This year at ROBOTICON, everywhere you look there are space ships and rover landings. This is because all the FIRST programs have a space exploration theme. The team is joined by special guest Kurt Leucht a software engineer at NASA, who is here to show support. Kurt has been working for NASA for 27 years, he is part of Swamp Works a research group that works to create out of the box technology that astronauts will need in the future when they explore Mars. He talks about how there needs to be new technology developed to help the journey to Mars be as safe and cost-effective as possible. Part of Kurt's job is to find a way to use the environment on Mars to make water, rocket fuel and other necessities for the astronauts. Kurt is also at ROBOTICON to give presentations about the process of long-distance space travel and he says it opens people's eyes and gets them excited about what NASA is doing and what to work towards for the future. Kurt explains that the current plan is to go back to the moon. To learn more about long term space travel, they are going to build a small space station around the moon called "the gateway," from there they will make a small lunar colony on the surface of the moon to practice long duration living in space.The special thing about FIRST students Kurt talks about is that these children will be the ones to be living on Mars. He enjoys talking to kids and telling them that because they are growing up in a culture that promotes creative problem solving they are already started to become NASA engineers. 欢迎收听丽莎老师讲机器人,想要孩子参加机器人竞赛、创意编程、创客竞赛的辅导,找丽莎老师!欢迎添加微信号:153 5359 2068,或搜索微信公众号:我最爱机器人。丽莎老师讲机器人之NASA将利用机器人在火星上制造火箭燃料。在火星表面生活工作18个月之后,一个6人勘探小组登上了外太空运载火箭,飞向地球。没有任何人留下,但工作还在继续:自主式机器人继续运行管理采掘和化学合成工厂。在这首次载人火星任务之前数年,这些机器人已经将该工厂建设完成。这一工厂利用火星资源制造水、氧气和火箭燃料,将有条不紊地为两年后的下次火星任务制造所有的必需品。这一机器人工厂并非科幻作品:NASA多个团队正在进行协同开发。位于佛罗里达州NASA肯尼迪航天中心的Swamp Works 实验室便是其中一支团队,按照官方说法,这一工厂是一个“就地资源利用”(ISRU)系统,但我们更喜欢叫它“尘埃推力”工厂,因为它可以将普普通通的尘土转化为火箭燃料。未来,这项技术将实现人类在火星上生活和工作——然后回到地球讲述这段故事。为什么不从地球运送,而要在火星上合成材料呢?NASA解释为“齿数比问题”。经估算,按照如今的火箭水平,要从地球向火星运送1千克的燃料,运输过程需要燃烧225千克的燃料——先发射进入低地轨道,然后向火星发射,减速进入火星轨道,最后减速,在火星表面安全着陆。从起初的226千克到最后的1千克,齿数比为226:1。而且,无论运送的是什么,这一比例都保持不变。我们需要消耗225吨燃料来运送1吨水、1吨氧气或1吨机械装置。避开这种严酷算式的唯一方式,就是就地制造水、氧气和燃料。NASA各研究和设计团队已经分别针对这个问题的不同方面展开研究。