Country Pop artist Sykamore returns to the show to discuss her debut full length album “Pinto”! Recorded in Nashville with producer Michael Knox (Jason Aldean, Kelly Clarkson), the new album marks more than just a chapter for Sykamore. It represents both a beginning and an end, the culmination of a remarkable journey and the start of an even more promising one. With equal parts of country and pop, Pinto pairs empathetic storytelling with instantly memorable hooks and sing-along choruses that capture the emotional rollercoaster of youth and young love in songs such as the EP's title track, “Pinto,” a soaring earworm that spins a used car into a clever metaphor for new love. Born in a small town outside of Calgary, AB, Sykamore grew up on a cattle ranch surrounded by country music which laid the groundwork for her to start writing her own songs. She relocated to Nashville in 2018 and released her first EP, Self + Medicine, which was streamed more than 1 million times and helped land her both a record deal and a spot in CMT's coveted “Next Women of Country” class for 2020. Now based in Nashville, Alberta's Sykamore is equal parts country and pop, mixing intimate reflection and empathetic storytelling with instantly memorable hooks and sing-along choruses that capture emotion of listeners of all ages and backgrounds. Her latest single is called "Go Easy On Me". Praised by Music Row as a “winner,” and named a “rising talent” by CMT who also included her in the Next Women of Country in 2020, Sykamore’s debut EP, California King, was released in April 2020. American Songwriter described the collection as, “a five-song breeze which is as relatable and funny as it is intimate and personal.” Her biggest break came in 2016 when songwriting heavyweight and country artist Rhett Akins ("That Ain't My Truck", etc) came across her music on Twitter. “I read her name, I was curious,” Rhett said in an interview. “I saw her face, I was intrigued. I heard her voice, I was done.” At Akins’ invitation, Sykamore joined the roster of Home Team Publishing (which Akins founded along with his son, country star Thomas Rhett and Roc Nation/Warner Chappell) and relocated to Nashville in 2017. There, she released her first EP, Self + Medicine, which accumulated more than 1.6 million on-demand audio streams.

Sykamore’s songwriting is equal parts country and pop, mixing intimate reflection and empathetic storytelling with instantly memorable hooks and sing-along choruses that capture the emotional rollercoaster of youth and young love. Her arrangements are eclectic and infectious to match, drawing on everything from George Strait to George Michael with performances that practically beg you to hit the highway with the volume up and the windows down. The result is an infectious collection all about honesty and vulnerability, about the strength and freedom we can unlock by embracing our truest selves, delivered by an artist who’s learned everything she knows from a lifetime of listening. The Daughter of two rodeo diehards from stampede country Canada, it only makes sense that Sykamore’s passion and fire would burst out of the badlands as it lead her to many opportunities, like being nominated for the prestigious CCMA Discovery Award in 2015 to eventually moving to Nashville and releasing her first EP in 2017. The connection that led there, a twitter conversation with songwriting heavyweight Rhett Akins, who took an interest in her music and eventually began assisting her with the foundation she had already begun to build. Which leads us to today, in which Sykamore is now proud to release her 2nd EP California King, the first to feature the lessons and influences that her travels and experiences in Nashville have brought her, and what she feels is also the best representation of herself as an artist so far as she lets go of barriers and embraces other influences from her youth. Sykamore joins the DTP to discuss her journey to Nashville, how she has grown as an artist with her new EP California King, and tells us just exactly what a California King is.
This week, Megan and Alyssa talk all about the new class of artists selected as part of the CMT Next Women of Country. Then they share Songs of the Week from Courtney Cole and Sykamore.
