April Garcia's PivotMe

What if the biggest obstacle standing between you and your next level... is you? In this raw and revealing episode of PivotMe, April Garcia pulls back the curtain on the silent success killer that most high achievers never see coming — self-sabotage. If you've ever wondered why you keep getting in your own way, this episode will hand you the mirror you didn't know you needed. Key Takeaways: Self-Sabotage is the Core Problem: April establishes self-sabotage as the central theme of PivotMe — and for good reason. Until you identify the behaviors quietly undermining your progress, no strategy, system, or hustle will get you where you want to go. Why It's Hard to See in Yourself: It's often easier to spot self-sabotage in others than in ourselves. April explores why our blind spots are so stubbornly... blind — and what it takes to finally see them clearly. Your Success Depends on It: Controlling self-sabotaging behavior isn't a soft skill — it's directly tied to your results. April connects the dots between inner patterns and outer outcomes. Three Flavors of Self-Sabotage: Perfectionism: The pursuit of perfect is often the enemy of done. April unpacks how perfectionism is less about high standards and more about fear — fear of failure, judgment, and being exposed. White Knight Syndrome: Constantly rescuing others from their problems feels noble, but it's often a clever way to avoid your own. April breaks down the allure of being everyone's hero and the cost it carries. Creative Avoidance: This one's sneaky. It looks like productivity — you're busy, you're checking boxes — but you're intentionally steering clear of the high-value tasks that actually move the needle. Awareness is the First Step: You can't change what you can't see. April emphasizes that awareness isn't just helpful — it's the gateway to making a different choice. The Challenge: April closes with a direct call to action: identify your personal flavor of self-sabotage and build a plan to break the pattern. You're not stuck. You're just choosing — and you can choose differently. Notable Quotes: "Self-sabotage doesn't announce itself. It disguises itself as perfectionism, helpfulness, and busyness." — April Garcia "Awareness without action is just entertainment. See it, own it, change it." — April Garcia Actionable Items: Honestly audit your week — where did you stall, over-perfect, rescue someone, or stay "busy" to avoid something important? Identify which of the three forms of self-sabotage shows up most in your life: perfectionism, white knighting, or creative avoidance. Name one high-value task you've been avoiding and schedule it as your first priority tomorrow. Share your self-sabotage pattern with one trusted person who will hold you accountable. Write down what your life looks like if you stop self-sabotaging for 90 days — and read it every morning. ---------------- Ready to take this work beyond the podcast? When I was a teenager, I was getting into a bit of trouble and had a strong desire to attend a different school. Much later in life, I discovered that I had actually been accepted into that school, but my mother had held the acceptance letter back from me. Instead, she enrolled me in a computer science and programming program. What that experience gave me was something incredibly valuable — it taught me how to think, plan, formulate ideas, recognize patterns, and write code. At the time, it wasn't very common for women to have a background in computer programming, but it became part of my foundation. Even though I later realized that programming itself wasn't the path I wanted to pursue, the way it trained my mind has shaped me for the rest of my life. Now we live in a world where artificial intelligence is everywhere. There's new AI news and innovation almost every day, and at the core of it all is code. But underneath that technology are humans. We are physical beings. We are emotional beings. We are mental beings. We are spiritual beings. We are relational beings. And we are financial beings. Financial freedom is important, but without taking care of the other areas — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational — it's very difficult to experience true rewards in the financial area. I often think about these aspects of life the way a programmer thinks about code. Each of us has a unique code — a kind of life formula — created through family, friends, environment, history, trauma, ideas, and the information we absorb every day. All of those influences create patterns that shape how we behave, achieve, and receive. Interestingly, many people focus heavily on achieving but struggle with receiving. In programming, when something doesn't work, you debug the code. You find the issue and correct it. Life works the same way. --- Follow & Let's Get in Touch! What if the biggest obstacle standing between you and the things you want in life isn’t your effort, your discipline, or even your circumstances? What if it’s the beliefs you didn’t realise you were holding. In Part 1 of a two-part conversation, I sit down with behavioural scientist and bestselling author Nir Eyal to unpack how our hidden beliefs shape what we see, how we feel, and what we do. Nir spent six years researching his latest book Beyond Belief, exploring the science behind how beliefs influence our behaviour and how we can change the ones that are quietly limiting us. We dive into why rumination feels productive but actually keeps us stuck, why