Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Jamie Tate, a Grammy and Emmy Award-winning recording engineer, mixer, producer, and the owner of The Rukkus Room in Nashville, TN. Jamie's career in the studio world began as an intern at The Sanctuary Recording Studios, where he worked his way up to chief engineer. After The Sanctuary sold, Jamie honed his craft while working around the clock at Abtrax Recording Studios. By 2004, with 18 months of clients already booked, he took the leap and founded The Rukkus Room, which has since become one of Nashville's most iconic recording spaces. The Rukkus Room was designed by Gene Lawson of Lawson Microphones and is one of the last remaining purpose-built recording studios in Nashville. Spanning 8,000 square feet across two separate buildings, it offers unparalleled isolation for recording. Shortly after opening, Jamie recorded Jack Ingram's #1 single “Wherever You Are” and several other top-five hits, cementing the studio's reputation as a go-to destination for legendary and up-and-coming artists alike. Jamie has mixed and recorded music for a stunning array of artists, including Thomas Rhett, Taylor Swift, Dustin Lynch, Jerrod Niemann, Maddie & Tae, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Miranda Lambert, John Prine, Rhett Akins, Sheryl Crow, Brooks and Dunn, and many more. His work has been featured on platinum-selling records, chart-topping singles, and critically acclaimed projects across genres. Our guest on Stories Behind the Songs this week is Will Bundy! From a small town near Bristol, TN, Will has such a cool story that was so much fun to get into. We dive deep into his journey from mowing lawns and farming to producing demos that landed him in writing rooms with some of Nashville's biggest names right now like Riley Green, Thomas Rhett, and Ella Langley, as well as hit songwriters like Brett James, Forest Whitehead, and Ashley Gorley. In this episode, you'll hear about how he hustled to learn demo production when he couldn't afford to hire anyone, carving out his niche in the industry as a “track guy”, his bold decision to rent out a studio on Music Row while living in Antioch, and writing his recent cut with Brad Paisley, “Truck Still Works”. He also shares stories about going on the road with Thomas Rhett and Rhett Akins and how that led to one of his career-defining songs, “Half of Me”. With recent cuts for both Luke Bryan and Brad Paisley, PLUS producing the viral hit “you look like you love me” by Ella Langley, Will Bundy is a great example of how hard work, strong relationships, and sticking with it truly pays off. Make sure to watch to the full episode for some invaluable advice to young songwriters, and a performance of his hit with Thomas Rhett and Riley Green, "Half of Me”. If you liked this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It is our mission to bring you the Stories Behind the Songs from the songwriters themselves and it's because of YOU that we get to keep going. After celebrating 20 #1's on Country radio, Thomas Rhett knows a thing or two about success. While up and coming artists are eager to hear his advice, Thomas says he still relies on some of his biggest role models in the music industry for theirs. During a recent conversation with KSON's John & Tammy: San Diego's Morning Show, Rhett revealed, besides his father — 90's icon, Rhett Akins — he relies on fellow Country singer, Luke Bryan for mentorship surrounding music, life as a musician and family. “I talked to Luke Bryan a ton in my early [career]. I still talk to Luke quite a bit,” he said before sharing there's no topic that's off the table for them. “I've talked to Luke about my voice, I've talked to Luke about my marriage, about how to raise kids. He's always been somebody who is like, not your father, but an unbiased opinion — Luke has kinda been that guy for me.” Detailing their friendship, Thomas shared he looks up to Luke for a lot of reasons, one of those being the amount of life experience he's had — good and bad. “Luke's been through the wringer — he's adopted several of his sibling's kids and experienced a lot of trauma in his life and in his career and I feel like he is somebody that has come through the other side of it victorious,” he shared. Knowing the importance of a good mentor, Rhett says he is always honored when younger musicians come to him for advice and takes the role of being a mentor very seriously. “I love it,” Thomas said of offering advice to those who seek it. “To have those kids kind of look up to me as sort of their advice-giver sometimes — that's been really cool. And it's something I don't take lightly.” On the topic off his success, Rhett was also asked if he'd ever consider selling his songs. “They can go,” Thomas said without hesitation. “I'm proud of them, but at the end of the day, when I'm like 60 years old and someone wants to maybe buy/have the rights to the songs — that would be gigantic.” He continued, “I would keep portions of songs, for sure, especially songs that I feel were very life-changing for my career. In hindsight, I'd probably sell half and I would leave the other half to my kids like in the will or whatever.” Hear more about Thomas' thoughts surrounding his music, mentorship, and why he chooses to participate in cryotherapy by listening to his full conversation with John & Tammy above. Thomas Rhett Akins Jr. was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on March 30, 1990. Rhett's father is renowned singer-songwriter Rhett Akins. In a 2013 interview, Rhett explained why he doesn't use his father's last name, saying, "I didn't leave Akins out to convince people my dad wasn't my dad. I've always been called Thomas Rhett. I didn't want to get rid of it."Rhett and his father have written songs together and their "Star of the Show" reached No. 1 in 2017. Akins was also one of the co-writers on "It Goes Like This," which in 2013 became Rhett's first No. 1 song. "Drink a Little Beer," from the album Life Changes, features Akins on the track.

