Hello to you listening in Pasadena, California! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. I've been binge-watching The Big Bang Theory TV series as I do this time each year to humor me through our Pacific Northwest November to May Rain Festival. As you might know a consistent theme is the characters' devotion to comics and superheroes. Why? The characters are highly intelligent, socially awkward nerds who have difficulty navigating society whereas the superheroes possess save-the-day abilities, rare powers, and bravery. Comics can be a safe place to fantasize living idealized versions of themselves as the nerd-turned-hero. But what do the Superheroes have to say about living life as a Superhero? Following are 7 quotes: 1. “When you decide not to be afraid you can find friends in super unexpected places.” — Ms. Marvel 2. “Everybody's story begins “once upon a time,” and it's up to us to cherish the time we're given to ensure we live happily ever after.” — Scarlet Witch 3. “I have no idea where I'm going to be tomorrow but I accept the fact that tomorrow will come and I'm going to rise to meet it.” — Donna Troy 4. “The fate of your planet rests not in the hands of gods. It rests in the hands of mortals.” — Thor 5. “The future is worth it. All the pain. All the tears. The future is worth the fight.” — Martian Manhunter 6. “The door is more than it appears. It separates who you are from who you can be. You do not have to walk through it… You can run.” — Franklin Richards 7. “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulders to let him know the world hasn't ended.” — Batman Story Prompt: For a long time your character has felt that she is more than she appears to be but does not believe she has what it takes to show up fully in her power until one day a door appears in a wall and she .... write that story and share it out loud! This week Jake and Tyler dive into some news before reading all the comics!Absolute Batman #16 by Scott Snyder & Nick DragottaAbsolute Wonder Woman #16 by Kelly Thompson & Hayden ShermanAbsolute Martian Manhunter #8 by Deniz Camp & Javier RamirezThe Mortal Thor #6 by Al Ewing & Pasqual FerryThe Infernal Hulk #3 by Phillip Kennedy Johson, Nic Klein, & Kev Walker
We dive into the Absolute Universe for the very first time to find out what amazing reason John Jones has for being... green.
Joshua Noel and TJ Blackwell dive into the cosmic depths of "Absolute Martian Manhunter", Volume 1, where they explore the riveting narrative crafted by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Javier Rodríguez. Right off the bat, they tackle the heavy question of whether folks fear the Martian Manhunter more for his alien origins or because he mirrors humanity's own flaws. As they dissect the storyline, they highlight how this comic transcends typical superhero fare, delving into themes of identity, loneliness, and emotional chaos—especially in our hyper-connected world. With a casual vibe peppered with witty banter, the duo emphasizes the significance of reading in today's society, advocating for literacy and local libraries through their All Reading Counts initiative. Listeners can expect a blend of insightful commentary and light-hearted humor as they break down the artistic brilliance and profound implications of this unique take on the iconic character. The podcast dives deep into the psychological intricacies of the Martian Manhunter, a character often overshadowed in the broader DC Universe. Joshua and TJ kick things off with a thought-provoking question: are people really afraid of him because he's an alien, or does he mirror humanity's darker aspects? It's a profound inquiry that sets the stage for a rich discussion on the themes of alienation, identity, and the human condition, reflecting on how the Martian Manhunter's existence challenges our perceptions of what it means to be 'other.' As they unravel the narrative of "Absolute Martian Manhunter", penned by Denise Camp and illustrated by Javier Rodriguez, the duo highlights its unique take on the character, making it feel less like a superhero comic and more like a psychological thriller. They explore how the art style and color choices enhance the storytelling, emphasizing the emotional weight of the narrative. The episode is peppered with witty banter and personal anecdotes, especially as they reflect on their own experiences with reading and how literature shapes our understanding of complex themes. Overall, listeners are treated to a blend of humor and depth, making the discussion both entertaining and enlightening. The conversation shifts gears as Joshua and TJ discuss the importance of reading in today's world, particularly in combating the brain fog that comes with information overload. TJ highlights the benefits of reading for critical thinking, vocabulary enhancement, and overall mental clarity, while Joshua emphasizes its role in fostering deeper conversations and understanding among people. They both agree that comics, especially "Absolute Martian Manhunter", serve as an excellent medium for exploring complex themes like identity and alienation. The duo's chemistry shines as they joke about their reading habits and preferences, contrasting