We asked music journalist Allison Rapp to pick an album to chat about from the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest list and she picked... something from John Mayer?!?It's true. We're reviewing Continuum, an album that barely makes the list at #486, from an artist that receives a lot of (unearned?) scoffing. Will Allison's pick make Mayer fans of Eamon and Nathan? Is this the first time we've completed all the albums that a group created on our podcast? It just might be, as we spend time with The Jimi Hendrix Experience for their second album, our THIRD to review on this list of the greatest albums. There is a clear correlation to John Mayer here (we talk about that) and you can see something building from their debut (Are You Experienced?), through this one, to their final album (Electric Ladyland). What did we think, and how does this fit with these three incredible albums from a guitar virtuoso? We'll press play, drop the needle, and find out more! As a reminder, you can find our favorite songs from the RS500 on our Spotify playlist right here - we'll be updating it as we go with our favorite songs from each album! durée : 00:32:00 - Les Nuits de France Culture - En 1990 dans l'émission "Jimi Hendrix : les albums d'un visionnaire", Bruno Feller dit son admiration pour Hendrix et analyse ses albums. In addition, the guys cut loose talking consumer slogans that we just can't quit, the best BBQ restaurants in the southeast and Minneapolis, and taking in a show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater. In addition, Rob has a habit that Aaron declares is the weirdest thing he has ever heard on the podcast.      Then at (48:00) we talk about Jimi Hendrix's third album on the list, Axis: Bold as Love. We discuss the jazz influence on this album, what direction Hendrix would have taken had he lived past 27, and how Jimi Hendrix ruined Eric Clapton's life. We also run down the best songs not sung by the lead singer. The conversation on this episode is truly slow roasted.   Call or text 802 277 BECK.  Don't be a brat! The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Axis: Bold as Love This week’s guest, drummer, author and clothing designer Terry James Graham (The Gun Club, The Bags, The Cramps) dug deep into his rock-n-roll past to discuss a record that got him blissfully and endlessly high, “Axis: Bold as Love” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. After the success of his mind-blowing debut, Jimi Hendrix – along with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell - returned a mere 7 months later with a more eclectic, sophisticated outing that showcased his growth as a songwriter and musical visionary. It was a great conversation, and the three of us did our utmost best to do this musical work of art justice AND wave our freak flags high! We conclude the story of Jimi Hendrix starting with "Axis" Side 2, which has one of the most beautiful songs Jimi ever wrote, "Castles Made of Sand." We talk about the techniques and gear Jimi used, what it was that made him such a good guitarist, and how things took a turn for The Jimi Hendrix Experience after the release of "Axis" in the U.S. We'll also talk about Jimi's drug use, downward spiral, his untimely death in 1970, and the legacy of the world's greatest guitarist five decades later.

We all know Jimi Hendrix, one of the most legendary and influential musicians to ever walk the planet. But there's a lot about his life we don't hear about. In this episode, we talk about Jimi's rough childhood and life before he had a guitar in his hands, his time in the Army's 101st Airborne Division, and rise to music fame in the late '60s. We'll end with a track analysis of "Axis" Side 1, including two of my all-time favorite Hendrix tracks: "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Little Wing." Episode I of II.

Jimi Hendrix is easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time. His live shows, whether at the Monterrey Pop Festival or at Woodstock are apart of the American music tradition at this point. We said it twice in this episode: this album features songs you'll probably know and some you should know. It's a staple in Nick's library and it might be one in yours too. Axis: Bold As Love shows a more matured band in the areas you want, while still maintaining that late 60's Hippie rebellious spirit. We hope you dig it, man. Questions of voice, agency, participation and empowerment are central to the practice of community development, and for this reason it has been has been described as a subversive occupation (Ife 2013). Its way of working is to challenge and question the done thing, the taken-for-granted. Yet, funding cuts and structural changes within the field since 2008 have seen the spaces for community work increasingly narrowed and squeezed (Harvey 2015; Community Work Ireland 2017). This situation places community workers in a dilemma: do they cease telling uncomfortable stories and cease being true to the values of community work; do they step away from long term community struggles? This panel details research from the field of community work that speaks back to such restrictive forces as communities and practitioners struggle to find their voices: From the voices of marginalised older men in Dublin city, to a community finding their voice when faced with the threat of fracking and the voices of community workers themselves as they navigate a path for critical practice in neoliberal times. Bringing together three community worker who are engaged in research, this panel seeks, as Okri evocatively suggests, to ‘breach and confound the accepted frontier of things’ by amplifying unseen voices and placing them at the centre of conversations about social change in Ireland. Dave Donovan is a PhD researcher in the Department of Applied Social Studies in Maynooth University. His research is a narrative study of community workers professions. He lives and works in Galway city.

Welcome, mama, to the Bold as Love podcast! I'm Karine Bell, and I'm a mama on a journey of motherhood I, honestly, never anticipated.  It's challenged me like NOTHING else has, but it's been probably one of the most powerful avenues I've ever traveled for waking up and growing up to my life so that I could parent the way I most deeply wished to.  But, more than that, I've realized how, on this journey, I've also given birth to an entirely new experience of myself in this life, and for that I could be more grateful.  My work is focused around what it means to claim your ability to author your own life experiences and also to become empowered to break with the momentum of past conditioned patterns and learning to make way for something new for yourself, and for your children going forward.  We're creating a new legacy through the work that we do to be awake to our lives, and this has the ability to impact future generations.  This is the introductory episode where you can meet me and hear a little about my motivation for starting this podcast. I hope that it serves as a source of education, inspiration, and perspective-shifting reflection to help point you in the direction you want to go and add fuel to your desire to go there.

November. This month on The Writer and the Critic, your valiant hosts, Ian Mond and Kirstyn McDermott, venture forth to the home of their special guest: Galactic Suburbian, Alex Pierce. Having been rewarded with red wine and orange cake, they discuss the origins of Galactic Suburbia as well as the future of its brand new sister podcast, Galactic Chat, then proceed to paddle about in the murky waters of genre and gender. Alex admits a literary crush on Alastair Reynolds. Ian confesses mild paranoia about his reading habits. Kirstyn warns that her inner feminist is pretty much permanently on the loose now. Oh, and Happy Birthday, Galactic Suburbia! Alex has chosen Bold As Love by Gwyneth Jones as her book for this month and so begins a rollicking roundtable on rock stars, romance and revolution. For those wishing to avoid spoilers -- and there are quite a few -- the discussion of this novel begins at 22:30 of the podcast and ends around 45:30. The official podcast books for March are My Name is Will by Jess Winfield, which Ian has recommended (but has a little trouble remembering), and Under the Poppy by Kathe Koja, which Kirstyn has chosen (and may or may not squee about). For your convenience once again, the starting points are 45:30 for My Name is Will and 01:00:00 for Under the Poppy. For a final wrap-up and preview of future podcasting goodness, tune back in by 01:31:30. For next month's podcast, Ian has chosen The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz and Kirstyn has picked Liar by Justine Larbalestier. Plus, there will be a third, listener-recommended title: Above/Below by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek. And finally, a heads-up for May when Ian and Kirstyn will be discussing the Black Out / All Clear duology by Connie Willis, as recommended by another listener. With over a thousand pages between the two books, your thoughtful hosts decided to let you know well in advance. See, they really are lovely people! *** Just a reminder that The Writer and the Critic adopts a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that the plucky and generously endowed heroine comes to the realisation that she is simply an avatar trapped within a highly complex but ultimately futile online multi-player gaming system. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats! ***
