For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali caught up with writer Karen Campbell to talk about her latest novel This Bright Life, which will be published later this month with Canongate Books.Karen gives a synopsis of the novel before breaking down the three central characters of Gerard, Margaret and Claire and their role in events, why it had to be set in Glasgow, and, more widely, the importance of place. The two then talk about Karen's novels more generally (this is her ninth), the themes and ideas which interest her, writing about people who all too rarely appear on the page, and how she has changed as a writer over time. There is also a conversation about other Scottish novels, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Hugh MacDiarmid, and the notable impact of, and response to, her previous novel Paper Cup. It's always a pleasure to talk to Karen, and with This Bright Life one of SWH!'s Ten Books for 2025 it was a privilege to be able to discuss it in such detail.Full details, including all the ways to listen, are over at scotswhayhae.com

Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 0:47  Welcome back to Be It Till You See It. Today is your Fuck Yeah Friday, your adult version of TGIF. You know that weekly episode that you're like, this is gonna drop, and it's gonna remind me that there are wins out there and you know what is also like, really important, if you got to this episode and you're looking for a way to skip out of it because you're like, because, like, (inaudible) what's going on? Brad Crowell 0:47  Yeah. It's a big deal. Lesley Logan 1:06  Does that make you think that other people are winning and you're not? We have to slap, slap, slap. Brad Crowell 1:12  Change that up. Lesley Logan 1:12  This is where you go and youBrad Crowell 1:15  This is an opportunity to know that good still happens in the world. Lesley Logan 1:21  Yes. Brad Crowell 1:22  Yeah. Lesley Logan 1:22  Yes. And that led to you go, oh. Also sometimes you go oh, I had that win.Brad Crowell 1:27  Yeah, maybe good is happening in my life, but I'm not seeing it. Lesley Logan 1:30  Yeah, Yeah. So okay, first up, the win that you sent into us is Adrienne McCaskey and she is Agency member. We probably just saw her in Pennsylvania, actually. Brad Crowell 1:40  Oh, yeah. Lesley Logan 1:40  So coming from my I-need-a-moment, so I'll just say, if you find yourself complaining in your life, this is me talking not Adrienne, find yourself complaining in your life, you need to finish your complaint and then find a win. So that's what's happening here. I'm struggling to think of specific wins as of late. So, that said, I'm feeling good about how I've been able to be more present with my kids after school and in my off hours. Thanks to more automation and use of my scheduling tool and trying to get clients to schedule and cancel themselves. Brad Crowell 2:10  That is awesome. Lesley Logan 2:11  Yeah, that's fucking amazing. Brad Crowell 2:13  Fantastic. Lesley Logan 2:14  That's a huge win. Brad Crowell 2:15  Yeah, that's exactly why you want a scheduling tool. So, good job. Lesley Logan 2:19  Yeah. Also, thanks to some tips from others and the agency group, I've been better about setting reminders and sticking to schedules for admin tasks like tax deadlines, cleaning, etc., so Idon't fall behind or let these things sneak up on me. Every little bit of organization helps. Setting a reminder and then looking at it, I mean, I think you won, Adrienne, I think you won. This is like The Game Of Life. You just won it. I love that and I love that.Brad Crowell 2:47  You know, I've never played that game. Lesley Logan 2:48  The Game Of Life? Brad Crowell 2:49  I've never played it. Lesley Logan 2:49  The first time I played it, I gave me six children. I had the kids under the van and I had a split-level house, which on the card. Brad Crowell 2:55  What? Lesley Logan 2:55  Can you tell it traumatized me? Brad Crowell 2:56  What is this game? Lesley Logan 2:57  The Game Of Life? Brad Crowell 2:59  Never played it. Lesley Logan 2:59  Oh, we should just get it and play it at Thanksgiving. So you like spin, and it tells you like a number, and that helps you choose a job. And you pull a card and you can end up being a cop or a teacher or a surgeon, right? And then you go at other things, like, okay, now choose your pay, right? And then you draw a random card, you can get $10,000 a year, that could be your pay. But then it's like, oh, taxes are due. It's like Monopoly, but not. You're not buying much houses. But I had six kids, because every time it was like, oh, you just had a baby. It's like, oh my God. And another kid, all these kids, like, stacked on my little car. And then I had a split level house. And the drawing of the house when it was a split level had a split down like it was a trashy house. Brad Crowell 3:39  Oh. Lesley Logan 3:38  And by the way, split level houses are not it just means that there's a split level. So I thought The Game Of Life was being a little harsh on some people. You could also get a (inaudible). You learn about all the different types of homes you can get. It's very interesting. We have to play it. Okay, let's get back to one more win of yours. This is from Karen Campbell. Celebrating that I've been honing in on my ICA, so that's a ideal client avatar, and this week, things have really clicked. I have the most true to me, I Help statement that I have ever had. It's been a culmination of all the conversations, coaching calls, webinars, inside of Agency, as well as leaning into the use of AI for help with marketing messaging.Brad Crowell 3:39  Great.Lesley Logan 3:39  Thank you, LL, Brad, Kirsten, Kirsten has an AI course that Karen's leaning into, and Rachel Piper, and for the recent Monica Linda and Nadine Hanafi webinars. So grateful. Brad Crowell 4:25  Awesome. Lesley Logan 4:26  Good things are coming because I've gained the clarity needed to move the needle forward. Boom. Brad Crowell 4:34  Man, she's on a roll. Lesley Logan 4:35  She's on a roll. So Monica Linda has been on the Be It Pod, and so has Nadine Hanafi. And if you are wanting Nadine's amazing branding stuff, it is brilliant, and we've linked to it in her podcast episode. And so please take a look at that so you can get our little Be It Pod link to figure out what your colors are and things like that. But also, I just want to highlight this is a culmination of conversation. Brad Crowell 4:58  Yeah. Lesley Logan 4:58  I heard about I Help statement, I should have an I Help statement, and it can take time. Brad