trauma therapist and Somatic Sex Educator. Ariel's initial intrigue with the body's physiology began during her work as a birth doula, and deepened during her experiences at the Esalen Institute and her extensive study with Somatic Experiencing (SE) pioneer Peter Levine - which led to her later becoming a faculty member. As co-developer of 'The Full Embodiment Model' she offers transformative insights for people wanting to heal from the effects of sexuality/gender trauma, sexual abuse and disembodiment. We discuss the importance of reconnecting with the body and the complex issues of navigating sexual trauma therapeutically. Exploring techniques to navigate these challenges, Ariel highlights the importance of curiosity, presence, and acceptance of bodily sensations, presenting a refreshing approach to embodiment. She shares her experience living in San Francisco with sex-positive communities and her studies in Sexology, along with her work and efforts in addressing intergenerational trauma, to help individuals reshape their relationship with pleasure and intimacy. We also touch upon how different attachment styles impact our intimacy and sexuality and why tantric practices can be problematic if sexual trauma is not addressed first. Ariel examines the transformative potential of creating new, 'missing' experiences as part of the healing journey, and how new neural pathways can be fostered. Join us for insights and an invaluable resource for those looking to deepen their understanding of love and intimacy. Ariel Giarretto, LMFT, SEP, CMT, CSB is a trauma specialist with a passion to support people of all cultures and ages in how to find ease and pleasure in their bodies, increase intimacy, and find freedom from the grip of trauma. Probably the most inspired and provocative conversation I've ever had on the nature of time and human creativity.Joining me for this trialogue are Eric Wargo, author of From Nowhere: Artists, Writers, and the Precognitive Imagination (previously on FF episodes 117 and 171), and J.F. Martel, author of Reclaiming Art in The Age of Artifice and co-host (with Phil Ford) of Weird Studies podcast (previously on FF episodes 18, 71, 126, and 214). Our discussion centers on the concept of precognition — the ability to perceive future events — as the mechanism of all human creative activity. Both Eric and J.F. argue that art, like shamanistic practices, acts as a means of accessing and expressing precognitive experiences, often manifesting as seemingly coincidental events or uncanny correspondences between art and reality. We talk about the role of trauma and dissociation in stimulating creative breakthroughs — why there seems to be a direct biological and psychological link between suffering, displacement, and the discovery of radical new insights and modes of being. Can we create without destroying, or are rupture and connection one thing? We also examine how emerging media through the ages have shaped our experience of time. Starting with the earliest Paleolithic artifacts and the role of cave art in facilitating or encoding ecstatic experience, we trace the evolution of art through to how the development “the cut” in modern cinema led to new ideas of causality. Each new medium provides novel ways of thinking about leaps across space and time, and their study offers new points of entry into a unifying philosophy of rupture and discontinuity.Lastly, we explore some of my own most potent and disquieting precognitive experiences in light of Eric's argument that the UFO phenomenon may actually be the braided precognitive experiences of future human beings and symbiotic artificial intelligences — a thesis that sheds new light on everything from the lives and work of Philip K. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, CTTC Director and NARM® Senior Trainer Brad Kammer welcomes Jessica Britt, Training Director of The Diamond Approach, to share wisdom from her decades-long journey of personal healing and professional development. Jessica says that creating more depth in the field requires therapists to do the hard internal work of self-healing. About Jessica Britt: Jessica Britt has been a student of Hamid Ali since 1977 and a teacher since 1985. As training director for the Diamond Approach, she leads ongoing groups in Europe, Canada, and the US. While at Esalen, she was a student within the Native American traditions leading wilderness journeys. Additionally, she studied continuum movement with Emily Conrad. A nurse in the seventies, Jessica specialized in the field of childhood sexual and physical abuse. She continues to practice from a view that includes the whole of the miracle of conscious life. ACESS VIDEO VERSION BELOW, PURE AUDIO ABOVE “Science can explain everything except us”: a joke or a koan? This is the humor of our guest today. Welcome to Season 11, Episode 2 of Thoth-Hermes podcast. Today, Rudolf and Karin interview author Jeffery Kripal. In July, Kripal's latest book “How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else” was released through University of Chicago Press. In this conversation, Professor Kripal and our two hosts wrestle with the foundations of lexicon and concepts underlying contemporary dialogue around Flip-worthy alternative spiritual experiences, and the interaction with religion as an academic subject. This is an excellent conversation to reflect on how we each personally describe our Magic, and why- regardless of alignment for or against the definitions ventured. Jeffrey Kripal entered formal study of religion in the 1980s, after a Catholic upbringing; he centered on exploring comparative mystical literature. Kripal ultimately gained a home as a historian of comparative religions, spending time at Esalen Institute in California while teaching at Rice University in Texas. Noticing the “flatland” quality of religious scholarship, Kripal moved towards authorship around transcendent and alternative expressions of