POPULARITY
Episode 085 kicks off with the return of STS9's ALANA ROCKLIN! The beloved bassist delivered one of this program's most popular conversations [#66, Spring 2023]; Rocklin was kind enough to come back for another round, a shorter interview recorded mid-Feb.2025 aboard Jam Cruise 21. We linked up on my cabin balcony for a discussion that covered the band's long-awaited return to The Boat (and Alana's maiden voyage!), new Sector 9 compositions and their forthcoming LP, curating intentional setlists and introducing material in the live element, the post-pandemic current touring model, live music bringing people together in tough times, and more! 0:00 - ep.085 preview 3:30 - sponsor - OM Festival 5:30 - The Upful Update 10:30 - introducing ALANA ROCKLIN 14:30 - interview w/Alana [33 min] 47:30 - afterglow > CORNFLOWER spot 52:10 - introducing ASHER FULERO 56:10 - interview w/ Asher [62 min] 1:57:45 - sign-off, ViBE Junkie Jamz Alana's chat is chased with a lengthier convo featuring Portland, OR's virtuosic keyboardist/producer/composer ASHER FULERO. We unpack his phenomenal 2024 solo LP 'Worlds', a hybrid organic-electronic affair that remains among my faves last calendar year. Fulero details a journey through the creative process and industry opportunities, how this particular project was wrought with false starts and new lessons/understandings; plus recording/releasing original music in the ever-confounding streaming/social media era of sound-art and consumerism. In addition to Asher Fuler Band and experimental trio Threedom, the artist transparently reflects on experiences working with Emancipator Ensemble, Everyone Orchestra, Liberation Movement, Yonder Mountain String Band, Jon Fishman, and more. Send us a Text Message.Hi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's special guest is Jamie Boldt, and boy, did he pick a winner to review today: 10/31/95 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Illinois.Regular listeners of Attendance Bias will note that The Who was THE band for me as I made the transition from classic rock and alternative radio in my early teens to exploring the world beyond the corporate record stores and Top 40 radio. To say it another way: before Phish, there was The Who. As you'll hear Jamie and I discuss in just a little while: it was a major turning point for me when I found out about this Halloween show. In the bigger picture, this was Phish's 2nd Halloween musical costume. After the unmitigated success of The White Album Halloween show in 1994, the band chose to go a different route, playing a huge venue in the midwest, and choosing a relatively obscure album that required additional musicians. But there's more to this show than the musical costume; the first and third set are masterpieces that stand on their own.Jamie chose to discuss this show for a number of reasons, and one of them is that he wanted to get my take on the convergence of Phish and The Who. While I am the host of this podcast, and I get my thoughts in there, Jamie is the guest and we get to hear what it was like to witness this epic show that continues to live on the top shelf of Phish history. So let's join Jamie to talk about Greenwich Village, mod culture, and Jon Fishman's relatives as we discuss October 31, 1995 in Chicago.
