Viral comedian and school custodian Jimmy Cash joins Dopey to tell a funny, painful, and unmistakably Dopey recovery story. Jimmy grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, surrounded by addiction and Alcoholics Anonymous. His father—a high-school janitor—died from an overdose when Jimmy was nine, while his mother cycled through addiction, recovery, and relationships with other janitors. After watching The Basketball Diaries as a child, Jimmy became obsessed with getting high before he had even tried a real drug. By his teens, Jimmy was smoking weed, drinking, taking psychedelics, using cocaine and ketamine, getting arrested, and fighting with police. He recalls punching a cop who was kindly driving him home, attacking the weak knee of a college RA—or at least being accused of it—and causing a coked-out disaster at an IHOP that ended with him breaking the handle off a police car and being beaten in custody. Court-ordered AA eventually became genuine recovery. Jimmy got sober in 2003, built a family, became a custodian, and pursued his lifelong dream of stand-up comedy. His janitor videos went viral, leading to national attention and an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. But after more than 20 years without drinking or using, divorce, career pressure, grief, isolation, and insomnia left Jimmy sleeping on his younger sister's couch. He began “nibbling” cannabis edibles, quickly recognized that he was getting high, and made the humbling decision to return to AA and pick up a new 24-hour chip. Plus: a listener steals a car and escapes police through a freezing pond, questions about the experimental opioid compound SR-17018, a precipitated-withdrawal horror story, spicy reactions to the Roy Donk episode, drugged dogs, dead parrots, Phish fans, and DopeyCon business. All that and more on this weeks new MASS edition of Dopey!   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What might change in your school if students felt safe enough to say they were not okay? In this episode, Ashanti Branch shares how his own journey as a student, engineer, and educator led him to create the Ever Forward Club, a nonprofit dedicated to helping young men build connection, emotional awareness, character, and leadership skills. He explains why many students learn to hide behind masks, what it takes to earn trust, and how schools can create spaces where young people feel seen, heard, and supported. Ashanti also introduces the #MillionMaskMovement, a powerful activity that helps students and adults reflect on the parts of themselves they show to the world and the experiences they often keep hidden. From simple daily check-ins to proactive conversations about emotions and belonging, this episode offers practical ways educators and leaders can strengthen relationships, support regulation, and build a healthier campus culture. About Ashanti Branch Ashanti is a master in transforming schools into safer, more connected spaces through his workshops and a variety of products geared towards social-emotional learning. He is a pioneer in education reform and in youth mental health, with over 18 years of experience. He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club (EFC), a non- profit organization dedicated to addressing the dropout rates of marginalized students through youth mentorship and teacher professional development. A recipient of the 2023 US Surgeon General's Medallion (the highest honor a civilian can receive from the Surgeon General), Ashanti is a keynote speaker, a consultant on the youth mental health crisis, a Fulbright Fellow, and 4x Tedx Speaker. His work with youth as an ‘emotional locksmith' has been featured at SXSW, on CNN's This is Life with Lisa Ling, on the Kelly Clarkson Show, and in the documentary about American masculinity The Mask You Live In, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Formerly a math teacher and raised in Oakland by a single mom on welfare (his father died just before he was born), Ashanti found his passion while tutoring struggling students in a school with a majority African-American and Latino population. It broke his heart to see 40% of them wanting to drop out at such a young age. By fulfilling deeper emotional needs to feel safe, seen, and heard, EFC has helped 100% of its student members graduate high school, 90% enroll in higher education, and 0% become incarcerated (compared to the national incarceration rate of 8% for black males, age 20-24). Notable projects include EFC's Adventure Card Game which introduces youth to the world of their feelings, created by boiling down 18+ years of deep understanding working with thousands of youth. EFC's #millionmaskmovement (Anthem Award recipient) provides a free, youth-friendly, hands-on emotional tool, with an online gallery of over 75,000 masks from around the world, searchable by age, so youth feel less alone. EFC alumni are often the first to break generational patterns and go on to make healthier leaders, parents, and partners. Although EFC is based in California, it has now impacted schools globally, with thousands of alumni stating, "I can truly say Ever Forward Club saved my life." Ashanti's work is crucial as we are now at an unprecedented inflection point with youth, with this being the first generation in history expected to live shorter lives than their parents. Youth mental health has been identified as being in a state of emergency by the US Surgeon General. Please help Ashanti get the word out that help is available. Drawing on their extensive experience in education, Charle Peck and Joshua Stamper challenge outdated disciplinary practices and offer a clear, trauma-informed framework that empowers educators to interpret student behavior as a form of communication. Through three core tenets—Consider the Environment, Explore the Root Causes of Behavior, and Respond with Intentionality—this book equips leaders with actionable strategies to foster positive behavior, build stronger relationships, and cultivate a more supportive school climate. Packed with real-world case studies, evidence-based practices, and insights into the lasting effects of childhood trauma, The Language of Behavior provides school leaders with the tools to create lasting, meaningful change. It offers a roadmap to reduce behavior issues, re-engage students and staff, and establish a culture of accountability and empathy. Last weekend, Lollapalooza rolled into my front yard in Chicago, and in this Series, I'll be featuring the interviews I did with a handful of amazing artists playing this giant festival. For this Part 1, I was especially psyched to mark the occasion by first sitting down with my friend, the amazing and inspiring Goldie Boutilier, who's making her third appearance on the show.Since Goldie's last interview for Roadcase in December 2024, she has been absolutely crushing it and I couldn't be happier about her accomplishments. She was recently nominated for a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, made her TV debut on the Kelly Clarkson Show, opened for Katy Perry on the European leg of her World Tour late last year, and also had her song “King of Possibilities” featured as the theme song for the Netflix Series “The Hunting Wives.” These are major accomplishments by any measure, but when you understand Goldie's life story, her continual rise becomes even more impressive.Goldie talks to me about her constant evolution and transformation from a dreamer to a doer, the impact of being a role model for her fans, how owning her trauma and seeing herself in others has made her feel less alone, and we explore how her overcoming doubt and fear to conquer new challenges has made her even stronger. Goldie's inspiring story is one of survival, resilience, grit, determination and self-belief — and I'm proud to have her on the show once again!!  