Donald Macleod explores the early years in Benjamin Britten's creative storyBenjamin Britten was one of the most influential British composers of the 20th century, with celebrated works such as 'Peter Grimes', 'Friday Afternoons' or 'A Simple Symphony'. Music infused his very first moments in life and he started to develop his musical instincts from a very early age. Many of his future masterpieces can be traced back to the inspiration of his youth. This week, Donald Macleod explores these crucial early years in Britten's creative story, from his birth under the star of St Cecilia to his departure for America at 25 years old.Music featured:Hymn to St Cecilia, Op 27 Four Sea Interludes, Op 33a (from 'Peter Grimes') A Charm of Lullabies, Op 41 (arr for voice and orchestra by Colin Matthews) Five Waltzes Beware! The first edition of PHANTASYMIX in 2025 arrives courtesy of London's much-loved Ariane V, a DJ and radio host who represents a new vanguard of generous selectors with an audible appreciation for dance music with depth and character. Beginning with a three-year stint building her taste and record collection from behind the counter at Phonica Records, Ariane's knowledge and instincts for a great record have only deepened in the decade since. as exemplified not only by a tour schedule that has taken from London to Paris, Berlin and Barcelona, but weekly to Peckham, where her previous residency for Balaami FM saw her sharing the decks and the mic in conversation with DJs including Wallace, Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Mr. Ho and Moxie. Taking keen cue from Phantasy's undercurrent of a ‘psychedelic sensibility', Ariane V's PHANTASYMIX blends the likes of Prince, CC:DISCO, Josh Caffe, Hardway Bros and more. Photo credit: Alex Rimmer
Ruben Amaro Jr. tells a Phillies Phantasy Camp story and we continue the Eagles talk taking calls.
Since their inception in 2018, Talking Drums have provided some of the most inventive, quietly sophisticated and all round highly sought-after dancefloor cuts on vinyl, providing an “a home for poorly executed dance moves, misjudged vibes and narcotic bravery.” Emanating from Manchester's musical centre, and blurring the boundaries between edits and otherwise, Phantasy are delighted to have the minds behind jump from wax and into our long-running mix series… “We took a break from our full time hobby inventing increasingly idiotic DJ names to lay down a little bit of cosmic wobble, wormhole funk, daft disco and TD XXXclusives. Illicit edits, remixes for friends and a little OG energy suitable for all ages and most situations. Many thanks to the marvellous folks at Phantasy Sound for inviting us into their orbit.”
I've got an EXTENDED First 30 Mix featuring house and minimal tech from Loy, JP Elorriaga, & more…after that, it's DnB time with tunes by Dylan Dylan, Submerse, & others…Wrapping it up in my DISC 2 segment is Pugilist! ⚡️Like the Show? Click the [Repost] ↻ button so more people can hear it!

On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is William Apple. William is Founder of Aion Psychodynamic Coaching and with a passion for understanding the depths of the human psyche, and a commitment to personal growth and transformation, William offers a unique approach to coaching and mentoring that transcends traditional "Life Coaching" paradigms. William's most influential Teacher, and Mentor by proxy - within the realms of Psychology - would be Carl Jung. Like Jung, William has found a devotion within himself to explore and cultivate an intimacy with Psyche, and Her Mother, The Unconscious, and this Intimacy is driven by a likewise strict devotion to the Child of Logos, Analysis. All of which likewise led William naturally towards Traditional Western Alchemy and Mysticism; making Carl Jung William's most naturally aligned "professor". In this deep and brilliant episode we explore how to journey with ‘inner child' work and ‘shadow work' (rather than the phantasy of ‘quick fixes') for deep healing. We dived into the psychological reasons we tend to favour ‘quick fix' approaches to healing, what we mean by ‘real' inner-child work - and how curiosity, intimacy and self-illumination are key to healing and realising our magic. Listen to the end - William shares truthfully at the end that becoming a healer is one of the most challenging callings we can have, sharing why healing ourselves is important along the way. What You'll Learn from this Episode: Our biggest wounding comes from the ‘unlived life of our parents' which leaves us with unmet needs that become our wounds - and this can be healed with ‘true' inner child work. The challenge is, much ‘inner child work' is often related to from a place of ‘quick fix' projection and phantasy by modern coaching and self-help industries - ideas of ‘go play with your little girl' embodiment practices - which are helpful in some ways, but often lack the depth of healing Caveating that ‘real' is our own projection, William explores that how he sees the ‘real' journey of healing is grounded in a lifelong journey of understanding our biases, projections and conditionings - and ‘phantasies' - with loving, curious self-illumination - which some could call the ‘deep work' Projection is not a ‘bad thing' - we have projected onto ‘projection' if we think it is! It is a great thing to get curious about - we are even projecting things that we deem to feel ‘good' (because that reveals where we have met an unmet need) As aspiring healer witches, we