A simple and obvious observation - the truck I am observing is not mine - turns into a brilliant song about loss and perhaps a metaphor for the one thing you can't directly discuss in country music if your name isn't Conway Twitty (the nasty). Rhett Akins 1995 hit "That Ain't My Truck" is a simple but beautiful tale of a woman picking the other man. Heart breaking, funny, catchy - it's a great song y'all. Learn more about your ad choices. Matt's back in town to cover a special concert Matt Bailey is back in Nashville a month after we covered the 2022 CMT Music Awards. This time, he's in attendance of a Music Memorial for Jeff Carson, who passed away from a heart attack in March at the age of 58. Michael Ray, Wade Hayes, Ty Herndon, Lee Greenwood, Heath Wright of Ricochet, Craig Campbell, Rhett Akins, Tracy Lawrence, John Berry, Halfway to Hazard, Danielle Peck, T. Graham Brown and War Hippies performed at the Nashville Palace. Don McLean made a surprise appearance to perform "American Pie." After retiring from country music in the mid 2000's, Carson pursued his other lifelong dream and joined the Franklin Police Department where he remained a dedicated officer until his untimely passing. Carson had begin to revive his music career as he was working on new music at the time of his death. Last year, Carson spoke with us about his latest single, "God Save The World," which we premiered the video digitally in early 2021. The concert was a charity event to benefit the Law Enforcement Assistance Partnership (LEAP), a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to sworn officers of the FPD during unexpected life events. Matt chatted with Ray, Herndon, Greenwood, Wright, Lawrence, Berry, Peck, Brown, and McLean on the red carpet. Before the interviews, Matt and I discuss other aspects of our joint trip in April 2022. We had the honor to cover the Grand Ole Opry our first night in town which included performances by Sara Evans, Tenille Townes, Riders in the Sky and Nate Smith making his Opry debut. Our last day in town included an afternoon ride on the world famous General Jackson showboat where we enjoyed a concert from the Tennessee Legends, where some of Nashville's finest musicians and singers shared the stories and songs from the pride of Tennessee. Walker Montgomery, chosen as an Artist to Watch in 2022 by Country Now and Music Mayhem Magazine; as well as Artist to Watch in 2021 by Sounds Like Nashville and The Boot and a Country Next pick by Country Now, is a rising singer/songwriter who knows a thing or two about family tradition, but he's an artist making his own legacy. The 21-year-old son of John Michael Montgomery and nephew of Montgomery Gentry's Eddie Montgomery, the emerging star was raised away from the spotlight in Nicholasville, Kentucky. But now that he's found that spotlight on his own, Montgomery's pedigree is matched only by his country passion. Signed to Play It Again Entertainment and produced by the multi-award-winning chart-topping team known to the world as The Peach Pickers – Dallas Davidson; Ben Hayslip; and Rhett Akins (who have nearly 80 No. 1 songs between them)– he's already put his classically-inspired, honey-bourbon vocal to use on a self-penned hit debut (“Simple Town,” over 4 Million Spotify streams).--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/backporchsippinpod/support

The song came out of a remark about his now-fiancée, Hallie Ray Light, and found it's way onto his tour bus, where he wrote about it. Eventually it ended in a songwriting session with Rhett Akins. I talked to Parker about about the song, the video, his tour with Dierks Bentley, that sadly had to be cancelled at the Xfinity Center due to Covid-19 within the band. Parker is a big Houston Astros fan, so was recently at Fenway for a game. Btw, this Texas boy is a big fan of Boston, for real! Of course, there's a game. Get to know Parker better by listening to his answers on a game I call, "Parker the Remarker."

