Brett Morris (CBB World, Screw It We're Just Gonna Talk About The Beatles, a million other podcasts) joins me to talk about Ween's 2003 album "Quebec"! We go pretty long here, including a lengthy tangent about Radiohead.   Other Ween songs I recommended to Brett after recording: I'm In The Mood To Move, Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down), Roses Are Free, Voodoo Lady, What Deaner Was Talking About, Piss up a Rope, The Mollusk, I'll Be Your Jonny on the Spot, Waving My Dick in the Wind, Ocean Man, Exactly Where I'm At, Bananas and Blow, Gabrielle, Learnin' To Love, Your Party, Woman And Man. These were just intended as a broad sampling, obviously there are lots of other great Ween songs!

When Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo - better known by their respective stage names Gene and Dean Ween of the band Ween - were given full reign of a professional recording studio for their 4th studio album, they rose to the occasion and crafted 1994's "Chocolate and Cheese". This week's guest, teacher and poet Josh Medsker, joins us as we attempt to dissect this weirdly wonderful, schizophrenic slab. Songs featured in this episode: What Deaner Was Talking About (Peel Session) - Ween; (For A While) I Couldn't Play My Guitar Like A Man - Aaron Freeman; Anchorage - Michelle Shocked; Push Th' Little Daisies - Ween; Punk's Not Dead - The Exploited; Piss Up A Rope - Ween; Man, It's So Loud In Here - They Might Be Giants; Take Me Away, Spinal Meningitis - Ween; Highway Star - Deep Purple; Freedom of '76, I Can't Put My Finger On It - Ween; Such A Scream - Tom Waits; Roses Are Free - Phish; Roses Are Free, Birthday Boy, Baby Bitch, Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony, Drifter In The Dark - Ween; Ace Of Long Nights - Umphry's McGee; Voodoo Lady, Candi, Buenas Tardes Amigo, The HIV Song, What Deaner Was Talking About, Don't Shit Where You Eat, What Deaner Was Talking About (Live in Toronto) - Ween

This week's guest is Joseph Rosenberg! Joseph was first exposed to Phish in the summer of '94 when he went on a walk with his dad after dinner to check out Phish at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, ME. Since they just listened to the show from outside the venue, Joseph doesn't credit this as his first Phish show. His first official Phish show came a few years later on 12/12/97 in Albany, NY. In addition to hearing some fun stories from Joseph's Phish shows over the years we also learn why his favorite jam is the Roses Are Free from Island Tour, and why he's okay with never hearing 46 Days, Sugar Shack, or Yarmouth Road again. Enjoy!

What's to say about this song?  If there's a definition to the slang term "banger" in the urban dictionary then there's a hyperlink next to it that sends you straight to Roses Are Free.  Banger among Bangers.  Arguably the greatest Ween song of all time.  So good that even Phish cannot tarnish it's impact upon music history.

Gene and Dean Ween are the best songwriting duo since Jagger and Richards, or Lennon and McCartney, or maybe it's Rogers and Hammerstein. You get the point. They are geniuses. Their canon features hundreds and hundreds of songs played to perfection in every genre. Sometimes these songs are drenched in feedback or feature pitch-adjusted vocals. Other times they play Dylanesque odes to former lovers that are a delicate as an orchid. There are songs about golden eels and children born without eyes. They have half a dozen songs about equine friends. They are as adept at speed-freak metal as they are Irish drinking songs. They even did a full country album. Deaner can wow you with his virtuosity on guitar and Gener could get a four-chair turn on The Voice. Ween can do it all. There is really no sampling of Ween that could give you an adequate understanding of what they are capable of. Nonetheless, here are a bakers' dozen of songs to whet your appetite:"Birthday Boy" from God, Ween, Satan: The Oneness"Dr. Rock" from The Pod"Push th' Little Daisies" and "The Stallion (pt 3)" from Pure Guava"Take Me Away," "Baby Bitch," "Buenas Tardes, Amigo," and "What Deaner Was Talking About" from Chocolate & Cheese"Piss Up a Rope" from 12 Golden Country Greats"The Golden Eel" and "Buckingham Green" from The Mollusk"Stay Forever" from White Pepper"Your Party" from La CucharachaOr you can dive in just about anywhere. The full albums Chocolate & Cheese, The Mollusk, and White Pepper  are the most accessible and consistently great albums, while the others get a little brown. Ween also has tons of "unreleased" music and their concerts are epic.Support the show (https://teespring.com/stores/the-new-dad-rock)

Welcome back to 36 from the Vault! In Episode 7 we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series, to chat about the post-Jerry years. Focusing on the larger touch points between Phish & The Dead, we dive into Phish’s 1998 Island Tour, highlighting the April 3, 1998 performance from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. A high point for Phish, they’d just reinvented themselves stylistically throughout 1997, and then booked a surprise run of shows just a few weeks prior to dive back into the Eno-inspired atmospheric funk jams they couldn’t get enough of. A true turning point in the band’s larger history, The Island Tour marks the point where the party begins to consume the band, and the darkness that’s lingering will soon consume them. A celebration & an ominous sign of what’s to come, it’s a fascinating moment in their history. Opening with stellar jams in “Mike’s Song” and “Weekapaug Groove,” the band later focuses on intra-band communication in “Reba.” The second, however, is the highlight of the overall show. Running just four songs, it reads: “Roses Are Free -> Piper -> Loving Cup> Run Like An Antelope.” Particualrly in the “Roses” and “Piper” the band connects with such effortlessness that they sound pre-recorded. In the encore, “Halley’s Comet” leads into the second-ever stateside “Carini” before the rare “Tweezer-less” “Tweezer Reprise” closes the show.Steven and Rob focus on the energy that guided Phish throughout the 90s, highlighting the decisions that led to their 1997 reinvention, and how this run shifted the band towards their more modern incarnation with all its surprises and challenges. In addition, they discuss the legacy of the thoughtful groove-driven jamming that defined the era. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced by Brian Brinkman, and mastered by Matt Dwyer. All music composed by Amar Sastry, unless otherwise noted. Logo design by Liz Bee Art & Design. The executive producer of 36 from the Vault is RJ Bee. Please consider reviewing this podcast on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In Episode 082 we conclude our 20th Anniversary celebration of the Big Cypress Festival with a discussion of the massive pre-dawn jam off Roses Are Free in the early hours of January 1, 2000. A raw, minimalistic take on the rare cover, this equally sounds like an overtired band running on extended muscle memory from their closest attempt at the LG, and a proper welcoming to the first sunrise of the 21st Century. Songs featured in this episode are: Garcia Peoples: “One Step Behind,” The Microphones: “Here With Summer,” Gay Dad: “Dateline”In addition, we discuss two overlooked 2019 records we highly recommend: Leo Svirvsky: “River Without Banks” and Titus Andronicus: “An Obelisk” — — — We want to tell you about a new show from Osiris, After Midnight.