最近,Swamp Works团队已经开始整合众多的独立功能模块,展示一个完整的闭环系统。虽然还只是一个模型,但它展示了实现“尘埃推力”工厂所需的所有环节。NASA的长期计划是登陆火星,而目前其将关注点集中在月球,作为一个过渡环节。大部分设备会首先在月球表面进行测试和精调,以求降低直接送往火星的风险。星球天体表面的泥土或尘土通常被称为表土或风化层。风化层大多是火山岩受挤压或风化后产生的精细粉末。火星呈现的红色调是表面的氧化铁矿层,其下是厚厚的一层硅酸盐,可称为长石、辉石、橄榄石等等,由附着在铁、铝、镁等金属上的硅和氧构造形成。火星上各处硅酸盐的含量和密度各不相同,所以这种材料很难挖掘。不仅如此,火星上重力很低,无法用重量抵消铲子插入地面时产生的作用力,挖掘工作也因此更加艰难。地球上一般会用大型车辆挖掘泥土,用大车身的重量抵抗小挖斗的作用力。不要忘记齿数比问题:运往火星的每盎司物品都非常珍贵且价格高昂。所以,必须设法用轻型设备在火星表面进行挖掘。自主式采矿车(RASSOR),或称“风化层高级地面系统操作机器人”就是一种专用于低重力表土挖掘的自动挖掘设备。在设计RASSOR时,NASA工程师重点关注作动系统。机器人的致动器包括电机、变速箱和其他装置,这些装置最后会变成系统重量的主要部分。设计采用了无骨架电机、电磁制动器和3D打印钛外壳等等,力求将质量和体积降到最低。努力没有白费:设计的致动器重量仅是当前市场上相同参数致动器重量的一半。RASSOR使用两个相对的滚筒进行挖掘,每个滚筒都配有多个齿形边缘的小型挖掘铲。当滚筒转动、控制臂下压滚筒使得RASSOR慢慢前行时,滚筒挖掘铲仅铲收集少量的表土。这就挖出一道浅沟,而不是一个深洞。滚动挖掘的滚筒内部是空的,可以收集、存放挖掘到的表土。RASSOR的另一个主要特点是,在挖掘的时候,两个滚筒转动的方向相反。这样,挖掘力被大幅削弱,RASSOR可在低重力的条件下工作。RASSOR装满滚筒之后,会收起提升臂,驶向处理装置。卸货时,机器人仅需反方向转动滚筒,表土便从进入时通过的小铲中倒出来。接下来的工作由另一个设备——机器人提升臂来完成。它将表土吊起来,送到工厂的平台上,然后输送至烘箱内,烘箱会自动封闭,并开始加热。干瓦斯鼓风机会将表土所含的所有水分子吹出来,然后用冷凝管(指形冷冻器)收集起来。你可能会问:“火星表土不是极其干燥的吗?”答案是……情况非常复杂。主要看在哪里挖掘,挖多深。火星上的某些地方,几乎就在地表几英尺之下,便有多层近乎固态的水冰。低纬度地区有含水量约为8%(质量)的石膏沙丘。提取水分之后的表土被倒在地上,RASSOR机器人将它铲起来运走。如果采用NASA正在研发的3D打印方法,这些“废”料可用于建造防护设施,甚至修建道路和起降场。然后,从表土提取出的水都要经过净化。净化模块采用多级过滤系统和去离子床。水不仅可供饮用,还是制作火箭燃料的重要原料。水分子在电解槽中分解为氢气分子和氧气分子,然后分别对这两种气体进行压缩、液化,便可以合成液态燃料火箭发动机中常用的燃料和氧化剂。问题在于,液态氢必须在温度极低的条件下储存。所以NASA计划将氢气转化成一种相对极易储存的燃料:甲烷。氢与碳结合便可以得到甲烷。但火星上哪儿有碳呢?幸运的是,火星上有很多碳。火星大气层中二氧化碳气体分子的含量为96%。捕获这种二氧化碳的工作由二氧化碳冷冻器完成,它的主要功能是利用稀薄的空气制造干冰。从电解槽中收集氧气、从大气中收集二氧化碳之后,便可通过叫做Sabatier反应的化学过程将二者合成甲烷气体。NASA正在设计一款特殊反应器,可创造和维持这种反应所需的压力和温度,将氧气和二氧化碳转化成甲烷气体,同时生成副产品水。在工厂中,下一步要用到的设备是一个自动式连通臂,用于将液体运往外部槽车。这一系统的特殊之处在于,连通装置专门设计成隔尘的。表土微粒非常小,到处都是。而且表土的成分为破碎的火山岩,很粗糙,对设备损害很大。(NASA的登月任务表明,表土引发了很多问题,比如仪表读数错误、机械堵塞、密封失效和温度控制失灵。)所以,要防止表土进入连通装置、电器和液体连接头及所有其他的敏感电子器件,这一点非常关键。连通管的两端各有一组门,作用类似于气闸,用于隔尘。完成一次连接需要3个步骤:第一步,同时将两端的门挤压关闭,特制的密封圈在连通管的两组门周围形成完全防尘密封。第二步,在防尘密封内打开连通管的门,露出安装在移动托板上的真正的连接器。最后一步,将两个托板移到一起,对所有电源、电气和液体连接器进行物理连接。火箭燃料工厂上的机械臂将提起连通管,降低至移动槽车的高度,连接槽车并卸载所有最终产品。这么看,火星地表处理系统与地球上的加油站非常相似,只不过,它分发的不是汽油,而是水。或是液态氧气。或是液态甲烷。或三者都有!最近在佛罗里达州的Swamp Works实验室演示了这一ISRU工厂。为降低成本和减少复杂性,目前我们用了模拟的烘箱和电解槽。用水模拟了3种不同的最终产品。但其他部分都采用了可操作的硬件和软件原型。将各子系统集成之后,发现了一些问题和故障,也取得了一些经验和教训,如果等到开发和测试过程结束再进行系统集成,这些或许要很久之后才能得到。这是Swamp Works团队的一个原则:迅速设计原型、尽早集成系统、尽快验证理念、尽早矫正故障。火星火箭燃料工厂的理念是,将工厂打包装入精巧的小盒子里运往火星,在人类探索者到达之前,工厂已在火星地表部署和开工。在人类火星登陆任务起航前,工厂要自主完成生产和存储返程所需的燃料。