Offering a gateway destination for new craft beer drinkers is arguably one of the most important things any beer scene can possess, and thankfully Ontario has Beertown. Jen Tamse jumps back on the pod to catch us up on what's been happening with Beertown in the 18 months since she was last on, their epic 12-location tap takeover with Bellwoods, how she thinks about her collaboration beers, her approach to structuring their beer menu, her trip to Belgium to brew a collab with Brasserie Huyghe (Deliria), the legend of Mikkeller's Beer Geek Breakfast, the sheer value of what Beertown brings to Ontario, she tells the story of becoming a Belgian Beer Knight, and the importance of Untappd. They got into four impeccable beers that had a direct tie-in with Beertown - Bellwoods x Beertown Beer Belly Pale Ale, Short Finger x Beertown French Fuse Saison, Brasserie Huyghe Deliria (2024), and Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast (brewed in Ontario by Craft Brand Co.). This was epic - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Advent 2024 Day 07 brings us winter cheer as always. It's sad that Mikkeller's Baghaven is no more. They did great wild ales. Ensenada Batch 1 is a prime example of that. This Danish wild ale aged in tequila barrels and blended with red grapefruit, sea salt and sabro hops creating an almost gose like experience. You've very lucky if you still have one of these. Might be a good time to open it. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #advent2024 #adventcalendar #wildale
We don't normally go to the same place in the same year, let alone in the same summer. Something special happened and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to review a beer. 3 Fonteinen has decided to finally release their beers on tap. You know we love 3F beers and getting it by the glass is a huge bonus. Mikkeller Moriskan somehow got kegs. Might be the first in Sweden. Certainlly the first in the region. 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriekenlambik is full of sour cherries which gives it a tart cherry juice flavor. It's incredible. If you missed this and love gueuze, they have Oude Lambic 2019 on tap as well. We follow that up with Pomona Island Crimson & Clover 2023. This English barleywine was aged in an apricot brandy barrels. This is incredible and makes you wonder why more beers aren't aged on apricot brandy barrels. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #barleywine #kriek #gueze
Keeping the summer going, we head out to Ramen 2 Birru. Mikkeller's ramen joint makes great ramen. We've been eating here for a few years. There are two locations in Malmö. We are at the Möllanvängstorget location. We didn't try the ramen this time but feasted on beers instead. Apex is an IPA focused Swedish brewery that's been upping the game for a few years. Havoc Apparatus IPA is a 6.5% NEIPA. Sadly they don't mention the hops so mysteries abound. Fuerst Wiacek Yield is a companion beer to the APEX IPA. This IPA comes in at 5.5% ABV and is very easy to drink. We saw another beer on the menu that we couldn't pass up. Brewski Grandmother Gose is a mango, lime and habanero gose. Image a spicy margarita as a beer. It's a spice that builds over time and doesn't completely wreck the palate but comes close. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #neipa #hazyipa #ipa #gose #mikkeller
It's summer and we're on the road. Or at least down the street. We are hitting up several bars and restaruants around Malmö all summer. We kick this off with Mikkeller Moriskan. We reviewed this location a few years ago and it was great. We thought it was time to get out and revisit this summer popup. Is it still a popup bar if it's in the same place very summer for six years? This seasonal bar is a great venue on a warm summer day with lots of beer and food. Verdant They Went on Forever is a NEIPA made with mosaic, nelson sauvin and galaxy hops. Verdant fumbled for a couple of years but it feels like they are getting back on track with a solid NEIPA. Swedish brewery Ten Hands Bring on the Night is a heavy roasted double stout. This is a solid base stout that brings the chocolate, liquorice and coffee notes you would expect from a heavily roasted stout. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #verdant #tenhands #neipa #dipa #imperialstout

The Brewbound team reconvenes after a week of West Coast travels to discuss the latest bev-alc industry news. Zoe reports back on the themes coming out of this year's CiderCon in icy Portland, Oregon, and then she and Jess share takeaways from the Beer Industry Summit in San Diego resort city Coronado. Justin joins the duo to break down the big news of the last week, including a craft-on-craft deal in New England, a private equity firm selling part of its stake in Mikkeller, a CEO change at Sapporo-Stone Brewing, another Heineken exec joining Lagunitas' c-suite and an update on the bidding for Anchor, including a Fritz Maytag sighting. Plus, the team plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on the return of the Coors Light train for the Super Bowl and a comparison of ready-to-drink offerings to craft beer.
