It's almost been a year since Roe V Wade was overturned in the US and in that time Canadian women have watched in horror as our American sisters have their human rights violated. It's important we don't get too distracted south of the border though and pay attention to what is happening here. Megan Johnston from Abortion is Healthcare joins me to share what we need to focused on to protect our own rights. Every year Canada's most vulnerable population leaves money they are entitled to from the government on the table. These funds can make a huge difference in their lives which is why Food Banks Canada is helping helping food bank users claim refunds and benefits in partnership with KPMG. Kirstin Beardsley joins me to share how it works. Anne Brodie is in with new entertainment and this week we look at The End of Sex, an hilarious look at two people trying to spice up their marriage, Crave's comedic, satirical take on Watergate with White House Plumber, and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story which is more delicious eye candy from Shondaland. Amber Mac has been following AI and in particular deep fakes closely and joins me today to discuss how and where it's created and distributed, the damage it can cause, and what we can do about it. This is an important discussion all women need to take seriously. Canadians throw away over 3 million tonnes of plastic waste every year and only 9% is recycled while the rest ends up in our landfills, waste-to-energy facilities or the environment. Kayli Dale and Jacquie Hutchings founded Friendlier to help stem the tide of this environmental nightmare, by drastically reducing the use of single use plastics in restaurants. Anne Brodie joins me with entertainment and this week we take a look at Twice Colonized which follows Inuit lawyer and sealskin clothes designer Aaju Peter over seven years, the story of Joseph Bologne AKA Chevalier, a French Creole violinist, composer, conductor and fencer in Paris at the time of Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution, and Mrs. Davis, a fun, smart, and action-packed movie starring Betty Gilpin. Last month, Dr. Mita Manna joined me on behalf of mbctime.ca to discuss metastatic breast cancer or mbc for short, to provide valuable information for those either living with mbc or who know someone with mbc. Anne Brodie is here with new entertainment, and this week we take a look at the Palme d'Or-nominated film SHOWING UP starring Academy Award nominees Michelle Williams and Hong Chau, Sophie Jarvis' feature debut Until Branches Bend is an ambitious marriage of eco-responsibility in the face of corporate disinformation, and Mrs. Maisel's manager Susie, played by Alex Borstein, is ballsy, loud, and sharp-witted – and so is the Alex Borstein we meet in Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits, available on Prime this week. Already receiving rave reviews, Corinna joins me to share a little bit of the story behind the book. We all love finding bargain on great clothes, but fashion, particularly fast fashion has a high cost we're not thinking about enough. The environmental and social impacts that companies like Shein, H&M, and FashionNova have on our environment are disturbing, but even more disturbing is the human toll. Shari Graydon, founder of Informed Opinions is committed to changing our political landscape and has launched balanceofpower.ca to help women attain power to drive positive change in their communities and improve the lives of more Canadians. I am thrilled to share a new partnership at What She Said with Care to Know. Care to Know.ca is a free resource where Canadians receive the latest health information, updates on new and existing treatments and advice from Canadian doctors via email. Over the next six months we'll take a closer look at seasonal allergies and asthma, skincare, diabetes, weight management and menopause but today we're going to share how caretoknow works with Dr. Christine Palmay so you can stop going down rabbit holes with Dr. Google. Anne Brodie is back with another big Saturday night at the movies and this week Kiefer Sutherland is back in Rabbit Hole, a new series on Paramount, Gabriel Basso stars as a low-level FBI agent pulled into non-stop action in Netflix's new The Night Agent, Director Jean-Christophe Klotz's thrilling history of Hollywood's part in bringing Nazi war criminals to justice in Filmmakers for the Prosecution, an adaptation of Sandra Schulberg's Monograph and an urgently important documentary. Next up, Anne is back with an interview with Julian Assange's Dad and brother, John and Gabriel Shipton. Julian is perhaps The most famous hacker publisher in the world and remains in London's tough Belmarsh prison awaiting possible extradition to the US to face trial for espionage. If convicted, he faces 175 years in prison. His crime? Leaking videos of US military war crimes against Iraqis, provided to him by soldier Chelsea Manning and published on WikiLeaks. Assange's father John Shipton, and brother Gabriel continue to lobby for his release citing freedom of the press as Assange's mental and physical health continues to deteriorate. Don't miss this interview. I love a great whodunit, which is why I was so thrilled to catch up with Amy Stuart, author of the newly released A Death At the Party from Simon & Schuster. Amy joins me to share how she kept the pace non-stop in this day in a life story that will have you on the edge of your seat and guessing to the bitter end who the victim will be. Finally, food waste in Canada remains a huge problem, in fact, Canada is the worst in the world for throwing away food. Think about that. Our small little nation is #1 for all the wrong reasons. Part of the problem are those best before dates which muddy the waters for consumers about food safety. Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest joins me to clear the air.

