D. Scott McLain, CCIM, of Huntsville, Alabama, is Principal and Managing Broker at Coldwell Banker Commercial McLain Real Estate. Scott is a retail developer, advocate for downtown redevelopment, and proponent of adaptive reuse of existing real estate improvements. In June of this year, Scott was lobbying on Capitol Hill with other ICSC members, the national retail real estate association. Kimberly Iler-Morgan, is a Commercial Real Estate Broker in Savannah, Georgia for over 15 years. On Feb. 15 of this past year, at the request of the Georgia Association of Realtors President, Kim Iler-Morgan testified in front of the House Small Business Development Committee on behalf of the Commercial Alliance. They spoke on the increasing difficulty of buying and selling property, especially affordable property.

The construction may be new but the concept and development has been ongoing for more than 2 decades. D. McLain is a retail developer, an advocate for downtown redevelopment, and a proponent of adaptive reuse of existing real – estate improvements. Very active in local, state, and national civic, political, and professional activities, McLain holds a degree in Public Policy from Duke University and a Juris Doctor degree from Cumberland School of Law. Most recently, McLain graduated from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) for the Advanced Management Development Program (AMDP) designation in commercial real estate (2007), and serves on the Harvard GSD Alumni Council.         Scott is a member of ACRE's Leadership Council.

Scott is today’s guest and he shares with us his story of building several successful businesses. After 2 decades of commercial real estate investing with his family, Scott McLain joined the world of single family home investing in 2002 with a few fix and flips. In 2003 he and his brothers bought and wholesaled about 300 properties over the following 4 years. In 2007, he parted ways with his brothers to start a hard money lending business, Red Dirt Lending, and over the next 10 years loaned over $70,000,000. Starting in 2013, he converted the 20 houses he had in inventory from pure rentals to lease-options and was thrilled with the results. Now Scott is building a lease option rental portfolio.