You can click on the link in the bio to find it. I had the great experience of sitting down with Jeralyn Glass, an internationally acclaimed opera star turned sound healing pioneer and author of Sacred Vibrations. Following the tragic loss of her son, Jeralyn transitioned from the stages of Broadway to the forefront of holistic medicine, discovering how crystalline sound can act as a powerful healing tool for the mind and body. From a scientific perspective, sound healing is rooted in the principles of entrainment and vibro-acoustics. Every organ and cell in the human body vibrates at a specific frequency; when we are stressed or ill, these frequencies can fall out of "tune."  Jeralyn explains how coherent sound waves can physically interact with the nervous system to shift brain states from active Beta waves to restorative Alpha and Theta patterns. This process measurably lowers cortisol, reduces blood pressure, and stimulates the vagus nerve, moving the body out of a "fight or flight" response and into a state of cellular repair. We dive into the science behind Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls and how specific vibrational frequencies can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and assist patients ranging from veterans to those in hospice care. Jeralyn—who has shared her expertise on The Kelly Clarkson Show and worked with icons like Jhené Aiko, SZA, Bruce Lipton, Greg Braiden and Kobe Bryant—shares how to treat your own body as a "vibrating instrument." Tune in to learn how to integrate "Music as Medicine" into your daily life through simple humming, movement, and intentional listening. If you listen to the end, in the audio podcast version, not the YouTube one, you will be able to enjoy Jeralyn's amazing voice in five musical pieces (One being a meditation) ————————————————————————————————————— Also, there is a small but important correction I wish to make. Talking about the power of music and how it is often divinely inspired, the story came to my mind of how Naomi Randall composed the beloved hymn, 'I am a child of God.' Thanks to my fashion design focused mind, I instead said it was Naomi Campbell, who is a great model but *not* the composer of this hymn, bless her.  For those who might be interested, here is how the hymn words came to the original Naomi: "That evening, I got down on my knees and prayed aloud, pleading that our Heavenly Father would let me know the right words. Around 2:00 A.M. I awakened and began to think again about the song. Words came to my mind. . . . I immediately got up and began to write the words down as they had come to me. Three verses and a chorus were soon formed. I gratefully surveyed the work, drank of the message of the words, and returned to my bedroom where I knelt before my Father in Heaven to say 'Thank you!'" (Source: https://www.ldsliving.com/the-powerful-stories-behind-i-am-a-child-of-god-i-need-thee-every-hour-3-other-beloved-hymns/s/88514_)  Copyright note: the copyright to "I Am a Child of God" is owned by Intellectual Reserve, Inc., a corporation established by the LDS Church to hold its intellectual property. Intellectual Reserve allows copying or downloading of the music and lyrics of the song for incidental, noncommercial church, or noncommercial home uses.   I also mentioned the Christmas Truce. During the recording, which is not scripted, I could not remember any details about it, as this idea came as we were talking. However, the Christmas Truce recounts the story of German and British soldiers who sung together Silent Night at Christmas. During the editing process, I found a Sainsbury's advert made with the Royal British Legion, which accurately describes how the scene unravelled. I dare you not to cry when you watch it and think of how the power of music brought these brave young men together that week. In some areas, men from both sides ventured into no man's land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs. There were joint burial ceremonies and prisoner swaps, while several meetings ended in carolling. Send us Fan MailRichard Hicks is the CEO and President of Inspiredu, a Georgia-based nonprofit dedicated to expanding digital access, strengthening families, and creating new opportunities for children and communities. A transformational nonprofit leader, speaker, and advocate for equity in technology, Richard has spent more than 15 years building programs, partnerships, and strategies that help families improve their socioeconomic mobility through digital literacy, access to devices, and community-centered support.Under Richard's leadership, Inspiredu has become a trusted force in Georgia's digital inclusion ecosystem. He has led high-performing teams, managed major projects, and developed growth and fundraising strategies that have secured more than 150 Fortune 500 sponsorships and partnerships in just two years. During Inspiredu's inaugural year, Richard and his team served more than 3,000 Georgia families during the pandemic, helping bridge urgent technology gaps at a time when access to devices and connectivity was essential for school, work, and daily life.Richard's path to Inspiredu grew from more than a decade of service with the national education nonprofit PowerMyLearning, where he served as executive director of the Atlanta region. While representing a national organization, he saw the need for deeper, locally focused work to support Georgia's minority and low-income families. That vision led him to assemble a strong local leadership team and launch Inspiredu as a spinoff nonprofit committed to continuing and expanding that mission. In the last year alone, the Inspiredu team distributed 2,297 devices to community members and diverted 5,824 laptops from Atlanta landfills in 2023, advancing both digital equity and environmental sustainability.Richard's commitment to service is also rooted in his personal history. He is the newest guardian of his family's roughly five-acre centennial property on Log Cabin Road in Milledgeville, Georgia, a preservation project entrusted to him by his late father, Samuel A. Hicks. The land reminds him of the hard work of his ancestors and keeps him grounded in the responsibility to create opportunities for future generations. Whether leading Inspiredu, serving on the Executive Advisory Board for Atlanta Technology Professionals and the Advisory Board for the Consort Institute at Clark Atlanta University, or volunteering with organizations such as the Agape Family and Youth Center, Richard brings a family- and community-first lens to his work.A respected voice in business leadership, technology, and nonprofit innovation, Richard frequently speaks on panels and has represented Inspiredu on national and regional platforms. He appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show as a finalist for the Good Neighbor of the Year Award, was featured on WSB Radio during Black History Month, participated as a panelist for GlobalMindED's Resolve to Solve conference on WABE's NPR, and was named “Man of the Year” at the Steminist Awards at Atlanta's Fox Theatre. Through every role, Richard remains focused on one clear goal: expanding access to technology and opportunity so Georgia families can thrive.Like what you heard? Replay: The Power of Joy with Keeya Wiki on the Klamath

