The Broken Copier
What should homework look like in 2026?

Surveys show students increasingly turning to AI as a tool for their school work. Teachers who want to limit AI usage during instructional time still have many options on table—but what should they do about homework and other assigned out-of-class essays and projects? Given that the topic of homework already has been quite controversial before bringing AI into the conversation, this felt like a good time to exchange ideas about what it can and should mean to assign work outside of the classroom right now. Joining this conversation is Brett Vogelsinger, another high school English teacher who sees things around this topic quite a bit differently than Marcus—which hopefully is the makings of a meaningful discussion. Brett is the author of two books, Poetry Pauses and Artful AI in Writing Instruction, and is also starting a new Substack newsletter: Declarative, Imperative, Interrogative, Explanatory. (If you follow The Broken Copier, this is definitely something you should consider subscribing to!)Thanks, as always, to Alberto Lugo, one of Jim's former students, for writing and recording original intro music; and Tom Csatari for allowing us to use his band's recording of “Woodstock” from their 2020 album, Garden.* Find Tom's work at uncivilizedtom.com, and on Instagram @banduncivilized.* Find Alberto's work at djsynchro.weebly.com, and on Instagram @djsynchro.You can email us here with feedback or any other questions as well: thebrokencopier@substack.com. In this episode, Cara and Chris sit down with Dr. Ben Auerbach, a Professor in the Departments of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Anthropology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His research examines variation and evolution through the skeletons of primates and other mammals, applying quantitative genetics and functional anatomy to understand how traits evolve, especially in primates and Australian marsupials. He also studies variation in global human samples from archaeological and medical contexts, as well as the history and ethics of the biological and social sciences. The conversation centers on his 2023 paper in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology advocating a “whole organism imperative.” Rather than analyzing traits one at a time, he argues that evolutionary questions require multi-trait quantitative genetic approaches that account for covariance among features. We discuss why trait-by-trait adaptationist stories can be misleading, how to distinguish genetic drift from selection, and what this framework reveals about human limb evolution and ecogeographic patterns. ------------------------------ Find the work discussed in this episode: Auerbach, B. Diagnosing Your Capital Asset Health: Why Asset Visibility Is the New Financial Imperative in Healthcare

I Don't Care with Kevin Stevenson

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2026 25:02

Hospitals and surgery centers own millions of dollars in equipment — but owning assets and having actionable visibility into them are two different things. Most systems maintain inventories, yet many struggle with outdated records, fragmented tracking, and limited insight into useful life or service contracts. With nearly half of U.S. hospitals reporting negative operating margins in recent years, that gap between ownership and visibility is no longer just an operational nuisance — it's a financial risk.So here's the real question healthcare leaders are asking: How can we measure the true health of our capital assets — and what does that mean for long-term revenue stability? That's the question at the heart of this episode of I Don't Care. Host Dr. Kevin Stevenson sits down with Grant Luke, Strategic Account Manager at CapExpert, to explore how healthcare organizations can diagnose their capital asset health. The conversation dives into the operational blind spots that drive unnecessary spending and how AI-powered inventory technology is helping hospitals and ASCs gain baseline visibility over their medical equipment, service contracts, and lifecycle data.Top insights from the talk…Many organizations unknowingly repurchase equipment they already own due to lack of system-wide visibility. Without a reliable, consolidated inventory across facilities or departments, teams often buy new devices instead of reallocating existing assets — driving redundant capital spend.Surplus and underutilized equipment consumes valuable space and capital that could be redeployed more strategically. Idle devices sitting in storage rooms or clinical areas tie up square footage, inflate depreciation schedules, and represent missed opportunities for resale or redistribution within the system.Vendor fragmentation and non-standardized preventive maintenance contracts create avoidable financial waste. When multiple vendors service similar equipment across locations, organizations lose leverage, complicate oversight, and miss opportunities for consolidation and cost containment.Grant Luke is a healthcare technology and SaaS leader with more than a decade of experience spanning sales, ASC operations, IT project management, and supply chain strategy. He has held leadership roles with organizations including Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA Health), United Surgical Partners International (USPI), and HST Pathways, where he led ASC innovation initiatives, EHR implementations, operational efficiency projects, and enterprise vendor evaluations. Now serving as Strategic Account Manager at CapExpert, Luke helps ambulatory surgery centers leverage AI-driven supply chain and asset visibility solutions that deliver measurable cost savings, operational efficiency, and strong first-year ROI.