On one hand you can't bear the thought of them leaving and on the other you're excited to see them embark on this new chapter. This is why I'm so pleased to have Senator Gigi Osler join me today to discuss her new role in Canada's senate, and how she is managing her other roles as and internationally renowned surgeon and assistant professor. Wedding season is here, and finding the perfect venue is top of mind for many would be brides and grooms. Amplifying the voices of strong, successful, and inspiring women is important and essential in today's world. That's why today's podcast is so important. Today, I have the honor of interviewing Dr. Gigi Osler, also known as Senator Gigi Osler. Senator Osler is an internationally renowned surgeon, an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, and a dedicated advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion. She has broken barriers and shattered glass ceilings in the medical field. As the first woman surgeon and the first racialized woman elected President of the Canadian Medical Association, Dr. Osler has been a trailblazer in advocating for equity and diversity in healthcare. But what makes Dr. Osler even more remarkable is her gratitude and awareness of the supportive network that helped her achieve success. She is a feminist who wants women to take up space and believes in the power of mentorship and role modeling to inspire and uplift other women. Dr. Osler's journey, from being born to immigrant parents from the Philippines and India to becoming a role model, research supervisor, and mentor for Filipino and other racialized medical students, is a testament to the resilience and determination of women who strive to succeed despite facing systemic barriers. It's essential to share stories like Dr. Osler's to give other women hope and encouragement to pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging they may seem. I hope that her story inspires my listeners to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings of their own, while advocating for equity and diversity in their fields. A small housekeeping note before we jump in though, this podcast was recorded prior to the government of Canada banning Tiktok on government devices. I encourage you to keep up with Senator Osler on her other social channels as she is a wealth of information both in medicine and politics. So, without further ado, please meet Dr. Gigi Osler.

The MLM Trap: The Reality Behind the Promises of Financial Freedom for Women

Oh man, I feel like I'm really stepping into it today with this podcast. But its an important topic to tackle so that women can be empowered with knowledge to make informed decisions. With that being said, today we're talking about Multi-Level Marketing schemes, or MLMs. MLMs are notorious for selling women in particular a dream of autonomy and financial freedom. They promise flexible working hours, unlimited income potential, and the ability to be their own boss. However, the reality they sell is far from the dream. MLMs rely on a model that focuses on recruiting people to recruit others and according to the Federal Trade Commission, 99% of recruited sellers actually lose money in an MLM venture, and a recent survey found that most people make less than 70 cents an hour before deducting business costs. Yet, MLMs continue to market their products through personal networks and social media platforms, with many women getting messages from friends, family, and barely-acquaintances selling everything from essential oils and wine to makeup and clothing. So Before we go any further, let me be clear that we are not here to judge anyone who has either purchased from or been on the representative side, of an MLM. And in full disclosure I was caught up in an MLM myself briefly during my divorce. I completely understand the appeal of the promise of financial independence, and MLMs know how to tap into that desire. However, my next guest explores the tactics MLMs used to lure women in and the reality of what it's like to participate in one of these schemes, and the pain of leaving. So, join me as we uncover the truth behind MLMs and their impact on women. Meet Julie Anderson. It's no secret that women in media are often subjected to criticism about their looks that their male counterparts rarely hear. It's 2023 and this needs to stop. My first guest today is an award-winning journalist with over two decades of experience in the industry and while we should be celebrating that part of the story, we're not. Sadly despite all of Tess van Straaten's hard work committed to her craft, she is often subjected to to comments about appearance that diminish and detract from her achievements, as she was recently when someone wrote a letter criticizing her sleeveless dress on air. She joins me to discuss her viral story. 2023 is the year we shift out of languishing and into post-traumatic growth. Candy Ho, Board Chair of Ceric, the only charitable organization of its kind in Canada, focused on career development education and research joins me today to discuss today to share insights on how to navigate the current workplace and workforce realities, in addition to resources available for those looking to build purposeful careers after nearly three years of disruption. Anne Brodie is here with entertainment and this week we take a look at LIVING, starring the absolutely wonderful Bill Nighy, in the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful. Plus Aftersun, from writer/director Charlotte Wells which dominated the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards this year. For years, nurses across the country have been sounding the alarm about the impact that staffing shortages are having on patient care—yet those warning calls have continually gone unanswered. Ontario in particular is facing a full-blown healthcare crisis and nurses have reached a breaking point. To add insult to injury, Internal documents by the Ministry of Health were released this week through the freedom of information act that shows the Ontario government knew that passing Bill 124 would worsen the province's healthcare staffing crisis. Dianne Martin from WeRPN joins me to discuss. Finally, finances are a top concern for most Canadians right now so Stephanie Chabot from the Finance Diaries is here with some tips for riding out the storm. Stephanie believes that by being able to openly discuss finance topics: we can understand them better, avoid mistakes others have made, feel more empowered, and make better decisions. How to Dismantle Public Education For Dummies