have been called to no easy task - the work of healing ourselves isn't easy (and is ongoing) *and* as healers, we also have a responsibility for accountability, self-awareness and avoiding projecting of our unmet needs Common fears of becoming a healer - including fear of failure, self-doubt and fear of being judged and abandoned are rooted in shame, and can be healed through deep, loving self-illumination Inner child work, parts work, shadow work and ancestral healing are all serving to help us reclaim our magic - ultimately all offering us a way of deepening intimacy with ourselves Resources and things that we spoke about: William's Website: https://www.aionpsychodynamiccoaching.com/ William's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/will.apple.12 Brene Brown: Daring Greatly - https://brenebrown.com/book/daring-greatly/ Bessel van der Kolk: The Body Keeps the Score - https://www.besselvanderkolk.com/resources/the-body-keeps-the-score David Bedrick: Unashamed your Life - https://www.davidbedrick.com Nicole's Social: Tiktok - @archetypalapothecary Instagram - @iamnicolebarton Instagram - @archetypalapothecary You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/@secretwitchsociety Join our Secret Witch Society: www.facebook.com/groups/secretwitch Nicole's Website: www.nicolebarton.co.uk Thank you for listening, we'd love to know what comes alive for you in this week's episode, so please let us know. Have you considered how alchemy can affect your personal growth and healing? William Apple, a Psychological and Spiritual Mentor, as well as a Psychodynamic Coach, joins Lian as a returning guest to explore the concept of alchemy and its relevance in healing and individuation. They delve into the traditional definition of alchemy as the process of turning lead into gold, and how it's used metaphorically - which is the psychological aspect of alchemy, as described by Carl Jung. They highlight the appeal of alchemy and the tendency for people to project their fantasies and unmet needs onto the concept. They also discuss the shadow side of alchemy, including the dangers of misunderstanding and unintentionally bypassing the work, especially when we dive straight into collective shadow work, instead of beginning with the inner child. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Alchemy is the process of turning lead into gold, both literally and metaphorically - psychological alchemy, as described by Carl Jung, involves the work of becoming conscious of our internal processes in service of individuation. The appeal of alchemy lies in the recognition of a natural inclination towards wholeness and the desire to refine and transform ourselves, however there is a danger in projecting fantasies and unmet needs onto the concept of alchemy, as it can prevent us from engaging honestly in the real work. It is important to understand the lineage and historical context of alchemical teachings to avoid appropriation and make-believe. Begin with the inner child - recognising the oppressed child within - is essential in any true shadow alchemy. This is why we need to work with the personal shadow before we begin the work of the collective shadows that we all share. This week's show is with William Apple. William Apple is a Psychological and Spiritual Mentor, as well as a Psychodynamic Coach. The Foundation of his Work is rooted in Carl Jung's Concept of “Individuation”, and takes a new approach towards fostering a conscious relationship with that Process by quantifying a Depth Psychological and Psychoanalytic approach to the Inner Child as a Precursor to Shadow Work. He is Certified in CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and Polyvagal Theory, and his Inner Child Work is strongly influenced by Alice Miller, D.W. Winnicott, Jacque Lacan, Marion Woodman, Magda Gerber, Bell Hooks, and many others. In this conversation, William and I explored, Phantasy vs Fantasy, what is meant by each, how to know which you're engaging in, and how to work with them consciously. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: Phantasy means the spectres of the past are being projected onto the world, whereas Fantasy means what we generally think of the word - conscious engagement of imagining things (and being honest and accountable about that). Once this distinction between the two types is clear, it allows us to see more clearly how we show up in the world, not just to others but to ourselves. We rarely see others for who they are, we see them for who we phantasise them to be. Projections are the non-verbal hopes, dreams and expectations of what we hope that world will be like so we can feel safe. The hopes, dreams and expectations are coming from the spectres of the past - which are unmet needs from childhood which are now being projected out onto others and the world. The work of consciously working with our phantasies means being accountable for them, without shame, blame and guilt. Reclaiming and remembering how to consciously fantasise with our active imagination, particularly with our projections, can be so healing and also fun! From deep pools of ambience to the brain-feeding mechanisms of electro and techno, Nadia Struiwigh's gift is in expressing herself with conviction through her machines. As an accomplished live artist and producer, her affinity for synthesis and sequencing results in a spellbinding strain of electronica drawn from a richly personal sonic space she has marked out for herself. Struiwigh's recorded