Luke Koppa, Kristin Sinnott, and Jonathan Ellsworth discuss what they've been getting up to lately, and the gear they've been using to do so. Luke recaps his first trip to Palisades Tahoe, being there during Level 1's mind-blowing SuperUnknown event, finally experiencing the iconic Wildflour Bakery, and some of the skis that stood out throughout the week. Kristin covers her recent trip down to the tropics, and Jonathan goes over some of the touring skis, boots, and bindings he's been liking. We also dive into ski socks, the particular socks each of us used most this season, some new midlayers we've all been testing, and more.RELATED LINKS:Get Yourself Covered: BLISTER+TOPICS & TIMES:Luke's Trip Report (3:57)Kristin's Trip Report (11:22)Jonathan's Trip Report (12:58)Volkl Revolt 101 vs. Fischer Ranger 102 FR (14:52)Salomon QST Echo 106 (18:11)Salomon MTN 96 & MTN Pure Binding (23:01)ON3P Jeffrey & Mango Skis (28:49)Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD 130 BOA (33:09)Our Favorite Ski Socks This Year (36:19)Patagonia Nano-Air Ultralight & Freeride (47:28)Kristin's Promise to Jonathan (1:04:36)CHECK OUT OUR OTHER PODCASTS:Blister CinematicCRAFTEDBikes & Big IdeasBlister Podcast Hosted on Acast. We're an independent podcast and rely on listener support. Thanks! Marco te Brömmelstroet, also known as "The Fietsprofessor," returns to The War on Cars to discuss a new study he co-authored with Dr. Ian Walker, another former guest of the podcast. The study takes a look at a phenomenon where people accept the harms and risks associated with cars in ways they wouldn't in other areas of life. But unlike Dr. Walker's previoius study — and that of Dr. Tara Goddard, another friend of The War on Cars — this new study asks where motonormativity comes from and examines the ways in which it manifests itself differently depending on factors such as where a person lives or their perceptions of the beliefs of their friends and family. The results are fascinating. Marco also studies language and how it affects people's perceptions of mobility and had a lot to say about how we can tell better stories about who and what our streets are for. ***Our new book, Life After Cars: Freeing Ourselves from the Tyranny of the Automobile, will be published on October 21, 2025 by Thesis, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
Alright, strap in Gnards, ‘cause you're tuning into another idiotic episode of the Gnar Couch Podshow. Today, we're talking to “NRML MTB'er” — who, spoiler alert, is anything but normal. We've got Boston Rob, JP/Uncle Touche, Sebastian the wildcard guest, Chief, and Jimmy Sniper gearing up to take you on a deranged journey through mountain biking's less-traveled trails. After Rob morphs into his alter ego, DJ Fred when he plays our newest trap intro song—Canyon Kings—we talk collaborations with OnlyFans creators and reporter nerds going OTB on urban Frisco trails. NRML tells us about blasting bikes with every gun imaginable and we engage in some intense debates over which country deserves a mock nuclear winter. It's all the usual dumb humor with a side of stupid. Pack your sense of humor. Or don't, and cancel all of us. Whatever. We'll come back like cockroaches. Check out our store for sick shirts. In this episode Olly sits down with John Fernandes, co-founder of Freeride Madeira. John takes us through the wild journey of turning a passion for trail building into a global MTB hotspot, hosting the Enduro World Series, Trans Madeira, and welcoming some of the biggest names in the sport. The lads discuss how Jacob Gibbins' iconic photos and Brendan Fairclough's first visit helped put Madeira on the map, the behind-the-scenes madness of shooting DEATHGRIP, and what it really takes to maintain over 200km of hand-built trails across the island. John also shares what it was like hosting the EWS, the brutal reality of trail building, why other companies aren't pulling their weight when it comes to maintaining the trail network, how Brandon Semenuk managed to end John's relationship! Finally John talks about what's next for Freeride Madeira, including new eMTB trails, jump lines, and the epic expansion of Trans Madeira to a whole new island. If you've ever dreamed of riding in Madeira, this one's packed with history, insight, and plenty to get you stoked on booking a holiday! Blaming the media is a common tactic when you feel your competition is getting better coverage than you are. Is that why some Conservatives are saying Mark Carney is getting a free pass from the media in his campaign for the Liberal leadership?