Canada's quantum leadership will not be decided in the lab. It will be decided by who can scale, secure, and deploy. At this Defence Series event, the Empire Club convened Lisa Lambert (CEO, Quantum Industry Canada), Lieutenant-General Darcy Molstad (Commander, Canadian Joint Forces Command), Francesco Bova (Rotman School of Management), and David Roy-Guay (CEO, SBQuantum) to address Canada's quantum imperative at a pivotal moment. This conversation reveals why quantum matters now. GPS denial in contested environments. Encrypted communications harvested for future decryption. Stealth capabilities eroding under passive quantum sensors. These are present-tense operational vulnerabilities, not distant predictions. Canada's first Defence Industrial Strategy explicitly names quantum as a sovereign capability—but naming isn't enough. The panel explores how Canada holds structural advantages: one-third of global quantum workforce, second-highest number of quantum companies worldwide, mature research ecosystem. Yet the familiar pattern looms—foundational science and talent developed domestically, then industrial scale and IP captured elsewhere. For quantum, conditions are uniquely aligned to break that pattern, but only if procurement tempo matches technology maturity and government demand pulls industry forward. From NORAD modernization requiring ultra-precise timing and resilient positioning, to post-quantum cryptography migration protecting critical infrastructure, to dual-use applications extending from submarine detection to mineral exploration—this conversation connects defense imperatives to economic sovereignty.View, listen, and subscribe for more thought leadership from Canada's most essential forum. Season 5 of I Am Dad Podcast continues its deep dive into the systems shaping modern fatherhood—and this conversation is one for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates alike. Host Kenneth Braswell welcomes Christopher Brown, longtime leader in the national fatherhood movement and president of National Fatherhood Initiative. Together, they discuss the groundbreaking report The $154 Billion Man, which reframes father absence not only as a moral and social issue, but as an economic one. The report conservatively estimates that the federal government spends over $154 billion annually supporting single-mother households across 14 major assistance programs—a figure that has risen more than 50 percent (inflation-adjusted) since 2008. This episode goes beyond the numbers. Brown and Braswell examine: Why capacity building—not just programming—is essential How culture change within agencies determines sustainability The role of marriage and relationship stability in child outcomes Why younger generations of fathers are redefining fatherhood identity The urgent need for national convening and preservation of institutional knowledge in the fatherhood field If you care about strengthening families, influencing public policy, or building sustainable fatherhood programming, this conversation offers both data and direction.

Leading the way for systems change: Helena Helmersson on making sustainability a core business imperative

Few leaders in the apparel and textiles industry bring as much hands-on experience across buying, production and CSR as Helena Helmersson did during her time at H&M Group. Her unique position as the only fashion industry executive to move from CSO to CEO gives her a rare, end-to-end view of how sustainability and commercial strategy intersect at scale. Helmersson's long-term vision at H&M was clear: sustainability had to be embedded at the heart of the business. Building on work initiated in the 1990s, she helped advance a strategy that increased supply chain transparency, while also expanding textile collection and recycling programmes. Under her leadership, initiatives such as the H&M Conscious range were debuted, reinforcing the belief that sustainable fashion must remain accessible while serving as co-chair of The Fashion Pact. A consistent theme throughout Helmersson's leadership has been the need for structural transformation. Sustainability, she argues, should be a mindset that is woven into every part of the organisation. In times of external turbulence, however, delivering on that ambition becomes harder. Helmersson is clear that progress cannot be achieved through brand commitments alone; new systems need to be built, and deep, cross-industry collaboration is essential. Since stepping down as CEO of H&M in January 2024, Helmersson has continued to shape the industry. She has joined the boards of MANGO, Quizrr and On, and serves as Chair of Circulose. In this webinar with built in Q&A time, Helena Helmersson shared reflections on: What leadership looks like when driving structural change within large organisations What enables, and inhibits, CEO action on sustainability, including navigating the tension between profitability and sustainability Collaboration in practice: how deep coalitions can work for business Where the industry goes next, and the role each stakeholder must play in delivering change