the struggle of keeping up with comic releases against the backdrop of contemporary societal issues. They touch upon how the emotional turmoil of the Martian Manhunter resonates with the current socio-political climate, where feelings of loneliness and isolation are rampant despite the connectivity of social media. It's a layered discussion that resonates with anyone grappling with the chaos of modern life.In the latter half of the episode, the focus narrows down to the character of Jon Jones and his transformation into the Martian Manhunter. The duo intricately discusses how the narrative portrays his struggles with identity and the overwhelming emotions he experiences. They analyze the psychological dimensions of the character, drawing parallels between Jon's journey and the broader experience of humanity in today's chaotic world. The White Martian serves as a compelling antagonist, embodying nihilism and the fear of being overwhelmed by emotions and societal expectations. As they dissect the themes of loneliness versus connection, Joshua and TJ cleverly intertwine humor with poignant observations about

As part of the Comic Boom! and Comic Source collaboration, this DC Spotlight for the week of January 28, 2026 finds Jace and Rocky breaking down a packed slate of fourteen DC releases, with discussion opening on the passing and legacy of Sal Buscema before turning to the week's books. DC KO: The Kids Are All Fight Special #1 is examined for its focus on younger heroes and its place as a largely skippable but well-drawn tie-in, while Detective Comics #1105 continues Tom Taylor's "The Courage That Kills" arc with deeper insight into the Lion's origin and Gotham's escalating crisis. Harley Quinn #58 is discussed as the start of a new arc that feels tonally familiar, followed by the Supergirl Next Door Valentine's anthology, which offers mixed results across stories spotlighting Supergirl, Jay Garrick, Poison Ivy, Guy Gardner, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Martian Manhunter, and Green Arrow. Green Lantern #31 features a nostalgic Hal Jordan and Barry Allen team-up that advances Jeremy Adams' larger arc in subtle ways, while Superman #34 pushes Superboy Prime further into moral conflict against the Dark Legion. Absolute Martian Manhunter #8 stands out for its conceptual storytelling and increased narrative momentum, The Flash #29 introduces Dream Girl as a potential crack in Darkseid's Legion, and Harley and Ivy: Love and Crimes #3 explores the early dynamics between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy with a more grounded emotional approach. Justice League Unlimited #15 and Justice League Red #6 wrap major threads involving Neuron, time-displaced heroes, and Red Tornado's reckoning, while Absolute Batman #16 delivers a character-driven underworld journey with Wonder Woman that highlights Bruce Wayne's loyalty and sacrifice. Absolute Flash #11 provides major revelations about the Still Point and the source of Wally West's power, and Absolute Wonder Woman #16 launches the "Season of the Witch" arc with Absolute Zatanna and a reimagined Suicide Squad, setting the stage for one of the week's most consequential confrontations.

The History of the Marvel Universe. Everyone deserves a little cheer and hope during the holidays; even dare I say a little comfort and joy. In this holiday episode, the Justice Leage save 2 worlds about to collide. But afterwards they decide to enjoy some time off. Flash plays Santa, along with the help of the Ultra-Humanite, for a group of orphans in Central City. Their hearts are set on a DJ Rubber Duckie and Flash and Ultra-Humanite put aside their differences to make their wish come true. Flash even gives Ultra-Humanite a piece of his childhood to enjoy in prison. Green Lantern and Hawkgirl have fun playing in the snow of the ice planet. But Hawkgirl wants to celebrate. They fly out into the galaxy. She has a world where she is well known and celebrates like she does. Her idea of celebration is drinking and fighting. She and Green Lantern celebrate and have a bar fight with the aliens. All is well. Superman takes the lonely Martian Manhunter home to Smallville for Christmas. Clark's love of the holiday is clear and his parents welcome J'onn with open arms. Only after he sees and helps the people of the town celebrate does he realize he too can enjoy the season. THIS IS THE WORST GAME OF CHESS ANYONE'S EVER SEEN!Checkmate is back, with Amanda Waller, and guess who they want? CHLOE, a.k.a. Watchtower! Clark is apparently super selfish for not checking in with Chloe on his every move. Somehow Tess just now finds out that Oliver is Green Arrow. Detective John Jones is being sketchy. Checkmate kidnaps Chloe, so Clark has to break some legs. Oh, and no Lois? Chess sucks!Phil Morris (Doom Patrol, Seinfeld) returns as DC Comics original character Martian Manhunter. Pam Grier (Jackie Brown, Foxy Brown) returns as DC Comics original character Amanda Waller. As always, enjoy the show and LEAVE THOSE FIVE STARS!
We're back after a little vacation to finally wrap up our coverage on the kickoff issues of DC's Absolute line of comics, and boy did we pick one to finish off with!
