Guest: John Metzger (LinkedIn), Founder of Asset Assurance Monitoring (Website)."I don't know how, but I recognized it was one of my children. My friend rescued Nicolas, and I thought: Oh my God, at least I managed to catch one."These were the words of a father fleeing the 2015 Bento Rodrigues (Mariana) dam disaster in Brazil (O Globo, 08/11/2015). Five days later, his daughter Emanuele was found dead. The collapse killed 19 people and sent a torrent of toxic mine waste 670km down the Doce River to the Atlantic Ocean. It was Brazil's worst environmental disaster.Four years later, just 70km west, it happened again. The 2019 Brumadinho dam collapse killed 272 people—including an entire family of five and an unborn child—becoming Brazil's worst industrial disaster. Both mines were owned by corporate giant Vale. When raw ore is extracted, the toxic, liquid byproduct is stored behind massive earthen structures called tailings dams. Globally, there are an estimated 29,000 to 35,000 active, inactive, or abandoned tailings storage facilities (TSFs) holding 223 billion tonnes of waste (World Mine Tailings Failures). Active sites account for 85% of all failures. The risk is ongoing: as of late 2025, Brazil alone has 916 dams, with 74 at high risk of collapse and 91 on alert, concentrated heavily in the mining hub of Minas Gerais. When these structures are poorly designed or neglected, they fail. When they fail, the wall of mud obliterates everything in its path. Our guest today, John Metzger, is an expert on the advanced monitoring systems designed to prevent these catastrophes. Having led an incredible, multi-country career, John joins us to explain how real-time data, geotechnical instrumentation, and rigorous telemetry save lives. There were fatal systemic flaws of recent disasters—including why Brumadinho's emergency warning alarms failed to sound, echoing previous conversations on the show with Floodmapp's Juliette Murphy on the desperate need for strict flood-alarm regulations (YouTube Link). Also corporate failures: reports that Vale knew of automated sensor malfunctions two days before the Brumadinho collapse (Mining.com Report) and allegations that safety inspectors felt corporate pressure to sign off on unstable structures.Despite these failures, there are rays of hope. First, the recent establishment of the UN-backed Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI), a new international watchdog tasked with ending corporate negligence in tailings management. Second, I want to honor the legacy of Lindsay Newland Bowker, the actuary behind the vital World Mine Tailings Failures database, who passed away in May 2026. To ensure her work is not lost to time, I have an upcoming conversation with Ankur Shah of PlanetSapling to discuss the future of open-source risk mapping.

Guests: Jalen Thomas and Chris MetzgerHost:  Christopher KardambikisRecorded on February 27, 2026This is the third of three episodes focusing on the recent publication: Even the Score, guest edited by Lindsay Buchman and published by Homie House Press.Jalen Thomas is an interdisciplinary artist from Prince George's County, MD. Her work combines photography, quilting, and design to examine Black girlhood and Black feminine domestic identity.  Operating in the intersections between creative play and domestic labor, Thomas' work is inspired by her mother often creating in collaboration with and for her. Working primarily with textiles and archival family photos Thomas participates in liberatory Black homemaking practices and oral storytelling traditions that have been passed down through generations of Black mothers, sisters, and friends. Currently serving as an Americorp Artist in Residence at 901 Arts in Baltimore, MD, Thomas continues to pass along these traditions to youth by teaching with a commitment to care, joy, and radical imaginative creation. She holds a BS in Graphic design from Stevenson University and an MFA in Community Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art.Christopher Metzger is a socially engaged artist/educator living and working in Baltimore, MD. As Professor and Department Chair of Art and Graphic Design at Stevenson University, his creative practice often engages communities in collaborative-based projects that encourage an exploration of self within larger social frameworks. Centered on fostering community and the investigation of representational justice through a historical and contemporary lens, his work often critiques and challenges the status quo while developing critical perspectives and an urgency to bring about social change through acts of creative resistance.Working primarily within photographic media and design, Metzger's personal work is deeply rooted in, and informed by, his relationship to his wife and kids, a Black woman and two biracial sons. Often dealing with themes related to race, class, and identity, they examine their lived experiences through their individual identities and memories, while navigating places and spaces collectively as a family in search of joy, love, and truth. As an artist/educator, Metzger has come to embrace the symbiotic nature of his creative practice. His art is his teaching, and his teaching is his art. For Metzger, these identities are one in the same. Guided by community, agency, justice, and care and informed by his research into decolonizing art and design education, Metzger's work is committed to the process of un/learning and interrogating the narratives, structures, and systems that have historically been put in place to divide and exclude.Episode artwork by Homie House Press“Paper Cuts Theme” by The Early@theearly_band // http://theearly.net