From his early days of writing and drumming in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to being crowned Songwriter of the Century by ASCAP, he has indeed created for himself a monumental platform in the history of country music. As the writer of songs including Brooks and Dunn's “Believe” to Blake Shelton's “Boys ‘Round Here”, Wiseman has amassed over 350 cuts, 125 singles, and 27 #1's. After moving to Nashville in 1985 to pursue a career in songwriting, he received his first chart success after having co-written “The Only One” from Roy Orbison's album, Mystery Girl. In 1990, Wiseman signed his first publishing deal with Almo/Irving Music, and ten years later, he signed with BMG Music Publishing. In 2003, Wiseman opened his own publishing company, and within the first year of the independent company's operation, Wiseman experienced the first single of the catalog; “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw not only peaked at the top of the charts for ten weeks, but it also was named NSAI Song of the Year, CMA Song of the Year, ACM Song of the Year and won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. In 2012, Wiseman co-founded Big Loud's management division, the launchpad of Florida Georgia Line, followed by Big Loud Records in 2015. Wiseman's success has continued to escalate at exponential levels throughout the years. He was proclaimed ASCAP's “Songwriter of the Year” in 2003, 2005, and 2007 in addition to being named “Writer of the Year” by NSAI and Music Row in 1997. In 2009, he received the impressive honor of NSAI's “Songwriter of the Decade” and won the 2014 Heritage Award from ASCAP as the most performed country songwriter of the century. Following those years of success, hard work & accomplishments, Wiseman was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October of 2015. In 2017, Wiseman was honored with a CMA Triple Play Award for FGL's “Anything Goes” & Blake Shelton's “Gonna” & “Came Here To Forget.” Although his accomplishments are nothing less than extraordinary, Wiseman's talents and endeavors extend far beyond the field of songwriting. As a complement to Tim McGraw's “Live Like You Were Dying”, Wiseman co-wrote a book with the same title, which topped the New York Times Best Seller list in 2004. Additionally, he co-wrote the book A Baby Changes Everything in 2008, in conjunction with Faith Hill's #1 single. The following year, Wiseman starred in a reality TV show, The Hitmen of Music Row, which aired on GAC. For the past 15 years, Wiseman has hosted The Stars of Second Harvest Show at the Ryman, showing his philanthropic heart and giving all proceeds to the Second Harvest Food Bank Of Middle Tennessee. To date, this musical event has raised more than $1.5 million for the food bank. How did people get started in the industry before platforms like The Voice and American Idol? For many, their breaks came by producing and circulating demos of the songs they'd written. The big goal? Become a recording artist. The short-term goal? Have someone else record their songs and start making a name for themselves. This is exactly what happened for hit country songwriter and recording artist Rhett Akins. After dropping out of college and spending time working at his father's oil and gas company, he started creating demos and submitting them to the big companies. One of those demos led him to record his own album and he has since spent the last 25 years helping to change the world of country music. He's had numerous number one hits and has hit the triple threat charts multiple times. His work is truly prolific and it all started with him and his brothers creating a “band” in their bedroom. Rhett has a love of music that has pushed him through good and bad times in the industry and it will sustain him as we move into a new era of writing and recording. Listen as he and Andy discuss his early days in the industry, the motivation behind his songs, and one of the biggest downfalls of the industry. Rhett is extremely open about his experiences and even takes the time to sing one of his favorite songs. This is one interview you won't want to miss if you're craving that down-to-Earth soulfulness and vibe from the artists you love. Growing up as the son of Rhett Akins, who had a successful country music artist career in the 90’s, Thomas Rhett spent a lot of time around other country stars as a kid. One of his most memorable Halloweens, for example, happened at Reba McEntire's home where the icon actually put him in "time out." Thomas explains:
We had the pleasure of interviewing Manny Blu over Zoom audio! Country recording artist, Manny Blu will release a new EP, titled New Ink, on November 13, 2020. Manny’s debut single off the record, "Born To Ride," is now available and perfectly lays the groundwork for what is to come.Bringing to life a completely different side of the Montreal native, New Ink speaks directly to what Manny himself calls the "true heart" of the band's live shows: "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun."With his amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude, Manny brings his rebellious outlaw vibe to country music, creating an original sound that makes room for his blues and rock upbringing. While influenced by Brantley Gilbert, The Cadillac Three, and Jason Aldean, each of the five tracks heard on New Ink live in an edgy new space with rock-based instrumentals at the forefront. Recorded at OmniSound Studios in Nashville and produced by Aaron Eshuis, its rock-forward approach is fitting since the title stems from one of Manny's favorite bands, Mötley Crüe, and their album New Tattoo. One look at Manny, and it's no secret that he's a fan of tattoos-but to him New Ink means more than just thinking about the next one, for him, it's the release of his inner creative expression and his new sound to the world. The first single off of New Ink, "Born To Ride," is a track about finding that 'ride or die' person who will have your back as much as you have theirs—written by top songwriters Rhett Akins, Ross Copperman, and Josh Osborne, the track debuts today with a lyric video that provides a snapshot of Manny's acclaimed live shows.Consisting of four additional tracks telling the stories of real-life through love and heartbreak, Manny's upcoming EP displays substantial growth. Not only has 2020 already been a landmark year when it comes to streaming for the up-and-coming artist, it has also led to the development of global expansion with the addition of teams in the US, Canada, and the UK."Music is one of the most powerful elements to someone's life," said Manny when talking of the story behind the EP. "I think it can make what someone is going through ok, it can motivate, and empower people–so I tried to add a little piece of each of those things into New Ink."Manny continues to bring his vibe to country music–a sound he introduced with Leave It Like It Is, his debut record (2019) that earned him thousands of new fans and presented him with the opportunity to hit the road across Canada and the US. Last spring, Manny spent two months crossing Canada while opening for George Canyon's "Hit After Hit Tour" and then headlined his Canadian tour to close out the year. Earlier this spring, Manny crossed the US and Canada on another headlining tour. Fans can expect new show announcements in the coming months.ABOUT MANNY BLU:Manny Blu has always been a fighter. Years before he crisscrossed North America as an acclaimed country singer and a true road warrior-playing nightly shows in support of his 2019 debut album Leave It Like It Is, while also sharpening the larger-than-life sound that would fill his 2020 follow-up EP New Ink, Manny spent his days in the gym, training for a career as an MMA fighter.Traveling often to Nashville from his hometown of Montreal, he began piecing together a new record–one that showcased the lessons he learned on the road. Working with producer Aaron Eshuis and hit songwriters like Josh Osborne, Rhett Atkins, and Ross Copperman, Manny Blu emerged from Nashville's OmniSound Studios with New Ink. From "Born To Ride" to "Sink," these new songs tell relatable stories about love, loss, breakups, and everything in between, rooted in an amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude."I wanted the album to sound the way we do live," says Manny. "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun."Raised as a versatile athlete who played hockey, soccer, and football before kickstarting his MMA training at 16-years-old, Manny Blu hasn't lost that fighting spirit. If anything, he's gotten stronger, learning to roll with the punches and knock down any obstacles in his path. New Ink, with its hard-hitting hooks and country-rock edge, is the soundtrack to a career on the rise–and Manny Blu is ready to deliver a knockout blow. New Ink will be available on November 13, 2020.We want to hear from you! Sykamore’s songwriting is equal parts country and pop, mixing intimate reflection and empathetic storytelling with instantly memorable hooks and sing-along choruses that capture the emotional rollercoaster of youth and young love. Her arrangements are eclectic and infectious to match, drawing on everything from George Strait to George Michael with performances that practically beg you to hit the highway with the volume up and the windows down. The result is an infectious collection all about honesty and vulnerability, about the strength and freedom we can unlock by embracing our truest selves, delivered by an artist who’s learned everything she knows from a lifetime of listening. The Daughter of two rodeo diehards from stampede country Canada, it only makes sense that Sykamore’s passion and fire would burst out of the badlands as it lead her to many opportunities, like being nominated