"Jamming with Legends: Derek Trucks & Remembering James Casey"Larry Mishkin begin with a discussion about a recent Phish concert featuring a special guest appearance by Derek Trucks, during which they performed songs like "Golden Age," "First Tube," and "Possum." They reflect on the unique chemistry between Derek Trucks and Trey Anastasio and how it elevated the performance. The second part of the episode is a tribute to James Casey, a talented saxophonist who recently passed away at the age of 40 due to colon cancer. They mention his contributions to the jam band community and his ability to harmonize and play alongside iconic musicians like Trey Anastasio and Phil Lesh. Larry share heartfelt messages from Trey Anastasio, Bill Kreutzmann, and Billy Strings, highlighting James Casey's remarkable musical talents and the impact he had on those who worked with him..Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergRecorded on Squadcast Derek Trucks walked out on stage at Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center (“SSPAC”) on August 26th and that is just too good to ignore. So three songs from that show with Derek Trucks playing along. Also, James Casey died at 40 from colon cancer. Amazing musician, tremendous Sax player and great singer. Played as part of the “brass” section for Trey Anastasio Band along with Jennifer Hartwick and Natalie Cressman. The same brass section also toured with Phil Lesh and Friends - I just saw them with James this past March at the Salt Shed in Chicago (I did not know he was sick). SHOW #1: First Tube:20 – 1:38Phish with Derek Trucks - First Tube. Saratoga Springs 8/26/23 #phish #derektrucks - YouTube “First Tube,” is the 12th and final track on the band's 2000 album, Farmhouse Anastasio led a performance by a one-off band called 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes on April 17, 1998, at the original Higher Ground in Winooski, just outside Burlington, Vermont. The show was the first time Anastasio performed in public with Lawton and Markellis, who were joined by guitarist/vocalist Tom Lawson of The Pants, saxophonist Dave Grippo, trombonist James Harvey and vocalist Heloise Williams of Viperhouse.“First Tube” was seemingly named for its placement as the first song played at the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show, which also saw the premieres of future Phish/TAB songs “Sand,” “Mozambique” and “Last Tube.” Trey, Tony and Russ would go on to form the first incarnation of the Trey Anastasio Band which made its debut — back at the Higher Ground — in February 1999. That concert again featured “First Tube” as part of the setlist. The same TAB trio was also the lineup on Trey's first solo tour in May 1999. By the end of that acoustic/electric tour, “First Tube” was a full-on show-stopper that highlighted many electric second sets. Along with fellow 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes original “Mozambique,” “First Tube” made its Phish debut on September 9, 1999, in Vancouver, British Columbia. One of two instrumentals on Farmhouse — along with “The Inlaw Josie Wales” — “First Tube” earned Phish a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001. Nominated alongside Peter Frampton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Satriani, Phish lost to Metallica, Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony's “The Call of Ktulu” First Tube” was played by Phish four times when they returned in 2003 but not at all in 2004, the year that began a second break lasting until 2009. Since coming back from the second hiatus, “First Tube” has remained a staple of both Phish concerts and Trey solo shows SHOW #2: Possum53:40 – 55:09Phish w Derek Trucks Live - YouTube The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday (often abbreviated as TMWSIY) is a 1987 concept album written by Trey Anastasio, the guitarist and lead vocalist of the American rock band Phish, as his senior thesis while attending Goddard College. Composed in 1987, the thesis included an essay piece and collection of songs (recorded by Phish) relating an epic tale from the band's fictional land of Gamehendge. On the album, the story of Gamehendge is told in nine parts, with short spoken narration in between. The saga can be compared to rock concept album projects like The Doors' Celebration of the Lizard or Rush's 2112 suite. The story's primary protagonist is Colonel Forbin. Other major characters include Tela, the "jewel of Wilson's foul domain" and the "evil" Wilson himself. Several of the album's spoken narrative sections are accompanied by background music borrowed from sections of the Phish songs "Esther" and "McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters". The final track, "Possum", is the only song on the album not written by Anastasio, having been written by former Phish member Jeff Holdsworth and later added to the Gamehendge cycle.Jeff Holdsworth is a musician who was a founding member of the rock band Phish.[1] Founded at the Redstone campus dormitories of the University of Vermont (UVM) in the fall of 1983, the band originally featured Holdsworth and Trey Anastasio sharing lead vocal and guitar duties, Jon Fishman on drums, and Mike Gordon on bass guitar. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 after graduating from UVM to pursue a career in electrical engineering, shortly before the band recorded their debut self-produced album, The White Tape, though he had played on some of the demo recordings (done in a dorm room) that would later be re-recorded for that album. His songs "Possum" and "Camel Walk" continue to be Phish live show favorites. Rick Mitarotonda (Goose) + James Casey (TAB) - 3/17/23 - YouTube Dear Prudence" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). The song was written by John Lennon and credited to the Lennon–McCartneypartnership. Written in Rishikesh during the group's trip to India in early 1968, it was inspired by actress Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence Farrow, who became obsessive about meditating while practising with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.