What happened to Meghan's celebrity friends?*With Love, Meghan*, reportedly struggled to attract the A-list star power many expected, leading to a somewhat underwhelming reception for the Duchess of Sussex's foray into the world of cookery programming. Despite her well-documented connections to high-profile figures such as Oprah Winfrey and Serena Williams, neither appeared on the show. Instead, the series, filmed at a farmhouse near the Sussexes' Montecito residence, features a lineup consisting largely of close friends and lesser-known personalities, including her longtime make-up artist Daniel Martin and former *Suits* co-star Abigail Spencer. A source speaking to *The Sun* suggested that securing guests had been a challenge. “They struggled to book guests. They had a real hard time, and it shows,” the source claimed. Episode SummaryThis podcast episode performs a sound-media meditation on a live event based on a collection of printed scholarly articles. In May 2023 a triple-issue of English Studies in Canada (ESC) was published on the topic of “New Sonic Approaches in Literary Studies.” Edited by Jason Camlot and Katherine McLeod. The issue, designed to explore how sound, literature, and critical methodologies intersect, included thirteen scholarly articles, and an interdisciplinary forum on the place of listening as a methodology in a wide range of scholarly and artistic fields. As the editors considered what kind of “launch” would be best suited to this issue, they felt it should build on the printed scholarship, but also take it further – respond to it, sound it, and perform it. They asked, “What would this journal issue sound like as a chorus or collage of voices?” They proceeded to organize an event to enact the idea of sounding and performing a scholarly collection as a kind of poetic reading of criticism. Each contributor was invited to select an excerpt to perform, and the performances unfolded in sequence within the 4th Space research showcase venue at Concordia University, and through the virtual participation of some contributors on Zoom. The performance event was also the object of an experiment in the multi-track recording of a spoken word event, with microphones of different kinds situated throughout 4th Space, and even outside the venue itself. The eight tracks of audio resulting from that recording session serve as the raw material, the bed tracks, for a podcast that playfully explores the affordances of sound design for the presentation of scholarly research about literary audio. Some of the simple yet profound possibilities of working in sound to think and argue about sound that are explored here are those of amplitude (playing with the relative loudness of sounds), temporality (the movement and mixing of historically-situated times), speed (the movement of sounds in time), space (the relationship of sounds to the places they happened), noise (the sounds we are supposed not to want to hear), intelligibility (the intention of sounding for meaning), positionality (from where and to whom one is sounding), timbre (the textural quality of sounds and what they do), among many others. The goal of this production has not been to deliver the content of the journal as one might grasp it from the print journal (read the special issue for that!), but to emphasize the possibilities and features of sound, sometimes apposite and sometimes in opposition to the intention and circumstances of the intended message. Archival voices and sounds haunt, taunt and disrupt the planned “Sounding New Sonic Approaches” event. Parallel temporal situations compete with each other. Time is sped and stretched. Speech and vocal timbre are mimicked and mutated by an occasional soundtrack scored for monotonic analogue synths. One mode of meaning is lost, while the potential for new kinds of meaning and feeling-making in sonic scholarly production are amplified for the listener's consideration and pleasure.In-person and online performers: Jason Camlot, Katherine McLeod, Annie Murray, Michael O'Discoll, Mathieu Aubin, Julia Polyck-O'Neill, Jason Wiens, Klara du Plessis, Kandice Sharren, Kelly Baron, Nina Sun Eidsheim, Juliette Bellocq, Kim Fox, Reem Elmaghraby, Daniel Martin, Kristen Smith, Kristin Moriah, Mara Mills, Andy Slater, and Ellen Waterman.Live Recording Event produced by Jason Camlot, Katherine McLeod, James Healey, and Douglas Moffat.Podcast and Sound Design by Jason Camlot.

There is a traditional path for successful makeup artists nowadays: Build up a roster of influential clients, accrue a following on social media, and start a brand of your own. After all, makeup artist-led brands — think: Makeup by Mario, Patrick Ta, Violette Fr and Fara Homidi — have never been hotter. But makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell is taking a different approach. Sewell started her career in tech and would slide into the DMs of influential people, offering free services during her time off from work and posting the results on social media — even when she had 10 followers, she recalled. Her strategy has since paid off. Sewell has now provided glam for celebs and influencers including Kelsea Ballerini, Alix Earle and Kristin Juszczyk. Along the way, Sewell realized she also has a knack for education. So, rather than stamp her name on a product collection, she founded Makeup By Kelli Anne, a members-only app and website featuring long-form beauty tutorial content ranging up from makeup 101s, like "How to line your lips" and "How to cover dark circles," to joint features with big names like Jaclyn Hill, Sir John and Daniel Martin. Now, Sewell herself has 331,000 Instagram followers and 159,000 TikTok followers, and her company's Instagram account has over 73,000 followers. In this episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, Sewell talks about starting scrappy, building a community and giving back to that community.