for the prestigious CCMA Discovery Award in 2015 to eventually moving to Nashville and releasing her first EP in 2017. The connection that led there, a twitter conversation with songwriting heavyweight Rhett Akins, who took an interest in her music and eventually began assisting her with the foundation she had already begun to build. Which leads us to today, in which Sykamore is now proud to release her 2nd EP California King, the first to feature the lessons and influences that her travels and experiences in Nashville have brought her, and what she feels is also the best representation of herself as an artist so far as she lets go of barriers and embraces other influences from her youth. Sykamore joins the DTP to discuss her journey to Nashville, how she has grown as an artist with her new EP California King, and tells us just exactly what a California King is.

Outlaws, renegades, peyote trips, and new music with one of the fathers of Outlaw Country, Chris Gantry. Chris takes us through his life with Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, hit songs, and peyote trips. Chris' latest project, Nashlantis is out now and available to stream everywhere. Chris Gantry is noted as being one of the founders of Outlaw Country. In a time where rhinestones and "flowers" were happening in country music. There was a crew of artists and writers that simply wanted to write about who they were. Hence the birth of Outlaw Country with notable writers like Chris; Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, etc. Originally from New York City and also working in the Brill Building, Chris made the journey to Nashville in the early 60's. A time of war, culture shifts, and even music shifts. In conversation, he mentions his first stop, who he met, and what the vibe of Nashville was like for the "outlaw" crew. We also tap into the accessibility of Nashville in the early recording days. Like walking in Chet Atkins office to learn a riff on the guitar. Not too much later Chris' struck gold when he had a major cut from Glen Cambell from his tune, "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife". Other notable cuts include Johnny Cash's "Allegheny", Rhett Akins, and "Good Friends" with Reba Mcintire. We walk through the history and climate of starting in the "outlaw" genre and his feelings toward music sounding the same. Even in today's radio country. Chris shares his outlook in writing (that includes a major award-winning play that he wrote). By staying fresh and always releasing material, it's obvious Chris is always moving forward. Nashlantis is no different. Continuing to push the limits for himself and experiencing the world around him. Nashlantis, is a look at Chris' state of mind and coming to terms where he is in life. Nashlantis is out now on all platforms and can be streamed and bought from www.dragcity.com

Hey there! I'm Kelly Sutton. We are so glad you’re here for another Inside Music Row! We’ve got plenty of entertainment news for you this week, so let’s get started! Even though Kenny Chesney is taking some time off, he’s still hard at work, now co-producing his 16th studio album. He’s working hard collecting great songs and pushing the boundaries without betraying his true self. You can see part of that in the new single “American Kids,” written by Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird, and Shane McAnally. Kenny says the song ‘just grabs you and holds on, but even more importantly…it feels really good.” Look for Kenny to hit the road again in 20-15 with tons of new material. Randy Houser recently helped open a new Operation Homefront Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He helped cut the ribbon for the facility, which helps wounded military service members and their families. Randy also performed for the group and visited with them before a special cookout. Thomas Rhett teamed up with his father Rhett Akins to support a charity in their hometown. Their performance together raised over 40-thousand dollars for Great Strides Valdosta in honor of their cousin Sophie, who has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Sammy Kershaw is honoring his late friend and mentor George Jones with the release of a new album dedicated entirely to the “Possum.” The project includes a total of fourteen tracks, including renditions of some of George’s biggest hits like “White Lightning” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Also included are two new tracks that were inspired by the legend, plus a special “Near You” duet with Georgette Jones. Look for “Do You Know Me? – A Tribute to George Jones” to hit stores July 22nd. Now it's time to go “Inside The Song.” John Oates met his songwriting match when he was teamed up with hit writer Craig Wiseman. John recently shared a fun story about how they wrote “Lose It In Louisiana” together, which is on his latest “Good Road To Follow” project.
