Autonomy is a huge factor. No one will tell you that you need to stick to it. Other people don’t impose consequences on you for skipping a workout day or having cake for breakfast. You lose autonomy when you enroll in a program that doesn’t excite you. Competence is also important. You need to have real results from what you’re doing. Short-term results motivate long-term commitment. Ted believes relatedness is the most important piece. Other people have been where you are. Connecting with them can help you get through your own obstacles. Listen as Ted joins host Lisa Davis to discuss his tips for finding motivation to stick to a plan. His personal goal was to run a 5K in under 30 minutes, so he invited his blog followers to join the challenge. Not every runner matches the stock image photo for “runner.” The Sub-30 Club runs the gamut, from very experienced marathon runners to beginners. No matter the skill level, members encourage each other to attain personal goals and work through personal obstacles. Decide on a goal for your running. Every individual has a personal goal. Buddy up with someone if you need the motivation to get moving. Most importantly, don’t push yourself too hard. The desire is to be as fast as possible when starting. This puts you at risk for injuries. Listen as Ted joins host Lisa Davis to discuss how running is for everyone, how to get started, and the importance of support. Add the spirit of play to your workout by taking it to the backyard. Many people consider themselves to be non-athletic because they didn’t play organized sports. Team sports participation isn’t required to find personal athleticism. Ted Spiker likes to have variety and a sense of fun in his workouts. To this end, he set up an obstacle course in his backyard for fitness. A backyard workout with objects provides plenty of variety. Nature has innate inclines and varied terrain. Trees are great for climbing. Some objects can be used for lifting, throwing, and balancing. Invite friends to join your backyard workout to increase the fun. Take turns suggesting activities that take advantage of your surroundings. Listen as Ted joins host Lisa Davis to discuss how he’s found success with backyard workouts. What's it like to participate in the Ironman challenge? The Ironman competition is quite a physical challenge. Competitors must complete a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run (full marathon). The challenges must be completed consecutively and must be finished within 17 hours. Ted Spiker committed to Ironman. He knew that one second past that 17-hour limit would result in a Did Not Finish (DNF) classification. While Ted wasn’t a strong athlete in his younger years, he worked hard to reach Ironman. Gradient competitions and training prepared him for the event. Welcome to the show Andy Aubin,Therese Schweyer,William Baez from The Sub 30 Club. The Sub 30 Club was originally started in April of 2012 when Ted Spiker, contributor to Runner’s World and the man behind The Big Guy Blog on runnersworld.com, set out on a quest to break 30 min in a 5K. This represented a “challenging but doable” goal for him at the time, being a middle- to back- of–the-pack runner. He put the word out through his blog to see if anybody else might want to join him in his efforts. He was expecting five or six people…a dozen at best. Within the first day he had over 100 responses. As of Today, there are over 5,700 members and the focus of the club has shifted from the specific goal of a 29:59 5K to the spirit that started the club, embracing runners of all levels chasing every goal imaginable. There are members who are brand new to running and those who are chasing goals in races of all distances. We have Boston qualifiers, ironman triathletes, and ultra-runners. The club truly welcomes all runners. You are not alone. It can be easy to think you're all alone, on a little island, whether you're struggling with nutrition, fitness, or specifically running. I'm here to tell you... you're not alone. There is a larger community you are a part of whether you realize it or not, and there are many smaller communities still that you can become a part of intentionally. Ted Spiker joins me on Episode 48 of the podcast to talk about exactly that. You DO belong, and you're doing great! Ted, through his interest in and passion for fitness and running, has created what has become quite the community. He's created a vehicle for people to identify with someone, or many someones, who are dealing with and fighting through the same struggles they are themselves. Maybe, with a little bit of a hand reaching out, we can all make it a little more do-able to achieve our goals and reach that next success... whether it's a sub-30 5k... or something else.
