This past year was another stellar year for the podcast. I aired 260 episodes, mainly interviews with famous and amazing musicians and other creatives, but also Special Episodes featuring my new musical works, tribute episodes, and Encore episodes.As I've done in the past, I've put together a Highlights Show featuring some of the best excerpts from ten of the episodes. Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the greatest stars of Broadway, Television, concerts and recording. Among her many other accomplishments she wrote and sang the theme song to “The Nanny” TV show. She talks about getting that assignment.   Michael Shrieve was the longtime drummer for Santana, one of the greatest bands of the modern era. They were one of the biggest stars of Woodstock, and Michael's drum solo in “Soul Sacrifice” literally stole the show. He talks about the rumor that the band was high on psychedelics during that memorable performance.   Arturo Sandoval is one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time. He grew up in Cuba and had to defect to come to the U.S. He talks about how Dizzy Gillespie was instrumental in getting him and his bandmates out of Cuba and their first gig in the U.S.   Jeffrey Biegel is an acclaimed Grammy winning concert pianist. He's a good friend of Neil Sedaka, the legendary pop star and composer. He tells the story about how Neil informed his piano teacher at Juilliard about his first pop hit.   Dave Eggar is a 5x Grammy nominated rock star cellist who played on Coldplay's massive hit, “Viva La Vida”. He tells the story about meeting Chris Martin of Coldplay for the first time.   Giora Schmidt is a virtuoso American-Israeli violinist. He tells the story of what happened when he flew on a commuter plane and there was no room in the overhead for his very expensive concert violin.   Ivor Davis is a renowned journalist, investigative reporter and author. He tells what it was like to travel with and cover The Beatles on their 1964 tour of America.   Benny Benack III is a spectacular young trumpet player and vocalist who has performed all over the world. He tells about playing wedding gigs when he was first starting out.   Lucy Kaplansky is a folk music star and singer-songwriter. She talks about her loyal fans and their demographic.   Billy Cobham is one of the greatest drummers of the modern era. He played in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, one of the most heralded bands of the jazz fusion era. He talks about the band's first gig.   So that's it. Our 2025 Highlights Show. Featuring the first recordings by John, Paul, George and Ringo, recorded “live” in Hamburg, Germany in 1962. My guest today is Nigel Pearce, Beatles expert, who previously was a guest on this podcast. The songs you will hear were recorded over the last four nights of their final run in Hamburg at The Star Club. The recordings were made on an amateur tape recorder with one microphone. The tapes were lost for many years, but after they were found the tracks were enhanced using modern technology. They capture the band at a critical juncture, just before they returned to England and then exploded onto the world stage. Eric Jacobsen is a renowned cellist who is also the Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He is known for combining fresh interpretations of traditional works with cutting-edge collaborations across musical genres. If I've got this right he's also the Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Principal Guest Conductor of the Classical Tahoe Musical Festival. Eric is also the artistic director and co-founder of The Knights, an adventurous NYC-based chamber orchestra. Their current endeavors include a residency at Carnegie Hall. Her works have been performed by the London Symphony, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic among others. She won a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for her Trombone Concerto. Her debut album features the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and trombonist Peter Moore. Dani was Resident Artist with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Mitch Ryder is one of the most powerful and uncompromising voices in American rock and soul. Born William Levise Jr. in Detroit, Michigan, he came of age in a city buzzing with rhythm and blues, gospel and early rock 'n' roll. That musical melting pot shaped Ryder's unmistakable vocal style — raw, passionate and emotionally charged — setting him apart from his peers from the very beginning.MItch burst onto the international scene in the mid-'60s as frontman of Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. Bill Graham and Sid Bernstein were two of the greatest and most important rock music promoters of the 1960s. Bill Graham had two legendary theaters, the Fillmore West in San Francisco and the Fillmore East in New York City. He introduced and cultivated so many of the major stars of the era including Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, and the Grateful Dead on the west coast, and Blood Sweat & Tears, the Allman Brothers and The Band on the east coast.Sid Bernstein was the promoter who was responsible for The Beatles performing at Shea Stadium in New York City in 1965. Will Healey is a pianist and composer who plays multiple genres of music including classical, jazz and hip hop. In 2023 he won the Leonard Bernstein Prize from the ASCAP Foundation. He has performed at venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His arranging credits include works for the New York Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. He is the artistic director and founder of ShoutHouse, a group of hip-hop, jazz, and classical musicians. As a pianist, he has performed solo recitals in the United States and abroad. He also plays piano and synthesizers in the Pathos Trio, an award-winning metal-influenced chamber group. Full Text of Readings [DAY TITLE] The Saint of the day is Mary, Mother of God The Story of Mary, Mother of God Mary's divine motherhood broadens the Christmas spotlight. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God's invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38). Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43, emphasis added). Mary's role as mother of God places her in a unique position in God's redemptive plan. Without naming Mary, Paul asserts that “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Paul's further statement that “God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father!'” helps us realize that Mary is mother to all the brothers and sisters of Jesus. Some theologians also insist that her motherhood of Jesus is an important element in God's creative plan. God's “first” thought in creating was Jesus. Jesus, the incarnate Word, is the one who could give God perfect love and worship on behalf of all creation. As Jesus was “first” in God's mind, Our Lady was “second” insofar as she was chosen from all eternity to be his mother. The precise title “Mother of God” goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek form Theotokos (God-bearer), it became the touchstone of the Church's teaching about the Incarnation. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the holy Fathers were right in calling the holy virgin Theotokos. At the end of this particular session, crowds of people marched through the street shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!” The tradition reaches to our own day. In its chapter on Mary's role in the Church, Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church calls her “Mother of God” 12 times. To learn more, visit our Seven Days with Mary page.