human spirituality. Soaked in the humanities, Kripal articulates a longstanding interest in cultivating engagement between the study of anomalous or transcendent experience and pure sciences, in this STEM-centered culture. Kripal celebrates that “the human being overflows itself” as “embodied consciousness” and is completely clear: “I am pro-science”. He asserts this while fearlessly naming the Shadow of science: global warming, nuclear armament, and other successful, perilous products of science. And put him down as an “AI skeptic”. Supernatural… superhuman… transhuman… posthuman… paranormal… occult… magic. These are all English-language terms used in the attempt to describe the transcendent, mysterious, edgy aspects of our capacity as spiritual beings. Along the way, Kripal challenges Science-centered academics to being to name their own anomalous experiences before the safety of retirement, and further for thinkers in general to move away from the habit of explaining away those events by returning to previously-disowned religious narratives. Do we speak of “angels” or “entities” when we encounter one? And why? Kripal is clear that he is at heart a “comparativist” and thereby intends to open people up to alternatives from default religious worldviews, while not necessarily advocating any given one as a “better” alternative. This he includes as a larger part of his concepts of “thinking impossibly” and “thinking-with” other authentic seekers. In exploring vocabulary, Kripal himself leans towards “superhumanism” terminology, offering the possibility that actual “humanist” worldview may be best found there. He asserts that ideas come from superhuman encounter, where we contact a consciousness that exceeds (but gifts) our individual capacity. Kripal explicitly acknowledges critical theory, specifically naming examples of his view of its validity, and then offers that religion's suppression of authentic spiritual experience may be considered an additional vein. In cocreation with Karin, our guest also challenge's academic science's constraint of repeatability: “you don't go to the North Pole to look at zebras”. Indeed. Please enjoy this episode and familiarize yourself with Professor Kripal's wide writings. In this episode, we're joined by the legendary John Densmore, the rhythmic force behind one of the most iconic bands in rock history, The Doors. From his early days as a young musician in Southern California, John has always been captivated by the primal call of the drum—a heartbeat that transcends time and culture. John's journey with The Doors, from their groundbreaking debut album in 1967 to Jim Morrison's untimely passing in 1971, cemented his place in music history. His dynamic approach to drumming, influenced by his love of jazz and global rhythms, set the band apart and helped define their dark, sonically diverse sound. After Morrison's death, John continued to explore new musical territories, from reggae with The Butts Band to jazz fusion with Tribaljazz.Beyond music, John is also an accomplished writer and has authored several books, including the best-seller Riders on the Storm: My Life With Jim Morrison and The Doors. His latest work, The Seekers: Meetings With Remarkable Musicians, reflects his enduring curiosity and desire to learn from the artists who have influenced him throughout his life. One of those influencers was Joseph Campbell, with whom John studied at the Esalen Institute and the Jung center. Campbell's teachings had a profound impact on John's artistic philosophy, and he dedicated a chapter to Campbell in The Seekers. In this conversation we discuss his relationship with Joseph Campbell, and explore his deep connections to music, spirituality, and the creative process that has fueled his remarkable career.Learn more about John: https://www.johndensmore.com/ For more information on the MythMaker Podcast Network and Joseph Campbell, visit JCF.org. Today, I interview Randall Alifano who grew up in a loud, talkative Italian family where everyone spoke, but no one really listened. Like many of us, Randall often felt unheard and disconnected, surrounded by people but without real understanding. This early experience of being silenced planted the seed for his deep curiosity about human connection and the power of listening. As he grew older, Randall began asking deeper questions, eager to understand the emotions behind people's words. His breakthrough came when he started working with individuals who had experienced profound trauma. He quickly realized that what people needed most wasn't advice or diagnosis, but someone to truly hear them. His ability to listen with full presence became the foundation of his healing work.Randall's approach to listening goes beyond the surface, allowing others to face their fears, feel understood, and reclaim their voice. He now teaches people how to connect with themselves and others through deep, compassionate listening, transforming their relationships and personal growth. His work has helped countless individuals move through their struggles by creating a safe space where they can be fully heard.__________________Randall Alifano, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and ordained minister with over 40 years of experience integrating psychology and spirituality into his private practice. Leah Song is one half of the musical duo Rising Appalachia - alongside her sister Chloe, they are an internationally touring folk ensemble steeped in the soul of the South that blends Americana music with lyrics, rhythm and poetry to form a unique sound influenced by a blend of Appalachian, Irish, Latin and world roots music. Leah was at Esalen Institute for a week this summer to dance and make music with Lucia Horan and Douglas Drummond's 5 Rhythms workshop, and she was kind enough to do a live interview on a Wednesday evening for a rapt audience of more than a hundred lucky souls. She even played several songs. What a gem!