NASA的一些团队还在研究在火星任务途中及登陆火星之后种植各种植物,包括土豆。那么,现在和未来之间,还差多少工作呢?很多很多。对于在火星表面运行的单个着陆器和独立探测器,NASA已经有多年经验。近期的探测器——2012年登陆的“好奇者号”,以及将于2020年登陆的探测器“火星2020”——都具有一定程度的自主性。但火星火箭燃料工厂所需要的复杂度、长运行时间以及系统所需的自主水平,都需要时间才能提升到一个全新的水准。同时,需要克服许多的技术难题,才能成功完成这样的任务。其中一个严峻的问题是,目前在火星地表进行处理的各子系统是否能够扩大规模,满足火星载人任务的各种必需品的产量要求。NASA最近估测,此类系统需要在16个月的时间里生产约7吨的液态甲烷和约22吨的液氧。还有,必须确定在哪里着陆和采掘才能达到最大产出,需要多少RASSOR挖掘机,它们每天需要工作多少个小时。还必须算出二氧化碳冷冻器和Sabatier反应器的尺寸以及所需的动力。而且,需要预先识别出潜在的单点故障问题,因为这可能中断地表处理任务,延误后序的载人任务计划;还必须估算每种故障发生的概率,据此增加恰当数量的系统备份和冗余。为了确保机器人技术可以支撑这项任务在没有维护和维修的条件下连续运行数年,设计过程中必须采用极其严格的技术参数。所有的活动部件都必须隔绝或防止破坏性的细小风化层尘土微粒产生的危害。除非有创造性的解决办法,否则,无论是加强密封技术还是强化活动部件的尘土耐受性,都会增加系统的复杂性和重量。此外,只有在了解火星地表下的风化层和冰混合物的紧实度和密度之后,才能设计出合适的挖掘工具。针对与冰块混合压在一起的风化层,当前RASSOR挖掘机器人的齿铲效果最好。但是这一设计不能有效地打碎大片坚硬的固体冰。要设计最合适、最高效的挖掘设备,必须有确定的证据,证明火星地表之下冰和风化层的成分。否则,就必须为应对多种土壤密度和冰密度,设计更加复杂、强力的工具。还必须解决长期储存超冷液体的问题。压力容器与隔热技术和材料进展不断,但当前的技术能在火星地表长期运转吗?未来几年,NASA将会研究所有这些问题。也会不断提高各原型部件的性能和准备就绪水平。会让RASSOR更强健、更轻便,并在与火星类似的环境下进行测试。将继续试验和集成烘箱和电解槽,尝试扩大二氧化碳冷冻器和Sabatier反应器的规模,论证它们能否满足火星载人任务的需要。所有相关工作将继续推进,终有一天,“尘埃推力”这一原型将成为在火星全面运行的系统。

Today’s guest today is Rob Mueller, one of NASA’s senior technologists who is leading an effort to establish a base station on the Moon, and eventually Mars, as well as other destinations in the solar system. Rob is the senior technologist for the Advanced Projects Development at NASA Kennedy Space Center and a co-founder of Swamp Works, an innovation lab that has brought together NASA engineers, researchers and scientists to work on creating Spaceports across the solar system. As most of our listeners know, NASA has been working toward an eventual mission to Mars. But before venturing to Mars, NASA first plans to build a lunar base on the Moon. In announcing the agency’s decision to return to the Moon, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said that this time the agency isn’t interested in just leaving flags and footprints on the lunar surface. “This time when we go, we’re going to go to stay,” he said. As part of this mission, Rob’s work is particularly focused on ways to excavate and mine the resources of space so that astronauts and eventually others will be able to live off the land in space. In today’s interview, Rob talks about his nearly 30-year career with NASA as well as the future of space exploration.