[2] Her designated partners on the meditation course, Lennon and George Harrison, attempted to coax Farrow out of her seclusion, which led to Lennon writing the song. Lennon wrote "Dear Prudence" using a finger-picking guitar technique that he learned from singer-songwriter Donovan. Its lyrics are simple and innocent and celebrate the beauty of nature. The Beatles recorded the song at Trident Studios in late August 1968 as a three-piece after Ringo Starr temporarily left the group out of protest at McCartney's criticism of his drumming on "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the tensions that typified the sessions for the White Album. Dear Prudence" has received praise from music critics, with many praising its lyrics and the band's performance. Lennon later selected it as one of his favourite songs by the Beatles. The song has been covered by many artists, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Ramsey Lewis and Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose version was a top-five hit in the UK in 1983. Bass Month has been wonderful !! Aram Bedrosian is an amazing solo bassist with a great story, awesome sense of humor and one of a kind playing style. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show! "Born and raised in Burlington, Vermont, Aram began playing at 13 and developed his technique playing in progressive rock and funk bands. He studied composition in college while frequently performing live and recording with various touring acts all over the U.S.. After earning a reputation as a first-class pro bassist he released his debut album of emotionally resonant and technically dazzling original unaccompanied solo pieces. It quickly earned glowing reviews and worldwide attention; leading to co-billings with Buckethead, Joe Bonommassa and other world-class artists as well as numerous endorsements. Also a highly sought-after bass instructor in Vermont and worldwide, he is the resident bass faculty member at Johnson State College, the founder of the Burlington Music Dojo musical collective in Vermont, and a contributor to the Bass Players United online community. On October 28, 2021, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) released its Updated Guidance For A Risk Based Approach For Virtual Assets and Virtual Asset Providers (guidance or final guidance). The guidance hit on some of the hottest topics in crypto including DeFi, NFTs, unhosted wallets, stablecoins and the travel rule. Here are some takeaways: When it comes to DeFi, you need to use the functional owner/operator test. FATF is less concerned over the use of the term decentralized to describe your business, but rather is focused on whether or not a project is actually decentralized. Just because something is automated does not mean it is decentralized. NFTs are not virtual assets if they are tickets or momentos of an event without a secondary market, but if they transfer value, and/or live and move on a trading platform, they could be virtual assets. VASPs and their regulators may allow for a staged approach when it comes to travel rule implementation, but that staged approach must result in earlier implementation than otherwise would have been the case. Stablecoin issuers and governance bodies could be VASPs and need to build risk-based compliance in order to mitigate risks that may come with mass adoption. Next up for FATF? Working with regulators around the globe on implementation of the standards. Check out TRM's full coverage of FATF's guidance here: https://www.trmlabs.com/post/fatf- provides-final-guidance Joining TRM Talks to discuss the guidance and get clarification on key issues are the chairs of FATF's Virtual Assets Contact Group (VACG), Habuchi Takahide of Japan's Financial Services Agency and Jon Fishman of the U.S. Treasury. To celebrate our move to Anchor.fm, we've gone back and taken another look at our earlier episodes. Man, it's been a while, and we've learned a lot. Although our earlier lo-fi era certainly had it's brown charm, we thought it couldn't hurt to remaster these sons a' bitches. We ran noise reduction and took a fine tooth comb to the .wav file, adjusting amplification to improve listenability. While we didn't include any deleted scenes, or give you an extended peek at the Wampa, we hope that these improvements make this episode better to listen to. Episode 8: 08/28/1999, The Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA. In this episode we go back to the city of brotherly love for the final show of the Paintin the Town Brown tour! We get down with the get down on August 28th 1999 at the Electric Factory! This was our second show in Philadelphia that year, only the venue had changed, and Ween had been touring hard in support of the recently released Paintin' The Town Brown Live Album, a seminal live retrospective of the band's live history to that point. This was the kind of a night, at the end of a tour, in home territory, where Ween just burned the place down. Reverend B'ill was in the house and he sat in on a few tunes, and Jon Fishman of Phish was also there, and well, you'll have to check out the podcast if you want to see what we say about that! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/weencastpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/weencastpodcast/support