Relaxer is the project of Daniel Martin-McCormick, fka Ital, member of Black Eyes & Gaze, ex-Mi Ami, Halal & Relaxer, Sleeper Cell, Interplanetary Prophets, and more. Rooted in the US punk/noise underground of the late '90s and early 2000s, Martin-McCormick's music embodies a sensual, visceral edge that reflects and extends that legacy. His hardware live sets, honed over a decade of tours, are exhilarating, white knuckle rides, while his DJ sets fluidly cross genres and eras with a cathartic sense of play. He's been a repeat performer at Berghain (where the Relaxer project made its live debut), De School, Unsound, Nowadays and many others. On albums "Concealer" (Planet Mu), "Coconut Grove" (Avenue 66) and "Hedonic Fatigue" (Climate of Fear), his productions stretch out, weaving strands of wormhole techno, minimal, noise, UK hardcore continuum and fractured ambient into a rippling, mesmeric tapestry. Recent club-focused EPs "Licking" and "Candy" (Lovers Rock Recordings) sharpen the blade, amping up his music's animialstic snarl and erotic undertones. Following his recent composition studies with Morton Subotnick, Relaxer's music has evolved a new modality: alongside his club works there have been concerts of long form durational works featuring spoken word and richly spatialized sound design. His debut performance in this new style was a standout at Sustain-Release Year Seven. These works were released in the Summer of 2022 as "Force Field: A Guide for the Perplexed" on Club Night Club. "In Softening Air," the follow up, is out on Lovers Rock Recordings April 1st. Behind the scenes, Martin-McCormick has been a consistent force shaping the US underground. He is the co-founder of Dripping camping festival and NY-based event series. He was a key member of Sustain-Release from its inception and co-director from 2017-2021, founded the labels Lovers Rock Recordings & Climate of Fear, was one of the first residents at Bossa Nova Civic Club. Daniel is a world-renowned makeup artist and Global Director of Artistry and Education at Tatcha. He is also one of the kindest human beings you will ever meet. He is the definition of multi-cultural, with a French-English-American father and a Vietnamese mother and having grown up in Central America and Seoul. Daniel shares with us the evolution of his career, which is rooted in such respect for those who have helped him on his path. He is an example of finding success without the hyper individualism that America tends to emphasize. In addition to talking, of course, about makeup and skincare, we talk about the reality of this moment of global reckoning — the hard truths we need to face as well as the evolutions that deserve to be recognized and celebrated. This conversation is a much-needed reminder of what matters most in life: knowing who we are, honoring cultures, and thinking beyond ourselves. Please enjoy — the truly lovely Daniel Martin. @danielmartin @leahsoojinkim

Seasonal Knowledge and the Almanac Tradition in the Arab Gulf (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) is the first in English to survey indigenous knowledge of seasonal, astronomical, and agricultural information in Arab Gulf almanacs. It provides an extensive analysis of the traditional information available, based on local almanacs, Arabic texts and poetry by Gulf individuals, ethnographic interviews, and online forums. A major feature of the book is tracing the history of terms and concepts in the local seasonal knowledge of the Gulf, including an important genre about weather stars, stemming back to the ninth century CE. Also covered are pearl diving, fishing, seafaring, and pastoral activities. This book will be of interest to scholars who study the entire Arab region since much of the lore was shared and continues through the present. It will also be of value to scholars who work on the Indian Ocean and Red Sea Trade Network, as well as the history of folk astronomy in the Arab World. Daniel Martin Varisco is an anthropologist and historian, who conducted ethnographic and ecological research in the Yemen Arab Republic in the 1970s and returned numerous times in the 1980s and 1990s as both a consultant in development and a historian. Tamara Fernando co-hosted the episode. She is a Past & Present postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Historical Research, London, and an incoming assistant professor in the history of the global south at SUNY Stony Brook University. Her present book project, Of Mollusks and Men, is a history of pearl diving across the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Mergui archipelago. She is interested in histories of science, environment, and labor across the Indian Ocean. Ahmed Yaqoub AlMaazmi is a Ph.D. candidate at Princeton University, Near Eastern Studies Department. His research focuses on the intersection of law, the occult sciences, and the