venting about people can reinforce the very stories that make us miserable, and a practical tool called a reality log that helps you see situations more clearly. Nir also shares a powerful technique for questioning beliefs that are causing suffering, using a surprisingly relatable story about a birthday gift for his mum that didn’t go quite as planned. Nir and I discuss: The difference between facts, faith, and beliefs and why beliefs are open to change Why many of our most important life decisions come down to beliefs rather than facts How rumination feels like problem solving but often reinforces limiting beliefs The surprisingly effective technique of scheduling “worry time” How our beliefs shape what we literally perceive in the world Why venting about people can strengthen negative assumptions rather than resolve them How a reality log can help you challenge distorted perceptions A four question technique to examine beliefs that are causing suffering How collecting a “portfolio of perspectives” can help you reduce emotional reactivity Key quotes “Beliefs are tools, not truths.” “We don’t see the world as it is. We see a simulation of the world shaped by what we already believe.” Connect with Nir Eyal on Instagram, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn and his website and check out his latest book Beyond Belief. When we fail to make desired progress in life, most of us put the blame on physical and environmental limits. But my guest says that what's really holding people back is what's in their heads.Nir Eyal is the author of Beyond Belief: The Science-Backed Way to Stop Limiting Yourself and Achieve Breakthrough Results. Today on the show, he argues that much of how we think about ourselves, our abilities, and what's possible becomes our reality, and that getting what we want in life often comes down to changing how we perceive it. Drawing on research in neuroscience and psychology, Nir shares the three powers of belief, and how they direct your attention, alter your expectations, shape your sense of agency, and determine whether you stick with hard things long enough to see results. Along the way, he shares ways to identify and challenge the limiting beliefs that can sabotage your goals and relationships.Resources Related to the PodcastNir's previous appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #553 — How to Become IndistractableAoM Article: How Reframing Builds ResilienceAoM podcast episode on William James and pragmatismConnect with Nir EyalNir's websiteThanks to This Week's Podcast SponsorIncogni. Many high achievers wear the identity of being a grinder like a badge of honor. You wake up early. You stay late. You outwork everyone around you. And at first glance, that looks like discipline. But what if the identity of being the grinder quietly becomes more familiar than the identity of being the performer? In this episode, I unpack one of the most subtle traps high performers fall into—the Grinder Identity Trap—and why relentless effort can sometimes become the very thing preventing breakthrough performance. Whether you're an entrepreneur buried in spreadsheets or a golfer grinding endlessly on the range, the same psychological pattern often appears: constant effort without the results to match. The truth is this: Your nervous system is wired for familiarity. And sometimes it would rather maintain a familiar struggle than adapt to an unfamiliar level of success. That's why real breakthroughs require more than strategy, reps, or hard work. They require identity-level change. In this episode, we explore how the grinder identity forms, why it can quietly sabotage your growth, and how to create the psychological and emotional safety required to operate at the next level. In this episode, you'll learn: Why the grinder identity can become a hidden form of self-sabotage How dopamine, control, and familiarity keep high performers stuck Why relentless practice and work eventually produce diminishing returns The role your nervous system plays in resisting higher levels of success How to begin creating psychological safety around breakthrough performance If you've been putting in the work but still feel stuck… This conversation may help you understand why. Your nervous system prioritizes familiarity over progress—even if that familiarity is frustration. Endless reps and effort produce diminishing returns as you approach higher levels of performance. Grinding often provides dopamine, control, and avoidance of deeper emotional discomfort. Breakthrough performance requires identity-level change, not just more strategy or effort. Key Quotes: "Your brain would rather maintain a familiar struggle than adapt to an unfamiliar level of success." "At some point, the grind itself becomes part of your identity." "Strategy creates opportunity, but identity determines whether you can operate at that level." "Expansion isn't only about doing more. It's about being more through doing less." Learn more about Michael Wenderoth, Executive Coach: www.changwenderoth.comMost women have lived as the side dish – supporting everyone else while putting themselves last. When I shared that line with my wife, she didn't hesitate: “That's me.” In this episode of 97% Effective, I speak with Deborah Grayson Riegel — executive coach, leadership communications expert, and co‑creator of TheMeMenu, a new personal growth platform designed for women over 50 who are ready to reclaim agency, imagination, and momentum in