Starting in the autumn of 2025, the US began attacking small civilian boats in or near Venezuelan waters, summarily executing over 126 people. January, 2026 began with it kidnapping Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, and bringing them to the US. This month, just weeks after the kidnapping, Haymarket Books published the immensely useful and urgent book, Venezuela in Crisis. The historical range of the book begins with the regime of Hugo Chavez and ends with the 2024 elections in Venezuela. We are immensely fortunate to be able to speak with the editor and translator of this collection of essays, Anderson Bean, and two of its contributors, Emiliano Terán and Simón Rodríguez.  The key argument of the book is that, even by his own admission, Chavez was not able to completely transform Venezuela into a socialist state. The book explains the roots of this failure, despite the inspiring successes of Chavismo. It then tracks an ever-increasing neoliberal and oppressive trend carried forward by Maduro, which is characterized by burgeoning extractivism, corruption, and suppression of human rights.  We end by calling on socialists and progressives everywhere to resist the tendency to side with Maduro's false claims to socialism, and to focus instead on building solidarity with the people of Venezuela.Anderson Bean is a sociology professor at North Carolina A&T State University, a member of the Tempest Collective, and a North Carolina–based activist and editor. He is a contributor to Venezuela in Crisis: Socialist Perspectives (Haymarket Books) and the author of Communes and the Venezuelan State: The Struggle for Participatory Democracy in a Time of Crisis (Lexington Books).Simón Rodríguez is a Venezuelan socialist writer and journalist. He was a student organizer and later became professor at the Universidad de los Andes. When he was a member of the national leadership of the Socialism and Freedom Party, he ran as a candidate for the National Assembly in 2015. He is a founding member of Laclase.info and Venezuelanvoices.org and has published articles in Humania del Sur, NACLA Report on the Americas, The New Arab, and Rebelión and on dozens of electronic outlets, and his articles have been translated into six languages. He has given talks and lectures in Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. He is coauthor with Miguel Sorans of the book Why Did Chavismo Fail? A Left-Opposition Balance Sheet.Emiliano Terán is a sociologist from the Central University of Venezuela and has a master's degree in ecological economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is a PhD candidate in environmental science and technology at the same institution. He is also an associate researcher at the Center for Development Studies in Venezuela and a member of the Observatory of Political Ecology of Venezuela

With more than 30 years of experience each, Mark and Jeff bring deep insight from working across industries including healthcare, technology, automotive, consumer goods, and professional services.Mark and Jeff share their professional journeys and the “red thread” that has guided their careers: a commitment to understanding customers as humans, not just data points. From early roles in marketing, operations, and consulting, both authors describe moments when they realized organizations often make decisions without considering how customers truly experience them. That realization ultimately led to the founding of WideOpen and the development of the frameworks outlined in their book. The conversation centers on The CX Imperatives and its purpose as a practitioner's guide for CX leaders and professionals who already care about customer experience and want to embed customer centricity across the enterprise. Rather than focusing on one-off “wow moments,” the book emphasizes creating consistent, meaningful experiences across the entire customer journey that align with business strategy and drive growth and innovation. Importantly, the authors stress that the principles are industry-agnostic, applicable to both B2B and B2C organizations of all sizes.Mark outlines the book's five strategic CX practices:Insights – deeply understanding customers as emotional, human beings, not just metrics;CX Strategy – aligning customer insights with business objectives to focus effort where it matters most;Blueprinting – translating strategy into operationally actionable designs;Operating Model – enabling cross-functional collaboration through roles, processes, and shared accountability; andCulture – ensuring employees understand, believe in, and are equipped to deliver the intended experience.Through real-world examples, including healthcare, Mark and Jeff demonstrate how engaging frontline employees and embedding CX into culture can generate both tangible outcomes (cost savings, growth initiatives) and intangible benefits (employee ownership, sustainability, and trust). The discussion also explores the connection between internal culture and external customer experience, with both guests agreeing that consistently poor CX is often a symptom of internal organizational challenges. They share practical advice for CX leaders navigating varying levels of leadership support, emphasizing the importance of meeting stakeholders where they are and addressing resistance with empathy and clarity. To bring CX to life, Mark and Jeff each share standout customer experiences—from thoughtful airline journey improvements to an unexpectedly empowering healthcare onboarding experience—illustrating how intentional design can transform how customers feel. The episode wraps with personal insights into the tools, books, and mindsets that inspire them today, reflections on why this is an exciting time for the CX discipline, and where listeners can connect with them and learn more about their work, workshops, and book. This episode is a must-listen for leaders and practitioners looking to move beyond surface-level CX and build customer-centered enterprises that deliver sustainable value for both customers and the business.