The Discomfort Zone

What does it mean to paddle a river your family fought six generations to free? This week marks the one-year anniversary of the historic first descent of the undammed Klamath River by Indigenous youth in the Paddle Tribal Waters program. To honor it, Anna is replaying her conversation on The Discomfort Zone Podcast with Keeya Wiki, a Yurok kayaker who completed that first descent at 17. Keeya also belongs to the Te Aupouri and Ngati Porou tribes of Aotearoa (New Zealand), and her family has fought for generations for the health of the salmon, the river, and their right to fish. This conversation is about joy as resilience, and what happens when the healing of a river becomes the healing of the generations connected to it. If you love rivers and want to understand what dam removal and Indigenous-led restoration mean for the people who fought for it, this one is for you. In this episode, Keeya and Anna explore: What it felt like to paddle the Klamath after generations of advocacy for dam removal How Keeya listens to her body and grounds herself when fear and self-doubt show up The intense underwater moment on the river that tested her self-trust The power of community, mentorship, and representation in outdoor spaces Why the joy Keeya experienced on the river has the power to heal generations Since this conversation, Anna has read The Water Remembers by Amy Bowers Cordalis, Keeya's aunt and the lawyer who played a key role in getting the Klamath dams removed. Amy joins The Discomfort Zone Podcast later this summer, and you may have seen Amy and Keeya together on the Kelly Clarkson Show sharing their family's legacy. Consider this replay the first chapter of that story. Whether you paddle whitewater, care about river restoration, or simply want to hear what courage and joy sound like, listen now and let the Klamath's story move you.