Crowell 5:02  It takes time. I was just on a coaching call with another Agency member, and I'm going to remain anonymous because I didn't tell I was going to share this, but she said for years I've struggled with my I Help statement and the frustrations that I've had in the past couple weeks have suddenly made it really clear to me what my I Help statement needs to be. Lesley Logan 5:24  Oh. Brad Crowell 5:25  Yeah. And because when we go through some bullshit, you suddenly know what you do and don't want and who you do want to work with and you don't want to work with and why. And so it can allow those things to become more clear, but maybe sometimes you just have to go through something first before that clarity comes to you. So it's a tough thing to demand instantaneously, even though you can be thinking about it, thinking about it. So Karen, I know it's really exciting, so I'm happy for you. This is fantastic. Great job. Yeah.Lesley Logan 5:53  Yeah. Okay, so I thought today would be a good time to reflect on things that you don't have to join in, because I didn't tell you this before we hit record, but on things that I said I want to do this year and celebrate what I did do on that. So I'll start. And if you think of something that you wanted to do this year, and you can tell us how it's going. Brad Crowell 6:13  I'd have to look at my phone, but I have something in mind. I don't know if I did it or not. Lesley Logan 6:18  Okay, so I wanted to be more intentional about getting into the Las Vegas community, and like having friends in Las Vegas, doing things with friends. And I will say, we planned a few things, and I'm like, Las Vegas' canceled. This is not a complaint. But also, I got to hang out with another Las Vegas multiple times, and I tried out new restaurants with her. And so I'm gonna call it a win. I also tried out a library card, and I tried out pole dancing, and I tried to, like, get to know more parts of the city, and we tried out new restaurants, and we were open to going to dinner with different particular couples or potential couples. And so I feel like even with all the travel we had, I definitely took advantage of the Vegas time that I had, and it's really easy to go reflect on that. Go, I could have done more. Oh, I could have actually reached out to them a week before. I could have done this. That's not how you do wins everyone. So what I did do is more than I did a year ago, and more than the year before that. And I really am proud of that intentionality, and I'm excited for the year to come because I have more people in Las Vegas to spend time with. So that's really cool. Lesley Logan 7:23  Another thing that I also had wins throughout the year already about this is just like being more intentional with girlfriends and talking to them, and I got to see all of my girlfriends multiple times in the year and hang out with them in person. And so I'm really proud about that. I think that's really cool. Brad Crowell 7:40  That's awesome. Lesley Logan 7:40  Yeah, I also had this goal of really trying to figure what's wrong with my stomach and with my health and my sleep, and with the help of FemGevity, I fucking got answers, and I really am loving how I'm feeling, like I'm going into next year feeling better than I did last year. Yeah, so that's a huge win. And then I will say I wanted to have more time in my schedule, and it took us several months and some big battles, but I got a bunch of my time back. And did I use that extra time to work on the things that I wanted to learn? No. Brad Crowell 8:15  But that's kind of okay.Lesley Logan 8:16  That's okay because the goal was to get the time back.Brad Crowell 8:18  We've also been push, push, push for years, so, you know, taking a rest with that time is also incredibly helpful. Lesley Logan 8:25  I also was like, what is it like to get bored? Let's try that. And I also got better ideas not filling that time. That's why the win doesn't have to be I got time and then I used it somewhere else. I got some time back and I used it to play a video game and read a book and lay on my (inaudible) and talk to some girlfriends and I have time like the other day, I saw a friend's story. I never watched her stories, and I saw her story, and she was going through something, and I was just like, hey, I'm free at 9am on Monday. Do you want to have a chat? I got on the phone with her, and because I had the time and I wasn't behind on projects, I can go here's how I think I can solve your problem, and here's who you should call. And that's what I did. And it was a 15-minute call, and I was like, okay, bye. And so I just am really proud that I gave myself time that wasn't filled with other things, so that I could be there for people or do things spontaneously. Brad Crowell 9:11  Yeah, well, that's awesome. Those are great. I got a couple that come to mind. This year, I wanted to shift away from some of the managing of the company that I have been doing historically, because I am very passionate, but I'm also very hands on and controlling. And so by relinquishing the projects to people who are incredibly capable and could do the job, it's been allowing me to focus on shifting into a different position in the company, which still is the CEO role, but more of a sales and marketing side of things. So I'm still, you know, ultimately, handling stuff, but I'm not micromanaging like I was, and that's been a really different way to work, and it's also allowed me to connect more with our clients who are coming in, and also effectively move the needle of the sales in a good way. So that's a big win. The word for the year for me was stability. Lesley Logan 10:11  Oh.Brad Crowell 10:11  Yeah. Lesley Logan 10:12  You and Michael Unbroken has a word for his year. He does it on his birth. I don't, I can't pick a word. But anyways.Brad Crowell 10:18  Wow. 2024, my goal was stability, and what that meant is last year was really intense, topsy-turvy as far as launches and income and travel and all the things, and this year was just as busy, but it didn't feel as chaotic, and it was also more we were able to high-level with our company, we're able to shift when we were getting the income. And so it gave us better cash flow management, which any business owner out there understands what I mean. It's great to make a bunch of money at the beginning of the year, but then if you make no money in the middle of the year, you're like, oh my God, do we still have enough? And so we were able to make some adjustments and shift things around as far as when we were doing