He worked with former White Zombie singer Rob Zombie as a solo artist and served as drum technician for Charlie Benante, drummer for the heavy metal band Anthrax earlier in his career. He is referenced in Anthrax's rendition of "Friggin' in the Riggin'" (from their 1989 EP Penikufesin), with lyrics about the band's crew members. DM for link if interested This Week's Topic - Phish:(Source: Wikipedia - Phish)Phish is an American rock band that formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the primary lead vocalist. The band was formed by Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who were joined by McConnell in 1985. Holdsworth departed the band in 1986, and the lineup has remained stable since. Phish performed together for 15 years before beginning a two-year hiatus in October 2000. The band regrouped in late 2002, but disbanded again in August 2004. They reunited in March 2009 for a series of three consecutive concerts at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia, and have since resumed performing regularly.Phish's music blends elements of a wide variety of genres, including funk, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, folk, country, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and pop. The band was part of a movement of improvisational rock groups, inspired by the Grateful Dead and colloquially known as "jam bands", that gained considerable popularity as touring concert acts in the 1990s. Phish has developed a large and dedicated following by word of mouth, the exchange of live recordings, and selling over 8 million albums and DVDs in the United States. In Episode 101 we’re joined by a fantastic DJ and massive music collector, Wade Wilby for a lively discussion on the drumming of Jon Fishman, the larger breakbeat history & culture, and how Phish has incorporated breakbeats into their sound. According to Wikipedia, “The most likely origin of the word “breakbeat” is the fact that the drum loops that were sampled occurred during a “break” in the music, as in the Amen break, which is a drum solo from “Amen, Brother” by The Winstons. However, it is a common thought that the name derives from the beat being “broken” and unpredictable compared to other percussive styles, something which is also reflected in the name of the related genre broken beat. Whether this was part of the original meaning of the word or is purely a folk etymology remains unclear, but it is safe to say that the term has evolved to encompass both sentiments.” Beginning with the most notable Phish breakbeat track, “Birds Of A Feather,” we examine the band’s usage of this technique before diving into the history of breakbeat culture & its impact on popular music. Wade is a fantastic host who guides us through a world we’ve loosely touched on on BTP, but never fully dived into. Bringing music into the classroom can help kids explore the mind-body connection and become comfortable with self-expression. Sadly, many children’s music programs are lacking in the resources they need to let kids explore this creative space. That’s why Osiris is happy to partner with The Mockingbird Foundation.Founded in 1996, The Mockingbird Foundation is a volunteer-run non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to music education for America’s youth. Each year, the Foundation awards grants to dozens of music education programs, and funds those grants through a combination of fundraising, publishing, and the curation of Phish.net, one of the earliest Internet fan communities.Mockingbird is entirely volunteer, with no staff, no salaries, and no office — so every dollar really does make a difference in providing children’s music programs with the staffing, instruments, and support they need. The foundation gives over 100–150,000 dollars every year in grants. To donate or to learn more, visit mbird.org. This episode features Rob's interview with guitarist and songwriter John Kadlecik, who comes roaring out the gate with some strikingly candid commentary on previous songwriter collaborations. John talks about how it feels as though "ancient intelligence" takes over during improvisation, about how while in Furthur he was able to find his space between the approaches of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh (from tempo to touring preferences) and playfully speaks of Mickey Hart "raiding" a Hunter lyric John had put to song. John talks about his early days, particularly one early teacher's response to John's interest in learning how to improvise on violin. He also talks about his various pre-Dark Star Orchestra musical outfits, and some of the decision points behind initially committing his musical life to, and the eventual evolution of DSO. John and Rob move through a ton of topics, spending a bit of time on JK's On The Road release in general, with John shedding particular light on the story behind "The Hanging of John Collins" in particular. We even learn of how John attended Phish's Clifford Ball as a guest of the band's drummer Jon Fishman, of how JK was surprised to learn that his own musical ethos was in some part an echo of that of Bach, about his experience playing Radio City Music Hall with Furthur in the immediate wake of Weir and Lesh learning of the death of "Bear" Owsley and about the time John met John Barlow. The episode ends with a skeletal version of "So Blue" which John wrote with Robert HunterwTnS Sponsors:Polay + Clark21st Century Accounting (Don't wait till April and get screwed, get Polayed)www.polayclark.comInside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.comTwitter: @InsideoutWTNSInstagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtnsFacebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this first episode of the Room 214 Podcast, I sit down with Mr. Jon Fishman, sixth grade teacher at North Broward Prep School in Coconut Creek, FL. In addition to his decades of classroom experience, Jon and I also discussed his work with musical productions and club advising, as well as his educational philosophy and approach to lesson planning. We touched on everything from building relationships with students the ongoing debate on teachers and school employees carrying guns. It was a blast sitting down with, thank you so much for giving it a listen!

