„Proč jsme cancelovali vědomí?“ ptá se německo-americký fyzik a filozof Christof Koch ve své knize Then I Am Myself the World. Po dlouhou dobu totiž v anglosaské, převážně analytické filosofii dominoval názor, že vše, co existuje, je v posledku vysvětlitelné fyzikou – a že i vědomí lze chápat jako druhotný produkt mozku. Subjektivní prožívání a jeho stavy nás sice mohou znepokojovat, skutečná podstata reality však má ležet jinde: v neuronech, synapsích a výpočtech. Samy prožitky – bolest, radost či úzkost – snadno vyznívají jako iluzorní „divadlo v hlavě“. Koch si všímá, že tato víra v neomezenou explanační moc mozku dnes ztrácí svou samozřejmost, a to zároveň s ústupem kulturní a intelektuální dominance tzv. západního světa. Do popředí se naopak vracejí tradičnější koncepce vědomí, které paradoxně působí méně naivně než mnohé moderní redukcionistické teorie – a právě proto dokážou lépe držet krok se současnou fyzikou.Pozoruhodné jsou zkušenosti lidí, kteří jsou schopni hluboké meditace. Z hlediska současných zobrazovacích metod by se takový stav mohl jevit téměř jako nevědomí: oblasti mozku spojené s vnitřním dialogem, sebereflexí či kreativním přemítáním jsou při hluboké meditaci nápadně „tiché“. Jenže tato tichost neznamená absenci prožívání. Znamená především to, že je dočasně obejito lidské já: hlučná, neustále komentující instance, která však nese jen omezenou možnost zásadní proměny. Naopak posílení vědomí, jež lidské já tlumí, otevírá prostor pro mezní zkušenosti. Ty mohou měnit samu formu života: člověk se stává vnímavějším, pozornějším, otevřenějším světu i druhým. To, co se zvenčí – očima zobrazovacích technik – může jevit jako pasivita, prožívají lidé z nitra jako hlubokou pozornost, schopnou zásadní proměny lidské zkušenosti.Podobně lze uvažovat i o psychedelických zkušenostech, stejně jako o zkušenostech blízké smrti. Díky moderní urgentní medicíně dnes někteří lidé přežijí stavy klinické smrti. Intuitivně bychom očekávali, že půjde o hluboce traumatizující zážitky – a pro mnohé skutečně jsou. Ale významná část přeživších, až dvacet procent, popisuje tyto zkušenosti jako osvobozující a hluboce smysluplné. Často přitom používají jazyk blízký tomu, který volí i Christof Koch: lidské já povolí, zatímco vědomí se paradoxně rozšíří a prohloubí.Nemusí přitom jít o nic mystického. Vědomí, o které Christofu Kochovi jde – čiré vědomí existence – zakoušíme i v zcela běžných situacích: když se ráno probudíme nebo když nás někdo náhle vytrhne z hlubokého spánku. Ještě nevíme, kde jsme ani kým jsme, ale už víme, že jsme. Mystické či mezní zkušenosti tento stav syrového vědomí „jen“ rozšiřují a prohlubují. Právě proto má smysl o takové vědomí pečovat a věnovat se tomu, co Koch nazývá mental flossing – jakési mentální hygieně. Jde o každodenní praxi, v níž se učíme dočasně ztišit vnitřní dialog, vymanit se z přemílání starých křivd a „vyčistit“ své vnímání od nánosů automatických interpretací. Nejde o typickou aktivitu, analýzu problémů ani sebepoznání skrze vyprávění. Zvenčí se tato praxe může jevit jako pasivita, jako nicnedělání, ve skutečnosti však představuje prohloubenou formu vědomé pozornosti – takovou, která nepozorovaně, ale zásadně proměňuje samu formu života, a náš život činí lepším.ObsahI. This episode is spoiler- filled and contains explicit language.Darren Aronofsky's sophomore feature, Requiem for a Dream, continues to be talked about today yet it's a curious case as it's respected but beloved may not be exactly the perfect word. This film is often regarded as "the best film you'll never rewatch" due to its bleak but impactful ending. Requiem for a Dream follows four people, all connected to Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), who are striving to achieve their dreams in the most dangerous, self- destructing ways through their addictions. While Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn) tries her hardest to lose weight to look her best on television, he along with his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) and friend Ty (Marlon Wayans) are addicted to heroin. The three of them hope to turn their ideas of being successful businessmen into a reality but the need for heroin persists. Though widely considered a psychological drama, Aronofsky considers this film an “urban horror film” in the sense that the film captures a dream that turns into a nightmare. This film is based on Hubert Selby jr's novel published in 1978 and Aronofsky was happy to involve Selby in the making of this film (he even makes a cameo towards the end!). Even though Requiem for a Dream is still celebrated today, the film only earned one Oscar nomination in the "Best Supporting Actress" category for Ellen Burstyn. Of all the films I have seen, there is nothing quite like Requiem for a Dream from the cinematography to the editing to its lasting impact which has made me eager to devote an episode to the film.This is Samy's fourteenth time on the podcast, sustaining his place as the second most frequent guest on the show! I had been wanting to do an episode on Requiem for a Dream for over three years now and it was a hard topic to pitch to others. Those who have yet to see the film were hesitant to watch it while those who have seen the film, did not want to revisit it. Thankfully Samy, although slightly reluctant, was up for the challenge. While it is hard for both of us to say this is one of our favorite films, we have a deep respect for it and would probably regard it as one of the best films we've ever seen.