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2023 47:34

Public education is essential to a civilized society. It provides individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to fully participate in and contribute to their community. It also helps to create a more equal and just society by providing everyone with access to education, regardless of their socio-economic status or other factors. Public education helps to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and it can also foster a sense of civic responsibility and social cohesion. In addition, research has shown that public education has a number of positive impacts on society, including improved health outcomes, increased economic growth, and a reduction in crime rates. And yet, despite all the evidence that public education plays a crucial role in the development and prosperity of any society, it is under threat in Canada. So today, I play devil's advocate to Dr. Prachi Srivastava. Dr. Srivastava is a tenured Associate Professor, Western University, specialising in education and global development. She is also Member, World Bank Expert Advisory Council on Citizen Engagement, and Senior Research Fellow, NORRAG. She has been invited to provide expertise and commentary on COVID-19 education disruptions by the UNICEF Office of Global Insight and Policy, UNESCO, the BE2 education donor working group, and a range of global and Canadian civil society and non-governmental organisations. Needless to say, she could write the book on the value of public education but today we're going to write a different book. We'll call it the The Dummies Guide to Dismantling Public Education, where we explore the critical juncture in the education system and discuss the alarming issues that threaten to dismantle the well-functioning public education system in Canada. We break down the steps that those looking to dismantle public education might take and highlight the evidence that supports the importance of public education for society and individuals. We also discuss the motivations behind efforts to dismantle public education and the potential consequences of such actions.

Chris joins me today to discuss a range of topics, including how the analog and digital worlds affect calm and anxiety in different ways, how our desire for the neurochemical dopamine can lead to anxiety and a lack of appreciation for everyday experiences, and how hidden sources of stress can be tamed by a "stimulation fast." He'll also be sharing how we can use the science of "savoring" to become more present and enjoy life more, and how "busyness" is as much a state of mind as it is an actual state of life. So join us as we delve into the pursuit of calm and how it ultimately leads us to become more engaged, focused, and deliberate, while making us more productive and satisfied with our lives. In an anxious world, investing in calm can be considered the best productivity strategy around. Meet Chris Bailey. Find the book here: https://amzn.to/3Ib7i0G