Beer Mints and Potato ChipsMiller Lite always has some interesting swag. For Dry January it's mints that are supposed to taste like Miller Lite, which I guess is a good thing. More my taste (maybe?) are potato chips that taste like a citrus IPA. Honestly, that doesn't sound great, but I would try them.AB InBev does ParisAs a beer sponsor backs out in protest of Russian and Belarussian athletes being allowed to participate in the olympics, AB InBev steps in to be the beer sponsor. Good for them, they always do make sound business decisions. Mikkeller goes macro and our favorite gueuze scales backCarlsberg has acquired a minority stake in Mikkeller. They wanted to buy them outright, but Mikkeller wasn't up for that. More sadder for us, Drie Fonteinen announced team changes and the climate of craft beer means they'll be scaling back production. We were really sad when we read that Baghaven would cease prodcution of their terrific wild ales. They were one of the standout labels in the slowly crumbling Mikkeller empire. Fortunately the head brewer at Baghaven has started his own brand and it's off to a blast. Riesling Blomst is a Danish wild ale mashed with Rielsing grapes and then mixed with red and white elderflowers. After that they dry hopped it with French Barbe Rouge hops. The result is pure delicious elderflower like juice. The second beer we tried is Transcending Terroir. Made in collaboration with De Garde Brewing from Oregon, they blend Oregon Wild Ale with Danish Saison and then aged it on oak barrels before mixing in Pinot Noir grapes. If that wasn't enough, they give it another year in oak barrels to let it rest. The end results is a fizzy Pinot Noir that is the perfect summer drink. If this how Insight Cellars is starting, they are off to amazing things. #beer #drinks #craftbeer #wildale #danishwildale

Remember when Mikkeller used to make all sorts of beers and not just lagers and pilsners. What's on Tap Podcast remembers. We brought out two classic beers from the past to try them today. Have they stood the test of time? First is Mikkeller Black 2007, a 17.5% imperial stout that packs quite a punch. Originally it had whisky, vanilla, oak, chocolate and hint of liquorice. After that we try the Mikkeller San Diego Vanilla Shake 2019, a 13.4% abv imperial stout with coffee, vanilla and aged in bourbon barrels. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #mikkeller #imperialstout #stout
Cheers to 7 years: Turning the page to BGR 2.0This episode is the final episode we will record in the Beer Guys Radio studio and the final radio broadcast of the show. We're not going away, BGR 2.0 is around the corner, but it is a bittersweet moment as we say goodbye to the old and get excited for what's next.We reminisce about our favorite moments from the past seven years, including meeting Beer Archaeologist Travis Rupp, talking to Dan Carey, and interviewing Alan Sprints of Hair of the Dog. We also discuss the decline in craft beer sales and ponder the reasons behind this decline. Additionally, we explore the closure of Mikkeller's final US location and Heineken cutting draft sales to five states due to supply chain issues. Join us as we celebrate the end of an era with our last studio session and radio broadcast, featuring a special appearance from our friend Fish Scales of Nappy Roots and Atlantucky Brewing. And remember, we'll be back as a podcast, so be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app!Craft Beer Sales Decline in 2022According to the National Beer Wholesalers Association, craft beer dollar sales were down 4.8% in 2022, with case sales down 8.6%. We ponder the reasons behind this decline, such as changing tastes, health consciousness, and supply chain issues during the pandemic. The craft beer industry is facing several challenges, including increased competition from other beverages like hard seltzers and non-alcoholic beers. However, despite these challenges, the craft beer community remains strong and continues to produce innovative and delicious beers for fans to enjoy.More news in this episode- Mikkeller's Final US Location Closes- Heineken Cuts Draft Sales Due to Supply Chain IssuesCelebrating Craft Beer FriendshipsAs we wrap up this chapter of Beer Guys Radio, we want to take a moment to celebrate the friendships and connections that we have made in the craft beer world. CRAFT BEER PODCAST NEWS EPISODE! While our interview with Mikkel of Mikkeller got delayed, we wanted to talk about the closing of their final location in the US and what this means for non-american beer in the US. Wendy starts off the show however with a National Beer Day quiz with Ken and Dan answer