What happens when privately-owned apartment buildings need upgrade? Multiple owners - all with their own ideas - can mean it's easier to sell and move, rather than refurbish. But two Sydney researchers want to change that - and give architects and homeowners the tools they need to co-design a new life for old apartment buildings. We sat down with UNSW's Dr Hazel Easthope and University of Sydney's Dr Sandra Loschke to unpack their vision for a more participatory and sustainable approach to apartment redevelopment - research which is being supported by the NSW ARB. Pathways To Register as an architect

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2018 25:26

The NSW Architects Registration Board is tasked by the Architects Act to do 4 things; protect the consumer, inform the public, promote architecture, and register architects. So how do you register an architect? If you’ve ever asked that question, this podcast is for you. In some countries around the world, graduating from a 5 year degree in architecture is enough to make you an architect. But in Australia, a graduate must have a period of practical experience following university, and must have successfully completed an examination prior to applying for registration. That’s because Australia defines the regulation of professional services as a consumer protection measure. There are now more pathways to register as an architect. This podcast outlines those pathways, and gives you an insiders view on what examiners look for in candidates. Hear from Melonie Bayl-Smith, the founder and director of Bijl Architecture, and the Convenor of pathways for the NSW Architects Registration Board - of which she is a Board member, and from Sydney architect and examiner, Ben Giles.

We present the second Salon on Standards hosted by the UTS School of Architecture in association with the NSW Architects Registration Board. This series invites experts in the field to discuss the standards and regulations that shape the profession of architecture in Australia. Documents like the Accreditation Procedure and Competency Standard are fundamental to architects and architecture. They provide the roadmap for how we accredit university programs, examine architects on their way to registration, right through their continuing professional development. In this episode we go back to school to discuss the professional Accreditation of architectural education, which is guided in Australia and New Zealand by the Architecture Program Accreditation Procedures. So what standards do they measure? Who’s sets it? And does that standard even matter? In this episode we are joined by Professor Sue Savage from the Queensland University of Technology, Kathlyn Loseby COO of Crone Architects, and Professor Gerard Reinmuth from the University of Technology Sydney.