Songwriters Ben Hayslip and Rhett Akins have tons of number one hits between the two of them, so when you add Jason Aldean to the mix…you’re almost guaranteed to have another big hit. “When She Says Baby” is the latest single written by Ben and Rhett that was picked up by Jason, and sure enough…it took the top spot on the charts in no time. We caught up with them at a party to celebrate that song’s success.
Georgia boy Billy Currington is enjoying his latest run of success. Since he signed his first label deal with Mercury Records just over ten years ago, he's put out five studio albums, charted eleven top forty hits, and celebrated seven number ones. We had achance to catch up with Billy and writers Ashley Gorley, Chris DeStefano, and Rhett Akins to celebrate the success of his latest number one "Hey Girl."
In our last segment, we featured the celebration for “Round Here” from Florida Georgia Line. This was a huge day for one of the writers of that song, Thomas Rhett, as he also was able to celebrate his very first number one as an artist. Here is more with Thomas and writers Ben Hayslip, Jimmy Robbins, and his dad Rhett Akins.
Justin Moore has a lot to celebrate these days. The Valory Records artist released his “Off The Beaten Path” album in September, and it didn’t take long for the lead single “Point At You” to take the top spot on the charts, propelling the album also to the top spot on the charts. We had a chance to catch up with Justin and “Point At You” songwriters Ross Copperman, Ben Hayslip and Rhett Akins at the popular Nashville nightspot The Stage to celebrate that song’s success.
Tyler Farr has gone "Redneck Crazy" with the release of his debut album. After moving to Music City from Missouri, he got a gig at Tootsie's downtown and worked his way to the stage. He soon began writing with Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson and Ben Hayslip, otherwise known as the Peach Pickers, and a publishing deal and record contract with Columbia Nashville soon followed. We had a chance to catch up with Tyler at a release party for that long-awaited album.

This is the first full studio album Tracy has put out in several years and will hit stores August 20th. Billy Currington is also releasing a new album on September 17th called "We Are Tonight." Rhett Akins has had a long distinguished career as a songwriter, earning plenty of number one hits and other accolades along the way. We had a chance to catch up with Rhett at a private party to hear about his journey through the music business. Here's Kelly with more.
Thomas Rhett is fairly new to the music charts, even though he's been in country music all his life through his father Rhett Akins. Now Thomas is making a name for himself on the Valory Music Company label. His debut album will hit stores late this Spring, but we had a chance to check in with him behind-the-scenes on the set of his latest music video.
The songwriting team of the Peach Pickers, which include Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, and Ben Hayslip, have earned numerous top hits together, writing songs for many of today's hottest artists. When you throw Luke Bryan into the mix, you might think they'll come away with a big time party song. However...the foursome instead came up with the heartfelt hit "I Don't Want This Night To End." We caught up with them at a party at Nashville's Cabana to celbrate the number one song.
You may be a little familiar with this next artist, as we've featured his father Rhett Akins many times as a writer of hit songs. Thomas Rhett is now signed as an artist to the Valory Music Company, and recently released his very first single to radio. We had an exclusive visit to the celebration launch and had a chance to talk to Thomas about his budding career.

Sykamore and Brendan talk about her early growth as an artist in Canada, how a trip to the CCMA Awards in 2015 forever changed her path, and how a private message on Twitter from Rhett Akins turned into a publishing deal and new opportunities in Nashville. Sykamore explains how navigating the pandemic as a new artist helped shape her recent music, the excitement she has in sharing her new album, and the unapologetic approach she takes in creating pop/inspired Country Music.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