All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond

Welcome to The Wise & Courageous Podcast, where we host conversations with women leaders about how they are seeking and engaging wisdom and courage in their leadership and work in this unique season. “Somebody came to me and said, ‘You are not supposed to sit at the table. You work for the government; you are supposed to let the guests sit at the table.' And I reflected on it and I thought-absolutely not! You recruited me into government because I have a degree in medicine, because I have a Public Health and Policy degree. Why should I be sitting back and not contribute at the table? I think that was instrumental to my leadership style.” — Quyen Ngo Metzger Quyen Ngo Metzger joins Nancy Pedulla on The Wise and Courageous Podcast for a conversation about leadership. How do your values help you to locate your own North Star for your engagement in your work? Why is a good mentor, one who gives you opportunities to do what you haven't done before, so critical? Quyen shares her wisdom on leading by inspiring others and developing them so that they focus on their strengths. She shares how she has learned to function authentically amid challenges. Quyen is a professor in the Health Systems Science Department and Interim Dean of Faculty Affairs at the Kaiser Permenente School of Medicine. The focus of her work is exploring population health, prevention and care, health disparities and evidence based medicine. Before working for Kaiser, Quyen Served the US Government, reviewing research and providing guidelines on clinical effectiveness. For the purposes of this podcast, we are defining leadership as the stewardship of people, culture and purpose, guiding and serving others toward a shared vision or outcomes. Radley Metzger pushes the boundaries of erotic cinema with The Image (1975), a film that treats desire as ritual, performance, and provocation. Adapted from the infamous novel by Catherine Robbe-Grillet—writing under the name Jean de Berg—the film unfolds as a stylized confession. Carl Parker plays Jean, the author surrogate recounting a charged encounter with his estranged friend Claire (Marilyn Roberts) and the young woman who becomes the focus of his controlled cruelties, Anne (Mary Mendum).Joining Mike are Jessica Shires and Heather Drain, as the conversation situates The Image alongside Metzger's other works and within a broader lineage of European erotic literature and BDSM aesthetics. The episode interrogates authorship, consent, power, and the uneasy space between fantasy and autobiography that defines Robbe-Grillet's writing and Metzger's adaptation.Interviews with Rob King, author of Man of Taste: The Erotic Cinema of Radley Metzger, and filmmaker Lina Mannheimer (La Cérémonie) expand the discussion, connecting The Image to questions of female authorship and the gaze.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Before launching iNNBEAUTY Project, Alisa Metzger spent over a decade inside some of the world's biggest beauty companies—L'Oréal, Procter & Gamble, and Coty—learning exactly how the industry worked from the inside out. But after years of seeing the same patterns repeat—sky-high markups, confusing claims, and a lack of true transparency—she decided to build something different. Alongside her co-founder Jen Shane, Alisa created INNBeauty Project: a brand that delivers clinically effective, clean skincare without the luxury price tag.Vegan, cruelty-free, and fragrance-free, iNNBEAUTY was designed to be as inclusive as it is high-performance—bridging the gap between clean formulas and results-driven science. The brand's bright packaging and straightforward messaging cut through the noise, offering products that actually work and make you feel good using them. Today, iNNBEAUTY Project is one of the fastest-growing clean skincare brands in the U.S., with Alisa recently named to Inc.'s 2025 Female Founders 500 list. Under her leadership, INNBeauty continues to redefine what modern beauty looks like—smart, accessible, and radically transparent. In this episode, Alisa also discusses:How she's bridging the gap between efficacy and fun in skincareCreating formulas backed by clinical results, proven to perform at the highest levelWhy Extreme Cream rivals (and often beats) $300+ luxury moisturizersWhat it meant to be one of the first clean brands at Sephora to prioritize affordabilityHow they merge science-backed formulas with playful, dopamine-boosting packagingThe meticulous approach behind crafting products for all skin types, tones, and agesWhy building a brand takes time and why patience is keyWe hope you enjoy this episode and gain valuable insights into Alisa's journey and the growth of iNNBEAUTY Project.