output has appeared on labels like Central Processing Unit, Nous'klaer Audio and Dekmantel - albums and EPs which reach from crunchy sequenced beats to vast swathes of pure, melodic tones. Her roots in Rotterdam and current location in Berlin equally speak to her affinity for techno - propulsive, dynamic machinations which manifest in DJ sets as well as live hardware performances. As a teenager enthralled with the Warp school of electronica and leftfield downtempo, Struiwigh was set on a path of discovery where the intricacy of production met with her impassioned, intuitive approach to composition. Her exacting approach to the technical aspects of the craft has earned her the knowledge to extract her own voice from any medium, but more importantly her music emerges from a very human need to communicate and connect. That connection is best manifested outside the studio. Struiwigh's live sets range from patient, beatless immersions to kinetic peak-time rushes, sometimes straddling the divide in line with her omnivorous passion for ambient and techno alike. At times she'll present her released works in a more patient, listening setting, while for the sensory overload of the dancefloor she tends towards a more improvised, open-ended approach to techno and electro. The exact make up of her live rig changes from gig to gig, keeping her inspired and ensuring no two performances are the same. High-profile shows in concert halls sit alongside strobe lit club sessions - she's since become a resident DJ for Tresor to indulge her love of driving, psychedelically-charged techno, while warm-up sets give her the chance to indulge the deeper dimensions of the music she loves. The range of her tastes can be heard across leading platforms such as RA, Phantasy, Bleep and Red Light Radio, who have all invited her to their esteemed mix series'. Plugged into the moment and constantly exploring new dimensions of her sound, Struiwigh champions electronic music as a springboard for possibilities. With an exquisite clarity which comes from both technical skill and clear-eyed intention, her music thrives on heart and experimentation, powered by machines with as much character as the human at the controls. The story of phantasy (with a ‘ph') forms the basis of this latest Footnote episode, a term that is as muddy and complex as its more familiar ‘f' counterpart. Whereas ‘fantasy' is associated with carefree, escapist enjoyment in the imagination, phantasy describes a process of meaning making within the human psyche, and is a psychological act that is a regular part of our engagement with - and understanding of - the world. In Alex's 10-minute survey of the term, topics include its relationship to the language of psychoanalysis; the pleasurable frivolity and creativity of fantasy vs. phantasy's more pointed link (as a basic mechanic of how our brains work) to the imagination of situations that are not happening in front of us; and the implications of applying psychoanalytic theory and phantasy to the study of fantasy cinema. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Klonoa is a 3D side-scrolling action game series whose first title was released by Namco in 1997. Set in a unique universe populated by a range of original characters, the game follows the hero, Klonoa, as he sets off on a journey to save the world. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first title in the series, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a remastered title combining both Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil.QuipScope is where we provide our thoughts and impressions while discussing how we're getting on with the latest video game releases. Time to live the live of a cool kid. This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill react to some breaking Nintendo news, review a lackluster collection, and gush about a promising retro revival. First up, it's time to break down some of the latest and greatest reveals in the world of the Big N–namely, the announcement of a new OLED model special edition and the reveal of an over-the-top LEGO Bowser that might just be the best thing released this year, in general. But then, of course, we can't stay positive for long–it's Klonoa time. Next up, Marc reviews the underwhelming package that is Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series–a collection of two cult-classic Klonoa platformers that may just sport the worst title of a game in recent memory. While this package introduces a few enhancements like HD graphics, it hardly celebrates the franchise the way fans have been wanting, and its additions are barely enough to ease newcomers into this long-running series. But not all hope is lost–for the final segment, the hosts share their thoughts on the recent free demo of Live a Live. This title is not only a remake of a beloved (former Japan-exclusive) Square RPG from 1994, but it is also one of the best showcases of the HD2D art style yet. The demo showcases the game's unique nonlinear storytelling and distinctive art style, so it's safe to say that the gang is already hooked ahead of the game's full release later this month. I'm torn on what to call this episode...because there are so many good SM quotes. Are there more legitimate reasons to like Macy Gray other than her brief appearance in the 2001 film Spider-Man? Probably, but that's why we love her, and it's good enough for us. This week we're heading back to the late 90s to take on Macy Gray and Natalie Imbruglia!