what we were doing, and that has made my stress levels incredibly better this past year than it was a year ago. So I'm super proud of our team for that. I'm proud, I mean, it was a team effort to be able to do that. Lesley Logan 11:15  Yeah, I'm also proud of us and also you. Here's the thing, you can ask the team do all of these things, and we can change things around so that it feels more stable. Then you also have to let go of the muscle that likes to stress and worry. That's the think. Like, that's a habit. Stress is a habit. Stressing about things you can't control, habit.Brad Crowell 11:35  That's true. Yeah. And the last thing which I need my phone to be able to answer is my goal was to get seven hours of sleep this year, a night. Lesley Logan 11:42  Oh, on average? Brad Crowell 11:44  On average. And I know I got six for sure. Lesley Logan 11:47  Can we just log in on your computer to Oura? Brad Crowell 11:50  I mean, can I? Lesley Logan 11:51  I think you can. Yeah. Brad Crowell 11:52  Okay, here we go. Well, I got six hours on average. Lesley Logan 11:56  And you wanted seven? Brad Crowell 11:57  I wanted seven. Six hours and 15. Lesley Logan 12:00  Here's what I think we should do, Brad, we'll get our 2024 reports at the end of this year while we're on tour. And then when we come back from tour and we do the FYFs for February, you and I will share any changes we want to make to our health, as far as what we can track, as far as sleep goes. Brad Crowell 12:17  Dig it.Lesley Logan 12:18  Okay, here we go. I think that this is the most applicable mantra that could exist for wrapping the 2024 FYFs up for the year. I am growing and going at my own pace. I am growing and going at my own pace. I am growing and going at my own pace. Guys, that could be your mantra for the whole fucking year. So you know what to do. Lesley Logan 12:44  All right, loves. We hope you really enjoyed. I don't know, if you think that these suck, you can tell us, but here's the thing, I listened to this one podcast I've been inspired. I said it on during one of the roundups, the rewinds, one of the reviews gave him five stars and then said this host is lacking and is not doing a great job. So don't say that. You can email that in, but give us five stars, and then email the team like, hey, the FYF suck, or hey, I really wish you did X, Y and Z. You're welcome to tell us. I'm not gonna say we'll make changes. This is who we are, but the goal, again, of the FYFs is to remind you that good things are happening, and even when you're feeling like you're in a shit hole, like a lotus flower can grow from that, and so wins can come from the weirdest places. Until next time, Be It Till You See It. Happy New Year. Have an amazing one. Brad Crowell 13:31  Bye for now. Lesley Logan 13:33  That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. How does the brain's memory function change as we grow older? What recent discoveries are helping us understand these changes better?  In this episode of Under the Cortex, Özge Gürcanlı Fischer Baum welcomes Karen Campbell of Brock University to discuss how aging impacts memory. Campbell shares insights from her recent study in APS's journal Current Directions in Psychological Science, exploring the hyber-binding hypothesis. The conversation delves into how the abundance of connections in older adults' mental representations may contribute to memory challenges later in life.  If you're interested in learning more about this research, visit psychologicalscience.org.    Send us your thoughts and questions at  underthecortex@psychologicalscience.org

Winter health aims for runners: protect against winter infections, support the immune function and promote circulation and blood flow in the cold weather. In this episode we focus on 4 seasonal fruits and vegetables to support health and running performance during the winter months. We outline the nutritional properties of each and consider how they can form part of your meal plan with some menu ideas. Finally, we share an example 1-day meal plan using these 4 winter foods. The 4 foods we discuss are; Butternut Squash, Cranberries, Pears and BeetrootNutritional Properties of Butternut Squash – a great source of carbohydrate, Vitamin C, and B vitamins – supportive of immune system, energy production and soft tissue support.Nutritional Properties of Cranberries – packed full of phytonutrients, in particular proanthocyanidin (PAC) helpful to prevent and treat infections. Many studies highlight positive effect on urinary tract infections. The key mechanism being that PACs inhibit the adhesion of bacteria to the wall of the urinary tract.Nutritional Properties of Pears – contain the phytonutrient epicatechin, a compound thought to be involved in the contraction and relaxation of arteries, so supportive of our cardiac cardiac health.Nutritional Properties of Beetroot – contain nitrates which help promote blood flow and they have been shown to help dilate blood vessels. This helps to enable an increase and efficient flow of oxygen through the blood vessels, which clearly is going to provide us with more energy and for our running. Beet greens are also nutrient dense providing calcium, iron and vitamin C.KEY TAKE AWAYS:1.Butternut Squash for carbohydrate, vitamin C, and B vitamins for fuel, energy and supporting your immune system2.Cranberries for Proanthocyanidin (PAC) to support immune system, protect against infections, especially urinary tract infections3.Pears for Epicatechin to support blood flow and contraction and relaxation of arteries4.Beetroot for nitrates to support dilation of blood vessels and efficient flow of oxygen via blood vesselsIntroductionRelated Topics:Disclaimer:The suggestions we make during this episode are for guidance andadvice only, and are not a substitute for medical advice or treatment. If you have any concerns regarding your health, please contactyour healthcare professional for advice as soon as possible.Aileen Smith and Karen Campbell host RUNNERS HEALTH HUB. The nutrients we discuss are:Vitamin CVitamin DMagnesiumOmega 3Beta-glucansBut as well as the nutrients you may wish to consider, we also give you some practical tips to help keep you safe and warm as you head out the door on those cold winter mornings including:Remaining visibleFoot wearLayering upOmitting riskKEY TAKEAWAYS:1.There are many nutrients to consider to help keep you healthy during the winter months, however our 5 principal ones are: Vitamin C and D, Magnesium, Omega-3 and Beta-Glucans.2.These 5 key nutrients have many diverse roles in health and wellbeing, but they are all important in supporting immune health3.Remember that women are more susceptible to autoimmune conditions. So a good reason to try and maintain optimal immune health all year round, but especially during the winter months. 