The #1 Skill Men Aren't Taught That Destroys Relationships (ft. Therapist Eli Weinstein)

Why do men shut down — and what does it silently cost them in love, connection, and life? In this episode, I sit down with therapist Eli Weinstein to unpack the emotional avoidance pattern that's quietly destroying relationships — especially after kids arrive. We go deep on why men are conditioned to bottle emotions instead of expressing them, how resentment in marriage builds in silence, and the specific moment most couples disconnect without even realising it. Eli shares the brutal truth about the "honesty paradox" — why women ask for emotional openness in men, then punish them when they get it. We also dig into why therapy for men can sometimes make things worse when it's used as a shield instead of a tool for real change. If you're feeling distant from your partner, stuck in cycles of conflict, or you've noticed that having kids changed something you can't name — this conversation is for you. Eli Weinstein, LCSW, is the therapist bringing heart and humor back to mental health. A loving husband and proudly goofy dad of two, Eli is based in Las Vegas and runs a thriving practice serving clients across New York, Nevada, and beyond through his global coaching work. Known for his straight-talking, relatable style, he's the creator of ELIvation and host of The Dude Therapist podcast, where he dives into the messy, beautiful mix of relationships, parenting, and emotional growth. An international speaker and sought-after guest, Eli has been featured on over 250 podcasts and major media outlets including The Kelly Clarkson Show, Psychology Today, and leading relationship and parenting platforms. His debut book, From I Do to We Do: Navigating Marriage Through Parenting Years (Wiley, 2026), helps couples stay connected when life gets loud. In this episode of God-Led Business, you'll discover how imposter syndrome is not the enemy of your calling; it's actually the tool God is using to form you into the woman He created you to be, and how storytelling is the key to finally clarifying your message and communicating it with confidence. Christian podcaster, speaker, best-selling author, and TikTok influencer Melissa Hughes joins Stefanie Gass to talk about the real experience of feeling unqualified for your God-given calling and why that feeling might be the most important signal you've ever received. If you've ever wrestled with self-doubt as a Christian entrepreneur, wondered if your message is clear enough to attract clients, or wanted to become a better communicator without losing your faith in the process, this conversation was made for you. Melissa and Stefanie unpack how to navigate imposter syndrome as a Christian woman in business, why storytelling clarifies your niche and deepens your connection with your audience, and what to do when doubt gets loud and you want to give up on your calling. Melissa has been featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show, NBC, and has built a platform of over 250K followers on TikTok... and she still fights the same battles you do. Her honesty and wisdom will stay with you long after the episode ends. If you're a Christian woman entrepreneur looking to grow a podcast, build a God-led business without social media, find your message, or finally step into the calling that won't leave you alone, this episode is your permission slip. Glad You Asked
#89: Laura Fanucci - What's the point of prayer?

Glad You Asked

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2026 58:28

In the 6th chapter of Matthew's gospel, Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray, introducing what today we call the "Our Father," or the "Lord's Prayer." But Jesus imparts this prayer in the context of various instructions on the many ways we shouldn't pray. Don't pray in public for everyone to see. Don't put on a gloomy face. Then, in the following chapter, he says: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven." So Christians should pray. But Christians should also, it seems, be wary about praying the wrong way. This opens up intriguing questions about what it means to pray, whether there are things we should or shouldn't pray for, and what it means for a prayer to be answered.  On this episode of Glad You Asked, the hosts talk with award-winning writer Laura Kelly Fanucci about the point of prayer.  Fanucci is the author of a number of books, most recently Living Easter: 50 Days to Practice Resurrection Joy (Liturgical Press, 2026). She has written for U.S. Catholic as well as OSV News Service, America Magazine, and on two popular substacks. Her work has also been featured on the Hallow and Ritual apps, and in popular outlets including NPR's Morning Edition, On Being, and The Kelly Clarkson Show.  You can learn more about this topic, and read some of Fanucci's work, in these links. "Instead of being so put together, these songs say, 'I'm human. I can be insecure.' That's real freedom." In this episode of Jrodconcerts: The Podcast, Jamie Rodriguez sits down with acclaimed singer-songwriter Leah Blevins. Fresh off her national television debut on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Leah joins us to discuss her sophomore album, All Dressed Up—a masterclass in torch-pop country and soulful Americana produced by Dan Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound. Leah's journey from the small town of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, to the global stage is a testament to the power of staying true to one's own frequency. We explore the spiritual and philosophical foundations of her work, discussing how life's hardest challenges can eventually transform into creative gifts. In this episode, we explore: The Vulnerability Paradox: Navigating the balance of confidence and transparency as a solo artist. Creative Autonomy: The decision to pursue a solo career at 14 and refusing to fit into traditional genre boxes. The Kentucky Influence: How her upbringing and family history informed her unwavering work ethic and resilience. The Weight of Expectations: Understanding that expectations are often the source of pain and how to pivot toward contribution. Life on the Road: The unique dynamics of being married to a fellow touring musician and preparing to open for Garth Brooks at London's Hyde Park this summer. Leah Blevins is an artist defined not by perfection, but by an unshakable authenticity. Join us for a conversation about healing, faith, and the ongoing process of discovering who you truly are. You Are Beautiful with Lawrence Zarian

