Erschienen am 21. März 2025 auf Dead Oceans. Unser Review. The Queen of Country Pop has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and won five Grammy awards, but her path to stardom was not easy. Growing up in poverty, Shania's mother sent her out to sing in bars and clubs at a young age to make ends meet. Fame found her at 30 and, to this day, Shania Twain remains the only female artist to have three consecutive diamond albums in the US. Her record-breaking second album, The Woman in Me, was released in 1995 and became the biggest-selling country album of all time by a female musician. She followed that with Come On Over, released in 1997, which became the biggest selling album of all time by a female solo artist in any genre. Shania Twain plays the Legends slot at this year's Glastonbury festival. Nick heralds Shania's arrival with a bottle of Pommery Champagne NV Brut Rosé Royal while Angela prepares two of Shania's favourite dishes, courgette fritti with truffle and artichoke mayo and a delicious aubergine parmigiana. The experts at Waitrose pair this meal with an Italian red, Araldica Barbera D'Asti Superiore.  Shania loves London and tells Nick and Ange she likes to ride horses incognito in Hyde Park. She also loves to cook and asks plenty of questions about her meal; listen out for some excellent tips from Angela. Our trio talk wellies at Glastonbury, the secret to Switzerland's culinary culture and why Shania simply couldn't make an album with Prince. New Zealand has a knack for producing talented country-pop musicians.  Self-taught Christchurch based musician Karra Rhodes has just released a single, ‘Why Can't I Love You Less', a full album on the horizon.  Rhodes loves a challenge, juggling law exams, study, writing, and raising two young children as she pushes forward with her music career.  Writing is a particular passion of hers, having been a ghost-writer for two years as well as writing her own debut fantasy novel.  She told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that music is her downtime, getting fidgety if she tries to watch TV and instead heading over to the piano or guitar.  Currently Rhodes is writing a song a week and plans to record an entire album of work in August.  “We still have a few songs to release before that, to tick people over, but we're recording, myself and Greg, are recording in August.”  Her big picture plan is to get out into the industry as a full songwriter.  “I love making my own music, I love writing,” Rhodes told Hosking.  “For me, it's not so much about getting out there and, you know, internationally touring, I just, I want a reason to write."  “I want a reason for the whole, for the songs that are right to have a home rather than, than disappear into the shadowlands of music that will never be heard.”   Rhodes has recently gotten into toplining, which is when musicians who struggle at creating lyrics or melodies for their music hire a songwriter to create them for them.  “it's fantastic because you're getting like, a whole new source of inspiration.”  She said that being a songwriter, sometimes it's easy to get stuck in the same chords, the same thing each time, so having someone else's musical beds is really good.  Being self-taught, Rhodes is used to muddling through and improvising.  “If you put a sheet of music in front of me, I'd probably struggle. If you gave me all the chords, I could just make it up.”   The ability to improvise is a skill Rhodes values and is a gift she thinks more people have than they realise, they just lack the technical knowledge to follow through.  “You want to be able to improvise on the spot, make it sound like something that you like, rather than somebody telling you what you should be doing.”  “You should be able to come up with something you enjoy."  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Country/Pop artist Torrey McDowell is set to release her debut EP Not A Man on Friday, June 2. Written by Torrey and produced by Christian Harger (Patrick Droney, Michael Shynes & Cassadee Pope), this EP will take you from joyous highs to tearful lows as you experience relationship struggles and her journey to self-acceptance. “This EP is as personal as it gets for me. The songs will take you on a journey of self-acceptance, following intuition and love. Above all, I want listeners to feel empowered to be their true and authentic selves,” says Torrey. This EP is a reflection of the struggles Torrey faced opening up about her identity. It showcases the theme of wanting to find acceptance for who you are and who you love. The EP features four singles including the title track Not A Man, which is a heartbreaking example of what it's like to feel you will never be accepted solely because of who you love. The other tracks like Come Back to Georgia, It Gets Better and Outloud are available now. Having penned or co-penned nearly every song on this EP, Torrey showcases her songwriting skills and creative genre-bending melodies in this release. The latest single off the EP, Come on Back to Georgia, garnered mentions on AP News and was featured on The Q LGBTQ Creative Network's New Queer Friday playlist on Spotify. Georgia-born Nashville transplant Torrey McDowell is a survivor. Having battled depression and overcome an abusive relationship, Torrey owns her identity as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. She draws inspiration from all corners of the