4.There are daily Recommended Nutrition Intake levels for most nutrients set out by UK govt bodies, however these are set at levels known to prevent illness in the majority of people, they are not recommended optimal intake levels. 5.Remember that certain nutrients can be lost from food through exposure to air, cooking methods and other factors so be mindful of this when considering your daily intake of key nutrients for your winter running.6.Moving away from food and nutrients and thinking about the practicalities of winter running. It is important that we take extra precautions when running outside, both for our safety and for our health. 7.Ensure you can see and bee seen. Run in well-lit areas wherever possible and consider wearing a high-viz jacket and head torch. 8.Keep warm, especially if going out for a long run. Wear layers as you can always take them off and tie hem round your waist. Remember to take a hat and gloves, remember exposure of the head and face are thought to account for a large proportion of body heat loss.9.Finally, don't take risks, if the weather or environmental conditions are not conducive to safe running then keep active doing another sport for a short while e.g. swimming, gym, treadmill, spinningIntroduction insertRelated Topics:Endurance Running and Immune SystemWhy do runners need Vitamin DA Spotlight on Vitamin C for RunnersDisclaimer:The suggestions we make during this episode are for guidance andadvice only, and are not a substitute for medical advice or treatment. If you have any concerns regarding your health, please contactyour healthcare professional for advice as soon as possible.Aileen Smith and Karen Campbell host

With Ziyana Kotadia and Karen Campbell. Content note: this episode addresses sexual violence. Too Scared to Learn: Women, Violence, and Education by Jenny Horsman (2013) uncovers how violence negatively impacts a student's ability to learn. It focusses on women's literacy, but the broader lesson is clear. None of us can properly learn when we're scared and targeted. This has huge implications for girls, women, and gender-diverse students in all schools, as well as huge implications for post-secondary environments like colleges and universities, where sexual violence is a particular problem. It's the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a great time to talk about ending sexual violence on campus. Our first guest is Ziyana Kotadia, an advocate and writer in her final year of an Honours Specialization in Global Gender Studies and a Minor in Feminist, Queer and Critical Race Theory from Western University and Huron University College. She's Chair of the Safe Campus Coalition and a contributor to the Our Campus, Our Safety Action Plan, a call for action from students all over Canada. Ziyana is passionate about poetry, performance, and politics and has a keen interest in exploring intersections among the worlds of academia, art, and advocacy. She was the 2021-2022 Vice-President University Affairs for Western's University Students' Council, one of the nation's leading student organizations, where she championed gender equity projects and the voices of over 35,000 undergraduate and professional students as the Chief Advocate and Stakeholder Relations Manager to the university's senior administration. Her most recent publications include her op-ed “Universities Need a Consent Awareness Week in Ontario” in the ‘Toronto Star', her second-place winning poem "Heir to A Garden Heart" in ‘Symposium', and her academic article "Poetry, Prayer, and Politics: An Autoethnographic Exploration of Womanhood in the Canadian Ugandan Khoja Ismaili Diaspora" in ‘Liberated Arts: A Journal for Undergraduate Research'. Our second guest, Karen Campbell, Director of Community Initiatives & Policy at the Canadian Women's Foundation. She speaks new research we did in collaboration with the McGill University iMPACTS initiative, documented in a report entitled: Social Media and Mobilizing Change for Community Impacts. It explores the connection between students, social media, and sexual assault on university and college campuses. London Marathon Milestone 5: Being Prepared for Race Day This is the FIFTH and final episode in our London Marathon Milestone series, so race day is fast approaching. To ensure everyone is race day ready, we look at nutritional and lifestyle strategies to encourage adequate and quality sleep in the coming days (and nights!!). We also outline some food and nutrition strategies to ensure everyone is fuelled appropriately on race day and then finish with some TIPS on being physically and mentally prepared for the BIG event. SHOW NOTES  (04:13) Outlining the importance of SLEEP for a marathon runner with an emphasis on “good sleep health”  (09:21) Some nutritional TIPS for attaining optimal sleep including: STOP caffeine intake by midday Increase magnesium rich foods DAILY for example: dark green leafy vegetables, dark chocolate, nuts and seeds Increase daily protein intake for example: chicken, fish, eggs, tofu (11:49) Introducing some lifestyle TIPS for attaining optimal sleep including: Get to bed ONE HOUR earlier Aim to complete ALL tasks by 8pm Prepare the bedroom for sleep for example: tidy away anything lying around Introduce restorative yoga (17:07) Thinking about food and nutrition strategies for race day including: Night before the marathon – a healthy, balanced and colourful meal with optimal complex carbohydrate foods and adequate protein portion Morning of the marathon – a healthy and balanced breakfast between 2-4 hours before the race During the marathon – a quick release carbohydrate snack every 30-60 minutes throughout (27:32) Highlighting hydration and electrolyte supplementation  (36:23) TIPS on being physically prepared on race day including: Use the “What if….?” Strategy. Think of a potential circumstance that could change on race day (e.g. the weather) then come up with a strategy to overcome the obstacle Set ABC goals Write a check list of EVERYTHING you will need on race day e.g. food, phone, bib number, safety pins, money (47:11) KEY TAKEAWAYS Restorative sleep means having sufficient sleep for an appropriate duration that them leaves you feeling satisfied afterwards. This then allows for high efficiency and sustained alertness during waking hours There are many