The Mt Hutt MTB trails are just out of Methven, which is smack bang in the middle of the South Island. Andy has been involved in the club out there since the early 2000's and is in charge of the trial maintenance. Not only is he a passionate digger but he rips on a bike too and is all about community! In this episode, I talk to Andy about how mountain biking in Methven started and how it has developed as a key asset for the community, a little about bikes and set-up, and our trail dogs. Denny Wilkins' story is that of a geology major from Massachusetts turned into a journalism professor at St. Bonaventure. It's also the story of a professor who taught a generation of St. Boanventure journalism graduates — Brian included — to omit needless words.Denny and Brian, now colleagues at the Jandoli School of Communication, bring faculty meeting energy to this week's episode. Denny discusses the challenges of teaching college students how to write, the importance of curiosity, and how he teaches it. Denny talks about his own journalism experiences, why he views himself as a coach, and what he learned from former St. Bonaventure women's basketball coach (and current coach at Providence) Jim Crowley about teaching. Can you make each sentence one word shorter? If so, you're halfway to a better story.Yep. He also talks about what Brian was like as a student. I immediately regret this decision.Denny WilkinsSt. Bonaventure University Writing Style GuideGarbage Land: On the Secret Trail of Trash by Elizabeth RoyteThe Grid: The Fraying Wires Between Americans and Our Energy Future by Gretchen BakkeConcrete Planet: The Strange and Fascinating Story of the World's Most Common Man-Made Material by Robert CourlandThe Pencil: A History of Design and Circumstance by Hentry PetroskiThe Road Taken: The History and Future of America's Infrastructure by Henry PetroskiRust: The Longest War by Jonathan WaldmanJohn McPhee's booksSubscribe:Apple PodcastsSpotifyOvercastRSS

We sat down with a Secret Trail Fairy to talk about her love for the sport, her passion and inspiration for building trails as well as the challenges and thoughts that go into her work that's hidden away in the forest. Of course, in contrast to former guests Greg Jolliffe or Dominik Bosshard, the Secret Trail Fairy operates in a grey area of the rules and that's why she chose to remain anonymous. This episode was inspired by a similar episode of the excellent Single Trails and Single Malt Podcast and the Secret Trail Fairy approached us to do something similar for Switzerland. Of course, we were happy to oblige and it was interesting to hear her perspective on sustainability, "trail parenting", the frustrations of working with local authorities, as well as some of the trails that get her excited despite her not being involved in the dig. We pick up on diversity in trail building, get an alternative view on recent official trail projects and learn how better coordination between trail users can help in avoiding conflicts out in the forest. If you would like to get in touch with the Secret Trail Fairy, you can reach out to us via the contact form or shoot us a DM on Instagram. We'll make sure that she gets your message. Host Ben Rice travels to Chico, CA, to talk to the town's second-ever brewery, Secret Trail Brewing, and owner/brewer Charlie Barrett, as well as Chico's indie-pop darlings Surrogate (represented by guitarist Michael Lee and keyboardist Daniel Martin). We talk consumption, creativity, and a change to the digital/internet era, as well as pesky ABC regulations, marketing tactics, and how to retain your individuality in a market that has certain expectations. Plus! Expansion! Singles on tape! Knowing you might fail but at least you tried! And the challenges of live performance, especially in Sacramento, CA. But it's not all doom and gloom! We also talk about Surrogate's upcoming appearance at The Maltese's 10th anniversary show (May 30th) and Secret Trail's SpringFest on May 9! Enjoy!