their lives. Deb shares how she teamed up with celebrity chef Carla Hall to build something that blends coaching, creativity, and AI — all through the metaphor of cooking and their Six Flavor framework. We discuss what's different for women 50+, how AI can democratize coaching (and where humans still matter most), and what partners can actually do — practically — to support the women they love. I also share what surprised me most in this conversation — including what I learned after asking my own wife what actually helps (hint: “How can I help?” isn't always it). By the end of this episode, you'll see cooking as a powerful lens for work and life. While The ME Menu is designed for women over 50, the key message — navigating obligation and agency — applies to anyone ready to write their next chapter.SHOW NOTESTheMeMenu storyWhy so many women spend decades as the “side dish,” what it means to reclaim main-dish energy – and why that mattersHow Deb connected with Carla Hall, celebrity chef, and why the collaboration clicked so wellWhat TheMeMenu actually is: A way of thinking and being + 6-week self-paced coaching program + An AI-powered “Sous Chef” for spot-coachingWhat makes TheMeMenu unique: Built by women over 50 for women over 50, Carla Hall's “secret sauce”, and a mission to democratize access to coachingWhy Deb sees AI as a complement to human coaching, not a replacementInside the CollaborationDeb, Carla, and Kirsten: three women, three strengthsTheir creative process: cooking vs bakingWhy “nothing works if the raw ingredients aren't good”The importance of creating their “mise en place”Over 100 iterations – and why “there's no such thing as done”Building a product while the technology was still emerging Practical TakeawaysWhat partners, spouses, kids, and friends can most do to support the women in their livesTwo powerful questions to ask – and 1 micro-behavior that mattersWhy “How can I help?' can be taxing – and why it's often better to just make offersThinking in terms of a lifelong conversation, not a one-time check-inLightning Round laser insights: Deb on the hard truth about personal change, the key to collaboration, the power of her summer in Spain, and the focus of her new book, Aim High and Bounce Back: A Successful Woman's Guide to Rethinking and Rising Up from Failure BIO AND LINKSDeborah Grayson Riegel, MSW, PCC is a keynote speaker, leadership communications expert, executive coach, and author. We talk a lot about dreaming bigger — but not nearly enough about what it actually costs to play it safe. Fear of failure keeps brilliant ideas stuck in our heads, careers stalled, and confidence quietly eroding. In this episode of This Is Woman's Work, Nicole Kalil is joined by Lorraine H. Marchand, innovation expert, Wharton professor, and author of No Fear, No Failure. Together, they unpack why failure isn't the enemy — avoidance is. From reframing fear as data, to designing smarter experiments, to creating cultures (and inner narratives) where learning beats perfection, this conversation is a permission slip to try, fail, learn… and keep going. If you've ever felt paralyzed by getting it wrong, worried about failing publicly, or trapped by environments that say they want innovation but punish mistakes — this episode is for you. We explore: Why fear of failure shuts down growth faster than actual failure ever could How to reframe failure as learning (and why that changes everything) Why women are more likely to internalize failure — and how to stop How to test ideas without burning it all down What “failing forward” looks like in real life (not just on LinkedIn) How to stop being afraid of other people seeing you try Because growth doesn't happen without risk — and playing it safe has a cost. It sounds like "who do I think I am?" when you dream about a relationship where someone truly loves you, when you consider financial freedom, when you think about that creative project your friends think is crazy.Lewis gets raw about the inner critic we've all trained. The voice that says you're not smart enough, not talented enough, that you're a failure. He breaks down why we turn failures into identity instead of feedback, why we learned to overwork and overachieve just to feel validated, and why we self-sabotage right before things go well. The shift isn't about ego or thinking you're better than anyone. It's simpler and more profound: worthiness is believing you don't have to punish yourself to deserve a good life. You failed at walking as a baby a thousand times and never called yourself a failure. That same truth applies now. Stop blocking what's trying to reach you.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. If you've lived life in a larger body, you know what it's like when you just feel "too big".  You look at a group photo and instead of seeing a great memory, all you see is how much space you take up. You second-guess what you order at a catered lunch because you're sure someone's watching what the overweight doctor eats. And that shrinking doesn't stop at your body — it starts showing up in your opinions, your needs, and how you move through the world. In this episode, I dig into the "too big, too large" belief — where it actually comes from, how it quietly runs way more of your life than you realize, and why the place you make changes from matters just as much as the changes themselves.  This one's for you if you've ever tried to make yourself smaller in any way — physically or otherwise.

