Gareth Damian Martin and Reid McCarter begin a look at the entirety of Kentaro Miura's Berserk with a discussion of its first two chapters, "Black Swordsman" and "The Brand" from Volume 1. In our debut episode, we discuss how we first encountered Berserk, the influences it draws from (and the work it's influenced in turn), and the joy of looking at all the ways Miura creates compositions based around Guts' absurdly giant sword.Next time: the remainder of the Black Swordsman Arc, "Guardian Angels of Desire," covering the rest of Volume 1, the entirety of Volume 2, and Volume 3 up to the beginning of "Golden Age."For more from Gareth, visit their Twitter @JumpOvertheAge and for more from Reid, visit @ReidMcCarter.The Idea of Evil intro/outro theme was written and performed by Blake Hester (@MetallicaIsRad). We're joined by Reid McCarter of Bullet Points Monthly, who in a surprising turn of events, actually likes this game. We discuss why Reid thinks Dead Men, actually is great, why Blake had to throw in the towel, and mentally prepare ourselves for our journey through Kane & Lunch 2: Dog Days. We've been fascinated by Kingdom Hearts since childhood. But is a series worth going back to? We investigate the value of a long derided series by talking to fans who grew up with the series, and adults who are trying to make sense of it today. Toniiiiiight. We are Pets. So let's fill the bowl with kibble, or we can all nibble, on some boooones. "Pets" is the topic in this episode, which is appropriate since they needed to spray Colin with a water bottle in this one. Tune in as Greg recounts the trauma of the worst crime ever perpetuated against him. Giovanni frets over virtual birds. Colin explores his unprocessed feelings towards Tubs the cat. And Dave just tries to pet some digital dogs. Note: Colin, in his "Vacation Dave" state, conflated Digimon Tamagotchi with all Tamagotchi. He regrets this mistake. Please no emails. Please post pictures of your pets to our Facebook and Twitter. You can also find more critter related content on our YouTube channel. Lastly, in exchange for giving us a like and review on Apple Podcasts, one of our hosts will be your pet for the day! I guess that's why Colin has all those collars. Games discussed include the Pokemon series, Nintendogs and Cats, Neko Atsume, and Fallout 4 Show Notes: Mo’ Neopoints, Mo’ Problems: How That Website We Liked As Kids Became An Economist’s Nightmare, Victoria McNally Dogmeat, Fallout 4, and the Anxiety of Everything, Reid McCarter DIGIMON SQUISHABLES ARE A THING
This episode contains the following segments: Our understanding of history can change how we depict it, and who gets to play the hero. We look at Kingdom Come: Deliverance as a case study. We talk to David Perry and Reid McCarter. Here's Reid's original article in Unwinnable, and Geraldine Heng's book on race in medieval Europe. Daniel Rosen gives us a look into Yakuza 6, the new adventure of the affable criminal Kazuma Kiryu, and why he's loved exploring its version of Japan. The Ringer's Ben Lindbergh and Jason Concepcion talk to writer Reid McCarter and lecturer in video game studies Hugo Montembeault about the dark side of Ubisoft's 'Ghost Recon Wildlands,' realism in shooters, and big-budget games' ongoing struggle to depict real-world problems in fictional form (0:30). Then they bring on 'Super Smash Bros. Melee' analyst Daniel Lee and 'League of Legends' analyst Jeffrey Liang for a primer on the metagame and the past, present, and future of eSports stats (28:15).
On this week's episode, freelance writer for Paste, PCGamer, and Bullet Points Monthly, Reid McCarter, joins host Josiah Renaudin to discuss the state of AAA video game reviews. The two tackle the response to Ghost Recon: Wildlands, cover how some writers can slip into a cycle of lazy criticism, wonder how the writing in Wildlands ever made it by an editor, and argue over whether certain reviews should be called out for ignoring troubling thematic elements.
This month we turn our attention to the genre anthology book, Shooter. Edited by Patrick Lindsey and Reid McCarter, the book bought 15 essays and a forward by Clint Hocking placing a wide variety of shooter video games in a historical and cultural context. We discuss their focus on a broad genre as opposed to a single game, what they were trying to say with the book and the process of putting together such an anthology. Unlike previous books, as this one is an anthology and in that spirit we decided to get some of the writers for some micro interviews.