the questions, and Ken finishes the show talking about Bevana, its take on the supply chain, and what beer distributors could do to help properly distribute beer all over the country without some stores like Binny's in Chicago sitting on cases of BCBS variants while stores in Michigan get a few bottles of each. We don't intentially try to review anniversary beer releases. We just end up getting them some how. Arpus is celebrating their 5th anniversary this year. To celebrate this event, they released a triple dry hopped IPA called 5 Year Anniversary Triple Dry Hopped IPA. They released 5 different beers, a quadruple IPA, imperial stout, tipa and smoothy sour. We need to track down the others. Bulgarian brewery Sofia Electric has teamed up with Mikkeller to release a one off version of the Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast called Beer Geek Balkan Breakfast. This imperial dessert stout is brewed with Medenka pastries and vanilla with honey an muskovado sugar added. A medenka pastry is a honey cookie dipped in chocolate. This is a super sweet beer that overwhelms you. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #ipa #dryhopped #imperialstout #stout #pastrystout

Barry and Abigail discuss Songs About Jane by Maroon 5 and sample “leftover” beers from previously reviewed breweries: Eau Melon from Intracoastal Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida; Fall Shakecation from Mastry's Brewing Co. in St. Pete Beach, Florida; and Double Vanilla Scoop Shake from 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach, Florida. Abigail and Barry recognized similarities in the stories told in This Love and Twice as Hard by The Black Crowes. Abigail compared the chorus of The Sun to some of the lyrics in What I Did For Love from the musical A Chorus Line. The imagery in Must Get Out reminded Abigail of Love Comes Tumbling Down by Matt Nathanson. Double Vanilla Scoop Shake was a collaboration with Mikkeller, a brewery based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and featured Mostra Coffee (based in San Diego, California) as an ingredient. This month on the Brews Less Traveled Beer Club Podcast, host Brian Hatheway and co-host Mike explore the craft beer scene of San Diego, California. We continue our travels in this not-so-lesser-known beer city with Mikkeller Brewing, an international brewery. This brewery has announced they are shutting down their San Diego facility at the end of 2022. We are happy to have some of the last San Diego-brewed beers from Mikkeller, their Bah Hum Bock and Henry's Holiday Cheer! In this episode, Brian and Mike become quite the dynamic duo! These two go through the Mikkeller beers of the night, highlighting the famous can art and “Henry” character created by artist Keith Shore. They run a round of not-so-rapid fire questions and dive into Mike's hay days as a YouTube star. Finally, Brian recounts how San Diego helped in the Brave Noise Movement. Information on the Brave Noise Movement and the AntiSexist, AntiRacist, ProEquality Beer Club is also highlighted. You can drink along with us from the comfort of home! We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Flex is back! We're talking about some new breweries, drinking with Instagram friends, trouble for hop growers, and Flex has some awful news to share about what he's been drinking. Flex is sipping on Desert Noise from https://www.eagleparkbrewing.com (Eagle Park Brewing). Greg is drinking Cactus Cat from https://www.ogopogobrewing.com (Ogopogo Brewing). Greg talks about the party Pedals & Pints threw for Emo Night and what a great job Monica and Brit did on their emo collab beer. He also got to hang out with friend-of-the-show Fontana Jim at Naughty Pine. Flex did unofficial research with friends who gave him a Bud Light Next; not most incredible friends. He also tried to get drunk from some 450 North cans, but there wasn't any alcohol; now, he just has fruit flies. Chew Your Beer calls in to give Greg the business about his feelings on Untappd. Mikkeller closes its San Diego taproom and production facility but still won't address the real problem. In October, Maui Brewing and Modern Times will be under the “Craft Ohana” umbrella. Sapporo officially closes on their deal with Stone Brewing; another one bites the dust (this becomes a therapy session). Another San Diego brewery, Green Flash, is hitting the auction block this month. And German hop crops are not doing so well with the drought, it might be time to find some new varietals and we have questions. In this episode, we found ourselves broadening our horizons at Setting Sun Sake in the Miralani Makers' District.