nutritional and lifestyle approaches you could implement to help support good sleep health including: no stimulants after midday, increase intake of Mg rich foods (including DGLV), switch off all screens at least an hour before bed, restorative yoga Think about the meal you will choose to eat the night before the race and ensure that it is balanced but with a good amount of complex carbohydrates to help maintain glycogen stores Race day food and hydration choices are equally important and remember that your choices will depend on how much time you have from waking until you start running Don't forget to pack some food for after the race too…you don't want to become over hungry as it could lead to detrimental physical and psychological symptoms Finally, to help ensure you don't forget ANYTHING – produce a checklist and tick off each item as you prepare for race day RELATED TOPICS https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/food-for-sleep (Food For Sleep) https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/Eat-Sleep-Run (Eat Sleep Run) https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/fuelling-marathon-running (Fuelling Marathon Running) Listen to ALL the London Marathon Milestone series Disclaimer: The suggestions we make during this episode are for guidance and advice only, and are not a substitute for medical advice or treatment. Marathon Running....Hitting the Wall “Hitting the Wall” (or “bonking” as it is often referred) is a phenomenon synonymous with running and is described as an “iconic” feature of marathon distance events occurring around the 20mile (30Km) mark. Did you know that approximately 40% of marathon runners experience Hitting the Wall in any given race…that is high!! So, to help you understand this phenomenon a little more and hopefully prevent it occurring on YOUR marathon events we: Outline what “Hitting the Wall” is and why it may occur Discuss the impact on a runner of “Hitting the Wall” Focus on training and nutrition to help avoid experiencing “Hitting the Wall”  SHOW NOTES (04:43) Defining what Hitting the Wall is and establishing the relationship between glycogen status, fatigue and the onset of this phenomenon.  (09:39) Considering some of the Risk Factors to Hitting the Wall occurring during a marathon event including: Poor glycogen stores Poor pacing Age Gender Being a novice/first time marathon runner (15:06) FEMALE FACTORS: Females being less likely to HTW than males Females being better at pacing the marathon than males (therefore less likely to HTW) as I mentioned earlier, but also: Some research has suggested that females are physiologically better suited to distance running than males e.g. have a greater utilisation of stored glycogen and are able to run aerobically at a higher percentage of maximum O2 uptake than their male counterparts Some research has noted that females take marathon distance more seriously therefore train appropriately whereas males tend to be more “bullish” and have an abundance of “bravado” in their approach to a marathon…even in the face of limited training If a female HTW, it tends to be with less intensity than in males If a female HTW, she is more likely to recover than a male  (18:05) Outlining the signs and symptoms of Hitting the Wall including: An abrupt slowing of pace An overwhelming feeling of fatigue Poor concentration An overwhelming desire to walk And discussing potential recovery strategies from Hitting the Wall (27:18) Thinking about approaches to training to help minimise the risk of Hitting the Wall occurring during a marathon (32:32) Focussing on nutrition strategies pre and during the marathon to help prevent Hitting the Wall (44:53) KEY TAKEAWAYS: Hitting the Wall is a familiar experience for many runners during a marathon event and is characterized by a sudden and dramatic slowing of pace around the 20 mile (30Km) mark Runners tend to hit the wall due to a combination of factors including: inadequate fuelling and poor pacing decisions Research suggests that Hitting the Wall has both a physiological and a psychological element to it So, a marathon runner needs to be both physically and emotionally prepared ahead of race day Carbohydrate intake pre and during the race is fundamental in limiting the chances of a marathon runner Hitting the Wall BUT….if all else fails and you do HTW, remember as physically and psychologically challenging as it may be…it is only temporary!! Having this knowledge alone may be enough to get you through it and to the finish line!! Healthy Mind for Happy Running Introduction Exercise and nutrition are known to play a role in developing and altering brain function and studies have shown that both exercise and nutrition could affect mind/mood and cognition positively and negatively. So, we: Outline some mind/mood symptoms runners may experience and why Discuss foods/nutrients that may induce negative or promote positive mood and mindset in runners Create a one-day meal plan you may wish to consider for a healthy mind and happy running SHOW NOTES (06:56) Discussing the positive endorphin effects of moderate running before moving on to outline the potential negative psychological effects of intense and/or prolonged running (10:51) Considering the potential drivers of detrimental mind/mood symptoms associated with endurance or intense running.   (19:37) FEMALE FACTORS 1) The strain of mental health (and behavioural disorders) is estimated to account for more years of lived disability than any other chronic health ailment. From data collected between 2007 to 2017 the global proportion of disability-adjusted life years caused by mental ill-health has increased from:  • Males: 12.7% to 14%  • Females: 13.6% to 14.4% So, from these statistics, the years lived with mental ill health has increased for both men and women, however it would appear women are at increased risk of developing mental health issues besides men.  2) Female *obligatory (obsessive) runners are most at risk of eating pathophysiology than their male counterparts or non-obsessive runners 3) Commitment to running can occur without addiction in female runners but not in males NOTE: * Obligatory runners - obsessive runners who sacrifice commitments and relationships for running and suffer withdrawal symptoms if they miss a run  (24:38) Highlighting potential dietary lifestyles that may enhance mental wellbeing or possibly be a driver of poor mind/mood and cognition symptoms with a focus on the common Western Diet and the Traditional Mediterranean Diet.  (35:39) Exploring foods/meals to support positive mental wellbeing therefore enhance running performance Foods discussed include: Eggs, legumes, fermented foods, and a variety of vegetables.   (43:53) KEY TAKEAWAYS Moderate running is known to be a therapeutic tool for different negative psychological conditions, such as: depression, anxiety, tension, mood changes and low self esteem  However intense and/or prolonged running may lead to detrimental mind/mood symptoms in some people Our diet can also affect our emotions and cognitive function in a positive or detrimental way with the common Western Diet leading to low mood/cognition and the Mediterranean diet encouraging positive emotions and mindset A compromised immune system and a poor gut microbiome are thought to be the key drivers of low mood/cognition due to their influence on inflammation As well as affecting us physically, inflammation is known to affect: Energy, Sleep and Motivation….amongst other things Increasing intake of whole foods and following a traditional Mediterranean diet has been found to diminish many emotional/psychological symptoms such as low mood/depression/anxiety RELATED EPISODES: https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/Eat-Sleep-Run (Eat Sleep Run) https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/food-for-gut-healing (Food for Gut Healing) https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/endurance-running-and-immune-system (Endurance Running and the Immune System) Disclaimer: The suggestions we make during this episode are for guidance and advice only, and are not a substitute for medical advice or treatment. Introduction to Nutrigenomics for Runners Nutrigenomics is a relatively new approach to personalised nutrition and is still in its infancy in the world of sports nutrition. So in this episode we outline the definition of Nutrigenomics and introduce you to how it is currently being explored and adapted as an approach to personalised nutrition for athletic performance Show Notes (04:15) Defining Nutrigenomics and outlining WHY it is being explored as an approach to enhance sports performance (13:08) Outlining specific nutrients and how genetics may influence how they are used by the body  (15:45) Discussing the genetic variants for CAFFEINE and how they could affect and modify a runner's response to health and their performance?  (19:58) Discussing the genetic variants for IRON and how they could affect and modify a runner's response to health and their performance?  (25:34) Discussing the genetic variants for VITAMIN B12 and how they could affect and modify a runner's response to health and their performance?  (27:08) FEMALE FCTORS Females tend to be at increased risk of iron deficiency due to the menstrual cycle. They are also thought to have a lower overall energy intake from food compared to males. So, if they also have the risk gene for low iron status, then their risk of iron deficiency anaemia could be further elevated.   When going through that menopause and moving into the phase of not menstruating, there is, for some women, a period of a few months and up to a year where iron levels could be higher than normal. This would be a time when women should avoid any iron supplementation due to the risk of iron overload and toxicity, especially for women who may have the risk gene for haemochromatosis.  (33:25) Looking at how to put the knowledge into practice – which tests to choose  (39:17) KEY TAKEAWAYS Nutrigenomics for runners and all athletes uses genomic technologies and genetic information to address issues important to nutrition, health, body composition and performance Nutrigenomics is still in its infancy when relating it to sports performance, however it would appear it is HERE TO STAY… but more research is required Remember our genes load the gun but our lifestyles (and environment) pull the trigger…so, even if we have an “at risk” gene it does not mean that it HAS TO BE expressed Genetic testing alone is not necessarily helpful, a FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE approach to care alongside other tests (blood/urine) would be far more beneficial to the athlete There are many nutrients that have been studied for their genetic variants, however some that are pertinent to a runner include: Caffeine, Iron and Vitamin B12 If you are considering DNA testing to support your health and running performance, remember to use a reputable testing company. We recommend you work with a professional who is trained/certified in interpreting the test results and who can give appropriate and personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations. Spotlighting Colostrum...What We Know We probably all know that Colostrum is the first milk produced by ALL mammals just before giving birth to nourish their newborn. BUT did you know that Bovine Colostrum has been used in sport as a potential ergogenic aid for almost 25yrs?? So, to enlighten us all further, in this episode we: Delve deeper into what Bovine Colostrum is and why it is proving popular in Sport Discuss its known sports performance effects Debate whether YOU could consider it as an ergogenic aid SHOW NOTES (03:35) Outlining the nutrient content of Bovine Colostrum (06:22) Determining some key nutritional differences between Bovine Colostrum and Human Colostrum   (09:56) Outlining some of the direct and indirect performance enhancing abilities of Bovine Colostrum including: Body composition Power and strength Immune Function Recovery from training  (14:03) Delving deeper into Bovine Colostrum's potential ability to enhance body composition (16:52) Focusing on the benefits of Bovine Colostrum for recovery from training   (18:51) Discussing the effects of Bovine Colostrum on Digestive and Immune health  (29:44) Debating whether to use Bovine Colostrum Supplementation or not with a focus on: WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) recommendations Ethical factors to consider when choosing this supplement Some ethical Bovine Colostrum products currently on the market  (39:21) KEY TAKEAWAYS Bovine Colostrum is the first milk produced by cows following calving and is highly nutritious for the new born calf  It has been used in sport as a potential ergogenic aid for many years, however studies remain inconclusive regarding its direct benefits to sports performance It is thought that BC may improve body composition and increase power and strength in resistance training as well as support recovery and immune function, so potentially supporting performance directly and indirectly. Remember if you are vegan (maybe for some vegetarians too) then this is NOT a product for you as all forms of colostrum are derived from animals. BC is NOT recommended by WADA (although not banned!!) due to its IGF-1 content so, if you compete regularly at a reasonably high level e.g. county, regional, national level then be mindful of its use There are many products available to purchase, however ethical products are scarcer, so be discerning when making your choices if you decide to use this product. Finally, if you are uncertain whether this is the correct supplement for you, remember there are many other milk-based products that could provide similar performance results e.g. milk, whey, casein products FINAL WORD - Approach this supplement with caution because there are many other milk and dairy based foods and supplements available that may be sufficient for you as a runner to support your performance.  