Color: Purple Old Testament: Genesis 32:22–32 Psalm: Psalm 121; antiphon: vv. 1–2 Epistle: Romans 5:1–5 Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 4:1–7 Gospel: Matthew 15:21–28 Introit: Psalm 25:1–2a, 7–8, 11; antiphon: vv. 6, 2b, 22 Gradual: Psalm 25:17–18 Tract: Psalm 106:1–4 Holding God to His Word Jacob wrestled with God; he would not let Him go until he received a blessing from Him (Gen. 32:22–32). So it was with the Canaanite woman. Though Jesus seemed to ignore and reject her, she continued to call upon His name and look to Him for help (Mt. 15:21–28). Even when the Lord called her a little dog, she held on to Him in faith and would not let Him wriggle out of His words: “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” This Gentile woman shows herself to be a true Israelite, who struggles with God and man in Christ and prevails. “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire” (Mt. 15:27–28). This is the sanctifying will of God (1 Thess. 4:1–7)—to test your faith in order that it may be refined and strengthened. For tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope. And hope in Christ does not disappoint (Rom. 5:1–5). Lectionary summary © 2021 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Reminiscere means "remember" and on this second Sunday in Lent we want God to remember us as we also remember that He is our only sure help. With the example of the Canaanite woman, we see what it looks like to cling to Christ as one's only help with strong faith. The Psalm of Ascent for today, Psalm 121, teaches to call on God as our only, sure and eternal Help.

Textus: Ézs 5,1-7 Dalt éneklek kedvesemről, szerelmesem szőlőjéről. Szőlője volt kedvesemnek kövér hegyoldalon. Fölásta és megtisztította a kövektől, beültette nemes vesszővel. Közepére tornyot emelt, sajtót is vágatott benne.

In the Gospel text for Reminiscere , the Second Sunday of Lent, Jesus calls a Canaanite woman a dog. As you might imagine, this passage causes a lot of trouble for some Christians. I've even heard one woman try to preach a sermon about this, saying, “Jesus was having a bad day. He lost His temper and…

Sermon for Reminiscere, the second Sunday in LentTo struggle with God is to see all the circumstances be horrible like God won't keep his promises. Feel like God won't hear, doesn't care, have absolutely nothing good for us that we can tell, and yet still hold on to Him in faith.

A mother brings a request to Jesus for the sake of her children, but it's different from the mother's request we heard on Sunday.
The saints of old were accustomed to the idea of wresting with God, but this concept is foreign to our modern ears. Why should I wrestle with God? Doesn't He already want to give me every good thing? It's easy enough to think of Lent as a time of wrestling against the desires of the flesh. But why, on…
