One of the things that caught our attention about Ian was his dedication to theatre and film. He's a talented maker of things, stage combat aficionado, cosplayer, science-fiction geek, and advises everyone to be okay with what makes you happy. He's Chinese by heritage but struggled, as many do, with his Asian roots growing up in a predominately white culture. A lot of what he went through goes into his work in the form of learning to not care about what people think, while at the same time caring about what people think. Sharbari Zohra Ahmed is a Bangladeshi-American writer and was on the writing team for the ABC show Quantico, making her the first woman of Bangladeshi origin to write for a network show.We talk about why she never thought she would get picked to walk into the writers' room for the show, why the show didn't focus on Priyanka Chopra's cultural background, the reason she was heavily trolled online for an episode she didn't write, why there is still a lack of diversity behind the scenes and how that affects stories revolved around minority families, and the reasons South Asians still have a hard time supporting one another when it comes to the arts.We discuss the reason her family fled from Bangladesh while she was just 3 weeks old, how that move shaped her life and inspired her creative journey, and why identity and a strong female protagonist has been a central theme in a lot of her writings. She discusses her debut novel, Dust Under Her Feet, and her current projects including Rickshaw Girl by Mitali Bose Perkins, which she adapted for the screen.

Kim's Convenience is a Canadian television sitcom that premiered on CBC Television in October 2016. It depicts the Korean Canadian Kim family that runs a convenience store in the Moss Park neighbourhood of Toronto: parents "Appa" (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and "Umma" (Jean Yoon) – Korean for dad and mom, respectively – along with their daughter Janet (Andrea Bang) and estranged son Jung (Simu Liu). Other characters include Jung's friend and coworker Kimchee (Andrew Phung) and his manager Shannon (Nicole Power). The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name. The show ran for five seasons, from October of 2016, and airing its final episode a couple of weeks ago on April 13, 2021, after the show was abruptly cancelled due to the series creators walking away before the show's ordered sixth and final season, prompting the network to end it rather than attempt to continue it without the creators. While we will miss the show and forever be angry that another one of our favorite shows was taken from us too soon, the #talkintv boys get together to honor and celebrate one of their favorite shows of the last couple of years. In this episode, they talk about the show's fifth and final season, the production problems that plagued it due to Covid, the cancellation and the absense of star Simu Liu, who was off filming Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel. In addition, they talk about what made the show so special; the growth of the characters over time and whether the finale, impromptu as it was, worked. It's all covered here on the #talkintvpodcast #kimsconvenience #kimsconvenienceseason5 #kimsconveniencereview #kimsconveniencefinalseason #kimsconvenienceshow #kimsconveniencecanadian #paulsunhyunglee #simuliu #andreabang #jeanyoo --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support

It's 4th of July! We talk weekend plans and bar haopping. And apparently MJ is a theatre nerd - Yes Jay is supposed to be the gay one. Kim's Convenience gets the Watch or Not treatment. And Jay is back to crowning Bae's of the Week.
We hit the beach for the Fourth of July weekend with Matt Taylor, JW Rinzler and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee to celebrate Jaws, the movie that changed everything! Matt Taylor is a 15th generation resident of Martha's Vineyard, where Jaws was filmed, and the author of Memories from Martha's Vineyard, the definitive book about the making of Jaws. JW Rinzler is the best-selling author of The Making of Star Wars, The Making of the Empire Strikes Back, The Making of Return of the Jedi, The Complete Making of Indiana Jones and more, as well as the upcoming All Up, a fictionalised history of the Space Age. He's also the author of The Jaws Blog, a detailed analysis of the film. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is the star of Kim's Convenience and a two-time Canadian Screen Awards winner. He's also a big-time geek who rates Jaws as his favourite film of all time. This week, this talented trio joins the show to dive deep into Jaws, and explain how it set the standard for all the blockbusters that would follow – including Star Wars. Matt even brings in a special guest who actually worked on the film to share his stories, and explain what it was like to be in the water with Jaws! Force Material is a podcast exploring the secrets and source material of Star Wars with hosts Rohan Williams and Baz McAlister. Calgary native Andrew Phung recently won his third Best Supporting Actor award for playing Kimchee on the CBC/Netflix comedy Kim's Convenience. The one year he didn't win? The series wasn't eligible! With at least two more seasons on order, the emcee and comedian may have to make more room on his trophy shelf. Phung talks about the thrill of seeing Canadian stories play worldwide; his Vietnamese heritage and why "Star Trek" still rocks.
Michael Musi from Netflix's "Kim's Convenience" joins host Elias on the podcast. We talk about him playing Terrance on the show, theater work, career, growing up in Canada & more.