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Beyond the Mountains podcast! Today, I'm joined by an incredible guest—Giulia Monego. Instagram profile : @giuliamonego She's a big mountain athlete with a passion for skiing steep terrain, but that's just the beginning of her story.Giulia grew up in Venice, Italy—a city surrounded by water and canals, far from the mountains—but thanks to her ski-loving parents, she spent winters in Cortina, where she fell in love with speed, competition, and the thrill of the slopes. She started as an alpine ski racer, became a ski instructor, and then pushed herself even further into the world of big mountain free-ride competitions. But for Giulia, growth has always come from stepping outside the box.Her hunger for new challenges led her to become one of the few fully qualified female mountain guides based in Chamonix France — breaking barriers and deepening her connection to the mountains in the process. And in yet another out-of-the-box move, she's now training as an osteopath, combining her love of movement with a desire to help others stay strong, mobile, and pain-free in the mountains she calls home. This conversation goes deep—we talk about the psychology of pushing limits, decision-making in high-risk environments, the impact of mentors, climate change and even the role of mountains as therapy in an increasingly chaotic world. We also dive into the power of stepping outside our comfort zones—because, as Giulia sees it, true growth happens when we challenge ourselves. So, whether you're a skier, an adventurer, or just someone looking for inspiration, this episode has something for you. As a bonus episode, Giulia agreed to take the Beyond the Mountains questionnaire to reveal her true mountain character. So you can find the bonus episode after this inspiring conversation. This is where we play around and have a bit of fun.Hello friends, I am your host Ashley Pettit welcome to season 4, episode 1 of the Beyond the Mountains podcast. Where I talk to people who live, work and play in the mountains.Let's start the intro music and get on with the show. Allons-yNo, hang on a minute, Giulia is Italian, so instead of saying Allons-y which is French for let's go, I need to say Andiamo. So let's start the intro music, and get on with the show. Any guitarist who's been around long enough has dealt with their share of imitators. It's inevitable that someone will borrow their style, and while it can be frustrating, the true mark of a great guitarist is staying ahead of those who try to follow in their footsteps. Although no one could quite replicate Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking style, he once called out a session guitar legend as one of the biggest copycats he'd ever encountered. It's hard for any guitarist not to be influenced by Eddie. While tapping had been around in some form before him, Eddie perfected it, using it to craft entire musical passages. There were glimpses of it on Steely Dan records, but when Van Halen dropped ‘Eruption,' it was like watching someone reinvent the guitar in just two minutes. Suddenly, the same old blues licks weren't going to cut it anymore—Eddie had raised the bar for everyone. The session scene, though, had already started exploring different musical directions. Steely Dan, for example, had top-tier jazz and fusion musicians, but Rick Derringer was making waves on the rock side. While he was known for his hit ‘Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,' Derringer was also celebrated for his standout work with Edgar Winter, particularly the iconic lick in ‘Free Ride.' Despite his own skills, Derringer couldn't resist drawing from Eddie after seeing Van Halen on tour. But instead of just being inspired, he started outright copying Eddie's moves. According to Eddie, Derringer would go onstage and replicate his solos note for note, saying, “Rick Derringer opened for us last year, and he did my exact solo. The next night, he does my solo again and ends the set with ‘You Really Got Me,' just like we do. So I told him, ‘If you keep that up, you're not opening for us anymore.' And I kicked him off the tour.” Even Eddie knew the game. When Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi noted that the band had borrowed some of Sabbath's licks, making their music sound even darker and heavier. Derringer copying Eddie's style was a sign of the changing times. Guitarists who clung to traditional blues riffs were being left behind, while Eddie Van Halen had set a new standard, pushing the guitar to uncharted territories. If players didn't adapt, they risked fading into obscurity. “Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen.