That darn data. It's so complicated and fragmented and gap-filled and noisy that no amount of time is ever enough to truly get to the bottom of all of its complexity. As a result, it's pretty easy to fill all of our time handling as much of that underlying data messiness as possible. At what cost, though? It's easy for the analyst's connection to the business to suffer as they get mired (too) deeply in the data and lose sight of the broader business needs. In this episode, the gang had a chat about business acumen—what it is, how to develop it, and why it's a must-have for any data or analytics role. In this episode of the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, Sean V. Bradley sits down with Gina Anguilla of CallSource for a conversation that challenges how most dealerships think about their service department, and the role the Service BDC plays behind the scenes. Not only that, we uncover if you're missing out on thousands of dollars of potential revenue! "Fixed ops should be 65% of the dealership's overall revenue. And if you're doing it the right way, your fixed ops revenue should cover 100% of all of your operational expenses." – Sean V. Bradley This isn't a surface-level discussion about appointments or scripts. It's a deeper look at how service operations, customer communication, and long-term retention quietly determine whether a dealership thrives or struggles. Sean and Gina explore why treating service like a silo is costing dealers more than they realize, and why the smartest operators are starting to rethink the entire ecosystem! "Having a service BDC ensures that there's a managed process for keeping communication timely, efficient, and effective with your guests." – Gina Anguilla From overlooked touchpoints to missed opportunities hiding in plain sight, this episode shines a light on the side of the dealership that truly keeps everything moving. If you've ever wondered why some stores build loyalty effortlessly while others constantly chase new customers, this conversation will make you stop and listen! "We are bringing an ecosystem that drives consistent and predictable service revenue by improving customer retention, communication, and engagement." – Gina Anguilla Because when service works the right way, everything else follows. Tune in… this one might change how you see your dealership. ps. Be sure to register for the CallSource Bourbon Dealer Giveaway at: https://callsourceauto.com/giveaways/   Key Takeaways: ✅ Service BDC Importance: Service departments should be central to a dealership's revenue strategy, facilitating customer convenience and operational efficiency. ✅ Comprehensive Service BDCs: Effective service BDC strategies encompass not only scheduling but also crucial follow-ups, such as post-service customer satisfaction checks and declined services callbacks. ✅ Outsourcing Benefits: Leveraging outsourced BDC solutions, like those offered by CallSource, can alleviate the managerial burden on service teams, enabling dealerships to focus more on results rather than processes. ✅ Customer Retention: Engaging with inactive customers through a structured BDC can significantly increase service retention rates and dealership revenue. ✅ AI and Human Integration: Innovative solutions that combine AI enhancements with human-driven services are revolutionizing the automotive service industry by ensuring consistent customer communication and retention.   About Gina Anguilla Gina Anguilla is a seasoned professional in the automotive industry with a background in communications. She started her career at Dealer Synergy, where she honed her skills in automotive telephony and BDC (Business Development Center) management. Currently, Gina is affiliated with CallSource Automotive, a company renowned for improving service departments through call tracking and management. Her expertise lies in the strategic implementation of outbound and inbound communication processes that enhance customer service and retention in the automotive service sector!   The Critical Role of Service BDC in Optimizing Dealership Performance In the ever-evolving automotive landscape, dealerships must juggle various operational aspects to remain competitive. Among these, the importance of an effective Service Business Development Center (BDC) stands out. Integrating a service BDC addresses multiple dealership challenges, optimizing revenue and enhancing customer satisfaction. This thought leadership article delves into the core aspects of setting up and maintaining a successful service BDC, as highlighted in a recent discussion between Sean V. Bradley and Gina Anguilla. Key Takeaways Efficient service BDCs are pivotal for maintaining dealership revenue and customer satisfaction. Utilizing a specialized service BDC allows dealerships to manage appointment scheduling better and improve CSI scores. Outsourcing the service BDC can alleviate managerial burdens and enhance call handling effectiveness. The Imperative of Service BDC for Dealership Revenue Dealerships have various revenue streams, and fixed operations, including servicing, play a vital role. As Sean V. Bradley points out, "Nada says that fixed ops should be 65% of the dealership's overall revenue." This highlights the monumental contribution that the service department can make to the dealership's financial health. Yet, not all dealerships are equipped with an efficient service BDC to maximize this potential. Bradley argues that a well-structured service BDC can ensure that "more service appointments" get scheduled, aligning them with customer convenience rather than the commission-driven schedules of service writers. Expanding on this, Gina Anguilla notes that service departments are the "bread and butter" of dealerships. By focusing on the customer's needs rather than solely on sales, dealerships can foster an ecosystem that thrives on customer loyalty and repeat business. The repercussions of neglecting a service BDC are far-reaching. Without it, dealerships may struggle to manage operations effectively, thereby compromising customer satisfaction and potential revenue. Emphasizing a holistic approach, Bradley states, "You need to have both sides. You can't be at the gym and just working out your arms." This analogy underscores the need for a balanced focus on both sales and service components. Streamlining Service Scheduling to Enhance Customer Satisfaction A key function