An ode to a classic of French New Wave cinema – Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (A Bout de Souffle) – Nouvelle Vague is more than a heady film nerd love fest. It's a Linklater movie, which means it's a hangout film; it's just that the gang we're hanging with happens to be reinventing modern cinema, whether they know it or not. We've got writer, actor, and teacher Tarik R. Davis (The Amber Ruffin Show) with us to talk about the petite charms of this Cannes premiere. "Nouvelle Vague" is a black and white comedy-drama film directed by Richard Linklater starring Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. It follows the shooting of "Breathless," one of the first feature films of the Nouvelle Vague era of French cinema, in 1959. The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its casting, performances, writing, and direction from Linklater, who was working in the French language for the first time in his career. Linklater, Marbeck, Deutch, and Dullin were all kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in limited release and will be available to stream on Netflix on November 14th. Thank you, and enjoy! Zoey Deutch returns to Skip Intro to talk about her latest transformation in Nouvelle Vague as American actress Jean Seberg. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater — and a love letter to the French New Wave classic Breathless — Nouvelle Vague wasn't the first time that Linklater and Deutch shared a film set. Deutch shares how Linklater compares rehearsals to athletics, starting exciting new chapters in her personal life, hilarious irrational fears, and the deep love she has for her sister, Maddie. Video episodes are also available on the Still Watching Netflix YouTube Channel. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.
"The Running Man" is a remake of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1987 dystopian action thriller based on a Stephen King book. Oddly enough, it was set in 2025. This time out, Glen Powell plays a man desperate for money for his family, who agrees to appear in a TV reality game show where he attempts to outrun a team of murderous bounty hunters to win a billion dollars. Director Edgar Wright, who made "Baby Driver" and "Shaun of the Dead," knows his way around action and comedy and delivers on both counts. However, this time he just doesn't know when to quit. He's guilty of overkill. The biggest problem with "The Running Man" is the running time. "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" is the third installment in the comedy heist action series about an ensemble of magicians who pull off bank jobs using their considerable skills at illusion. Jesse Eisneberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher team up once again, this time attempting to steal the world's largest diamond from a villainous crime organization led by Rosamund Pike. It's a reasonably entertaining installment, but the tricks are very familiar. What's missing from "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" is magic. If you haven't seen Jean-Luc Godard's classic 1960 French New Wave film "Breathless," then Richard Linklater's "Nouvelle Vague" probably won't have much meaning for you. This Netflix offering is a painstaking recreation of the making of "Breathless," which popularized a new style of filmmaking and made international stars of Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. Nerd alert!! It's a loving homage to avant garde movie making.

All treats and no tricks for you in this packed Halloween edition of Breakfast All Day. Here's what we've got: NOUVELLE VAGUE: Richard Linklater recreates the making of the French New Wave classic "Breathless" with a movie that looks like it could have come out in 1960, as well. You don't need to know anything about Jean-Luc Godard, or Jean Seberg, or Jean-Paul Belmondo to enjoy this affectionate and humorous homage, but there are Easter eggs galore if you do. In theaters before streaming on Netflix Nov 14. SHELBY OAKS (With William Bibbiani): Our good friend Bibbs joins in on a review of this horror debut from longtime YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann. It follows a woman investigating the disappearance of her sister, who was a paranormal investigator, in a small Ohio town. In theaters. HEDDA: Tessa Thompson is impossibly charismatic in this bold reimagining of the classic Henrik Ibsen play "Hedda Gabler." Nia DaCosta's adaptation is queer and multiracial in ways that are reminiscent of "Bridgerton." The cinematography and production design are gorgeous, but see it for the clothes alone. Streaming on Prime Video. IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT: This will end up being a major contender in the awards conversation. Iranian master Jafar Panahi tells the story of several disparate people who come together to abduct and confront the man they believe was their torturer in prison. It's tense and beautifully acted, with an unexpected streak of absurd humor. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE!: Our travels have kept us from doing our movie news livestream for the past couple weeks, so it was nice to be together again. Among the topics we discussed were the upcoming "Stranger Things" finale, "Sinners" and "K-Pop Demon Hunters" back in theaters, Osgood Perkins Day, and Francis Ford Coppola auctioning off his watch collection. We're gone next week but back Nov. 14. Thanks for being here! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

Jean Seberg was a French New Wave actress and pixie cut icon. She was also an active supporter of the Black Panthers Party. As her career floundered and rumors hurt her reputation with the public, Jean became convinced the FBI was surveilling and sabotaging her because of her political activity. At the time everyone thought she was paranoid, but the truth is much darker. This episode was first published on 06/29/2019. It has been slightly edited from the original version.
This episode was originally released on July 4, 2017. Listen to help prep for the next episode of our new season, The Old Man is Still Alive. Jean Seberg made her first two films, Saint Joan and Bonjour Tristesse, for director Otto Preminger, a tyrannical svengali character whose methods would traumatize Jean for the rest of her life and career. No wonder she rebelled against this bad dad figure by marrying a handsome French opportunist. Meanwhile, Jane Fonda moves to New York, joins the Actors Studio, takes up with her own hyper-controlling male partner, and tries to define herself as something other than Henry Fonda's daughter. Cinema60 is back with a ghost guest in order to highlight some notable opinions on film. Dwight Macdonald, a celebrity film critic of the ‘50s and ‘60s who is now more remembered as a cultural critic and political pundit, had a lot to say about the dumbing down of high art to appeal to middlebrow tastes. Championing films that challenged audiences, he famously took on Alain Resnais' Last Year at Marienbad as one of the most difficult films to ever be embraced by American audiences. While he does not consider the film one of his favorites, he admires its techniques and ambitions. He would use it as a touchstone through his career to describe the type of film that pushes boundaries of what cinema can do and engages on a higher level. In this episode, Bart and Jenna respond to Macdonald, muse on the actual difficulty of such a film and use his word to illustrate their own mission statement. The following film is discussed:•Last Year at Marienbad (1961) L'année dernière à Marienbad Directed by Alain Resnais Starring Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi, Sacha PitoëffText discussed:• On Movies (1969) by Dwight McdonaldOther films mentioned:• Citizen Kane (1941) Directed by Orson Welles Starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore• Children of Paradise (1945) Les enfants du paradis Directed by Marcel Carné Starring Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur• Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) Directed by Alain Resnais Starring Emmanuelle Riva, Eiji Okada, Stella Dassas• Breathless (1960) À bout de souffle Directed by Jean-Luc Godard Starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Jean-Pierre Melville• La Dolce Vita (1960) Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée• Jules & Jim (1962) Directed by François Truffaut Starring Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, Henri Serre