Relate Topics: https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/endurance-running-and-immune-system (Endurance Running and Immune system) https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/runners-gut (Runner's Gut) https://she-runs-eats-performs.captivate.fm/episode/protein-powders-do-runners-need-them (Protein Powders: Do Runners Need Them?) Today's guest is Karen Campbell, minister and musician, originally from Northern Ireland and currently based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Karen and I met first when we were both serving Presbyterian churches in the Belfast area, but our friendship has extended into our shared love of music, the Psalms, and spirituality – as well as some fun times and good laughs along the way. Here, Karen shares about her connections with the Psalms throughout her life, leading up to the creation of an album she and her husband David put together during the pandemic period of 2020. I'm grateful to the Campbell family for the music in today's episode - their son Ian's voice features in the opening song, followed by David's voice as well as other musicians from the Church of the Servant with whom they recorded this beautiful and uplifting album. In our conversation, we look at how exploring the psalms through music, art, and honest reflection helped her congregation uncover deep grace in the midst of the pains, laments, and hurts that came to the surface in a turbulent year, and how that process has led them to hear the voices on the margins in a clearer way. Check show notes to see photos of some of the artwork that came out of those sacred times of gathering around the Psalms. Before becoming a pastor, she worked for 3 years in Nairobi, Kenya teaching music and worship at Daystar University. She has worked in both rural and city settings, but longs for people to become fully mature, spirit-filled worshippers and followers of Jesus who unite together in being kingdom influencers in the world. Karen came to be co-pastor at Church of the Servant in 2018. Karen is passionate about fulfilling Church of the Servant's mission statement: to enable a fellowship where the burdened and suffering will find support and comfort, where the alienated will be accepted, and where those seeking God will be shown the way. What is Providence? From the Oxford Dictionary. 1 The protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power. ‘They found their trust in divine providence to be a source of comfort.' Synonyms: fate, destiny, nemesis, kismet, God's will, divine intervention, predestination, predetermination. 1.1 God or nature as providing protective care. ‘I live out my life as Providence decrees.' 2 Timely preparation for future eventualities. ‘It was considered a duty to encourage providence.' Synonyms: prudence, foresight, forethought, far-sightedness, judgement, judiciousness, shrewdness, circumspection, wisdom, sagacity, common sense, precaution, caution, care, carefulness Conflict, Friendship, Protection, Forgiveness, and Confrontation: Brianna reacts to the news Lord John bring about Bonnet's arrest. Brianna needs to move forward into freedom through forgiveness. Lord John is protective... “I'm not sure that means taking afternoon tea with a murderer.” Brianna misses her mother and experiences unexpected emotions when arriving in town. Lord John offers support. Brianna talks to Bonnet…alone. With Lord John waiting protectively. When she speaks to Bonnet, he gets a rise out of her.   Purpose and Friendship: Fergus and the other Regulators refuse to let Murtagh stay in jail and be sentenced to hang. Marsali supports the plan to break Murtagh from jail. They wish Claire and Jamie were there to help because they would find a way. While Lord John and Brianna are in the jail, Fergus and friends put the breakout plan into action. Marsali and Fergus are going to the Ridge. The boys make to break Murtagh out of jail and run into LJG and Brianna during the escape. With the baby in a basket and all their goods in a wagon, Marsali provides the getaway vehicle. Biding Time, Kindness, Reflection, Conflict, and Sacrificial Love Roger's put to work as a camp slave even though his arm is injured. He encounters a young mother, Johiehon, who offers Roger medicinal help to help with the pain of his injured arm. Kahereton is jealous and worried about Roger. Roger unwittingly breaks a cultural rule and is put in a hut. Roger is questioned why he was sold by his people. Roger meets Pere Alexandre Ferigault in the hut. Love is the common denominator between Roger and Alexandre. The priest tells his story and why he's prepared to die. Roger tells his story and why he is an idiot. Roger digs his way out of the hut and to the screaming of Pere he runs away. Roger tries to talk himself out of going back to help Pere. He cannot do it. Calls himself a stupid fool. He runs back to the village. Roger returns to the village and hastens the priest's death. Johiehon walks into the flame to join her lover. Kahereton is devastated and picks up the baby. Roger is stunned by the turn of events, then is hauled away. “That's it, lads, take me back to the idiot hut.” Freedom Brianna finds of mind and body freedom through forgiving Bonnet. Pere Ferigault and his lover find freedom in death. Murtagh gains his freedom by the acts of his friends, including an unlikely ally Bonnet is a cat with nine lives and presumably escaped before the prison blew up. Though still a captive, Roger finds freedom in confronting his own emotions and thoughts and doing the right thing. I CANNOT wait until the finale. See you on the flip side. Uncharted 311 Written for television by: Karen Campbell and Sharon Goss Directed by: Charlotte