Over Zoom, Lawrence Zarian interviews Ellen Burstyn ahead of their in-person meeting on The Kelly Clarkson Show, reflecting on divine timing and how his pandemic-born podcast explores how entertainers see the world differently. Burstyn discusses promoting her poetry book and her discomfort with “commercializing” something sacred, emphasizing her goal of introducing poetry to people who don't know it; Zarian shares how the book gave him language for grief, citing Maya Angelou and Rumi, and Burstyn recites Edna St. Vincent Millay's “Love is not all.” Burstyn recalls a childhood split between being popular at school and hiding at home due to an abusive stepfather, and how poetry helped her envision a future. They discuss forgiveness, therapy, sobriety, and generational trauma, then touch on colleagues and projects including Cloris Leachman, Jack Nicholson, Alan Alda, Linda Blair, and roles like Lois in The Last Picture Show, ending with Burstyn completing “I, Ellen Burstyn, am beautiful because…” with a memory of her mother.Timestamp Menu:01:51 Universe and Timing03:04 Mirror Question03:54 Poetry Book Doubts09:01 Poetry Awakening09:53 Two Lives Growing Up15:42 Forgiving Mom17:40 Trauma and Sobriety24:47 Poems for Grief29:33 Favorite Poem Recital32:07 Poetry as Healing33:21 Central Park Cherry Blossoms35:32 Fashion and Self Love37:39 Rapid Fire Film Memories42:43 Internet Myths and Truth44:24 Alan Alda and Friendship48:07 Women and Equal Partnership52:13 Revisiting Past Characters54:03 Longing Poem and Farewell55:55 I Am Beautiful Because

Growth Now Movement with Justin Schenck
Meeting 10,000 Friends and the Lessons Learned with Rob Lawless

In this episode of The Growth Now Movement, I sit down with Rob Lawless, a guy who made a bold decision to walk away from a successful corporate career to pursue something most people wouldn't even consider. His goal? Meet 10,000 people, one-on-one, simply for the sake of human connection. Not for business. Not for networking. Not for followers. Just to connect. Rob shares what inspired this mission, which really comes down to something we all lose as we get older: curiosity, wonder, and the willingness to step into someone else's world without judgment. We talk about how, as adults, we often become more guarded, more distracted, and more disconnected. Rob's work is a direct challenge to that. It's about slowing down, being present, and having real conversations that go beyond surface-level small talk. This conversation dives deep into what actually builds meaningful relationships: curiosity, gratitude, consistency, and respect. Rob explains how those four things have allowed him to connect with people from completely different backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems, including faith. We also talk about the reality of social media and how it's distorting connection. While it gives us access to more people than ever before, it often removes depth and replaces it with quick hits of validation. Rob shares why intentional, one-on-one conversations matter more now than ever. He opens up about how COVID forced him to pivot his project from entirely in-person interactions to virtual conversations, which unexpectedly expanded his reach to over 90 countries. What started as a local mission turned into a global movement. We also get into some of the real challenges that come with this work, including awkward conversations, setting boundaries, and staying present with each person while maintaining the energy to keep going. Rob shares the story of how he ended up on The Kelly Clarkson Show and what that experience meant for his mission. We also talk about what happens when he reaches 10,000 people, and what's next. From keynote speaking to writing a book to potentially teaching human connection in universities, Rob is just getting started. This episode is a reminder that at the core of everything we're chasing is connection. And maybe the simplest thing we can do to change our lives is to sit down and truly listen to another human being. In This Episode You Will Learn • Why Rob left corporate life to pursue human connection • How curiosity can transform your relationships • Why adults lose their sense of wonder and how to get it back • The four pillars of meaningful connection: curiosity, gratitude, consistency, and respect • How social media is weakening real human interaction • Why intentional conversations matter more than ever • How COVID expanded Rob's mission globally • How to handle awkward conversations and build deeper relationships • The importance of empathy and perspective • What true connection looks like in today's world
