In this episode of the AACC Podcast, our host, Izzy Koo, chats with Pastor Michael Lee of Encounter Church in Seattle, Washington. During the conversation, Pastor Michael highlights the stereotypes that often limit the perception of Asian leaders. While Asians are seen as responsible and capable, they are rarely viewed as primary leaders. This observation has fueled Michael's passion for creating spaces where Asian voices are not just included but celebrated. His commitment to a multi-ethnic church is a response to the need for diverse leadership that reflects the community's demographics. Send Wilk a text with your feedback! (incoming msgs only - I can't reply) Michael Lee is a professor of communication and the director of the Civility Initiative at the College of Charleston. He came to civility work through competitive debate—and found that debate, at its best, is deeply connective and dialogic. In this conversation, Michael and Wilk explore what's really going on when people avoid disagreement, and why that silence is often more damaging than conflict. They dig into the nervous system roots of fight, flight, freeze, and fawn—and how those responses show up in everyday conversations, especially online. Michael makes a sharp distinction between healthy stress and distress, arguing that real growth requires exposure to discomfort, not protection from it. One of the episode's most powerful ideas: people confuse conversation with complicity. Michael unpacks why that conflation is so common and what tools—perspective-taking, norm-setting, reciprocity—can help us move past it. And he reminds us that the stranger you're afraid to talk to is more likely to become a friend than an adversary. If you've ever felt like civility is code for “stay quiet,” this conversation is for you.Learn more about and connect with Michael Lee by getting the full show notes for this episode at www.DerateTheHate.com. In September 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking cyanide-laced Extra Strength Tylenol capsules, sparking one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history. The victims ranged from a 12-year-old girl to parents and working professionals, all unknowingly poisoned after using a trusted over-the-counter medication. As panic spread, Johnson & Johnson issued a nationwide recall and introduced tamper-proof packaging that permanently changed the pharmaceutical industry. Investigators pursued multiple suspects over the years, but no one has ever been charged with the murders. In this episode, we examine the victims, the investigation, the leading theories, and the lasting impact of the Tylenol murders. We often hear about the Enlightenment. Some ideas were born during this period of time, and others were called into question. Michael Lee's life reads like a Forrest Gump-style when-you-come-to-a-fork-in-the-road-take-it Southern novel. Except that it's all true. Starting out humbly enough as a shoeshine boy in his dad's smalltown Mississippi barber shop--where he was once invited to swim in a king's swimming pool--he later played champion-level college football, looped for years on the Mid-south Wresting circuit, worked his way through local law enforcement ranks and became body guard to none other that The Killer himself, Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis. Along his journey he met folks you wouldn't believe, picking up stories--and insights--that'll make you laugh, raise your eyebrows and shake your head. This epsiode if full of grit, heart and behind the scenes tales and insights from a heckuva life. In those moments, faith can feel hard to hold onto, especially when God seems silent. Psalm 88 gives us a rare look at raw, unresolved doubt, ending not with hope, but with the words, “Darkness is my closest friend.” And yet, God left it in the Bible. Maybe that's because real faith isn't about having it all together—it's about being honest, even when things feel messy.MESSAGE NOTES: https://www.bible.com/events/49481938RESOURCES: https://www.canyonridge.orgBLOG: https://canyonridge.org/blogs/
A meditation by Fr. Eric Nicolai in Lyncroft centre in Toronto, preached on August 2, 2025, on the invitation to contemplation. We start with the scene of the transfiguration on Mount Tabor, where Peter is so captivated that he says: It is good that we are here. (Mark 9, 5)Domine, bonum est nos hic esse. What is the light that we must see to be dazzled in our contemplation of the divine?Music: Original track by Michael Lee of Toronto.Thumbnail: Carl Heinrich Boch - Transfiguration of Jesus, 1872, Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark.
A meditation preached at Kintore College, an Opus Dei student residence in Toronto.Matthew 13:44-46: Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field. ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.'The treasure means abundance of gifts; the pearl indicates the beauty of the Kingdom. The treasure is something stumbled upon; the pearl, the result of a lengthy search; but in both instances the finder is filled with joy.Music: Original track Michael Lee of TorontoThumbnail: The Famous Ardagh Chalice

A meditation by Fr. Eric Nicolai preached at Lyncroft Centre in Toronto, June 7 2025. There is this incredible line in St. Paul in which he speaks of having the same sentiments that Christ Jesus had (cf. Phil 2:5). “Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.”To empty ourselves like Christ, we must step down from our throne of self-importance.Music: Original track by Michael Lee of Toronto.