musical spectrum and has been compared to her influences JoJo, Jennifer Hudson, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Smith and other cross-genre creators. Fans can pre-save Not A Man by clicking here: https://onerpm.link/NotAMan_TM “Working with Torrey on this project was such a blast. From the very first meeting we had, we had her vulnerability, authenticity and joyful presence began to steer the ship in the perfect direction," says producer Christian Harger. She's prepared to shoulder the real things and put them in song, right out in the open. Torrey will be soaring before we know it!” – Leah Hudson-Binkerd, Banner Music “Torrey is an artist focused on being true to herself. She picks songs and writes lyrics that take her real life and find the beauty in experience. Her integrity as an artist is what sets her apart and will turn heads. Working with her is to spend time with a friend; she always brings her whole self to a write.” – Caroline Kid, CMT.com featured artist About Torrey McDowell What began as a love of choir and music in her youth ultimately blossomed into a passion for artist Torrey McDowell. In second grade, Torrey began songwriting and went on to earn a vocal performance scholarship to continue her musical passions at Piedmont University. With equal parts of country and pop, Pinto pairs empathetic storytelling with instantly memorable hooks and sing-along choruses that capture the emotional rollercoaster of youth and young love in songs such as the EP's title track, “Pinto,” a soaring earworm that spins a used car into a clever metaphor for new love.    Born in a small town outside of Calgary, AB, Sykamore grew up on a cattle ranch surrounded by country music which laid the groundwork for her to start writing her own songs. So they're making School Year's Resolutions to help deal with all of the firsts that new routines and experiences will bring. Brie also has some hilarious observations about Birdie's personality as she gets ready for a new school year. Nikki also loves rumors, especially DWTS casting rumors, but so far, she's just not getting the kind of casting gossip she needs. But she is impressed with the status of Artem's body as he gets ready for another season on the show. Brie, on the other hand, is wrapped up in celebrity sightings around Lake Tahoe. It's game time once again on The Bellas Podcast! Nikki introduces a new game, Hot & Cold, that comes with some serious opinions. Topics range from celebrity breakups to Serena Williams' retirement, Snoop Dogg's cereal, the sudden surge in vaginal surgeries, and much more. This episode's Inspiration & Affirmation comes from The Queen of Country Pop herself, Shania Twain. Nikki chose a special quote about maximizing opportunity from Shania that grabbed her attention. Call The Bellas at 855-3BELLAS and leave a voicemail! Follow Nikki & Brie on Instagram. To watch exclusive videos of this week's episode, follow The Bellas Podcast on Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok!

Executive Editor of Dwell, Kate Dries, joins DJ Louie to talk the Queen of Country Pop, Shania Twain. First, Kate lays out some of the scant historical examples of country icons who have managed to crossover into mainstream pop stardom like Dolly Parton and explains a bit about why Nashville has been a hermetically-sealed ecosystem, resistant to change, outsiders and country artists who have ambitions beyond its traditional scope. Next, Louie and Kate discuss Shania's upbringing in Canada, surviving abject poverty, a household rife with domestic abuse, and the untimely death of both of her parents by writing, singing and performing in local bars beginning when she was just 8 years-old. They then move on to Shania's discovery performing at a resort in Canada which lead to her record deal Mercury Nashville, her flop first album, 1993's Shania Twain, her chance meeting with rock super-producer Robert "Mutt" Lange who quickly became her partner in both music and life through her massive run of success from the mid '90s-early '00s, and the genre-busting sound the pair developed on her blockbuster sophomore release, 1995's The Woman in Me. Louie and Kate also dive into Shania's third record, 1997's legendary Come On Over, which stands to this day as one of the biggest selling albums in history and provided the platform for Shania to make the leap from country legend to mainstream pop icon, parse apart how smashes like "You're Still the One", "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" displayed Shania's unique combo of girl-next-door approachability, '90s middle-finger-up feminist attitudes and an infectious sense of carefree joy and fun, how her flair for presenting herself visually and sartorially in music videos was both integral to her crossover and forever seared her into pop cultural memory, her globe-trotting fourth album, 2002's Up!, the dissolution of her marriage to Mutt and her subsequent loss of her ability to sing, her comeback Vegas residency and her 5th album, 2017's Now, and her legacy and impact on the pop landscape to this day. Finally, Louie and Kate rank Shania Twain in the official Pop Pantheon. Check Out Louie's Shania Twain Essentials PlaylistCheck out Louie's TRL Essentials PlaylistJoin the Pop Pantheon Discord!Follow DJ Louie XIV on InstagramFollow DJ Louie XIV on TwitterFollow Pop Pantheon on InstagramFollow Pop Pantheon on TwitterFollow Kate Dries on Twitter