Brändström As always, my initial thoughts and links of interest are below. You'll need to click and listen to the podcast to hear my full and thoughtful commentary. Enjoy! I did. Starz Synopsis: After making a leap of faith, Claire washes up on a seemingly deserted island where survival is her only option. Navigating treacherous waters has crippled the Artemis, so Jamie devises a joyful moment for his crew in the midst of devastating setbacks. My Summary: Claire washes ashore after jumping overboard. After her clothes dry, she walks, and walks, and walks. She sleeps until fire ants wake her. She walks some more, she sleeps, a giant snake wakes her. She walks and passes out near a home in the jungle. She's wakes tied to a bed. An angry woman gives her water. She sleeps. She wakes to meet a priest, who unties her. She's told she cannot travel yet. Mamacita (angry woman) sends her to bathe. They have a meal. The priest is defrocked and Mamacita is his mother-in-law. His wife is dead. The Artemis is dead in the water, some of the crew are dead. Jamie and others are mending the mast. A roasted Arabella gives Claire hope. She runs through the jungle toward the beach. She injures her arm. She sees the Artemis about to set sail. The mirror she stole attracts attention. Jamie comes to shore for her. Yi Tien Cho sutures her arm while Jamie drinks wine. A small peace is made between Claire and Marsali. There's a beach wedding. Fergus is formally adopted by Jamie. Claire eats turtle soup while fevered. Injects self with penicillin. Drunk on soup she won't take no for an answer. Yi Tien Cho is pleased at the soup's after effects. What happened: Oh, I love turtles. Aha, foreshadowing. She really can sleep anywhere. Watch out for the wave… Swim Claire swim. You can do it. How fortunate her pack of clothing made it to shore before her. Now I want an umbrella drink and a chaise lounge. Where's Waldo? More umbrella drinks por favor. The Rule of Threes for Survival is a real thing. She walks. The most delicious leaf water of all time. I predict fair Claire is getting sunburnt. Anyone else wish she had Samwise with her? And she walks. FLINT oh yes. Buh bye bum roll. She'd totally win the Survivor fire challenge. Claire's mellow is harshed. Adrenaline and pain will wake you up. Freaking A fire ants! And she walks. Please someone hand her an Eos. JHRC spoiled coconuts. One does not simply go to Mordor. And she sleeps. Claire's mellow is harshed again. This time a big ass snake. It's not safe to be awake, it's not safe to sleep. Damn this island. And she walks. I hope she gets there to return the precious. Crocodile bones. Hm. Could this mean something? She hears and sees a man, and promptly says, “I can't even,” and passes out. Hey angry woman she needs to sit up to drink. Did this just take a Misery turn? Salve on her legs and tied to keep from scratching. Uh oh, the devil's zipper. Claire wakes to a man and a dog. Father Fogden of Hacienda de la Fuente. Water does a body good. “I'm a doctor, not a saint.” It's a miracle. Baby goat in the house. San Domingue, Haiti. Well, hey, hey Coco. Or rather cuckoo for coconuts. So, who is this Ermenegilda? Angry woman = Mamacita. Cow? It's better than being called a whore for a change. A warm bath. Heavenly. Except for the ram skull watching over her. Baby goats are so cute. Does the food taste of anger and resentment? Relationship status – It's complicated. Relationship status – widowed. No sangria to full cups of sangria that no one poured. Mamacita is full of side eye. He got weed! Yupa doesn't exist. Mamacita needs some weed. So now she's a whore Mamacita. Claire the thief. Poor lovesick and grieving Father. Dude, this is my story. Hit the road Jack. Claire speaks the language of Coco. Arabella is in their bellies. That's some freaky sh*t right there Padre. Abandawe, you say? Bloody hell the woman did see. Chinaman? Run, Claire, run. The Artemis is undergoing repairs. Raines, Warren, and Murphy are dead. HayLie are no AngPurt. How handy one of the men can man the helm. Claire runs. Hurry Claire. They did a right quick job of the repairs. She made it to the beach bleeding and with the mirror. Ah Uncle Lamb's training no doubt. I-spy with my spyglass, Sassenach. Settle down T-Rex, she cannae hear you. Is this a kissing book Grandpa? Yi Tien Cho to the suture rescue. Claire spills. Nice job Yi Tien Cho. A wedding is planned. Please take this fowl for my ignorance. “There was a time when I was a stranger in a strange land.” Forgiveness and weed. A sign of kindness between Marsali and Claire. I want to enjoy the secks like you and daddy. (Even if you are a hoor Mother Claire) “He's missing a hand.” “Not as though he's lost his cock.” “If ye'd hurry up and get on wi' it, I could find out.” “You have a name too? And a cock? I cannot marry you without it, it's not allowed.” Fergus Claudel Fraser. The adoption only took 20 years. AWWWWW sniff. Who doesn't love a wedding? A beach wedding Laoghaire would lose her mind over. Claire and Jamie get to share a cabin finally. Claire is chowing down some soup. Fevered and drunk. Bring on the penicillin. Those damn tropical germs. Come on big man, just stab her wi' it. I think that's her thigh. Claire is randy. Turtle soup is an aphrodisiac. It's been a while for the nipple eye stare. “You can't get drunk on turtle soup.” “You can't be drunk if you're standing up.” “This must be what it's like making love in hell. With a burning she-devil.” “Honorable wife, she enjoyed the turtle soup.” Go away Yi Tien Cho. If the cabin is rocking…. Yi Tien Cho and the duo are most satisfied with the outcome. It's good to see stable Jamie back in fine form. Claire is strong and able without being overwrought. Yi Tien Cho is honorable and dependable. Finally, Fergus and Marsali (FergAli) are married. For Book Readers: Seamless changes to make it fit this week. Finally, a Jamie who looks familiar. What's Coming up? Episode 312 The Bakra The Artemis finally reaches Jamaica bringing Jamie and Claire that much closer to their goal. During a lavish ball on the island, the Frasers encounter old allies, as well as former adversaries who threaten to derail their mission. Bakra means slave master and is also a goat. This time I was joined by writer, tutor, campaigner, ex-cop & more than I can put here, Karen Campbell. We talked about a recent statistic showing that a much higher percentage of women in Scotland, as compared to England are likely to vote. Why would that be so?Also, we talked about the broader situation and why Scotland is not "going back in the box".
