International tensions took center stage as the U.S. and Iran exchanged military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz while both sides insisted a ceasefire is still in place. According to U.S. Central Command, American naval ships intercepted what were described as unprovoked Iranian attacks and responded with targeted strikes, while Iran accused the U.S. of violating the truce first—raising global concerns due to the Strait’s importance as a major oil shipping route. On the home front, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Drew Sidora opened up about the very real financial stress surrounding her divorce from Ralph Pittman, revealing fears that the Georgia home they once shared could face foreclosure. Court documents show a significant income disparity between the two, and recent rulings have ordered Sidora to vacate the home, intensifying public conversation around finances, custody, and fairness in high‑profile divorces. The show also welcomed music royalty as legendary R&B singer Stephanie Mills joined the RSMS crew for a wide‑ranging conversation about her career, from starring as the original Dorothy in The Wiz to her close friendship with Michael Jackson, whom she strongly defended against long‑standing allegations. Mills reflected on longevity, legacy, and why performing for loyal fans still matters decades into her career. Closing out the episode, Chris Brown marked a major moment with the release of his 12th studio album, Brown—a 27‑track project packed with high‑profile collaborations. Ahead of the release, Brown shared a heartfelt message thanking fans for sticking with him through a long journey and urging them to enjoy the work he poured into the album, which officially dropped at midnight and immediately sparked buzz across social media. Jazz, in particular, has played a central role in this lineage. From John Coltrane's “Alabama,” to Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln's We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, from Nina Simone's “Mississippi Goddamn” to Charles Mingus' “Fables of Faubus,” jazz has always spoken truth to power. That tradition continues today, ascontemporary jazz musicians compose artistic eulogies for Oscar Grant III, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and George Floyd; celebrate the nation's first Black president; and reaffirm that “Black Is Beautiful,” more than 60 years after the phrase became a unifying call within the Black PowerMovement. Jazz also chronicled the life and journey of Dr. King in real time, beginning with his emergence as a young preacher and activist in the early 1950s, and has continued to honor his legacy in the decades since his life was cut short. On thisspecial episode of Milestones, we explore the role jazz played inadvancing King's philosophy and celebrating his extraordinary impact as one of the most consequential leaders in American history with NEA Jazz Master and four-time GRAMMY-winning artist and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, GRAMMY-winning bassist and vocalist Ben Williams, and GRAMMY-nominated pianist and curator Orrin Evans. Together, with host Angélika Beener, they reflect on pieces like Herbie Hancock's 1969 “I Have a Dream,” and more, examining their cultural impact and role in the musical evolution of jazz. Hip-hop historians T.L. Cross and WBGO's own Stevan Smith also join the conversation, shedding new light on “King Holiday,” the 1986 hip-hop and R&B anthem that united an ensemble of rising stars—from New Edition and Run-DMC to Whitney Houston and Stephanie Mills. With the late Dexter Scott King at the helm, Kurtis Blow was tasked with assembling a collective to create an anthem for thenext generation – one that would honor Dr. King's legacy and serve as the soundtrack for the inaugural MLK holiday celebration, 40 years ago. The iconic scholar, author, global thought leader and visionary Dr. Angela Davis joins as a very special guest, offering remarkable insights on this milestone anniversary.