It's the last episode of the season! Rj Is going to close us out with one last Ostrander and Madrake pick, Martian Manhunter: Sun of Mars. We had a lot of fun with this one. We get to take a much deeper dive into an otherwise overlooked member of the Justice League. We talk about the origin of J'onn J'onzz, his unique powersets, and his many secret identities. We even go down a few of the tell-tale comic book rabbit holes about comic book character deaths and personal lives. A powerful villain and his forces have come to enslave the universe. These forces are surprisingly strong enough to destroy 2 members of the Green Lantern Corps, wound another and force a fourth into hiding. The almost mortally wounded Kilowog races to Earth to get help from John Stewart and the League. Katma Tui, the commander who stays behind, infiltrates Despero's cult to feed info to the rebellion. John goes looking for his former mentor and lover, Katma, and finds a world of hurt. The battle with Despero leaves him with a broken will. Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Hawkgirl arrive with Kilowog. They join up with John and the rebellion and plan to snuff out the Flame of Pytar, the source of Despero's power. John, Hawkgirl, and Katma are captured and all seems lost. John sees Hawkgirl threatened by Despero and it pushes him over his mental block. He fights Despero toe to toe. J'onn learns that the Pytar is the soul of the planet and with the help of the people they reject Despero. The planet regains it's life force, becoming lush and green, while Despero and his forces get entangled in the vines of the new growth and become part of the planet. John has grown past his love for Katma and looks to Hawkgirl as his new partner, after she has proven her loyalty and faith in him. Plus, Flash has made a new friend in Kilowog. Wonder Woman is in Paris for a party of world dignitaries and royalty. But she feels overwhelmed by people wanting to know about her. Thankfully Bruce Wayne steps in to pull her away for a dance. Bruce has not confided in the League yet that he is Batman, but by the end of these events, Diana has figured it out. They are called into action as soldiers try to kidnap Diana's new found friend and party mentor, Princess of Kaznia, Audrey. Regular soldiers are no trouble for Wonder Woman to take down, even in an evening dress. And Bruce Wayne enjoys the view. Audrey is engaged and wants to live it up one last time. She and Diana go shopping and clubbing. It is later revealed that Audrey's fiancé is Vandal Savage! His plans are to force Audrey to marry him, eliminate her father, rule Kaznia, and use their part in the Space Station to take over the world. He, with the help of Colonel Vox, have made the Space Station into a rail gun that can fire meteors down to Earth, and use it to hold the world hostage. Batman and Wonder Woman must help Audrey and stop Savage on the ground. Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter must take over the Space Station and destroy it. Nightmares abound in this episode! A seemingly nice and peaceful man has agreed to be experimented on while in prison, as the scientist tries to enhance the human brain with ESP abilities. During a stroke of great timing, a prison break erupts, and John D uses the distraction to go to the machine and put it to full power, granting him amazing mental abilities in the dream state. Using his new found mind control, he tests his power on his ex girlfriend who left him for another man, and there he discovers his new identity, Doctor Destiny. As his powers get stronger, and the League is trying to stop the prison break, he attacks them one at a time, invoking their worse fears to come to life...in their dreams! Martian Manhunter is the only one able to repel the attack, and it's up to him to shake everyone out of it before it's too late. Today, we're throwing it back to a special conversation recorded in 2020 during the virtual Baltimore Comic Con. My guests are the legendary team of J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire, two of the creative forces—alongside Keith Giffen—behind one of the most beloved and influential Justice League runs of all time.Their groundbreaking late-‘80s take on Justice League International reinvented the team book with heart, humor, and character-driven storytelling. It was a bold departure from grim and gritty trends, instead focusing on the humanity—and hilarity—of heroes like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Martian Manhunter, and Guy Gardner. And now, decades later, the spirit of that run has resurfaced in a major way, inspiring the tone and team dynamic of the Justice Gang in the new Superman film from James Gunn's DCU.
On this episode, the upcoming Superman movie has us in a Justice League frame of mind, which is as good an excuse as any to discuss the classic Tower of Babel storyline, as collected in JLA #43-46 by Mark Waid, Howard Porter and Steve Scott, and JLA Secret Files #3, by Dan Curtis Johnson and Pablo Raimondi, published by DC Comics! Batman's longtime nemesis Ra's al Ghul unleashes a plan to cull the world's population, and to ensure his success he proactively incapacitates the members of the Justice League! How does he do that? Funny you should ask! Turns out the Dark Knight Detective has been keeping files on his teammates, complete with ways to take them out! AWK-ward! Can the JLA stop Martian Manhunter from bursting into flame, help Aquaman get over his deathly fear of water, and put a literally shattered Plastic Man back together again? And can this high-stakes tale of trust betrayed gain entrance into that Himalayan retreat known as … The Comics Canon? In This Episode: · J'onn J'onzz and those darn apostrophes · What about the F-Sharp Bell? · Is the best issue in the bunch the one not written by Mark Waid? · Is Batman really, you know … wrong? · Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man · JLA: American Dreams Join us in two weeks as we prepare for Fantastic Four: First Steps with a look at The Mighty Thor issues #160-162 and #168-169!
