This talk explores the enduring relevance of medieval Arab philosopher Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), often regarded as the father of sociology and historiography. His magnum opus, the Muqaddimah (1377), written nearly 650 years ago, has significantly influenced both Islamic and Western traditions. Ibn Khaldun's ideas on social solidarity (assabiyah) and the interconnected dynamics of power, economic development, and social justice in his Circle of Equity are especially pertinent today. The lecture reprises a talk delivered at COP-28 at the DIFC, offering insights from Ibn Khaldun and other thinkers such as Adam Smith on addressing contemporary poly-crises, including climate change, inequality, and broader human challenges. The speaker will explore how these historical perspectives can inform our responses to today's most pressing issues. In this episode of the First Day Podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D. sits down with Miguel Lopez, CFRE, Senior Manager of Development at the San Diego Foundation, to discuss the organization's innovative El Camino Fund. Miguel shares his personal motivation for launching the fund, rooted in his experience as a first-generation Mexican American in San Diego. He highlights the Foundation's mission to address the wealth gap within the Latino community, which makes up 1.1 million residents of San Diego County. The El Camino Fund aims to invest $5 million over five years to bolster economic mobility and wealth generation in this community. Miguel outlines the initial steps of the El Camino Fund, which focused on engaging Latino donors, a group historically overlooked by the foundation as philanthropists rather than recipients of aid. He details his process of conducting feasibility studies with Latino community leaders and donors to gauge their perception of the Foundation, discovering that many felt excluded. By reaching out and inviting these leaders to participate, the Foundation began shifting its narrative towards inclusivity, fostering trust through personal, one-on-one connections and transparent conversations about past and present initiatives. The episode further explores the mechanics of the El Camino Fund, which operates as a community-led, pooled philanthropic effort. A Leadership Council of Latino community leaders advises on fund allocation, ensuring that the projects funded—such as workforce development programs and financial education initiatives—are culturally relevant and impactful. Miguel emphasizes the importance of this grassroots approach in building trust and engagement among Latino donors and ensuring the Foundation's long-term connection with the community. Reflecting on his journey, Miguel advises other nonprofits to embrace a human-centered approach, emphasizing the importance of listening and engaging directly with marginalized communities. He highlights that building trust and fostering authentic relationships takes time and patience but can lead to meaningful, long-lasting partnerships. The podcast wraps up with a nod to the broader implications of the El Camino Fund's success in making the San Diego Foundation more culturally relevant, aiming to diversify its philanthropic reach and ensure its initiatives are reflective of the communities it serves.

“I'm only looking forward to what's in front of me, and I feel like a lot of good ball is left." -Devin White The Pivot Training Camp tour is in full swing as we visit NFL cities sitting with players and coaches around the league bringing you exclusive interviews and sideline conversations to get you ready for the football season. In partnership with Fanatics, Ryan, Fred, and Channing stopped by Philadelphia, to sit with one of the newest Eagles in the flock, Super Bowl Champion and Pro Bowler, Linebacker Devin White. The 2019 fifth overall draft pick has spent the past five years of his career as a core member in Tampa's top ranked defense, making headlines this offseason by bidding farewell to his Bucs and heading North to Philly. Devin opens up in a transparent discussion addressing all the rumors, the labels and miscues of recent years that have affected his reputation and tarnished some of the success he had in Tampa which has contributed to his mindset as he starts fresh with The Eagles, even willing to take less money to be in a situation better suited for him. While Saquon Barkley was a marquee signing on the offensive side of the ball, White is his defensive counterpart looking to make an immediate impact and allow his teammates to see him, not just as one of the most talented at his position but as a strong leader too. White's locker room approach has already landed him a spot on Philly's Leadership Council, recognizing that the Eagles were known for drama last season and leaking locker room issues, White hopes to combat that issue and has turned to QB Jalen Hurts and WR AJ Brown to hold each other accountable each day. The Bucs got some great play out of Devin White during their Super Bowl run in 2020, but since then it's been an up-and-down relationship that came to an end this past offseason. Since demanding a trade, rumors have swirled about White's relationship with his former team, and the reasonings behind the change of scenery. We asked him how he