In this episode, I'm talking about the least flashy but most important part of your health journey: your mindset. If you keep starting strong and then falling off, feeling overwhelmed, or jumping from plan to plan, it might not be a discipline problem - it could be self-sabotage patterns running in the background. I break down the most common ones I see in women and explain why real, lasting change comes from small daily shifts, not big, dramatic overhauls. Have an episode suggestion? Text us!What if the thing holding you back isn't your past…it's the story you keep telling yourself about it?In this Mindset Monday, I'm coming for limiting beliefs. The quiet “rules” you picked up in survival mode and never updated. The lie that you're not smart enough, not disciplined, not the “type” who gets sober, not the “type” who succeeds, not the “type” who gets a healthy relationship or a fresh start.I break down how these beliefs form (childhood chaos, early failure, being labeled), why they made sense back then, and why they're costing you everything now. Then we run a simple exercise we use in Reclaiming You: find the belief, name the cost, question it, and test it - because new evidence doesn't come from thinking, journaling, or “getting ready.” It comes from action. If you've ever looked at people with their life together and thought, “That's not for someone like me,” this episode is your wake-up call. You're not made of different stuff. You're just still buying the narrative that you accepted wholesale without scrutiny once upon a time.Find video clips and full length video from this episode on YouTube and our other social media pages! On the web:www.twfo.comSupport the Show:Buy Us a Coffee! In this episode of Life Rewired, Kristina breaks down the seven most common nutrition mistakes she sees while doing food audits. After analyzing thousands of logs, one thing has become clear: what is holding so many women back is simply repeating small, compounding mistakes that no one has ever clearly identified. When three honest days of intake are reviewed objectively, patterns emerge. And often, the issue is not a need for lower calories or stricter macros, but better structure and smarter distribution.Kristina walks through the biggest offenders, including under-eating protein earlier in the day, failing to distribute calories evenly, building macro-based meals instead of balanced plates, relying too heavily on snacks, inaccurately measuring portions, and overlooking liquid calories. She explains why evenly spaced protein supports muscle and metabolism, how fiber and micronutrient density influence blood sugar and fullness, and why rhythm in daily intake creates stability for both body composition and energy. The episode also highlights how subtle habits like eyeballing portions or hoarding calories for dinner can quietly stall progress over time.Ultimately, this conversation reframes fat loss frustration as a data problem, not a discipline problem. Food audits remove emotion and replace it with clarity, allowing women to see exactly where small adjustments can create powerful change. Rather than encouraging more restriction, Kristina emphasizes structure, awareness, and intentional balance as the true drivers of sustainable results.FUNCTIONAL & FITNESS AUDIT (LIMITED TIME):https://builtgroupcoaching.my.canva.site/nutrition-auditWATCH ON YOUTUBE:https://www.youtube.com/@kristinaturnure/podcastsBALANCED BLUEPRINT MEMBERSHIP:https://builtgroupcoaching.my.canva.site/balancedblueprintmembershipBUILT AND BALANCED VIP COACHING:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScV_IGO2VhRV415iIsiHz6TGr76wuH-loG2eGt068pZG474qw/viewform BUILT & BALANCED NEWSLETTER:https://builtandbalanced.kit.com/dd0f3197ccLIFE REWIRED IG:https://www.instagram.com/LIFEREWIREDPODCAST/?utm_medium=copy_linkKRIS IG:https://www.instagram.com/kristinaturnure/?hl=enNASH BARS:https://nashnutrition.co/PTULA: DISCOUNT CODE KRISTINAT https://www.ptula.com/TRANSPARENT LABS: CODE KRISTINA https://athlete.transparentlabs.com/kristinaturnure

Hosts Kevin Palmieri and Alan Lazaros unpack why so many people lose momentum after reaching a goal and how that quiet pattern limits long-term success. After years of building businesses, coaching clients, and studying high-performance behavior, they have seen the same cycle repeat as people push hard to win, comfort sets in, discipline fades, and standards slip. They explain why lasting growth comes from identity, not outcomes. You'll learn how motivation really works, why external rewards rarely sustain progress, and how aligned habits create stability in business, health, and relationships. This is a practical conversation about building self-driven discipline and durable systems that hold up even when motivation runs low._______________________Digital Asset:The 5 M's of Next Level Motivation - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SNYQ2RuPg6fgqGA5Og9a7xFmX2lR3y7x/view_______________________Learn more about:Book Alan's Business Breakthrough Session.