Finally and most important to me, is the release of two new Christmas movies coming up this season! The Rooftop Garden, is a new novel from the host of The Globe and Mail's The Decibel podcast, Menaka Raman-Wilms, which explores timely themes including climate anxiety and the political radicalization of young men. She joins me to her why for penning her first novel. Finally, Anne had the honour of sitting in on a group interview with the Cast of Season 5 on the Crown which includes Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathon Pryce at Prince Philip, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana to name a few of the top talent in this season. We'll listen in to a bit of that at the end of today's show. When Loblaws announced last month that they were freezing prices on their no name brands, the response wasn't favourable. The public, already at or past the financial breaking point, saw it for what it was, a PR stunt meant to distract from the fact that they are making record profits at the same time that food banks are seeing their higher demand ever. Theatre took a blow during the pandemic, but who better to tackle the challenges than a creative crew. Laurie Steven is an award-winning director, playwright, dramaturge, and the founding Artistic Director of Odyssey Theatre who joins me to share how her theatre group has embraced the growing genre of audio dramas with The Other Path, a unique collection of modern folklore that tackles today's big issues on your favourite podcast provider. She joins me to share more on this life pivot and details on her new book Nosy Parker. Finally, writing a book is a lot of work. Lindsay Sealey, author of Made for More is back to discuss Gen Z women and girls and this week we take a look at the relentless pursuit of MORE. As always Anne Brodie is in with entertainment and this week we take a look at Shantaram on Apple TV+ starring Charlie Hunnam who takes us on an extreme adventure in Bombay, Plan A on TVOD which is based on the true story of a cell of Jewish underground resistance members, Welcome to Wrexham on FX Disney + starring Canada's favourite son, Ryan Reynolds, and Big Bad Budget Battle with the Pioneer Woman. Human Trafficking is often thought of as something that only happens in foreign countries, or to those who are uneducated, perhaps poor. These are dangerous concepts to hold on to. My next guest grew up in suburbia in an idyllic neighbourhood. A straight A student, self-described nerd, a young activist, no one would have thought Alexandra Stevenson would end up the victim of human sex trafficking, especially Alexandra who only came to realize she was trafficked 10 years after her escape from her groomer. It's a harrowing story with a lot of lessons we all need to sit up and pay attention to. In the podcast Alexandra shares how sex assault as a child led her straight into the arms of a trafficker as a late teen. She also shares the five stages of grooming, something we should all know how to identify, and what it's like to parent young children with CPTSD. I'm largely silent in this podcast, because the story is simultaneously horrific, uplifting, and educational. Meet Alexandra AKA, The Laughing Survivor. Truth and Reconciliation Day has passed and Orange shirts have been packed away for another year. This does not mean we can move on for another year. Only 10 of the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission have been addressed, which means activism needs to be less performative and more constructive. Samanta Krishnapillai from On Canada Project joins me to share what that should look like. Thanksgiving will not be a happy occasion for over a million Canadians this year, as inflation forces more and more people to seek relief from Canada's food banks. Food insecurity and hunger is at an all-time high and food banks are stretched to help support soaring demand. Kirstin Beardsley, CEO of Food Banks Canada wants all Canadians to know that food alone will not solve hunger and food insecurity in Canada – and shares how we can all get involved to help our neighbours and communities. Anne Brodie pops in with enough new entertainment to get you through a long weekend and the anticipated turkey coma. Lena Dunham is back with a new show she wrote and directed on Amazon Prime called Catherine Called Birdy which Anne says is a triumph of innovation and imagination. House of Hammer on Discovery takes a look at the family legacy of violence, abuse, drugs, and murder over generations in one of the world's wealthiest families. Plus The Lincoln Project on Showtime which takes a look at the the fastest-growing super PAC in America, as they take on the task of “saving democracy” and defeating their own party's sitting president. Mid-life can be a crisis for some and a time of release for others, and all of that depends largely on your mindset going into it. Jennifer John from The Sacred Space Coaching pops by with some tips on moving through this time of life with intention and purpose so that you can write the best next chapter of your life. Aging as a woman is complex. Typically as we enter our 40s, and into our 50s and 60s, our confidence and general contentment soars, but on the flip side we struggle with physical changes that shouldn't detract from our contributions or worthiness to society but often do. Case in point, Lisa LaFlamme. At the peak of her career, trusted by Canadians for decades as an exemplary newscaster, she was dumped by Bell Media apparently because she had the audacity to let her hair go grey. Then there's the lies we tell ourselves, that we're too old to change, or we can't do something because we're over the hill. Finally, we can't forget the pressure we put on ourselves and others to stay young, or the pressure we put on women to allow themselves to age naturally as if Botox was the enemy. The complexity of this issue prompted this discussion with Jennifer John and Denise Chand from The Sacred Space Coaching about aging.