confidently pivoted from the loud whispers and began to focus on the quiet wins and sharing advice with others: "Don't believe everything you hear." A lot of that confidence comes from constant communication with mentors at LSU and Buccaneers players, staff, still to this day. Learning from the best of the best has not only given White self-assurance, but also a handful of stories. He tells the guys all about the Bucs locker room with the GOAT Tom Brady, and what went down with former teammate Antonio Brown that day he stormed off the field. Tapping into "Mr. Brady" through example and sharing exclusive stories, Devin is grateful to the future Hall of Fame QB for pouring into the team the way he did, for never settling and always demanding the best out of everyone which helped the team win another Championship. Outside of football, Devin has generated curiosity for his 'cowboy' lifestyle. He owns acres of land and has about 50 horses, an outlet that reflects upon with the guys as a safe space for mental health and escape from everyday pressures of football. His father and brother might no longer be with him physically, but spiritually they guide him towards becoming the higher version of himself and the foundation of his success. The 2021 Pro Bowler may have a chip on his shoulder to get back to the big game, but at the moment he says he is simply having fun playing ball again. And with a stacked roster, the NFC East power house is not drifting in easy, but rather a new focus and energy spurred from the top down starting with QB Jalen Hurts to A.J. Brown to Darius Slay to Saquon to Devin...all of these man have something in common, and that is to win and do whatever it takes to reach highest levels of success. Devin is looking to repeat his Super Bowl journey with his new teammates in Philly. Azolla Ventures invests in breakthroughs that could avert catastrophic climate change. They focus on ventures at the earliest stages, where risk and reward are highest. Their priority is impact first: every investment holds the potential for large-scale greenhouse gas reductions and a more just climate for all. Founded by Prime Coalition and enabled by catalytic capital, they seek out bold entrepreneurs from all corners and embrace opportunities outside of venture norms. Amy Duffuor is the co-founder and General Partner of Azolla Ventures. She is also a Managing Director at Prime Impact Fund, Azolla Ventures' predecessor vehicle. Her professional background spans business, finance, and impact across three continents. Amy has served as a board member for Azolla Ventures portfolio companies Heaten and Carbon Reform, as well as Prime Impact Fund portfolio companies Clean Crop Technologies, Noon Energy, and Ovipost. In addition, Amy serves on the board of the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC); the Leadership Council of Activate, a nonprofit that empowers scientists to bring their research to market to address climate change; the Advisory Council of ReFED, a national nonprofit focused on food waste; and the Advisory Board of GreenTech Noir, a global community for Black people working in sustainability and climate tech. Show Notes: [01:16] -  Amy walks us through the co-founding of Azolla Ventures and how it began with the Prime Coalition and a mission to use catalytic capital to drive climate innovation.  [02:09] -  Catalytic capital is tax exempt, structurally patient and more flexible, and it can be used to de-risk technologies for downstream investors. [05:13] -  Azolla Ventures helps lessen risk through a unique funding model that combines both catalytic capital with more traditional venture capital. [07:04] -  They invest in pre-seed, seed, and Series A rounds in hardware based companies. Hardware requires a longer investing horizon. [07:26] -  There are three key evaluation investment criteria that underscore the importance of catalytic capital in their model. 1. Gigaton scale climate impact. 2. Additionality. 3. Attractiveness to downstream commercial capital. [12:26] -  There are often other investors investing alongside Azolla Ventures. They try to be thoughtful about how they put these syndicates together. [14:39] -  Amy talks about how Azolla sources potential investment partners.  [16:14] -  Azolla has a unique process that begins with a pitch to a member, then a full-team pitch, then it's time for the investment advisory committee who help with the last two steps of additionality and downstream funding. [20:09] -  Most companies raise rounds with 18 to 24 months of runway.  [21:34] -  First tip is to understand what stage your company is at and realize it may not be the right stage for venture capital. [22:43] -  Be confident about demonstrating your expertise but humble about what you don't know. [23:58] -  Be coachable and agile. [24:38] -  The driving motivation for Azolla is large-scale climate impact. [26:08] -  Challenges include the long investment horizon and capital intensity and the project financing valley of death. [29:05] -  Founders need to be commercially minded and focus on customers and partners towards the later stages. [29:53] -  Amy's advice is don't be so focused on the job, be focused on the skill sets that you're gaining. Links and Resources: Azolla Ventures Website Prime Coalition