of a service BDC is managing service appointments efficiently. The traditional approach often results in service writers scheduling appointments based on their convenience, which is not always customer-centric. Bradley highlights, "A lot of times service writers don't make appointments for service that's the most convenient for the prospect." By employing a service BDC, dealerships can prioritize the customer's convenience, leading to enhanced Customer Service Index (CSI) scores. Anguilla emphasizes, "Having the service, having a BDC or a scheduling department… is the best way to make sure that your customers are serviced, that they're heard." Beyond just ensuring appointments are made, a service BDC facilitates a proactive approach to managing customer needs and dealership goals. By separating responsibilities between inbound scheduling and outbound service reminders, as Anguilla suggests, dealerships can ensure both immediate coordination and long-term customer retention goals are met. Outsourcing: A Strategic Move for Efficient BDC Operations For many dealerships, managing a BDC in-house can become daunting. Recruitment, training, and maintaining staff involve substantial ongoing efforts and financial investment. Outsourcing the BDC emerges as a strategic alternative, as indicated by Bradley and Anguilla. Outsourcing eliminates the need for dealerships to continually manage human resource challenges, allowing them to focus resources on core business activities. Bradley articulates this benefit, noting, "If you're not a service BDC expert, why are you going to fumble through it?" Instead, specialized outsourced BDC services, like those from CallSource, can provide reliable management and expertise. Moreover, outsourcing partners are often equipped with advanced technologies and training programs that in-house teams may lack. Anguilla echoes this sentiment by emphasizing that outsourced services ensure the management of "communication, connection retention" without the dealership bearing the brunt of those tasks. This approach not only improves the efficiency of call handling but also ensures consistent customer communication and service delivery. Building a Future-Ready Service BDC To build a successful service BDC, dealerships should begin by assessing their current service call handling capacities and identifying where improvements can be made. Sean V. Bradley and Gina Anguilla provide a pathway forward, where dealerships embrace a structured approach to both inbound and outbound service communication strategies. Introducing a service BDC begins with focusing on the core — efficient service scheduling. From there, expanding into proactive outbound communications such as service follow-ups and management of declined repairs ensures a comprehensive contact strategy. With these foundational elements, dealerships position themselves to improve customer retention and operational efficiency, driving long-term profitability. Increasingly, dealerships recognize that expert partners, equipped with advanced technology solutions and proven strategies, offer valuable support. By outsourcing service BDC operations, they leverage specialized expertise that enhances both customer experience and dealership revenue. With clear benefits in efficiency, cost, and performance, embracing a service BDC — whether through in-house teams or specialized partners — is an investment in a dealership's future success. In the competitive arena of automotive sales and service, a robust Service BDC model is no longer a luxury; it's a necessity for thriving in today's market.     Resources + Our Proud Sponsors: ➼ The Millionaire Car Salesman Facebook Group: Join the #1 Automotive Sales Mastermind Facebook Group with over 29,000 automotive professionals worldwide. In this episode of Building the Base, Hondo Geurts and Lauren Bedula sit down with Ken Bedingfield, Chief Financial Officer and President of Missile Solutions at L3Harris. This episode was recorded on December 6, 2025 at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, CA. Ken discusses his journey across the defense industrial base, from leadership at a traditional prime to serving as the 20th employee and CEO at venture-backed counter-UAS startup Epirus, to his current dual role at L3Harris. The conversation explores the fundamental shift from requirements-driven to capacity-driven defense strategy, and examines how L3Harris operates as the "tweener" between traditional primes and startups by making decisions in days rather than weeks.Five key takeaways from today's episode:Defense has shifted from requirements to capacity: The industry is moving away from chasing the last bit of capability or technology toward building production capacity at scale. Capacity itself has become a deterrent, driven by recognition of current conflicts and the real-world depletion of munitions stockpiles.Commercial contracting models benefit traditional primes too: L3Harris already derives 20% of sales through commercial models and strongly supports acquisition reform including eliminating cost accounting standards, reducing requirements, and expanding commerciality definitions; reforms often assumed to benefit only new entrants.Solid rocket motor production faces unique scaling challenges: Aerojet Rocketdyne's Camden, Arkansas facility spans 2,500 acres with 200 buildings and highly specialized regulations around explosive loads, storage, and safety. Scaling production requires understanding these complexities, suggesting new entrants should consider partnerships rather than building parallel capacity.Successful partnerships require mission alignment over technology hype: L3Harris positions itself as "connective tissue" between technology and mission capability. For example, partnering with Palantir to integrate AI into world-class electro-optic sensors rather than trying to build computer vision capabilities in-house. The key question for partnerships is "are we moving fast enough?"Public companies can innovate with the right focus: L3Harris has self-funded R&D in communications for 20 years without charging the government, and is transitioning other product lines to similar commercial models. While managing quarterly earnings and public market expectations isn't easy, publicly traded companies can find creative ways to invest and move at speed.Claude is AI and can make mistakes. Please double-check responses.