InsideOut wTnS debuts on the Osiris Podcast Network (www.osirispod.com) with an "Awards-show" style 50th episode. Hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner play and discuss four categories of clips. After a "Best Reveal" start, the hosts in typical fashion choose to poke fun at themselves with the remaining categories - "Worst Interruption," "Worst Question," and "Worst Reveal." Amidst these categories are four "Best" performances from previous episodes which feature exclusive live songs from Sam Bush, Randall Bramblett and Kevn Kinney as well as an episode-closing one from Geoff Achison. The other categories feature portions of previous episodes featuring Col. Bruce Hampton, Jon Fishman, Brendan Bayliss, John Bell, Simon Allen, Marcus King, Jennifer Hartswick, Joel Cummins, Marc Brownstein, Al Schnier and others See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

wTnS sits down with Jon Fishman from the band Phish for a short but sweet interview. The episode starts with Seth and Rob first discussing their new live series (Inside Out wTnS Live) set to take place at the Atlanta's City Winery. The debut is on August 9th with a Jerry Garcia Tribute. Turner then quizzes Weiner on his Phish'y 40th Birthday gift, graciously arranged by his wife, Amy. They then play the entire Jon Fishman interview from backstage at Atlanta's Fox Theater May 1, 2017. Much of the early part of the interview focuses on Col. Bruce Hampton, as it was conducted the afternoon of that glorious-became-tragic event. Fishman also talks about "gauzing," re-learning his own material, a Capt. Beefheart song he would love to have Phish cover and which Halloween cover record provided him the biggest challenge preparation-wise. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This is not an episode. This is a tribute to the man who breathed Zambi life into this program and into just about every conscious person in the organic music world, Col. Bruce Hampton. Hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner were the only journalists set up backstage at the Hampton 70! Tribute at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre May 1, 2017. In cosmic keeping with the truly singular history of The Colonel, the event remains one of the most powerfully joyous musical evenings in Atlanta entertainment history, despite the fact that it ended with the death of the man being celebrated. A tragedy to all in attendance except perhaps the man who began his journey to the beyond in arguably his own ideal fashion, on stage with his favorite musicians, shining a light on an outstanding young player and goofing on just about everyone in attendance while the band played on. In this episode the hosts share some of their own thoughts, and then portions of some of the many interviews they conducted at The Fox that day. Here, The Colonel’s friends Jeff Sipe, John Bell, Jon Fishman and Rev. Jeff Mosier talk about all things Colonel. These musicians who knew him well explain many examples of why Col. Bruce Hampton was widely considered not just a shaman, but a particularly shaman-tastic one, even when he was having tea with other shamans. This program believes that whether you are a musician or a fan who was at The Fox Theatre on that night, the best way to honor The Colonel is to remember the event and his death not with sadness, but with laughter. It was frightening and confusing that night. But as time passes, it should be increasingly revealed that it was even more of a delightfully twisted final exclamation point on a joyfully “outside” life that touched an absolutely stunning array of people. As Jeff Mosier says, “choose gratitude.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 004 takes a trip back to 2009 marking the end of their "breakup" and the start of the 3.0 era. Phish "officially brokeup" fall 2004, following the Coventry Festival. The "breakup" lasted 8/15/04 to 3/6/09, 1664 days, just more than twice as long as the hiatus, but apparently long enough - for Trey, and the fans. - from Phish.net - http://phish.net/faq/breakup Subscribe to the podcast and feel free to make a small donation to keep the jams coming.