This week, Drusilla is joined by special guest BJ Colangelo (This Ends at Prom) to discuss The Corruption of Chris Miller. From wiki: “The Corruption of Chris Miller (Spanish: La corrupción de Chris Miller) is a 1973 Spanish psychological horror[3] film directed by Juan Antonio Bardem and starring Jean Seberg, Marisol, and Barry Stokes.[4] The film follows a woman and her stepdaughter who come to suspect a handyman they have recently hired is responsible for a rash of violent murders in their small mountain community. Marisol's first film in which she does not perform musical numbers. The only brief exception is a moment in which the three protagonists perform a verse of the song Au clair de la lune on guitar, in which Marisol sings a single verse. The film was Marisol's first film apart from Manuel Goyanes. Anabel Films founder and producer, actor Javier Armet, developed an original idea from Santiago Montcada to produce this high-budget, international film (number 7 in the USA). It was filmed outdoors in Comillas (Cantabria) and Las Fraguas (Cantabria) and indoors at Isasi Isasmendi's Esplugas Films Studios in Esplugas de Llobregat (Barcelona).”But first! A few more Frenchies this week as we hit peak romance for September's theme of EUROPEAN VACATION and when it comes to French New Wave, today's discussion is amongst the most infamous. Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 international hit “BREATHLESS” helped set a standard in style at a time when the filmgoing world was hungry for more international flair. Like a few other movies we cover this month, it represents a distinct point in the global recognition of European film. The chemistry between Jean Seberg & Jean-Paul Belmondo is out of this world. Belmondo's character of Michel sees it too. He calls Seberg's Patricia a martian at one point. A romance so bright that it makes you forget that you're watching a crime movie and that this dude is a car thief who killed a cop. They're not fated to be together but we can still revel in the feelings they have for one another. Living. Dying. They look cool either way. A lot has been said about this iconic film and the ease of Belomndo's performance and the shine of Jean Seberg. With Seberg it's hard not to speak of her tragic life that our tax dollars helped destroy. Look that shit up. Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast!! Moving on to France in the World Cinema series and into the French New Wave as Morgan and Jeannine discuss perhaps the most persistent signifier of that trend in movies with Jean-Luc Godard's BREATHLESS (A bout de Souffle) (1960) starring Jean-Paul Belmondo & Jean Seberg! An experimentally styled, in-your-face, and dynamic yet straightforward crime romance movie, it captures the rebellious, rough nature of this film movement perfectly and remains a film class favourite to this day! Join hosts Jason, Anthony, and Tim as they discuss Robert Rossen's Body and Soul, a 1947 boxing film that critic Thom Andersen categorizes as film gris, or socially conscious crime cinema during the film noir years (1940s through the 1950s). Rossen testified at a HUAC hearing in 1951, pleaded the Fifth Amendment, and was blacklisted. Two years later, he testified again and this time he named 57 names and was given his career back in Hollywood. Rossen went on to direct several more features, including the celebrated pool epic The Hustler (1961) and Lilith (1964), starring Warren Beatty and Jean Seberg. We hope you enjoy!
In 1959, a brash critic-turned-filmmaker named Jean-Luc Godard cast movie star Jean Seberg in his first film, BREATHLESS. You probably know it revolutionized movies, but it also had a big impact on fashion, onscreen and off—by seeming like it wasn't even trying. With the help of historians and critics, host Rico Gagliano decodes Seberg's “French Girl” style…and also gives you a peek into his '70s disco wardrobe. Seriously.Season 5, titled Tailor Made, dives deep into the worlds of film and fashion. Each episode tackles a landmark movie that captured a major fashion look of an era, and then decodes what that look meant—to the culture that spawned it, the people who wore it, and the audiences who watched it on screen.BREATHLESS is now streaming on MUBI in Italy and Turkey.
Although produced in Spain, 1973's The Corruption of Chris Miller, has all the earmarks of a traditional Italian giallo - sexual tension in an isolated country house, bad dubbing and, most importantly, a black clad killer. The film is directed by J.A..Bardem, uncle of Oscar winner Javier Bardem. The lush cinematography is by Juan Gelpi and the grand score is from Waldo de los Rios. Jean Seberg stars as Ruth, living with her estranged stepdaughter Chris in that country home. Into their strained relationship enters Barney, a British drifter played by Barry Stokes who may also be the killer murdering locals for their money. Yout Hot Date hosts discuss the film along with a ton of recently seen. At the movies, there's MEG3HAN, A Man Called Otto, and Bill Nighy in Living. Streaming and video DVD finds include The Pale Blue Eye, RRR, Peacock's Sick, The Menu, and 1959's Complusion. Also hear all about Dan's trip to Colombia and Vicky's cataract surgery!