Shaped by fears of overpopulation and ecological collapse, Stephanie Mills was launched into prominence with her 1969 college commencement vow not to have children. A long-time bioregionalist, Mills reflects on decades of questioning growth and cultivating a rooted relationship with the living world, and explains why bioregional living will become a necessity as global industrial civilization continues to unravel. She finds solace in and advocates for an Epicurean simplicity - choosing the simple pleasures of community, place, and nature. Highlights include: How the conversation around overpopulation has shifted over time and why today's birth-rate panic and pronatalist politics are a retrograde distraction from the deeper failures of growth-based economics; How exposure to bioregionalist ideas and people and a deep desire to reconnect with land led Stephanie from urban San Francisco to rural Michigan in the 1980s; Why our sense of awe and meaning arose within wild and biodiverse habitat and what we lose when nature is reduced to resources that feed the technosphere; Why ecological restoration and bioregionalism are fundamentally community endeavors, grounded in cooperation, mutual aid, and shared stewardship; How learning the natural history, watershed, and foodshed of one's place help us become more bioregional in thought and action; How 'epicurean simplicity' provides a materially simple but inwardly rich approach to living, helping us distinguish needs from wants and avoiding the pain caused by a life of 'getting and spending'. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings.  Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware. After the Pointer Sisters nail “Santa Claus is Comin' to Town,” Santa Redd Foxx and elf Marsha Warfield provide some comedy. Following that, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love sing a Christmas medley with awkward transitions between each song. They kill it so hard, though! Great stuff!Desiree Coleman, Smokey Robinson, and Natalie Cole wow the audience with soulful carols. Of course, the Temptations sing “Silent Night.” There's more comedy bits with Foxx and Warfield, then Run DMC and Stephanie Mills get turns to provide holiday music. Carrie McDowell, Ronnie, Darlene, and the whole crew sing us out!Tubbs? Check. Roz? Of course. Fred Sanford? Only if he can be Santa! So spin your records, put on your tux, and jive to this episode on “Motown Merry Christmas!”Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicGive us a buzz! Arnetia Walker has lit up stages and screens for decades and she joins us this week to review her stunning show biz resume, including her latest entry, Bookie, the Chuck Lorre Max comedy on which she is currently slaying as Grandma. We are also joined by artist and Holocaust Survivor Erika Kahn, a first-hand witness to the consequences of authoritarian rule, scapegoating, and nationally sanctioned brutality. Erika offers vital insight for us in our fight against a dangerous wave of fascism.Orphaned as a child, Arnetia Walker's showbiz career began at New York City's High School for the Performing Arts where her talent and dreams were nurtured and encouraged. Arnetia was embraced by a similar culture of community and support when she won her first Broadway role with Hal Linden in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and then A Raisin in the Sun. Both  Lorraine Hansberry's plays. With a favorable alignment of the stars and talent recognition from Michael Bennet, Arnetia went from understudying Stephanie Mills in The Wiz to co-starring in Dreamgirls… a show within which she ultimately played every starring character. (But not on the same night.) As gifted an actor as she is a singer, Arnetia talks about her slew of TV appearances, including her lead role in the Witt Thomas Harris sitcom, Nurses and the circumstances under which that part prevented her from being cast in  E.R.Currently, she is stealing every scene as the ruthlessly direct Grandma in Bookie. Arnetia shares what it's like to work with Chuck Lorre and Sebastian Maniscalco. She tells us about her cabaret era and her passion for cooking and she boldly takes on a round of IMDB Roulette that jars some treasured TV memories! Then, Centenarian Erika Kahn recalls her childhood in Nazi Germany, and she contrasts and compares the climate which led to the Nazi atrocities with that of our current perilous pivot point in America. Erika is a tenacious activist whose words of hope and optimism are essential for those of us taking on the rise of American fascism. In recommendations --Fritz: Netflix Series 'American Manhunt: OJ Simpson'Weezy: The Movie 'Studio One Forever' (2023), streaming on several platforms Path Points of Interest:Arnetia WalkerArnetia Walker on IMDBArnetia Walker on WikipediaArnetia Walker on TiktokBookieErika KahnWe Played Marbles: Remembering A Stolen ChildhoodA documentary featuring Erika KahnAmerican Manhunt: O.J. The iconic musical “The Wiz” has returned to Broadway. The Black take on “The Wizard of Oz” debuted in 1974, featuring theater stars such as Stephanie Mills, André De Shields and Dee Dee Bridgewater. It was later adapted as a film starring Diana Ross, Lena Horne and Michael Jackson. After decades of countless local stage productions and bootleg VHS tapes passed around among friends and neighbors, “The Wiz” is a beloved cultural touchstone for many generations of Black people.Host Kai Wright is joined by Jason King, dean of the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, to discuss behind the scenes details of the many iterations of “The Wiz,” and break down how it went from “mid” reviews to a Black cultural artifact. Plus, they take calls from listeners across the country about their connections to the show — including a special one from Schele Williams, director of the revival of “The Wiz” now on Broadway.Companion listening for this episode:Amber Ruffin Talks ‘The Wiz' Revival, Writing for ‘Late Night,' and Representation in Comedy (4/15/2024)The comedian breaks down how her long career writing and performing as a Black woman prepared her for her new venture: bringing the Black cult-classic "The Wiz" back to Broadway.