We have two Danish beers this episode. And they aren't from To Ol or Mikkeller. Caleidoskope and Swedish brewers Akia have done a joint collab called Two Great Mondays. Each brewery has done their version of this hazy IPA. We are trying the Caleidoskope version. I wonder if we can find the Akia version. BrygBrygBryg has quitely been cranking out beers in Copenhagen for awhile. We're trying Temple 2022. This farmhouse saison is red wine barrel aged brewed with honey and black currant. The beer is a fantastic experience with loads of yummy saison funk and a hint of blackcurrant and honey.

Snafu Brewing Company is your new favorite dive bar If you love a taplist full of classic beer styles then this episode is not for you. However, if you're intrigued by the R&D department of a brewery including a NutriBullet, beer, fruit, and cereal you're in the right place. Snafu Brewing Company has been called a "dive brewery." Koon that's fair, and accurate. Snafu likes to have with their beers and wants everyone to feel welcome. When a guest asked if they could bring their goat to the taproom he said, "Sure thing." Koon is a career brewer. He says he knew in middle school he wanted to brew for a living and started homebrewing when he was in high school. Before opening Snafu he learned the trade at a few other breweries, including a position as head brewer for Westbrook. Snafu does offer a few more traditional styles - a golden ale, some IPAs and stouts. But if you pass on the fruit and cereal sours you're missing out on the magic. A very scientific test of Bodega Glasses Brian stays hard at work on Twitter wasti... researching the latest in craft beer. His most recent "discovery" is the Bodega Glass. These are new to us but apparently popular in some places, like Mikkeller bars. The Bodega Glass is sort of a short and thicc pint glass. Some people love them but the official review by the team gave them two mehs and one thumbs up. Brian is a fan and says he feels they improve aroma on hoppy beers. But Brian also thinks Cold IPA is a unique beer style. No Mic Nate and I aren't convinced. We both found the glass to be fine, but they didn't really offer any improvement to our overall drinking experience. If you want to check out the Bodega glass for yourself we're told this is the one that Mikkeller uses, or you cant try the ones we have from Crate & Barrel. Featuring a full line up of Mikkeller 2022 Traeblood variants! We discuss how the narcissism of clapping along to live bands had transcended culture, nerfed versions of mosh pits, Anthropos' psychonaut mission prep (set & setting), Thomas Vs. Hobbs, I am therefore, I think.
We went to Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2022. It's a hell of festival. While not as a large as past years, this year felt like a rebuilding after the issues of the past two years. Still, it felt like one of the premiere beer festivals of Europe. Martin and Mathias couldn't join so Stefan is assisted by friend of the pod Chantra. We get into lots of beers and lots of interviews. This is part one of two episodes from MBCC. Interviews include: Peter øl - Oy brewing Charlie wood - Crossover Blendery Bob Slack - Pulpit Rock brewing Hannes Grubber - Nerdbrewing

Brian Lindberg Hansen got to know and love the Belgian beer world as a teenager. Since then, his journey has taken him to all the beer regions of the world. He became a member of the Danish beer consumers' association Danske Ølentusiaster and trained as a beer sommelier. For his employer Meny, he manages an extensive beer store in the middle of a supermarket in Købe. In addition to many hundreds of beers from Denmark, the best beers in the world can also be found here - a truly unique selection. In the podcast, we talk about Brian's personal story, developments in the Danish beer market, and the best festivals that beer lovers should definitely visit.