Send us a textVIDEO PODCASTPOWERPOINT NOTESWhat does it really mean to accept Jesus?  "Have you accepted Jesus into your heart?   Have you been saved?  Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior?"  Some may have been asked these questions.   You may have asked them yourself.   But what is the real meaning of these phrases?  What does it really mean "to accept Jesus as your personal savior"?  There is a deeper understanding beyond many common Christian teachings - It also ties in to discovering what real Grace is. It is imperative we understand this not only for our salvation one day in heaven but.....to truly live now.  To be ALIVE.   Not just to merely exist one day after another undtil our heart stops beating.   True joy, peace, freedom, and most importantly Love can be experienced today, here, now.   But it does not come cheaply or easily.    This episode looks at what the word truly says about grace, accepting Jesus, and salvation.   Men stumble because of false teachings and misunderstandings, false traditions passed down from others.   It is most important we constantly return to the word of God to see what He says.  As has become our great joy, we look at clarification and additional understanding that comes from the word in the Book of Mormon  as well as the bible.   Restored Gospel - Scripture Search and Study Resources Contact us:restoredgospelpodcast@gmail.comMusic by Michael Barrett

Americans have been told that working harder is the path to dignity, security, and success. But what if that promise was hijacked? This week, we're revisiting our episode with Professor Elizabeth Anderson, where she exposes how neoliberalism weaponized the “work ethic” — transforming a moral tradition that once honored workers into a system that blames them, exploits them, and rewards extraction over contribution. Drawing from her new book Hijacked, Anderson traces how today's economy punishes labor, glorifies predatory wealth, and rigs the rules against working people — and what it would take to take the work ethic back.