environment across the western Indian Ocean. Welcome to the first edition of a special series of Lloyd's List Podcasts examining how the war in Ukraine has had a lasting impact on different aspects of the shipping industry. In this first edition, we examine the rise of the dark fleet and look at why Russia's increasingly sophisticated sanctions evasion tactics present a lasting risk for the wider shipping industry. To listen to the full series go to: http://bit.ly/3KbnQpS The shipping industry has had to adapt rapidly since Vladimir Putin ordered his tanks across the Ukrainian frontier a year ago. Entire trade lanes have been re-routed, the most extensive set of sanctions in living memory has been hastily constructed and a super-charged ‘dark fleet' of opaque operations has sprung up, forcing shipping to navigate an increasingly complex risk and compliance landscape. In this special podcast series, Lloyd's List's editorial team are joined by a cast of industry experts as they examine the lasting implications of the war in Ukraine for shipping. Today's opening edition looks at the rise of the so-called ‘dark fleet' as one of the major side-effects of the war in Ukraine and concludes that Russia's sanctions-dodging is only getting more advanced. Lloyd's list Intelligence has been tracking the development of the dark fleet from the start and according to our latest analysis the size of the dark fleet has more than doubled in the past two years to now cover about 10% of global tankers trading internationally. In addition to safety implications of effectively removing such a large fleet from mainstream scrutiny in terms of class, insurance and reputable flag state oversight, there are longer term issues for shipping in terms of the complexity of the risk and compliance landscape that is rapidly evolving in the way of this rising subterfuge fleet. Featuring in today's edition: • Michelle Wiese Bockmann, Lloyd's List's markets editor and analyst walks us through the growing role that the so-called ‘dark fleet' is playing in shipping and why Russia's invasion of Ukraine has supercharged deceptive shipping practices. • Daniel Martin, a partner at the law firm HFW, offers his expert analysis of the evolving complexities related to sanctions risk that has sprung up in the wake of the war.

A new research paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 13 on September 14, 2022, entitled, “Site of analysis matters – Ongoing complete response to Nivolumab in a patient with HIV/HPV related metastatic anal cancer and MLH1 mutation.” Anal cancer is a rare disease with increasing incidence. In patients with locally recurrent or metastatic disease, which cannot be treated with chemoradiotherapy or salvage surgery, systemic first-line chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel is standard of care. For patients who progress after first-line therapy and are still eligible for second-line therapy, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibodies are potential therapeutic options. However, prediction of response to immunotherapy is still challenging, including in patients with anal cancer. “Altogether, there is little data on PD-1 treatment in HIV infected patients.” In a new study, researchers Melanie Demes, Ursula Pession, Jan Jeroch, Falko Schulze, Katrin Eichler, Daniel Martin, Peter Wild, and Oliver Waidmann from Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt and Centrum für Hämatologie und Onkologie reported a case of an HIV infected patient with anal cancer, microsatellite instability (MSI) high status, a high mutation frequency regarding tumor mutational burden (TMB) and an ongoing response to Nivolumab. “We report here to our knowledge the first anal cancer case with microsatellite instability (MSI) due to MLH1 mutation and a deep and ongoing response to Nivolumab treatment.” Thorough analysis of the primary tumor as well as metastatic sites by next generation sequencing (NGS) revealed that MSI was formally only found in the metastatic sites but not in the primary tumor. Concomitantly, tumor mutational burden (TMB) was higher in the metastatic site than in the primary tumor. The researchers concluded that all anal cancer patients should be tested for MSI and whenever possible molecular analysis should be performed rather from metastatic sites than from the primary tumor. “According to our results, we propose to assess mutational status in tissue from metastasis rather than from the primary site when additional molecular analyses are performed for treatment decisions.” DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28274 Correspondence to: Oliver Waidmann – Emails: oliver.waidmann@kgu.de Keywords: anal cancer, microsatellite instability, immunotherapy, high-throughput nucleotide sequencing, nivolumab About Oncotarget Oncotarget is a primarily oncology-focused, peer-reviewed, open access journal.