It's been nearly one year since craft beer began to face its biggest reckoning against sexism, racism, and toxic work culture to date. In that time, there has been some progress, but there has also been a growing polarization between those making calls for change and those making accusations about an out-of-control cancel culture. In the midst of this ongoing controversy and debate, Kate Bailey from Hand & Heart has been working to establish a first-of-its-kind foundation for reconciliation and progress within hospitality. As a consultancy that aims to improve business operations by advocating on behalf of workers, Hand & Heart developed the Mikkeller Reconciliation Program and the BrewDog Affected Workers Registration Platform in order to acknowledge, document, and hopefully reconcile issues to the satisfaction of affected workers and leadership at both businesses. These efforts have come with a significant amount of challenges: emotionally, legally, and financially. Some of those witnessing the challenges have raised some questions. How does this work? Who's paying the bill? Are there any guarantees of a safe and satisfying outcome? I spoke with Kate Bailey and ask some of these questions, although it's important to note that since our first conversation recorded here on March 29, 2022, several new developments have come from both Hand & Heart as well as BrewDog in the ever-changing controversy. In a statement made by Hand & Heart on April 2, Kate does clarify that payments were made by Mikkeller to Hand & Heart for mutually agreed upon services rendered as part of the Reconciliation Program. In a similar statement made in response to BrewDog on April 1, Kate explains that although Hand & Heart's preliminary efforts towards reconciliation do not hinge on any promise of financial compensation, if a business were to opt into an individually tailored program, fees associated with carrying out the services would be agreed upon and expected as with any consultancy agreement. As of today, there are no current negotiations between Hand & Heart and BrewDog. Either way, at no point are victims or accusers expected or required to pay Hand & Heart for their services. In this conversation, you'll hear Kate explain her investigative background and when it dovetailed with beer, how she's able to facilitate between victims and breweries as a third-party, the risks this business model assumes, and her take on what real leadership looks like. We also discuss that despite the impossibility of a one-size-fits-all solution, the effort towards healing is a crucial, yet relatively new model for the craft beer industry. Kate says people don't want revenge—they want accountability. And she wants to help build that, despite the numerous challenges and criticisms that she, and many other activists, face when demanding responsibility from anyone upholding toxic systems. It's a high stakes process—and safety is top of mind for Kate every step of the way. Find out exactly what she does to ensure safety and establish credibility, how she aims to facilitate a two-way dialogue that requires trust on both sides to accomplish a mutually beneficial—if not sometimes uncomfortable—path towards positive change, and why she remains hopeful at the possibility of redemption, even when the evidence gives her no reason to believe. This doesn't end wrapped up neatly with a bow. But what ever does?
In this episode of Friday Night Beers, Tom & Vince try a beer called Salmon Pants. This lager is a collaboration with WarPigs BrewPub, made up of 3 Floyds and Mikkeller. The hosts drink it and somehow compare it to things like spinoffs in Hollywood, the meaning of fan service, Chris Hemsworth, The Beatles, Get Back and more. At the end, they rate this beer on a unique 1-5 scale. VINCE: 4.75 / 5 VincesTOM: 4.75 / 5 TomsInstagram: @friday.night.beersTwitter: @fnb_pod Theme music by Billy Hansa. A small piece of me permanently exists in the city of Fort Collins, Colorado. Ever since my dad emigrated from the UK and took a job here in 2010 I have visited often, and become more enamoured with the place each time I do so. While it was the beer that first made me form an attachment with Fort Collins (and, indeed, start writing about it) over the years it became more to me than simply a place I visited. Trips were about seeing friends, hiking, relaxing by the Poudre River, and, over time, the beer became less central to each visit. At least, that's what I convinced myself. The truth is, as a true beer enthusiast it was always about the beer. And I was reminded about how much this matters to me when New Belgium—headquartered in Fort Collins and once the fourth largest craft brewer in the United States—announced its sale to Australian firm Lion in November 2019. The news of this triggered in me a deeply emotional response. So tied had I become to the story, the people and the product of this place that I could not figure out how to deal with it.I had hoped to reconcile these feelings on a scheduled visit in April 2020, but when the inevitable happened and my flights were cancelled, this thought process had to be temporarily paused. Thankfully I was finally able to make my way back to Colorado in November 2021 (and I reflect on this trip during the episode.) This meant I was finally able to visit the New Belgium Taproom, enjoy a pint, chat to my friends who work there, and try and figure out how I feel about the next stage in this brewery's journey. Those thoughts stowed away, once I returned home I turned on the mic and riffed on those feelings. Is it truly irrational to have a strong emotional response when a brewery you're fond of sells out? In this episode, I make my best attempt to answer that question.I'm also thrilled to welcome on board a brand new sponsor for this episode. Hand and Heart is a business consultancy focussed on supporting industries including hospitality—and that includes breweries and other beer-centric firms. We've partnered with them to offer listeners of The Pellicle Podcast a free 30 minute advice session. You could be a business owner wondering what the hell DEI means, an employee wanting to upskill, thinking about starting a business, or at a loss of how to develop your current business. To sign up head to www.handandheart.eu/pellicleIf the Hand and Heart sound familiar, it's because they recently published the documentary podcast Super Cool Toxic Workplace, investigating the allegations of abuse and toxic workplace culture at the Danish brewery, Mikkeller. We're thrilled to partner with a business that shares the values we have at Pellicle, and thank them for their support in helping our own podcast to flourish.
